Welcome to the contest department. The Cricket Project runs a variety of contests. The aim of these contests to motivate increased participation and quality in cricket articles by offering a form of friendly competition for project members making improvements to them. The project offers the following contests:

  • The primary contest available is a simple rolling competition that awards points for improving articles.
  • A rolling competition for quality new article creation.
  • A monthly photo competition.
  • The world's largest cricket quiz.

A number of prizes are available for winners.

Contest coordinators edit

Contest coordinators 'umpire' our contests to make sure they are run fairly. The role is voluntary, with no elections required. If you would like to volunteer, please list your username below:

General article expansion contest edit

The general article expansion contest is a rolling competition designed to motivate people to expand articles beyond B-class standard and aim for as many GA and FA-class standard articles as possible.

The contest is simple in structure and administered by the contest coordinators. The following instructions apply:

  1. The contest runs from the first to last day of each month. At the start of the month, editors may pre-emptively nominate the articles they intend on improving (and then have until the end of the month to make the improvements), or they may simply list the articles that they have worked on at the end of the month.
  2. Runs are awarded based on an article progressing up the assessment scale. To be eligible, articles should be re-assessed within the scoring period.
  3. The claiming editor must have made a meaningful change to an aspect of the article that leads directly to an increase in its assessment rating. Such improvements can be focused on one or more aspects of the B-class criteria. For instance, adding references, improving structure or grammar, adding images, or expanding content; these changes should be significant and incidental changes should not be claimed. The claiming editor will be the main contributor (or co-contributor) to the article for the month.
  4. As articles are improved throughout the month, contestants should list their articles at WP:CRICAS for independent re-assessment.
  5. Once an article has been re-assessed, contestants are expected to update the entries subpage with the improved assessment class and the claimed points, based on the points table (see below).
  6. At the end of the month, no new entries should be added to the entries subpage until it has been reset by a contest coordinator as part of the closing process (detailed separately in the instructions to contest coordinators).

Prizes
  1. Each month, the participant with the highest number of points will be awarded the Golden Bat, while the second place-getter will be awarded the Silver Bat.
  2. The editor who has the highest accumulated total of points over the course of the entire year of contests (January to December inclusive) will be awarded the Cricket Editor of the Year Trophy and the Writer's Barnstar.

Contest entries edit

The beginning class of the article is the classification at the beginning of the month. Please add entries in alphabetical order by user name in the following form:

Nominees should track their own entries, updating the table with the new classes and points claimed/earned as articles are reclassified (to avoid month-end congestion). This is self-scoring (but not self-assessing) so requests for assessments should be made through the normal channels (i.e. at WP:CRICAS up to and including B-Class), although nominees may self-assess articles up to C-class at discretion. Experienced members may check entries for the significance of a nominees contribution and the points they have claimed; if they are satisfied they should sign the "checked" box. Entries may be progressively checked through the scoring period. If a "checked" nomination is upgraded, the nominator must remove a notation that the nomination has been checked. At month end, the closing coordinator will check the total points claimed and update the yearly scoreboard.

New article contest edit

The new article contest is a rolling competition designed to motivate people to create quality new cricket-related articles up to B-class standard.

  1. The contest runs from the first to last day of each month. At the start of the month, editors may pre-emptively list the articles they intend on creating (and then have until the end of the month to create them), or they may simply list the articles that they have worked on at the end of the month.
  2. Runs are awarded per new article created and are valued on where they fall on the assessment rating, from Stub-class to to B-class level.
  3. The claiming editor must have created the article, or worked closely alongside the article creator if a joint-creation.
  4. As articles are created throughout the month, contestants should list their creations at WP:CRICAS for independent assessment, although it is acceptable to self-assess up to C-class.
  5. Once an article has been created and assessed, contestants are expected to update this page with the assessment class and the claimed runs, based on the runs table (see below).
  6. At the end of the month, no new entries should be added to the entries subpage until it has been reset by a contest coordinator as part of the closing process (detailed separately in the instructions to contest coordinators).

Photo contest edit

Introduction edit

The photo contest is a monthly competition where project members are invited to submit cricket-related photographs. These will then be judged by members of the cricket project, who will vote to decide the monthly winner. The winning photograph will be featured in the project newsletter, The Leg Stump. The 12 winning photographs throughout the year will automatically be entered into the end of year vote for 'Cricket Photograph of the Year'.

Entry instructions edit

To be considered for the competition photographs must be your own work. The photograph should be uploaded to Wikicommons using this link. Once the image has been uploaded to Wikicommons, it should be posted here under the entries section using the following code:

The Cricket Project quiz is the largest cricket quiz in the world. It is a fun way to test your knowledge of cricket. But no Googling!!! At the end of each year, the user with the most correct answers will be crowned the 'Wikiproject Cricket Quiz Champion', earning themselves the Champions Trophy.

Rules edit

  1. Anyone can answer a quiz question, but to ask a question you must first earn the right by being the first person to answer the previous one correctly. If the current question is still open and you think you know the answer, post your answer below and wait for an adjudication from the person who placed the question. Remember to sign your post with ~~~~.
  2. If you are the first person to post the correct answer, the asker will post a message below your answer confirming you gave the correct response.
  3. You now have the baton and should post a new question as quickly as possible. If you do not post a new question within a reasonable time frame, a comment should first be made, then anyone can either put out a general invite for a new question, or post one themselves.

  1. If you're finding no-one can get the answer to your question, consider offering clues or replacing your question with an easier one. The aim is to keep the quiz moving.
  2. Remember that you have an international audience. Keep quiz questions relevant to international cricket in some way.
