Blogs have evolved dramatically in recent years and many have become central forums for public conversation and even journalism. Vanity Blogs, which are purely an individual's personal pulpit may, in most cases, be easily excluded from an encyclopedic record, but open multi-user multi-threading forums are an entirely different case. These forums have become more a Public Square than has ever existed and will, as a class, only grow in significance. Even as a matter of simple historic record, the significant multi-user blogs of today will be items of interest for future research, and a concise record and history of them should be a part of a project like Wikipedia.

The purpose of this WikiProject has two main parts. First, it seeks to expand the coverage of weblogs on Wikipedia to the point where it is the most comprehensive resource in existence on this emerging aspect of online and media culture. Second, it seeks to do so sanely, and with an eye towards making sure the coverage reflects what is important about blogs, and what is not a mess of vanity articles, self-promotion, and trivia.

  6. Sara.G.Goldstein Newbie here who'd like to help, esp. in light of the "war on blogs"! Not every blog deserves an individual entry, but the main areas of the blogosphere definitely do as they're providing substantive alternative coverage of their topics. Let me know how I can help!

  14. J.C. Martinez Please, put me into humble service to this project! I'm a new Wikipedian, but, hopefully learning fast. If I may, I can help contribute to defining the reach of blogging as a new concept, including it as a vehicle for introducing terms into the "human story" such as the social sphere, feed proliferation, audience space ... in short, got some ideas on the theory behind blogging.

  27. ANZLitLovers Interested in literary fiction review blogs as they begin to take up the space being vacated by newspaper reviewing and provide reference sources for authors and books; p articularly keen to see that this project covers the diversity of global literatures, not just US and UK.

I'd like to help other notable hyperlocal Blogs qualify for articles on Wikipedia.

We are going to start assessing articles in our scope, such as blogs and blog hosting services, and nominate non-notable ones for deletion in the process.

Please use {{WikiProject Blogging}} to assess articles. Anyone, member of this project or not, may assess articles. Please read Wikipedia:WikiProject Blogging/Assessment.

Currently we suggest you adhere to Wikipedia:Websites. It's worth noting that a criterion for website inclusion is of been covered in (inter)national news. At some point we may want to more finely tune these criteria for blogs; paying particular attention to what level of news coverage, both local and national, is considered notable.

Where to put the informationEdit

One thing we want to avoid is the creation of permastubs. Since blogs are somewhat prone to having "fifteen minutes of fame," this is a particular danger, and so care is needed in deciding what topics deserve articles, and what topics are best dealt with in the context of other articles. Some guidelines. Let us take a hypothetical blogger Joe Q. Blogger whose blog is called Quirkblog

  • If Mr. Blogger's only claim to fame is the success of Quirkblog, the article should exist at Quirkblog.
  • If Quirkblog's only claim to notability is that it was made by Mr. Blogger, the article should exist at Joe Q. Blogger.
  • If Quirkblog would be notable regardless of its creator (i.e. if it has gotten media coverage, etc.) and Joe Q. Blogger is notable beyond his blog, both articles should exist.

It is asked for members of this WikiProject to help categorise blog-related articles into the relevant categories, such as Category:Blogs and Category:Blog software.
