Grid of old warnings from WP:UTM edit

Note that these templates are currently being organized and cleaned up at Wikipedia:WikiProject user warnings.

See Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace for an expanded page. These templates should always be used with the subst: keyword, as suggested on Wikipedia:Template substitution. For example, type , not test. They are shown without subst: here to reduce the space occupied by this large table.

Uw-sofixit Not around

To coordinate numbers, the previous blanking 2, 3 and 4 templates have been moved because they were out of sync with the numbering usage with other templates. The old templates, though not listed, can still be used as they redirect to the new name and number.

The numbering system being used across the templates is simple:

0. Good faith edit
1. General note
2. Could be seen as vandalism
3. Warning to stop
4. Final warning
5. Blocked
6. Blocked plus severe warning

If you are creating new templates, please follow the numbers above, even if you are not creating templates using all the numbers. That way, by using the right number, users will be able to know automatically what category of message the template refers to.

Detail of warnings edit

What to type What it makes
You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period. Additionally, users who perform several reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. When in dispute with another editor you should first try to discuss controversial changes to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. Should that prove unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection. If the edit warring continues, you may be blocked from editing without further notice.

You have been blocked from editing for a short time for your disruption caused by edit warring and violation of the three-revert rule. During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection. If you would like to be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text below this notice, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.
== Welcome! ==

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

Someone using this IP address, at , has made edits that do not conform to our policies and guidelines and therefore have been reverted. For more information on this, see Wikipedia's policies on vandalism and limits on acceptable additions. If you did not do this, you may wish to consider getting a username to avoid confusion with other editors. If you'd like to experiment with the syntax, please do so in the sandbox rather than in articles.

You don't have to log in to read or edit pages on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free, requires no personal information, and has many benefits. Without a username, your IP address is used to identify you.

Some good links for newcomers are:

Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and a timestamp. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask the Help Desk, or place helpme on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

Again, welcome! ~~~~

Please do not create attack pages. Attack pages and files are not tolerated by Wikipedia and are speedily deleted. Users who continue to create or repost such pages and images, especially those in violation of our biographies of living persons policy, will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Thank you.
Information icon Before adding a category to an article, please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified according to Wikipedia's categorization guidelines. The category being added must already exist, and must be supported by the article's verifiable content. Categories may be removed if they are deemed incorrect for the subject matter. Thank you.
Information icon Hello, I'm ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ. I noticed that you recently removed all content from a page. Please do not do this. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. As a rule, if you discover a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If a page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you wish to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks.
Information icon Please do not replace Wikipedia pages with blank content. Your content removal does not appear to be constructive and has been reverted. If you think that the page should be deleted, please read Wikipedia:How to delete a page. If you only meant to make a test edit, please use the sandbox for that. Thank you.
Warning icon Please stop. If you continue to blank out or remove portions of page content, templates, or other materials from Wikipedia without adequate explanation, you may be blocked from editing.
Stop icon You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you remove or blank page content or templates from Wikipedia without giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary.

You have been blocked temporarily from editing for continued removal of material. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you would like to be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text below this notice, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.
This is the only warning you will receive regarding your disruptive edits.

If you vandalize Wikipedia again, you may be blocked from editing without further notice.

You have been temporarily blocked from editing for repeatedly violating Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. If you wish to make neutral and unbiased contributions, feel free to do so after the block expires.
Please don't change the format of dates without good reason. Most British people and many people internationally write dates in day-month-year order, e.g., 12 December 1904. Most Americans use month-day-year order, e.g., December 12, 1904. If the article is about an American topic, use month-day-year. If it is a British or European topic, use day-month-year. If neither, leave it as originally written. Many Americans or British people take offence if an article about their country, written in their local version of English, is changed around to a version they don't use. So please do not do that.

If you have any questions about this, ask me on my talk page, or place helpme on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Enjoy your time on Wikipedia. Thank you.

==Speedy deletion nomination of :{}==

A tag has been placed on :{}, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you.

Please don't change the format of dates without good reason. Most British people and many people internationally write dates in day-month-year order, e.g., 12 December 1904. Please stop. If you continue to use disruptive, inappropriate or hard-to-read formatting, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. There is a Manual of Style that should be followed.
Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. Thank you.
Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion pages. Doing so won't stop the discussion from taking place. You are, however, welcome to comment about the proposed deletion on the appropriate page. Thank you.
Please stop. If you continue removing Articles for deletion notices or comments from articles and Articles for deletion pages, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia.
This is the final warning you will receive regarding your disruptive edits.
The next time you remove Articles for deletion notices or comments from articles and Articles for deletion pages, you may be blocked from editing without further notice.

You have been temporarily blocked for repeatedly removing Articles for deletion notices and comments from pages in violation of the three-revert rule despite being asked not to do so. If you wish to cooperate with the community, you are welcome to do so after the block expires.
Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed maintenance templates from Wikipedia. When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as your removal of this template has been reverted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Article requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Information icon Hello, I'm ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ. An image you uploaded appears to be copyrighted content borrowed from another website. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously: if you are the copyright holder and would like to use this image on Wikipedia, please follow the instructions given at WP:DONATEIMAGE. This will start the process to get an VRTS ticket in place on the item proving that Wikipedia has permission to use it. The image should be uploaded to Commons, not directly to Wikipedia. If you haven't created an account here, you will need to create one on Commons. This may sound complex, but hopefully if you take it step by step it will go smoothly. If you have any questions, you can leave a message on my talk page. Thanks!
Information icon Hello, I'm ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you.
Information icon Please do not add or change content without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Article requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

The article Article has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done because the article was about a real person or group of people, individual animal, organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content or an organized event, but did not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. If you can indicate why the subject is actually significant enough for an encyclopedia article, you are free to re-create it, but this time you need to demonstrate that, which is best done by citing to reliable, secondary sources that are entirely unconnected to the topic.

Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and for specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for musicians, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

Information icon Thank you for contributing to the article Article. However, please do not use unreliable sources such as blogs, wikis, personal websites, and websites and publications with a poor reputation for checking the facts or with no editorial oversight. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions to the Article article, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text—which means allowing other people to modify it—then you must include on the external site this statement (or something similar): "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later, and under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License".

Hello. Concerning your contribution, Article, please note that Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text or images obtained from other web sites or printed material, without the permission of the author(s). This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://google.com. As a copyright violation, Article appears to qualify for deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. If you believe that the article or image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License (CC-BY-SA) then you should do one of the following:

 • If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Article and send an email with the message to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
 • If a note on the original website states that it is licensed under the CC-BY-SA license, leave a note at Talk:Article with a link to where we can find that note.
 • If you hold the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the CC-BY-SA and GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Article.

==Speedy deletion nomination of Article==

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Article requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Welcome to Wikipedia. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:
 1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
 2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
 3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions.

Currently, you are editing without a username. You can continue to do so, as you are not required to log in to Wikipedia to read and edit articles; however, logging in will result in a username being shown instead of your IP address (yours is Template messages/User talk namespace). Logging in does not require any personal details, and there are many other benefits for logging in.

When you edit pages:

 • Please respect others' copyrights; do not copy and paste the contents from webpages directly.
 • Please use a neutral point of view when editing articles; this is possibly the most important Wikipedia policy.
 • If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
 • Do not add unreasonable contents into any articles, such as copyrighted text, advertisement messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Adding such content or editing articles maliciously is considered vandalism.

The Wikipedia Tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. For now, if you are stuck, you can click the edit this page tab above, type helpme in the edit box, and then click Save Page; an experienced Wikipedian will be around shortly to answer any questions you may have. Also feel free to ask a question on my Talk page. I will answer your questions as far as I can! Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia.

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Example is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Example until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.

== Proposed deletion of Example ==

The article Example has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Notification that an autobiography which would otherwise qualify for speedy deletion has instead been userfied

Example
Thank you for your effort at contributing to Wikipedia, especially if you are a newcomer. The Wikipedia community owes its newcomers a lot, and continues to value this as per policy and per practice.

That said, the article you created at Example seems to be erroneously placed, as it seems to consist of information you give about yourself. I have therefore moved it for you to your user space, which is the best location for a user's information about themselves in the first place.

Don't be upset; this is a common mistake.

If you really did mean to create an article about yourself, please be aware that this is often considered a bad idea, even if you do meet the guidelines for inclusion of biographies. Writing about yourself on Wikipedia can result in significant damage to your reputation, as it's a conflict of interest and widely considered to be an abuse of the project. As a technical note, an autobiographic article is usually eligible for deletion without further discussion under criterion A7 in the criteria for speedy deletion as an article about a real person that does not assert the importance or significance of its subject, or under criterion G11 in the same list, obvious advertising or promotion.

I know Wikipedia can be confusing for new editors, so you are welcome to ask for help at the Teahouse or on my talk page.

A tag has been placed on Example, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.

A tag has been placed on Example requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

The article Example has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

Editing hints edit

   Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you.
  Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. In the future, it is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, reduces edit conflicts, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thank you.
   Welcome to Wikipedia. Your recent contributions to Wikipedia are very much appreciated. However, please take a moment to review your contributions for spelling, grammatical, capitalization, and punctuation errors before you save. This will help lessen the amount of copyediting others must do on the article, and will help maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance of Wikipedia. You might want to consider using the Firefox web browser, which has spell-check built-in, installing the ieSpell extension for Internet Explorer, or setting up spell-check for Opera.

This message is not meant to discourage you from editing Wikipedia but rather to encourage the best possible writing from our authors. Please take a look at the Manual of Style and the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

   Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that one or more recent edit(s) you made did not have an edit summary. You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or to provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances that your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits, an adequate summary may be quite brief.

The edit summary field looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder by setting Preferences → Editing →   Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary, and then click the "Save" button. Thanks!

   Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Before saving your changes to an article, please provide an edit summary for your edits. Thank you.

Your edit has been hit with a bug!
Hello, thanks for your recent contributions to Article. Unfortunately, some text has been lost from the article through your edit. This is not your fault, but a known bug of your browser setup. With certain versions of Microsoft Windows with Firefox together with the Google Toolbar, the end of a very long article may be cut off before you save. Please be careful when you edit long articles and, in the short term, edit just a section at a time. It also seems that the bug is fixed if you use the newest versions, so please upgrade to the latest versions of Firefox and Google Toolbar. (If you would like more details, see this bugzilla page.) For now, please wait a moment with further edits to this article until the lost content is restored. Thank you, and happy editing!  ~~~~
   When moving pages, please remember to fix any double redirects. These can create slow, unpleasant experiences for the reader, waste server resources, and make the navigational structure of the site confusing. Thank you.

Welcome, WikiProject User warnings/old details! I noticed that you joined the discussion on :{}. Participation in the community is encouraged, of course, but your status as a brand new user means that your opinions may be given less weight. Though it may appear helpful to correct typing errors, grammar, etc., please do not go out of your way to bring talk pages to publishing standards, since it is not terribly productive and will tend to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. For more details, see Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. Thank you.

Thank you for reverting vandalism on Wikipedia!

Be sure to put warning tags on the vandal's user talk page (such as , , , ). Add each of these tags on the vandal's talk page, in sequential order, after each instance of vandalism. Adding warnings to the talk page assists administrators in determining whether or not the user should be blocked. If the user continues to vandalize pages after you add the tag, request administrator assistance at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Again, thank you for helping to make Wikipedia better.

Thank you for your suggestion! When you feel an article needs improvement, please feel free to make whatever changes you feel are needed. == Commentary in article ==

Use the discussion tab to find an article's talk page.
Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia! I noticed that you recently added commentary to an article. While Wikipedia welcomes editors' opinions on an article and how it could be changed, these comments are more appropriate for the article's accompanying talk page. If you post your comments there, other editors working on the same article will notice and respond to them and your comments will not disrupt the flow of the article.

Also, be sure to sign your posts on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~) – this will automatically produce a signature so other contributors can identify multiple posts from you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page! And again, thanks for your help!

==Stub template on user page==

Hi WikiProject User warnings. I hope you don't mind that I subst'ed the stub template on your user page and removed the category link; I did this so that your page doesn't turn up in a category of articles for editors to expand (only articles are supposed to be stubs).

==Advice on uploading images==

Hello!

Thanks for uploading some pictures to Wikipedia. I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the requirements and good practices for uploaded images.

 • Pick an image name.
When uploading an image, pick a file name that is descriptive, and unique. Remember that many images may be uploaded about the same topic, and remember that names are case-sensitive.
 • Source the image.
On the image description page, explain where the image came from. If you created the image yourself, then say so. If it's from the web, give a URL. If it's a screenshot of a movie or game, or a scan from a book, give the title.
 • Provide copyright and license information.
This part is a little bit trickier, but it's very important. The copyright of the image generally belongs to whoever created it.
If it's a photograph you took, or an image you created (modifying an image that already exists doesn't count) in software like Photoshop or GIMP, then you hold the copyright. To upload it to Wikipedia, you must agree to license it freely, allowing anyone to use it for any purpose. Some licenses that are available for this purpose, like Creative Commons Attribution, require that credit is given to the original author. (you) Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike adds a requirement to release any further modification to the image under the same or a compatible free license. You can also release it into the public domain (which allows anyone to use it for any purpose without restriction.) To license your image freely, place an appropriate tag on the image description page, like for Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. To release it into the public domain use a tag like Cc0 for Creative Commons Zero or PD-self for a generic waiver. Be sure to mention that you created the image.
If you didn't create the image, or the copyright somehow belongs to another party (like a screenshot, which you might "create", but the copyright belongs to the author of the movie or video game), then you need to find another tag that describes the copyright status of the image. Images used on Wikipedia need to be free for our use and the use of sites which reproduce our content. This means that images cannot have a restriction such as "only for use by Wikipedia", or "for non-commercial use only", or "for educational use". Images without a free license may be usable in certain articles under our policy for non-free content, but such a use must be justified on the image description page.
 • Describe the image.
To another reader, the image may not be immediately understood. A caption in an article doesn't explain the image to a visitor who sees it on its image page. Put a brief explanation of what is in the image on the image description page, similar to what you might include in a caption on an article.

   Hello, I'm ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ. I would like to let you know that a file you created or significantly contributed to, File:Image name, wasn't properly named. Files that aren't properly named are hard to track and may make it hard for other editors to know about the context of the image. It is suggested that, the next time you upload a file, give it a clear and descriptive name. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the help desk. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. Thank you.
==Unspecified source for File:Image name==

Thanks for uploading File:Image name. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

==Image copyright problem with File:Image name==

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Image name. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice?

==Speedy deletion nomination of File:Image name==

A tag has been placed on File:Image name requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a copyright violation and has no credible claim of fair use or permission. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
