Management Review; Doran, G. T. (1981) edit

  Resolved

Can anyone access the following paper? It is a reference in SMART criteria.

  • Doran, G. T. (1981). There's a S.M.A.R.T. way to write management's goals and objectives. Management Review, Volume 70, Issue 11(AMA FORUM), pp. 35–36.

Some things I'd like to do with it:

  1. Confirm the full list of authors. This article lists George Doran, Arthur Miller, and James Cunningham.
  2. Determine what SMART stands for in this paper. Different people say it stands for different things and many of them cite the paper.
  3. Find anything that could be helpful in expanding on the meaning. I think that this article is a helpful secondary source, but I think it is worth checking it against the primary source before citing it.

Two Highbeam articles edit

  Resolved

It's a pretty petty request (given that it's for an article on a film soundtrack), but I was hoping that someone with Highbeam access (my own has expired) would be able to access these two articles for me; they should hopefully provide the last few ounces of meat to take a stub to WP:GA soon. There's certainly no rush or urgency involved here but I figured it wouldn't hurt to drop a request in case someone had the time to spare. My email address is tied to my account so I can be reached that way. Thanks in advance to anyone who picks this one up. GRAPPLE X 03:57, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Google Books edit

  Resolved

I'm wondering whether anyone can see page 193 of Ronald Hyam, Empire and Sexuality: The British Experience, Manchester University Press, 1990.

Niall Ferguson cites this for information about the murder of Hulda Stumpf. Specifically Ferguson writes that someone from the Mkamba ethnic group may have been responsible for it, and the footnote is p. 193 of Hyam's book. This turns out to be practically the only page Google won't let me see, confirming my suspicions that they are now psychic on top of everything else. :)

It would be very helpful if someone could email me a screenshot of that page, or if it's only a sentence let me know here what it says. SlimVirgin (talk) 21:06, 11 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(sexual assault trigger warning; not pleasant)

Give this a try: [14] --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 21:17, 11 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And the rest of the paragraph: [15] --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 21:19, 11 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So in all: "Some forcible circumcisions were performed. Early in January 1930 came the terrible news of the murder of Miss Hilda Stumpf, a seventy-year old missionary with the Africa Inland Mission at Kijabe. She was raped several times, then viciously circumcised. She died from the operation, which led to yet further genital mutilation. The suspects were Mkamba and not Kikuyu, however." --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 21:24, 11 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Atethnekos, that's brilliant. I see Hyam has a footnote 29 after his sentence that it was the Mkamba that were responsible. So now I'm wondering what footnote 29 says. It seems to be between pages 197–200 (the book has the footnotes after each chapter, rather than at the end, and this is chapter eight). Can you by any chance see that footnote? SlimVirgin (talk) 22:00, 11 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@SlimVirgin: Sorry, I can't seem to see the endnote (that's the better term when they're not on the page footer), even with crafty searching. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 04:12, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, Atethnekos, I didn't see your reply before this. Someone else mentioned this on my talk page, so it made me look here. Thank you very much for looking for this. SlimVirgin (talk) 15:21, 27 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Marsicano et al. requested edit

  Resolved

I am uncomfortable with how the link between GERD and halitosis is discussed. This systematic review I believe will be better than a pile of primary sources we have currently, since it will summarize them for us (hopefully). I want to go deeper than the abstract, does anyone have the full text please? Paywalled here: [30]. Many thanks-- Lesion (talk) 17:19, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[31] OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:40, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! As I suspected 2/3 studies that met the inclusion criteria used questionnaires to detect halitosis. Since 5‑72% of people who think they have bad breath don't really have bad breath, simply asking someone in a questionnaire is a v unreliable method of detecting halitosis, making the conclusion in the abstract of this systematic review a bit misleading "According to three studies, halitosis could be one of several extraesophageal symptoms or manifestations in GERD patients." Although not factually inaccurate, they should have been responsible enough to state that halitosis symptom does not necessarily (or even commonly) equate to halitosis sign. Anyway, no-one else is likely interested in this. I'll finish reading and then rework the article in question. Thanks again!

Seeking legal commentary on "warrant canary" edit

  Resolved

Re: Warrant canary. Specifically, what are lawyers saying about the concept, whether it has or will be tested in court, whether it will be allowed to work (that is, if sites hosting such canaries will be allowed to remove them if they receive a secret order). I did a dumb search of Lexis/Nexis for the phrase, but I don't know other legal resources to search. Where else to look? --Lexein (talk) 11:30, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

These are pretty new, and I don't think there really is any commentary available yet. I didn't see anything on Westlaw, and this post seems to be the only thing on the Electronic Frontier Foundation's website. Probably the first thing that will be available is law firm memos, but I searched Knowledge Mosaic's database and didn't see anything there either. John M Baker (talk) 03:26, 10 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Can you set yourself up a tickler to recheck in a month? I set up a Google alert, but I think you know what a waste of time that is. I should have stated that this is about Warrant canary, and a possibly circular reference discussed at Talk:Warrant canary. (Amended original post.) --Lexein (talk) 23:54, 10 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty sure I won't remember - you better remind me. You might also want to ask on WP:RD. John M Baker (talk) 01:27, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Complete text: ON THE LEVEL? As Secretary of the International Flat Earth Society, Samuel Shenton of London holds some rather strong beliefs, viz.: traveling around the world is really like walking around the edge of a plate; beyond the edge is ice, and that's where all those people reported missing have gone; the world has a roof, but it's too high to keep the rain off. Last week Mr. Shenton was angry with the British Broadcasting Corporation, which had invited him to present his views on a television show. .. But time ran out, leaving Mr. Shenton on edge. "It was obvious from the start," he told a reporter, "that the B. B. C. didn't intend to take us seriously. I wasn't allowed to explain our beliefs in detail." Indigenous cultures and languages of Brazil edit

  Resolved

I desperately need the following source for expanding the article List of extinct indigenous peoples of Brazil. It is a bit large, consisting if 90 pages. I am searching for the past 6-7 months and have failed to secure it despite my best efforts. Description: Ribeiro, D. (1967). Indigenous cultures and languages of Brazil. In J. H. Hopper (Ed.), Indians of Brazil in the Twentieth Century (pp. 77–166). Washington D.C.: Institute for cross-cultural research.

There's a copy in my library, which is closed until Thursday. I don't know if I'll be able to scan the whole thing but if you don't have any luck before then I can try to pick out the useful parts. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 18:49, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your help. What I want is information regarding Table 5.2 (Should be there in page no.92, Number and Percentage of Known Brazilian Indigenous Groups by Intensity of Contact in 1900 and 1957). I have table 5.2 with me, but I don't have the details. According to the table, out of the 230 tribes which were present in Brazil as of 1900, 87 became extinct, 38 got assimilated, 45 came in to permanent contact... and so on. I want the names of these tribes, and their date of extinction if possible. Once again, thanking you for your help. Yawalapiti (talk) 04:19, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the information you're looking for is on pages 129–160, which is a list of tribes with names, languages, short descriptions and categorisations using the terms used in that table (isolated, extinct, permanent contact, integrated, etc.). Is that right? If so, email me and I'll reply with a PDF of those pages. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 21:45, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Also, Rowan, if you email me back I can send it to you through email. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 08:57, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So sorry about my late reply, I have just seen it now! When I click the link you kindly sent me I get to the page where the document is and I can read it all but the orange download button asks for authentication, either through a scribd account (which I think I do not have) or through facebook (not my cup of tea). No need for you to send me the document, though, I have already used it in the article but I will bear in mind for the future. Thank you again for help!--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 12:44, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Making of Humanity by Robert Briffault edit

  Disregard

If possible could somebody please send me pp. 196+ 197 of the above book, which are required to verify a dubious Jagged_85 edit to Avicenna. Thanks. --Merlinme (talk) 16:41, 16 December 2013 (UTC) --Merlinme (talk) 16:41, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, ignore me, I've just had a look at the Robert Briffault page and the book is available online. --Merlinme (talk) 16:45, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

redirection of an article to another edit

  Resolved

Dear Madam/Sir,

I just tried to redirect the article 'tympanocentesis' to the article 'myringotomy', wich, to my knowledge, are supposed to be completely synonymous. This action was not granted for some reason, so hereby I'd like to make a motion to do it.

Best regards,

Gergely Furmann

Hi Gergely,
This source [80] says that Tympanocentesis is a puncture with a hollow needle, and a Myringotomy a small incision with a knife. So I guess they are considered to be separate procedures. --Atethnekos (DiscussionContributions) 15:55, 22 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Coal balls 2 edit

  Resolved

A source cited this at Google Books as "one of the most reliable single texts in the field of paleobotany", noting a "good section on... coal balls". Such a source would be invaluable to my research on coal balls. --Σσς(Sigma) 06:17, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I saw this on my watchlist and I just had to come here to say that I enjoyed the original and I'm looking forward to the sequel Coal Balls 2: Electric Boogaloo. Also, in actual helpful news, I don't have access to this book, but I do have access to a similar 2009 book which may be a later edition: Paleobotany : The Biology and Evolution of Fossil Plants by Taylor, Edith L.; Taylor, Thomas N.; Krings, Michael. Here are some relevant pages. Gamaliel (talk) 06:40, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is an excellent source. Thank you. :)
On a slightly related note, "A new technique for thin sections of pyritized permineralization" (1985) by Shya Chitaley, which featured in the "Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology" would also be helpful. Σσς(Sigma) 07:23, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Atlas and text-book of human anatomy / by Dr. Johannes Sobotta ... ; edited, with additions, by J. Playfair McMurrich ... edit

  Resolved

Hi,

Would be wonderful if anyone who has access to a partner institution to HathiTrust could access; volume 2 at http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/003305739 , and also volume 2 (& maybe 3) at http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/002075755 These are entire books, but are not copyrighted as they are printed pre 1923. Thanks very much, going to add them to User:CFCF/Sobotta for use at WP:Anatomy (current volume 2 images are of very low quality) CFCF (talk) 18:31, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Available fullview at v1 v3. It seems that HathiTrust frequently limits distribution. In this case, they seem to be applying the 1873 cutoff to a work which was originally German on v2 as seen outside the US. It might be available through openlibrary in one or other language. Check here. LeadSongDog come howl! 20:38, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help, but I already have access to those books, and the images have been uploaded to Wikipedia. The reason I am asking for access to volume 2 in particular is because the volume 2 available at openlibrary is not of very high quality. I have also ordered the 1913 volume 1 edition in German so as to add these images, but I have no high-quality edition of the second book. (I have also contacted the HathiTrust, but have not yet received a reply). CFCF (talk) 20:46, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was able to resolve this issue on my own. The website tolerates download from a US IP-adress, but not international ones. CFCF (talk) 13:05, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
