Does the library have WiFi? If it does I can edit on my iPad. Cloveapple (talk) 19:30, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes there is WiFi, as somebody from Special Collections has informed me, and they encourage editors to bring tablets or laptops; there will also be six public computers. —innotata 22:48, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Wow, missed this. We won't be able to get out word about this on the wiki, as early as for past events; should this should be rescheduled? (I'll contact HCLschlubb, and post where other Minnesota Wikipedians will notice.) Otherwise, for my part I'm interested and can make this date or almost all weekends. —innotata 18:19, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

I haven't been in touch with them myself (I'm a New Yorker), but I do know they've been publicizing the date to their own community already: Minneapolis History Wikipedia edit-a-thon. Also, you might want to consider a partial focus on women's history in Minneapolis for this, as part of the WikiWomen's History Month campaign.--Pharos (talk) 18:53, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
I've now added this to the watchlist notification WP:Geonotice for editors in Minnesota.--Pharos (talk) 15:32, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Anyone else interested in participating? It's a pretty remarkable event, and if I were anywhere near Minnesota, I'd certainly be in :)--Pharos (talk) 21:03, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I saw the Tumblr post after noticing this. I see you e-mailed Jonathunder, who got the word out on events in the past. I don't think we can count on regional editors being aware of the event as for past events, particularly on any of the editors who would be especially interested, such as others who attended past events, being able to come on such short notice. —innotata 18:58, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
The people at the library will be looking into women's history topics for the event. —innotata 22:48, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Great to hear this! Please let me know also how I can help. As gender gap fellow I'm hoping that these events will not only help to improve women's history subjects on any Wikipedia, but, will also be a tool for women to participate in the events. I'd love to also work with you to promote Wikipedia:Teahouse to new users, so they can receive online support after the event. Please let me know how I can help! SarahStierch (talk) 16:34, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Lessons learned

Thanks to everyone for coming. Thanks to everybody who helped me with images (the library asked me to be there to hold hands with anyone who needed help but I got more help than I gave) and thanks for bringing those donuts. --HCLschlubb (talk) 20:35, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for organizing this, and thanks again to the library staff who were helpful in finding materials. I almost felt like a kid in a candy store with so much material and so little time to use it all. I found the newspaper clippings helpful, along with National Register nomination forms for historic properties in Minneapolis. I'll have to come back again sometime for more research. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 14:47, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
A huge thanks to the staff for the terriffic help (and for letting us skirt the rules a bit to bring donuts). I didn't know about the clippings files, but I can see how helpful they can be. If you ever need help with an image, lots of us have experience. Also, a thousand thanks from me to security guard John who let me back up to the fifth floor just after the building closed to get my camera! Jonathunder (talk) 15:10, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm glad you got it back. It was great to meet and get reacquainted with you all. Here's the Star Tribune article on the event - [1]. Gobōnobo + c 22:08, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Wiki-Minnesotans! I would like to invite you to again join the Great American Wiknic this June :) Also, please put any preliminary details at Wikipedia:Wiknic#2012 Wiknic.--Pharos (talk) 17:41, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Hey Wiki-Minnesotans, let's get something planned for the wiki-picnic!--Pharos (talk) 17:12, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
It's rather late now; I don't think I can help, since I assume we need park reservations—if we want to be sure of a table and a shelter, it costs $70 in St. Paul[2] and >$100 in Minneapolis[3] (last time we got a spot without a shelter at Wabun and it rained) and the suburbs I checked. Any suggestions, anyone able to organise? Should we set a date, say July 8, and post it? —innotata 20:09, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
I don't think you really need a reservation and a shelter; you can just set it for a Saturday, and move it to Sunday in case of rain contingency.--Pharos (talk) 01:13, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, that's fine with me, though last year it was pretty clear that's what the other editors expected. There are other reasons I'm not so sure about the idea, but anyway, since nobody else's stepped up: how about Minnehaha Park again (I can't think of a better spot), a spot near the Falls found and marked out on the day (so in regards to previous expectations, maybe a table and grill), 1–4, Jul 7, and Jul 8 as a rain date? I'll post the relevant info, and to the main Wiknic page, tomorrow. —innotata 02:14, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
One vote up for Minnehaha Park.--Creatorlarryli (talk) 05:03, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
OK, then, I've posted above and to the main Wiknic page. I assume this will work out well enough and we won't need to change plans; I'll post to users Monday, though. —innotata 00:41, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
If you're interested in geology or collecting fossils from the Ordovician Period, be sure to read the Minnehaha Falls article! Gandydancer (talk) 20:28, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Wha' happened? I had it on my calendar for July 8 (although I hadn't signed up because I had to wait to see if my schedule would be clear on that day). I was looking forward to meeting some folk before going to the Wikipedia conference in DC in July. Oh well..Is anyone from here going to the DC event, or been to one previously? It would be nice to talk to someone about it before I go. I'm brand new to all of this -- haven't started doing any editing yet, but have been a fan and user for a long time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dark roast, please (talkcontribs) 20:11, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

You posted to the 2011 event discussion, I've moved your comment to the 2012 section—it's still happening. —innotata 21:00, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Well, only three of us showed up—myself, SixWingedSeraph, and RandMC. We mostly discussed our experiences editing Wikipedia, and topics we work on. —innotata 21:29, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Well, somehow I put the picnic on my calendar for 12-3, not 1-4, which explains why I couldn't see anyone looking like Wikipedians, nor a Wiknic sign, even though I searched the area. I left around 12:40. See you another time. Dark roast, please (talk) 23:05, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Sorry about that. It was 12–3, as it says above. I was at a table by Sea Salt from 12:05 with a Wikipedia sign, and RandMC (in a Wikipedia shirt) and Charles found me at about 12:40. —innotata 00:28, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Future Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) activities!

We'd like to invite further local participation in the Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) committee, our monthly IRC meetings, and the associated wikimediaus-l mailing list, to help advance real-life Wikimedian activities in the US, including Wiki Loves Monuments photography in September and Wikipedia Loves Libraries meetups in October/November.--Pharos (talk) 17:12, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Takes Twin Cities photo event in September

I'd like to encourage you good Wiki-Minnesotans to start a Minneapolis / St Paul page with Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes America#Event page wizard. Or you can do the same at the regular Minnesota meetup page if you like.--Pharos (talk) 01:29, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Wiki loves libraries 2012

As part of the national Wiki Loves Libraries initiative, there will be an event at Special Collections at Minneapolis Central Library. The event will include an editathon, to increase the depth of information on Minneapolis history topics by utilizing materials in the Minneapolis Collection. Wikipedians and other members of the public are welcome to come in and create Wikipedia entries on subjects/people which we have archival/manuscript collections on or to work on Minneapolis history topics/people they are personally interested in. There will be a short instruction session in the beginning of the day and a tour of Special Collections in the morning and afternoon.

There is free wifi (so participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops/devices) as well as several public computers.

Any ideas for or interest in organising a Wiki Loves Libraries event? (I've emailed the folks at Minneapolis Central who organised the editathon earlier this year, and dropped a note to Mcghiever.) —innotata 22:13, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

The people at Minneapolis Central's Special Collections are definitely interested, and already had in mind another editathon on Minneapolis history. —innotata 01:08, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
And I'm keen on helping out too. -McGhiever (talk) 03:08, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
From HCL Special Collections guy email:
We were planning to do a Wikipedia edit-a-thon this fall. Are there other people we should alert?
Do you have a preference between November and October?
This time we thought we would pull personal and organizational collections that deem a Wikipedia entry but don’t have one yet. Participants can choose a collection and start working on an entry for the subject or if they have a specific facet of Minneapolis history they are interested in, they can choose that as well. -HCLschlubb (talk) 17:00, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Edit-a-thon will be Saturday November 3rd, 10 am to 4:30 pm. Details to follow --HCLschlubb (talk) 21:53, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it must be fine to set a date, I'd think. You were talking about other possible events, including a tour. The Wiki Loves Libraries page and talk page have some ideas. How about working in a planned intro to editing Wikipedia of some sort? (It didn't take long to explain the resources at the last event; some users should be able to do this.) The national event is about engagement with libraries and readers, we could spread word wider (tell people at other libraries?, any other ideas?), and use it to tell people about Wikipedia, and discuss researching articles and such aspects of working on Wikipedia. The section of the WLL page suggests pretty involved activities, we could go for modest versions; these discussions have happened anyway at most meetups with a very few people, but we could add a structured event or two for this occasion. —innotata 03:13, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
McGhiever's said he can do the intro, which is on the listing (below) now. —innotata 17:48, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Here's the listing on the library events page[4] in case it's of any interest. —innotata 17:48, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

We should get more non-Wikipedians than last time, thanks to publicity by the people at Special Collections, including coverage of this and February's events were in this Star Tribune article. I also have told some people who may be interested. —innotata 15:53, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Review of event

We had a good turnout, I suppose, of people new to Wikipedia, and just jumped into editing without much else (besides chatting). We worked on articles from a list based off that last time (HCLschlubb plans on posting it), and created Young-Quinlan Building, Clara Ueland, Forum Cafeteria (Minneapolis), Band Box Diner, and Northwestern National Life Building, among others. Someone from MNopedia suggested we have events at the History Center this winter—perhaps a Wikipedia Day meetup and an editathon later. —innotata 23:13, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Where do I go to get rid of this notice?

I've hidden it several times. I thought I had my preferences set up to not show these in the first place. Is there a box to check or a bit of code to cut/paste so I don't have to be invited to something that I have absolutely no interest in several times a day? --OnoremDil 19:40, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

OK...so it's today. Hopefully that means the header will be gone for everyone by tomorrow. I'd still like an answer to avoid the annoyance next year. --OnoremDil 19:43, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Onorem. I haven't tried this out, but according to Wikipedia:Geonotice you can permanently hide notices by adding ".geonotice { display: none; }" to your CSS file. Cheers, Gobōnobō + c 05:34, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Spring Editathon at MHS

Just to let people know, at the the recent events editors and Mhsrc and others from the Minnesota Historical Society been discussing having an editathon at the Minnesota History Center library, during the next month (possibly March 16). It might be good to start discussing an agenda; the editathon part won't be so easy to organise as the Special Collections events, since the library isn't based on topic files. Mcghiever and I are both interested in running a suggested more formal introduction to Wikipedia. —innotata 19:07, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

We at MNopedia and the Minnesota Historical Society are still very excited about having an editathon in 2013. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like March won't work after all. March is a busy time of year behind the scenes, and an editathon requires a lot of coordination with different departments. Fall 2013 is looking better. We hope you'll still be interested and available then. Mhsrc (talk) 22:17, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

June and July Meet-Ups

I will not be able to attend the either of these events, as I have a a coffee shop that I have to tend to during this time. However, if the group wishes to meet-up at my shop on these dates, I would be open for that. I also have free wifi. The name of the coffee shop is the Lavvu Coffee House, 813 4th Street Southeast, Minneapolis - 612-331-4136

Dinkytown talk 14:56, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

The events should be on the library calendar, so we can't relocate them (also, they have public computers and the collections). However, looks like a nice place and I'll keep it in mind for other events if you're interested, thanks for letting us know. —innotata 20:58, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

More frequent events?

I've been thinking for a while of having more frequent meetup events, perhaps monthly. With more small events, more Wikipedians can come to some of them. I'd like to have more in-person editing events, given how enjoyable an productive the editathons at Minneapolis Central Library were like. We'll also be able to point people interested in Wikipedia to something regular they can go to.

The main problem is finding a time and convenient place to meet. If we want to have public computers available and a good space, I think that limits us to a few library locations. The people at Special Collections at Minneapolis Central who organised the past events are interested, but they are only open weekdays and first and third Saturdays. I'm not certain I can make any of these days in April or May myself. Any ideas for other locations for these events, and anyone else interested in organising them?

Generally, any thoughts or ideas? —innotata 22:52, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

I like this idea. I don't know whether there would be much interest in this from non-Wikipedians or regular editors, but I think it would be worthwhile even if participation was low. I could make time to be at a library once a month. Gobōnobō + c 22:08, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
Why don't you set a time, among April 6, May 4, and May 18, and the let the librarians know? April 20 doesn't work for them; I may come on the May dates and I can put out messages on Wikipedia. —innotata 04:03, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes, this is a good idea, just like participating in the Wiknic. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 02:51, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Let's try this out. I suggest 1 June and 6 July, at Minneapolis Central. The Special Collections librarians expect any Saturdays they are open this summer will work, May and 3 August won't work for me. Once we pick exact dates and times (they're open 10-4:30, how about 12:30 to 2:30 + however long we want to stick around?) they can be put on the library calendar. —innotata 05:11, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

That sounds feasible. I'll keep an eye on the schedule of my children's activities and try to get this on my calendar. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 02:29, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
  • I've been active on WP for a while but have never attended one of these editing events. I will try to make at least one this summer if specific times can get locked down. :) Ruby 2010/2013 02:27, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
I can make it mebbe a few times in the summer... college is too far away for the school year.... -- Aunva6talk - contribs 03:18, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

I've said we'll do the dates June 1 and July 6, 12:30-2:30 (and those interested can come early and/or stick around, Special Collections closes at 4:30 and the library at 5:00 or something). If anyone wants to look at materials in the library, or subjects in the Minneapolis Collection, it's easier if you let the librarians know in advance. I'll add proper listings of the event later. —innotata 00:30, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

I'd love to come, and I believe I'll be able to. I'm rather new to WP myself and would love to meet more experienced editors. Megakacktus (talk) 17:49, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
I should be able to attend today (6 July 2013). See you there. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 12:44, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Anybody interested in having another event for the 2013 Great American Wiknic? Most of the events are on June 22, and that works for me. Minnehaha Falls should work (though we should figure out a better place), but any more ideas for locations etc? —innotata 19:12, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

If I can fit it into a work schedule, I'd be interested in finally getting out to MN for a meetup. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 19:44, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

since I finally have a DL, and Metro Trasit should reach out there, i'll see what I can do to show up! minnehaha is a great location for any picnic, been there before, good access, great scenery, etc..... -- Aunva6talk - contribs 03:16, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
Yes! Innotata, this date will work and the Blue Line goes right there. -SusanLesch (talk) 14:12, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
OK, we'd better do it at Minnehaha again. I just hope we can find each other this time, bring a bigger sign I guess. (The only reservable spots are at Wabun, and are not worthwhile, so we can't fix a spot.)
Should we talk about bringing food to share? —innotata 15:18, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
You have more experience with this venue but I can bring food or whatever. Will check back later in June. -SusanLesch (talk) 14:30, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
How many people to plan for? Can we drink beer or wine in a public park? -SusanLesch (talk) 17:58, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
This sounds like fun. --Mattwj2002 (talk) 08:03, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
I guess I'd check how many people have signed up a few days before, then add a few for the maybes and people who don't sign up. I can bring some food too, do you want to post your plans? You're not supposed to bring alcohol into Minneapolis parks. —innotata 13:33, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Actually you can. I can bring enough 3.2 cans for everybody. Still working out food but it will be take out, from The Wedge or Surdyk's. What are you bringing? -SusanLesch (talk) 14:30, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
What are the plans for the event? I just got the new wikimedia-commons app! I would love to contribute to the Commons somehow during the event. This will be my first wikimedia meetup of any kind. :) --Mattwj2002 (talk) 01:28, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
Also, is there any dish I could bring? How do you want to work food? --Mattwj2002 (talk) 01:30, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
This sounds like a ton of fun! I might have to come! -Mark — Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.135.112.14 (talk) 13:00, 18 June 2013
I'd say if you plan to be hungry, plan to bring something to eat. Unless somebody tells me not to, I am planning to bring two 6-packs of 3.2 beer, one 6-pack of Diet Coke, a quart of chicken or pasta salad, and some paper plates and forks. -SusanLesch (talk) 20:58, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks SusanLesch, I'll bring some food. I really want to get a video of the waterfall on Saturday if I can! :) My phone records in 720p! :D --Mattwj2002 (talk) 03:29, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
Great plan! And the falls should be full of rain by then. Innotata, can you possibly give us precise directions on where to meet? -SusanLesch (talk) 12:19, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
No, we can't be sure, I'll find a spot just before noon, to the north of the creek. I'm not sure I'll have time to grab food to share, but I'd like to bring something. —innotata 04:14, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
I was just thinking about some deli sliced meat, cheese, and some bread. Some chips might be nice too! --Mattwj2002 (talk) 07:33, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, guys. I'll find you north of the creek slightly after noon. The falls will really be running! -SusanLesch (talk) 15:07, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
I'll be wearing a blue polo shirt and cargo pants! See you then! :) --Mattwj2002 (talk) 13:45, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

There's a huge power outage here (hence I am editing from my phonne and can't put this below), but apparently at least one of you csn still come. I will be there unless there is a hugr storm, but probably only with a letter size sign and without enough food to share. —innotata 15:12, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

How long will the Wiknic be going on? Is it really from 12:00 to 4:00 or will it be ending early? Since it seems there will only be a few people I figured you guys might cut it short... Megakacktus (talk) 16:51, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

July Meetup

When: Saturday, July 6, 12:30pm-2:30pm+ Where: Minneapolis Central Library
Special Collections, on the 4th floor

As the first of what are intended to be monthly meetups, there will be two events at Hennepin County Library Special Collections this summer. Free wifi and several public computers are available, and the Special Collections contains many valuable historical resources, including the Minneapolis Collection, consisting of files on hundreds of topics related to Minneapolis from neighborhoods to politicians. It's best to call in advance to request materials. —innotata 19:29, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Sorry I missed this post. I won't be able to arrange an October meetup, and I'm unlikely to attend. If you want to have one, you should set the time and place now, if you can't use AWB to send messages to the invite list, ask me on my talk page; I probably can set up a November meetup. —innotata 20:05, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
No problem. Everyone is busy. I will discuss this at home, and see if we can just arrange a meet-up at a park or other public place out this way. Wikimedia Minnesota User Group

I'd like to encourage folks to look at the possibility of an informal Wikimedia User Group for Minnesota editors, which should make it easier to get Wikimedia Foundation grant funding for outreach events, and could even lead to an eventual nonprofit chapter like Wikimedia DC. The Wikimedia US Coalition would be more than glad to help you along this process!--Pharos (talk) 14:00, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Pharos. I think we'll be ready to consider a user group once we have a critical mass of editors. It is good to know that there is a support structure available when we arrive. Gobōnobō + c 01:02, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Discussion

We haven't got around to doing anything this fall, but we should have an event around Wikipedia Day, January 15. The Saturday after, January 18, should work best for me and anyone else on break. Any suggestions for locations? The last one was at Brit's Pub, and we should probably have it at somewhere like a cafe, rather than the Central Library, but we do have that to fall back to on the 18th. —innotata 19:09, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Great American Wiknic 2014 - Minnesota

I'd like to invite you to add a Minnesota event for the Great American Wiknic. This year we're aiming to coalesce nationally around July 6, but any date that is convenient to your local community works as well. And don't be shy about putting something preliminary on the national Wiknic page, it all helps!--Pharos (talk) 19:57, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

It's always fun to see the other Minnesota Wikipedians, so this sounds like a great idea. We might even have a dry day outdoors by then. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 21:30, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
July 6 works well for me, I'm out of town until shortly before then. Anyone have suggestions for locations other than Minnehaha Park? —innotata 22:44, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
I would suggest locations out my way if the public transportation here were only better. I'm open to any location that's reachable for a lot of us. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 03:10, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
How about Como? The park, zoo, and conservatory are all free (they request a small donation), it's reachable by public transit, there are picnic areas, and places to go if it rains. Jonathunder (talk) 04:04, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
Como sounds like a great idea, and a reasonable change of scene from the last few Minnesota meet-up locations. I'll try to remember to wear a Wikipedia tenth anniversary T-shirt for easy identification. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 20:57, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
Did anyone else notice that the main page's example event listing is for the fictional Frostbite Falls, Minnesota? Como would be a great place to meet. Does Sunday July 6th sound good? gobonobo + c 20:33, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Frostbite Falls is fictional? Maybe the timeshare there wasn't such a great investment. I may be in St. Paul on that Sunday, though. Jonathunder (talk) 14:22, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
I just put up a link on the national Wiknic page to this talk page section, saying "under discussion". It would be great if you could update the front side of this page with any preliminary details to date and location (which you seem to be coalescing on).--Pharos (talk) 19:16, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
I just responded to Pharos's prompt on my talk page by locking in the discussed details of this event, in these terms. "The Great American Wiknic 2014 - Minnesota will happen at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota on Sunday 6 July 2014 from noon CDT to 4:00pm CDT. Meet by the entrance of the Conservatory and scout for rain-free locations. (Park pavilions have to be reserved in advanced, but we may get lucky and have good weather that day for using the open part of the park grounds.)" This is a wiki, see feel free to edit the main page announcement as you deem fit. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 15:26, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
Sounds good! I should send out invitations to the invite list using AWB; however, I might not have access to a Windows machine until I return to the cities on June 26. So, it'd be good if someone else could do so. Oh, and, I have a blue Wikipedia t-shirt too, now. —innotata 20:24, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
does anyone even know if como park is (relatively) dry? after all, we have gotten 12 inches (300 mm) of rain already this month. in anty case, i suppose i could do it, assuming there's a category containing the minnesota members that should be notified. and assuming that I can install the AWB client (shouldn't be a problem) and remember how to use it. -- Aunva6talk - contribs 22:20, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Edit-a-thon in late November?

Hi, Minnesota Wikipedians! I've just moved back to Little Canada from California, and I'm wondering if there'd be any interest in holding an edit-a-thon at either the Roseville or Maplewood public library - I'm closer to Maplewood, but I'd be happy to take the extra few minutes to Roseville if that's more convenient for people. We could also chit-chat about starting a mailing list or some other form of off-wiki organization, and I'd be available (as ever) for technical questions (wearing my WMF engineer hat). Let me know if you're interested by signing below! --MarkTraceur (talk) 21:04, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm definitely interested, however, I use public transit (like a lot of past meetup attendees), so Maplewood is much too far, and Roseville would work, but could involve walking a long way. (FYI, there's an invite list for Minnesota we can send out invites to.) —innotata 17:56, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
Mark, is a northern suberb a strong preference? I'd be interested in coming up from the southern part of the state, so I'd be driving some distance anyway, but a more central location is better for those who use transit. Jonathunder (talk) 19:47, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
Alternatively, I might propose St Paul's Sun Ray library, which is a straight shot down from Maplewood, easily accessed from highways coming up from the south, and across the street from a major bus terminal. And just reopened after a massive renovation. -McGhiever (talk)
I'm +1 to Sun Ray. Given the interest, I'll call them today and see if I can't reserve a room for us. --MarkTraceur (talk) 13:16, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
Mark, were you able to reserve a room? If so, what date? Jonathunder (talk) 20:29, 11 November 2014 (UTC)
@Jonathunder: Yes, I am submitting the application now, but it's open, so we should be good. The date will be November 29th, 10:00-17:00 or so. --MarkTraceur (talk) 16:53, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

I'd like to invite folks to add preliminary info for Minnesota's event this year at Wikipedia:Wiknic.--Pharos (talk) 18:39, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

@Gobonobo: @RachelWex: @Innotata: @Jonathunder: Someone on the Minnesota mailing list has suggested Powderhorn Park, Minneapolis, what do folks think? It would be great to have a prelim listing at Wikipedia:Wiknic#Midwest asap.--Pharos (talk) 11:37, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

I think it's a great idea--could someone in Minneapolis check out the space and see if we have to reserve anything in advance or pay a reservation fee? Sundays would be best for me this month. RachelWex 02:28, 8 July 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by RachelWex (talkcontribs)

Offer of scholarship for your group's representative to attend WikiConference

I am writing to invite participants in your user group to WikiConference North America to be held in San Diego Friday to Monday 7-10 October. Here are further details:

  • We are accepting submissions until 31 August.
  • We are accepting scholarship applications 9 August - 23 August. About 40 scholarships are available only for people in Canada, the US, and Mexico. Last year about 200 people applied for scholarships.
  • More volunteers are needed. In the usual wiki-way, anyone may comment on program submissions. At the conference in person, all conference organizers will be volunteers. All conference attendees are encouraged check in with conference organizers about volunteering for the task queue even for an hour. Anyone interested may contact Flonight and Rosiestep to offer volunteer support.
  • Major sponsorship for the conference comes from the San Diego Public Library who are providing the venue and a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.
  • This is the third year of this conference, with WikiConference USA being in New York in 2014 and in Washington DC in 2015. Check the schedules of those for examples of what kinds of programming will be offered this year.

Discussion about the conference on-wiki could happen at meta:WikiConference North America.

This year, conference organizers have been able to reserve one scholarship to attend for someone in your organization. I encourage participants in your organization to start a conversation among yourselves about who is available and interested to attend the conference as a representative of your collective interests. If you can identify someone among yourselves to accept this travel scholarship, then please tell me of your choice. The person who wishes to receive a scholarship in this scheme should still complete the scholarship application as soon as possible and before 23 August. After the form is completed and you notify me, then I will note your group's decision for that person. Thanks for your consideration. Write me with any questions.--Pharos (talk) 20:53, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

May 2018

Pharos and I have discussed by email a meetup when we will be in Minneapolis, Sunday, May 20, afternoon/evening. Art-A-Whirl, an open studio tour in Northeast Minneapolis, is also that weekend. Who would be interested? Recommendations for a coffee house or restaurant in Northeast? I really like Anchor Fish and Chips, but there are many others. Jonathunder (talk) 16:50, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

Count me in. I have no particular opinion on meeting place, though. -McGhiever (talk) 17:00, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Sunday evening works for me but something closer to southwest Minneapolis/Edina would be a better location for Janice Lurie. I love Anchor Fish and Chips but Northeast will be packed because of ArtAWhirl. Barnes and Nobles in Edina is open until 9 PM and has a good restaurant/coffee bar with wifi. Open to whatever works. Sjacobsen1 (talk) 20:01, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
What will meeting be about? How long? 4 to 6 PM? Should we check to see if we could meet in Mia's library? Sjacobsen1 (talk) 20:13, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
According to the Minneapolis Institute of Art website, their library is not open on Sundays and the museum closes at 5 p.m. Perhaps someone has connections to MIA or MCAD and can ask about special arrangements. Jonathunder (talk) 14:49, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Two of the people here actually work for with MIA. We should be able to get a response on the library's availability by tomorrow.--Pharos (talk) 13:08, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
4 to 6 would work for me too JLLurie (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 20:29, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

We've started a meetup page here, please RSVP and add to the agenda: Wikipedia:Meetup/Minnesota/May 2018 Minnesota User Group Meeting.--Pharos (talk) 14:31, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Look forward to seeing everyone today at the museum! Glad to join from New York.--Pharos (talk) 16:38, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

Reverse chronology?

Maybe this page would be more intuitive if the 2018 events were at the top, rather than all the way at the bottom? It's always a bit confusing to have to scroll through 12 years of history (which is impressive, though!) to get to the latest event.--Pharos (talk) 17:22, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

I've attempted a 2018-first chronology, after a few people agreed with it at the recent meetup. Feel free to readjust as the local community sees fit.--Pharos (talk) 20:57, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day 2019

Hi Folx--we now have an official MeetUp page for the Wikipedia Day event: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Minneapolis/WikipediaDay We also have an FB event that I created: https://www.facebook.com/events/273119190037503/?notif_t=plan_user_associated&notif_id=1546031221736221 Let's move all of our conversation about the event, RSVPs, etc to the official MeetUp page--thanks!

Some of us in the Wikimedia Minnesota User Group (WikiMUG) have discussed having an informal gathering in a public place on Saturday, January 19 in celebration of Wikipedia Day. To get the discussion started, I propose it be in St. Paul or Minneapolis on the light rail line starting at 7 p.m. Looking for suggestions as to a place we could have a birthday cake. Please reply if interested. Jonathunder (talk) 22:05, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm available that night, and fairly flexible on location. = paul2520 (talk) 01:13, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

The location and time are still being discussed through the Wikimedia Minnesota User Group (WikiMUG) mailing list, but the Common Roots Cafe at 2558 Lyndale Avenue South in Minneapolis has been proposed. The meeting room there seats 20. Please indicate potential interest so we know if that's enough space. Jonathunder (talk) 00:25, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Please advise what time. Rachel asked for 6PM. I plan to bring cake. Thank you. -SusanLesch (talk) 22:03, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
The room reservation starts at 6 and the venue has approved us bringing birthday cake. Many thanks. Jonathunder (talk) 22:35, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Definitely going

  • I will most likely be there if there is no snowstorm. I vote for starting the event at 6 pm though—not everyone can attend late. RachelWex (talk) 01:57, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Plan to be there. Thanks. 6PM is fine. Should I bring a cake? -SusanLesch (talk) 15:07, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
Cake—or death. (Eddie Izzard joke.)
Cake, please.

Colored Frames

With concise interview segments and impressionistic video collages, Colored Frames is a documentary showcasing the works of Black artists, from the Civil Rights era to today, as well as their struggle for visibility and acceptance in the mainstream art world. The film explores the conversation of art and the Black experience and seeks to eliminate years of negative stereotyping and assumptions that come with images of Blackness in America. As legendary artist Benny Andrews puts it, Black artists seek to be included on the basis of quality, or excluded “on the basis that its not acceptable,” Andrews implores, “not because it’s Black.” Directed by Lerone D. Wilson, 2007. Runtime 56 minutes. English, Closed11:30 a.m.

!Women Art Revolution

An entertaining and revelatory “secret history” of Feminist Art, !Women Art Revolution deftly illuminates this under-explored movement through more than forty years of compiled conversations, observations, archival footage and works of visionary artists, historians, curators, and critics. Starting from its roots in 1960s antiwar and civil rights protests, the film details major developments in women’s art through the 1970s and explores how the tenacity and courage of these pioneering artists resulted in what is now widely regarded as the most significant art movement of the late 20th century. With a rousing score by Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein, !W.A.R. features artists like The Guerilla Girls, Yvonne Rainer, Judy Chicago, Marina Abramovic, Yoko Ono, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, and countless other groundbreaking figures in an intimate portrayal of their fight to break down barriers facing women both in the art world and society at large. Directed by Lynn Hershman Leeson, 2010. Runtime 83 minutes. English.
