2010 FIBA World Championship

I have pages created for every player that is currently playing on a national team that qualified for the 2010 championship. The rosters are likely to change some obviously, but it's a pretty solid start. I've had trouble gathering information on Tunisian teams and Jordanian teams though, if anyone wants to help on those - see, for example, Zain Club in Jordan.

Also, turkey2010.fiba.com has preliminary rosters up of each national team's roster...should we do the same with the squads' section in the championship? I would tend to think so, but it's open for debate - not sure which template you all would prefer as well. Bds69 (talk) 06:56, 3 January 2010 (UTC)bds69

I'd suggest to wait until the final rosters are made public. –Howard the Duck 12:26, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:56, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism at Chris Cohan

Hi there. Just wanted to let you guys know there's a user, Atapio (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), who is consistently putting his personal opinion on the article about Chris Cohan. I'm already at two reverts regarding this material, so I wanted to ask any interested parties to keep an eye on this article and the user. NeoChaosX (talk, edits) 04:37, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

I've put it on my watchlist. I'm tempted to just stub the article, and start over from scratch. Even without Atapio's edits, it kind of sucks. It's very slanted, poorly organized. Zagalejo^^^ 04:55, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

George Webb Sweigert PROD

I've been cleaning up Oregon BLPs, and I haven't been able to find enough on this BBall player. Please save it if you can. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 05:07, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Hmmm. This one is probably a lost cause. I can't find any evidence that he played pro ball anywhere, and his college career isn't impressive enough for the article to survive on that alone. Zagalejo^^^ 05:17, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Notification regarding Wikipedia-Books

Hadronic Matter
An overview

An example of a book cover, taken from Book:Hadronic Matter

As detailed in last week's Signpost, WikiProject Wikipedia books is undertaking a cleanup all Wikipedia books. Particularly, the {{saved book}} template has been updated to allow editors to specify the default covers of the books. Title, subtitle, cover-image, and cover-color can all be specified, and an HTML preview of the cover will be generated and shown on the book's page (an example of such a cover is found on the right). Ideally, all books in Category:Book-Class Basketball articles should have covers.

If you need help with the {{saved book}} template, or have any questions about books in general, see Help:Books, Wikipedia:Books, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia-Books, or ask me on my talk page. Also feel free to join WikiProject Wikipedia-Books, as we need all the help we can get.

This message was delivered by User:EarwigBot, at 01:37, 2 April 2010 (UTC), on behalf of Headbomb. Headbomb probably isn't watching this page, so if you want him to reply here, just leave him a message on his talk page. EarwigBot (owner • talk) 01:37, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Strange statistics editing on NBA player articles

Someone may want to check Special:Contributions/72.73.120.225 and revert if necessary — that editor did a string of edits without edit summaries, changing a bunch of numbers on (presumably) already-established statistics from old seasons, among other things. --Closeapple (talk) 02:48, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

You could try WT:NBA for a faster response. –Howard the Duck 02:49, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Ugh, not this again. Someone with a dynamic IP was doing the same thing earlier this year. Yes, it's vandalism, and it's a huge pain, because most editors won't recognize the problem. Thanks for posting it here. Zagalejo^^^ 17:43, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Sports Notability

There is discussion ongoing at Wikipedia_talk:BIO#RFC:_WP:Athlete_Professional_Clause_Needs_Improvement debating possible changes to the WP:ATHLETE notability guideline. As a result, some have suggested using WP:NSPORT as an eventual replacement for WP:ATHLETE. Editing has begun at WP:NSPORT, please participate to help refine the notability guideline for the sports covered by this wikiproject. —Joshua Scott (LiberalFascist) 03:25, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Basketball/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 63 articles to be referenced. The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:35, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Xenobot Mk V to tag articles in project scope and/or auto-assess unassessed articles

A request has been made at User:Xenobot/R#WP:BBALL to tag & auto-assess articles in the scope of this project based on these categories and/or auto-assess the project's unassessed articles.

The category list is mainly based on Category:Basketball players by club, Category:Basketball players by competition and Category:Basketball players by nationality, with the NBA and College categories removed, as they are in separate projects. Of course some NBA players will be captured in this sweep due to Olympic, international or other previous clubs.

To auto-assess, Xenobot Mk V (talk · contribs) looks for a {{stub}} template on the article, or inherits the class rating from other project banners (see here for further details).

Feel free to raise any questions or concerns regarding this process. The task will commence after 72 hours if there are no objections.

The-Pope (talk) 14:46, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Of course some NBA players will be captured in this sweep due to Olympic, international or other previous clubs - Is this undesirable? I can build a list from the categories provided and then exclude any articles that are also in other categories - if desired. –xenotalk 13:26, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Err.. A lot of Mario characters are under the "Fictional Basketball players" category. Because of this, they were tagged for your Project. I think they might should be removed from that category and your project, because that is just in a side game, and is not their full profession. Do you agree? Blake (Talk·Edits) 02:59, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Probably. –xenotalk 03:29, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

  Task complete. 8112 edits (5000 +3112). –xenotalk 03:29, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Article could use help!

Hey guys, I've been active at the college football project and recently added Gene Johnson (basketball) because he was a head football coach for a few years--but it looks like there is some really rich basketball history with this guy--some credit him with inventing the full court press, and he was either head or assistant coach (depending on what sources you believe) of the 1936 Olympic gold medal team. He spent some time coaching basketball in college and in the AAU. This is an article that could use some real basketball help!--Paul McDonald (talk) 03:23, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Eurobasket

Serbia Issue

There is an interesting issue at Eurobasket. Serbia was the successor to FR Yugoslavia, which was the successor to the old Yugoslavia in 1991. Hence, they should be listed as having those medals, as they are in for example the waterpolo world cup. I just need more consensus in case more IPs start reverting that stuff. Same for Russia/USSR btw. (LAz17 (talk) 00:17, 7 August 2010 (UTC)).

The people who handle the Olympics articles list Serbia separately from Yugoslavia, and Russia separately from the USSR. See All-time Olympic Games medal table. Zagalejo^^^ 00:40, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Your link for Yugoslavia lists medals until 2000. So where do you want to make the break, at 1991, at 2000, 2003, or 2005? Naturally they should be listed together. As for republics that broke off... well, that's their fault. Montenegro can't claim anything from "Serbia and Montenegro" if it wins a medal at the next eurobasket - which is actually likely. (LAz17 (talk) 01:12, 7 August 2010 (UTC)).
I suggest that it be done as it is done here, [4] (LAz17 (talk) 01:17, 7 August 2010 (UTC)).
You might want to try WP:RFC. That would get more people involved. Has FIBA ever published its own ranking of all-time medal winners? Zagalejo^^^ 02:40, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Should have checked; see here. They list Russia and the Soviet Union separately. They also have an entry for Yugoslavia, and another for Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro). Zagalejo^^^ 02:43, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
This is also an issue on the FIBA World Championship page, where FIBA has 2 Yugoslavias in their medal tables. The distinction was:
  1.   Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia = one team
  2. The following Yugoslavia teams are all one team:
    1.   Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
    2.   Serbia and Montenegro
    3.   Serbia

Division B issue

We need a comprehensive fixing of Division B. First, the problem is that there is little information to be found on this. I can not find any data on its existence before 2005 competition. As for the 2003 eurobasket - it appears that the countries in division B were playing in 2003's regular eurobasket, but in division X. Now, was division X another name for Division B? I don't know. Some help please. Here's a link with the division X (or preliminary?) for 2003. [5] Please help. (LAz17 (talk) 01:15, 7 August 2010 (UTC)).

Request for photographs and images

To help address the many requests for photographs People-photo-bot has moved article talk pages from Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of people and Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of sportspeople to Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of basketball peopleif it contains the template {{WikiProject Basketball}}. Members of this project are invited to address the requests for images listed. Please note that some articles may now have an appropriate photograph and that the need-image flag has simply not been removed, this can also be checked using the Image Existence Checker link on the category page. If a page has been incorrectly moved please inform me on my talk page.--Traveler100 (talk) 16:03, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

{{bb start}} & {{bb end}}

Hi folks, the templates {{bb start}} & {{bb end}} which are used to nest and restrict the width of the footer navboxes in articles were originally derived from the equivalent templates {{fb start}} & {{fb end}} used in football articles. The folks over at the football project have bitten the bullet and converted over their templates to be full width and to not require the use of these templates. You can see the discussion on this here. They are in the process of removing the many usages of the templates at the moment. Some of your project articles use the football templates, these could be changed to use the basketball templates, but it would be good, for consistency, for your project to follow the lead of the football people and eliminate the use of these templates. The use of the these templates without all of the nested templates complying can be seen in the article New Zealand national basketball team. Any comments? Basketball articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Basketball articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Magnum Rolle peer review

Would you all mind reviewing Magnum Rolle at Wikipedia:Peer review/Magnum Rolle/archive1? I have worked hard on this article and want to bring it to featured status! ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 22:39, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Isn't it a little early to start thinking about FAC? No matter how good the article is in its current state, it won't satisfy the stability requirement. Rolle is just starting his pro career. The article will look very different five years from now, especially if you try to maintain the same level of detail for each stage of his career. Zagalejo^^^ 23:33, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
It's as stable as it can be, there were no edit wars, disputes, etc. Maybe I'll trim down the cbb section in 5 years, if the article gets too long. FWIW it's now at FAC, see Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Magnum Rolle/archive1. ~EDDY (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 18:37, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Quin Snyder

The article on Quin Snyder (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) has maintenance tags which, while accurate, cause concern to the subject's family. I'd be grateful if eople with an interest in NBA people could review this article, clean it up and source it better, to enable the removal of the maintenance tags. Thanks, Guy (Help!) 13:58, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Would they get upset if we temporarily stubbed the article? We can't whip it into GA quality overnight. Because of copyvio concerns, I've already reverted one section to the way it appeared in an older version. Zagalejo^^^ 04:46, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Reliable sources for Philippine Basketball players?

Over at the BLP Rescue Project we're running into a number of long-term unreferenced bios for Philippine basketball players. These are proving quite tricky to source. It would be helpful to know whether this Project considers either PBA-online and/or Eurobasket.com to be sufficiently reliable to count as a reliable source. If not, what would you recommend? Without sources, these bios are quite likely to end up being nominated for deletion. We'd be very grateful if someone here could spare the time to consider the question and post an answer here.--Plad2 (talk) 07:49, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
