Harriet Tubman (c. March 1822 – March 10, 1913) was an African-American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped in 1849, then returned 13 times to rescue approximately 70 of her enslaved family and friends. Traveling by night, she used a network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she helped fugitives go farther north into British North America, and helped newly freed slaves find work. Tubman met John Brown in 1858, and helped him plan and recruit for his 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry. When the Civil War began, she worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. The first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, she guided the raid at Combahee Ferry, which liberated more than 700 slaves. Later in life she was an activist for women's suffrage. After her death, she was celebrated as an American icon. (Full article...)

  • Most recent similar article(s): A bio of an American (William Hayden English) is planned for 27 August. More narrowly, a bio of an African-American woman (Eve Russell) ran 5 July.
  • Main editors: Scartol, RL0919
  • Promoted: 26 November 2007
  • Reasons for nomination: Level-4 vital article with recent interest due to a change in the plan to put her on the US $20 bill, plus a movie about her is being released in November. Date is the 170th anniversary of her escape from slavery. Previously ran as TFA on 8 March 2009. Scartol did the original FA nom in 2007; I've refreshed it recently to ensure it meets current standards.

Coord note Promoting this. I feel that the full-length image of her works well at thumbnail and the one that was used above isn't as good, but whatever image works for people, I'm fine with.--Wehwalt (talk) 06:51, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Wehwalt I'm good either way with the photo choice. --RL0919 (talk) 06:56, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded a better version of the portrait photo above. Kaldari (talk) 01:49, 26 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
