Welcome to the India quiz. The quiz is a general knowledge quiz centred on India that any registered Wikipedians can enter. It is run as a friendly competition to test and improve your knowledge of India. Most importantly, it's supposed to be fun. The questions and answers would be condensed in the form of "Did you know..." facts on Portal:India to be updated once or twice a week. Also, the relevant articles that get quoted in these quiz questions would hopefully get a face-lift with increased attention as a result of the questions.

  1. All questions must have an India-related theme or India-related connection.
  2. Any registered Wikipedian can answer a quiz question, but to ask a question you must first earn the right by being the first person to answer the previous one correctly. If the current question is still open and you think you know the answer, post your answer below and wait for an adjudication from the person who placed the question. Remember to sign your post with ~~~~.
  3. If you are the first person to post the correct answer, the asker will post a message below your answer confirming you gave the correct response.
  4. You now have the baton and 24 hours to post a new question. If a new question is not posted by you within that time limit, the previous asker can post a new question in lieu of yourself.
  5. If the baton holder and previous asker fails to ask the question within 2 days (48 hours), any wikipedian can ask the question on his/her behalf. The original baton holder should not attempt the question asked on his/her behalf.
  6. If a question remains unanswered for more than 10 days, any Wikipedian can replace the question with a simpler one.
  7. When 25 questions have been asked, a round is over. The leader on the answer tally at the end of each round is declared the winner of the round. The questions asked during the round are archived.
  8. The leader-tally then resets with all users back to zero to begin the next round, with the user that answered the last question of the previous round asking the first question of the present round.
  9. To archive the page at the end of each round, see the archiving rules.

Question guidelinesEdit

  1. If you find that no-one is able to get the answer to your question, consider offering clues or replacing your question with an easier one. The aim is to keep the quiz moving.
  2. Questioners should try to offer at least one hint every 2 days whether or not the question has been attempted.
  3. The aim of giving a hint is to make it easier for participants to answer the question. Therefore, hints or clues should narrow down the question or throw more light on the question rather than complicating it. Hints should not take the form of questions/riddles.
  4. Remember that you may have an international audience. Keep quiz questions relevant to India in some way.

Aryan 14 sep is right related to 3rd link hint. decode the other links hints ? Even with giveaway date, the possibilities are quite enormous. I hope the hints are directly related to the answer (and not clarifying the language of the question) i.e the answer is a Hindu festival (but in that case what is the relevance of the date? because hindu festivals are never fixed) Clueless :( --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 10:53, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[]
Is this something to do with More Islands in Belize and the Peacock? regentspark (comment) 16:10, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[]

If no one is able to answer, @Umesah86:, I think this question should be removed under rule 6.--Aryan ( है?) 04:28, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 6 : Last hint is cricket. otherwise change the question. ☺☺☺-Umesah86 Umesh 05:10, 9 January 2016 (UTC).[]

I'd suggest you should provide less open-ended clues when more general clues are not helping. Since you are the question-maker, and know the answer, it may seem to you that the clues are easy. However, lack of attempts should suggest that clues can be improved. Please try that before changing the question. The burden of providing a series of good yet not give-away, succinct yet elusive clues is on the question-maker. Changing the question cannot be a method unless the question is totally absurd.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:48, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[]

Hello everyone I am a new user to this quiz. I think the answer is cricketer Robin Singh - 22sumit (talk) 12:28, 13 January 2016 (UTC).[]

How "hindi" is connected to "Robin"? and Robben Island is an island in South Africa not South America --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 13:25, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[]
Well, Robin Singh seems to be a good match for the clues. He is from Trinidad (an island) where Hindi/Bhojpuri is a predominant language. The bird would be Indian robin! A bit far-fetched, but possible.--Dwaipayan (talk) 21:00, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[]
Ooooh, it is possible... just the hindi connect is still bugging me :( But honestly I really liked this question, it gave us so much new things to learn :) Doesn't matter what the answer is, I'll surely remember it for a longer time unlike rest of the Google it out questions. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 06:30, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[]
Y 22sumit. You are right. Robin Singh was born on 14 Sep - Hindi diwas. Baton goes to 22sumit. -- --Umesah86 Umesh 09:30, 14 January 2016 (UTC).[]

Q 57.10Edit

? Connect (1) Jainism, (2) Saint Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan, (3) a mountain range between two European countries and (4) Bajrangi Bhaijan. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 18:51, 19 January 2016 (UTC) EDIT: There is no transitive connection between the given 4 points and the answer. The answer is directly related to each one of them. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 05:24, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[]

the mountain range is jura, it lies between France and Switzerland, Switzerland was in a photo in a calendar in Bajrang i Bhaijann. Jainism is ffound in Switzerland.--Aryan ( है?) 12:22, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[]
Y Jura goes to the connect but not the rest of the part. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 16:52, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 1: There is an achievement associated with Saint GRRSI which was previously associated with the answer I am looking for. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 05:20, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Hint 2: Jainism is related to the answer just because of a namesake. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 14:26, 22 January 2016 (UTC)[]

Anyone attempting this one? or should I remove it? --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 18:55, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[]

  • Add more explicit clues.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:29, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 3.1: The name of the mountain range coined a term in the field of geological time scale, later the term is popularized my a movie franchise. That movie franchise is related to the answer. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 05:37, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Hint 3.2: Bajrangi Bhaijan is a giveaway part in this question, now I regret giving it. Apart from the obvious competitive rivalry, the answer is related to it in a different way as well. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 05:37, 2 February 2016 (UTC)[]

According to the wiki rules made by extra ordinary wikiquizers, question must be removed as 10 days over. 22sumit (talk) 07:54, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[]

Y I was about to remove the question but thanks Dwaipayan. The answer is Bahubali!
  • Bahubali was the son of Rishabhanatha, the first tirthankara of Jainism.
  • It held the Guinness world record of largest poster which was broken my SGRRS later that year.
  • Same VFX team for 'Bahubali' and 'Jurassic World'.
  • K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, father of S. S. Rajamouli and screen writer of Bajrangi Bhaijan. --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 06:15, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[]

Yes you are absolutely right. Baton goes to Umesah86.--22sumit (talk) 04:37, 25 February 2016 (UTC).[]

After Indian Ocean I thought of the same, Rupee, but when you said "think of headquarters" I discarded it and how Victoria is connected? --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 16:11, 25 February 2016 (UTC).[]

New Q 57.12Edit

A came under the influence (probably not direct influence though) of B and joined C. Later, A worked on a Hindi film D based to some extent on the activity of C. A acted as well as participated in some pre-production work of that film. Later on A became heavily involved in the film industry, and was particularly notable for his contribution to a regional film industry. Identify the characters.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:06, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[]

All I can get is, someone very famous in regional cinema? Hints needed --Ritwik.m07 (talk) 05:48, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[]

I think answer is Mithun Chakrabarty. If not, then please give hint. - Umesah86 Umesh 07:46, 1 July 2016 (UTC).[]

Hint 1. A joined C before India's independence. --Dwaipayan (talk) 13:52, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 2. According to at least one source, the president of India encouraged A to make cinema in that particular regional industry.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:47, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 3. The director of the Hindi film D is noted for many award-winning films, including one film that dealt with the theme of reincarnation.--Dwaipayan (talk) 01:11, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[]

I think Answer is Jyoti Prasad Agarwala famous for Assamese regional cinema --- Umesah86Umesh 05:18, 12 July 2016 (UTC).. According to the question, answer should be Bimal Roy --- 22sumit (talk) 08:07, 13 July 2016 (UTC)..[]

Update Bimal Roy is not the person A. However, the director mentioned in Hint 3 is Bimal Roy. So, the director of the film D is Bimal Roy. You wil have to dig further to answer the question.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:27, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[]

A is Dilip Kumar. B is Ashok Kumar. C is Bombay Talkies. D is Madhumati movie... --- 22sumit (talk) 08:36, 14 July 2016 (UTC)..[]

Wrong answer. Dilip Kumar is not known for significant participation in any regional industry. Madhumati is the film that I mentioned as a hint in Hint 3 (film with reincarnation as the theme). But D in the original question is not Madhumati. D is another film directed by Bimal Roy.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:58, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 4. A is not a hero or leading actor. B was an exceptional leader in Indian independence movement.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:58, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[]

Pehla aadmi, Ashok Kumar, Subhas Chandra Bose?rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 11:51, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[]
D is Pehla Aadmi, B is Subhash Chandra Bose. So, you are correct. C is Indian National Army. Since you got two of 4 things correct, you are the winner. However, it will be great if you can find out D. Can you?--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:17, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[]

Do you mean A? My guess was Ashok Kumar as above, who acted in Bengali regional cinema as well.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) I correct myself. Nazir Hussain is A.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 09:49, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[]

Yes you are correct. A is Nazir Hussain, also known as the grandfather of Bhojpuri cinema. Yoir turn now.--Dwaipayan (talk) 01:31, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[]

I came from land that is famous, among other things, for its association with a golden haired boy. I spoke the language of the golden haired boy, and my travel to a young city was also on account of this language. A tragedy that befell me brought forth an important social issue in Indian society of the time. Who am I?rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 15:11, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 1: The Golden haired boy spoke many languages, I learned the first that he spoke.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 12:05, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[]
Hint 2. The country where I was born did not exist three hundred years ago, nor did the young city where tragedy befell me.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 23:59, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[]
Is this question about a person, place or a social/cultural event? :)--Omer123hussain (talk) 11:35, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[]

The question asks you to identify a person. I have described in the question hints towards what is known about him.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 12:54, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 3. The social issue that came to be highlighted in my tragic case was and is still an issue that is actually a problem worldwide in many different forms, and in fact people from different parts of India have highlighted the same issue manifesting in various forms. The Indian chapter of an event celebrating people of a certain part of the world (first started outside India) was almost put into jeopardy in the time after the tragedy.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 13:40, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[]
I will give one more hint seeing as no one appears to be able to attempt.

Hint 6. The question asks about quite recent events.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 09:53, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[]
Hint 7. The young city where the tragedy struck is colloquially referred to and is considered a part of one of the major cities of India that actually has a very ancient history.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 07:58, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[]
Is the young city Noida?--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:03, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[]
The young city is not Noida, but I dare I say you are very hot on the trail. The tragedy mentioned in the question occurred at a place in the young city that is within 40km of Noida (I am helping the question move along).rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 15:09, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[]
Ok. I think the answer relates to the African person from Congo, who was killed in Gurgaon/Delhi, in May 2016. The man was probably from Democratic Republic of the Congo. The social issue is racism. --Dwaipayan (talk) 15:27, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[]

You are absolutely correct in your interpretations, but still haven't identified the subject. The question asks you to identify the Congolese man who died following an assault in or near Vasantkunj of New Delhi. Congo as a country did not exist till the end of 19th century, nor did the city of New Delhi. The gentleman's death soured relations between African countries and India. Envoys from a number of African countries highlighted this as an example of Racism in India, and threatened to boycott the official celebrations of Africa day, necessiating high level government interventions. Tensions in ethnic relations in India has been highlighted by many different groups who live as expatriates in different parts of the country. I dare say Dwaipayan has interpreted the question correctly, but remains to identify the person (he is easily googleable, but no wikipedia article). Baton is almost yours Dwai.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 11:06, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[]

Hint 8. The gentleman's name has three parts, forename, middlename and surname.rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 11:57, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[]
Masonda Ketanda Olivier. And that golden haired boy is Tarzan?--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:24, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[]
You are absolutely correct, the answer is Masonda Ketada Olivier, or M.T. Olivier for short, who was Congolese national. The golden haired boy is actually Tintin. Tintin's original language is actually French language, and Olivier's work (although he is also described as a student) was teaching French in a language school in New Delhi. India has a long and widely appreciated peacekeeping mission in Congo. Baton is yours Dwaipayan. rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 21:24, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[]

A royal princess came to Delhi with her son and daughter. With nowhere to go she had to sleep on the railway station. Indira Gandhi got to know about her plight and she was allotted a palace in Delhi. But it was nothing like a palace since it was long abandoned and became home to snakes and wild animals. The princess died there and her children had to burn her body to save it from grave robbers. The "palace" is located at a prominent place in Delhi.
