This page is way too long and contains too much peripheral information such as Ohm's law. Should be one paragrpah. Let me take a crack at it:

Solar sytems use inverters to convert DC to AC voltages. Some systems use battery backup and in these applications the inverter only needs a low voltage input, such as 12, 24 or 48 Volts. However, other systems send higher voltages to the inverter, such as when the solar panels drive the inverter directly and multiple panels are arranged in series. The term "string inverter" generally refers to inverters with higher input voltages (specify values). The term originated from panels being placed in series strings. String inverters can be either grid-tied or not.
