OK so I created {{TurkishProvince}} but need to copy over the .gifs that are called, how is that best done, they are MetaWiki'ed at the Turkish WP site, but I don't know how to extract them from MetaWiki to the English WP site. Bleh. Well, while you were doing that I created this as Template:Infobox province TR for consistency with other templates on English Wikipedia. However, I also put in a Template:TurkeyProv redirect so that the requested name will work. USA-centric

Several articles are USA-centric, such as Intelligent transportation system discussing Suburbs and "homeland security" as if these are universal social phenomena. A template that would flag that would be useful so that non-US people can come around and add perspective.

There may be a need for other "X-centric" templates.

It does, but the USA-Centric problem is so common it deserves its own category. It would also allow non-USA wikipedians an index to focus on. Samfreed 10:18, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

I suspect that virtually all the pages with 'Globalize' on them have it due to USA-centrism, but I created {{Globalize/USA}} to provide a specific sub-set. Relevance Template

The following three templates are being proposed for deletion: Template:Exclusion, Template:Inclusion-Section, and Template:Exclusion-Section. These tags, although useful in drawing attention to talk pages where the relevance of content is disputed, can also fuel disputes by being used in revert wars. As a result, I am requesting a more general template to identify disputes. The template may be worded in the following way: "The relevance of particular information in this article is disputed. Would it work just as well to delete "The relevance of" from the template, so that it says the "Particular information" is disputed? Or is it really important that the relevance rather than the information itself is the topic of dispute? --Tifego 04:40, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Video Template

I have been editing an entry and have been advised that there is something called a 'video template' which can link a video or DVD reference number to an external site/database which can then use the code for a search. Hi. I'm not sure what you are looking for. There is a Cite video template which can be used to put citations of videos into a standard format. There are also templates like IMDB title which allow linking to information about a movie on an external site, though not a particular video or DVD.

Fair Use Claim needed

I have seen lot of images with tags that require a fair use rationale without a one completely. A template to place on either the image or the uploaders talk page would be helpful. Legal citation templates

I noticed you have a Supreme Court case template, but not one for other court cases. It would be nice to have an easy way to format and link to a decision for federal district and appellate court decisions. —This unsigned comment was added by 65.102.51.155 (talk • contribs) .

It would be nice, but I'm not aware of any web resource which allows open access to the decisions in all Federal cases. If you know of one then a template could certainly be set up to link to it. I know that it would be a very simple template to make, but I've noticed that a template something along the lines of the following would be useful, as the disambiguation template isn't specific enough:

explicit language template

I believe it would be a good idea to have a small template on pages with profanity. i have seen and dealt with small children who have inadvertantly come upon pages with multiple profanities.

Unfortunately, this is a perennial complaint against established standards. See Wikipedia:No disclaimer templates, Wikipedia talk:Content labeling proposal, and m:End-user image suppression. I think that some means of allowing users to 'opt out' of certain types of content would be beneficial to Wikipedia, but to date no such effort has been accepted and every template created for this purpose has been summarily deleted (most recently last week). --CBDunkerson 11:51, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Request Indianapolis 500 template

Request that it be in the same format as what was witnessed for the template at the bottom of the Australian Open page, with links to each individual year of the event (years currently being researched for inclusion, but already with pages already extant, to differing degrees of detail, for the 1911, 1912, 1950-1960, and 1965 races). speedy deletion for the reason of advertising or spam

Because the determination that something is 'advertising' or 'spam' can be subjective there isn't a speedy deletion criterion which covers those and thus no template for them. However, you can use {{prod|advertisement}} and if no-one removes the tag within five days it may be deleted by an admin (per Wikipedia:Proposed deletion). The base 'db' template can also be used with any reason under the form {{db|spam}}, but as noted this should only be used for established speedy delete criteria. --CBDunkerson 16:54, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

US Senator Succession box

The usage of the Succession box template for US Senator is remarkably un uniform. The class of the senator is sometimes included, but sometimes not. Likewise, the name of the second senator of the state delegation is sometimes mentioned, but sometimes not.

Consider for example the Trent Lott page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trent_Lott

It states that Lott is class 1 and that he serves alongside Thad Cochran.

His predecessor is John Stennis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_C._Stennis

Here, we are informed of his class (class 1) but not of the name of the senator who served alongside him. Yet this information is available here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Congressional_Delegations_from_Mississippi#United_States_Senate

His predecessor is Theodore G. Bilbo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Bilbo The succession box informs one neither of his class nor of the name of the senator he served alongside of.

The Stennis and Bilbo pages actually both use the default {{succession box}} template and the absence of the 'class' on Bilbo is because it just wasn't input. On the Lott page there is a specialized {{Incumbent U.S. Senator box}} template which has an additional parameter for the 'served alongside' bit. There was also a {{U.S. Senator box}} with the same 'served alongside' option. I made changes to add the 'incumbent' features to 'U.S. Senator box' and then made the 'incumbent' template a redirect to it. Thus, Template:U.S. Senator box can now be used to do everything that was previously achieved with the three different templates. --CBDunkerson 01:30, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Chinese Characters Templates

I would like a template that would alert readers to deal with articles with Chinese in the following ways:

  • Translate pinyin to the corresponding chinese symbol(s)
  • Translate chinese romanization to the corresponding pinyin or chinese
  • Put simplified symbols next to traditional symbols and vice versa
  • Translate english translations of chinese back to chinese and vice versa

This seems too involved to handle with templates. It would be a tall order even for user scripts and Wiki templates aren't the same as a full programming language. You might try the existing Pinyin/Chinese auto conversion tools here. --CBDunkerson 20:56, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Days Template

Recently, individual days such as June 10, 2004 and June 11, 2004 have been getting their own articles, listing the news events happening on those days. My suggestion is for a template, similar to Template:yearbox allowing one to navigate throught time by day, months and years. There is currently no standard form of these articles, compare March 31, 2004 to April 1, 2004. Perhaps we need a Wikiproject:dates? LukeSurl 23:43, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Delta Force template

Taking a look at Delta Force 2 and other games in the series, it appears we could really do with a template to join those articles together. As it is, there are seven games and one expansion that need to be added, to avoid the annoying list at the bottom of each of their pages. The games that need to be included in the template are:

Some of these already call Template:Infobox VG. That template includes options for 'preceded by' and 'followed by' which allow you to include links to related games. I added a 'followed by' parameter to Delta Force (computer game) as an example. Would that cover what you are looking for or do you need something else? --CBDunkerson 21:04, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
I was looking more for a way to allow the reader to navigate through the whole series at once - as in the case of games like Unreal Tournament. Unfortunately, tying them together with the "followed by" parameter would tie them together in an illogical way, since not all the games are real "sequels" to each other. Others: Edna Mode, Mirage, Gazerbeam.

fictional

I was thinking that it might be a good idea to have a template indicating that a given page is about fictional material, seeing how some pages about characters do not mention that they are from a fictional universe until the middle of the article. Arctic Gnome 20:52, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

This can be done by adding [[Category:Fictional characters]] or some other sub-set of Category:Fictional to the bottom of the article. It should also usually be possible to just add the word 'fictional' somewhere in the first sentence. --CBDunkerson 00:30, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Assuming that you want some sort of chart showing the rise and fall of a stock price... wiki templates don't really have that sort of detailed graphing capability and your best bet might be to upload an image to display. If you are talking about something more like statistics for a stock (52 week high & low, P/E, EPS, et cetera) then it could be set up as an {{Infobox}}, but would need to be manually updated. --CBDunkerson 23:56, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Two templates

Mainly because I suck at finding out where to edit a template proper, I need two.

Well technically one but the infobox: one is for soapopera charcters. character, real name, age, spouse(s), family, first appearance, last appearance, status, occupation, portrayed by, etc. something like the charmed characters infobox just without the magic. maybe have a core cast one and a supporting cast one. possibly a family one. Look at me getting all greedy.

The other is a better one for the people infobox. person, birth name, dob, place of birth, date of death, place of death, cause of death, notable relatives, occupation, known for, etc.

Or whatever someone can come up with will be much appreciated.

NOAA template

Uh, the template could say something like "Information on this page was copied from a government source and is in the public domain" which pretty much what the NPS template is. It's just the NPS template has a picture of the NPS symbol, so it's slightly deceptive to use it, it makes it seem like it comes from the national parks system.

Proposed Move

Apololgies in advance if this already exists (of if there's a reason it doesn't) but I think a template for discussing a proposed move on the article's talk page (without going to Wikipedia: requested moves)would be extremely useful. Wikipedia requested moves is for controversial moves or moves that require assistance. I think something following the merge template ("It has been suggested that is article be moved to X. Sorry if I was unclear. Both existing templates mention that the discussion has been noted on "Wikipedia:requested moves". Wikipedia policy doesn't seem to demand that except in disputed cases. Sea Cadet Organisations

Please visit Sea Cadets (disambiguation) to view a growing list of Sea Cadet Corps and similar organisations. Many are still redlinked. We are not yet sure precisely how many individual nations and within those how many individual Sea Cadet Corps (and similar organisations) there are. A hard coded list on each page under "See also" is fast becoming unwieldy

Design

The ideal template will:

  • fill a master grid with the fact that a new page has the template attribute entered ion it
  • provide that master grid at the foot of any page including the template.
  • insert the page in a category (which may need creation) "Naval Cadet Orgnisations"

Parameters

Since there is often more than one Sea Cadet (or similar) organisation, plus some form of charity backing the corps, plus a supporter's group or more, per nation, I think two parameters have to be passed to the template:

  1. Nation
  2. Name of Article

Enhanced version

Optionally a third parameter could be considered: that of "Other" where the organisation is not itself a Corps. Default with this parameter absent would be that it is a corps

With this parameter present the listing in the grid could either be split into twin grids (one for a Corps and the other for "Associated Organisations") or be annnotated in a single grid to indicate that an Associated organisation is identifiable. I see that as "designer's discretion".

Probable input format

{{Naval-cadets|Nation|Article Name|(optional param for other)}}

The following on two different pages create the output grid below:

  1. {{Naval-cadets|United Kingdom|Sea Cadet Corps (United Kingdom))}
  2. {{Naval-cadets|International|International Sea Cadet Association|other)}

Where "other" is not null then it should really set the flag. Unless you know a better way, of course :)

Possible output Format

I am not a designer! That much should be immediately obvious! My thinking runs as follows:

Naval Cadet Organisations

Nation Naval Cadet Organisation Optional
United Kingdom Sea Cadet Corps (United Kingdom)  
International International Sea Cadet Association Associated org marker
Associated org marker: This is a governing body, or supporter's organisation
or similar organisation

I'm pretty sure it would need to be in smaller font than a default page font, and in colours to suit the various skins.

Unfortunately templates are not 'two directional' like that. The only 'self building lists' on Wikipedia are categories... but the pages in the category don't get shown when it is transcluded. However, once a list exists it is possible to then transclude it onto pages and automatically add those pages to categories. See {{Naval cadets}} for the start of an attempt to do so. The form 'naval cadets|short' excludes items the 'supporter organization' type items. Please comment or make updates there. --CBDunkerson 23:12, 21 May 2006 (UTC)


Looks really good so far. Good choice of colours for naval matters, too.
So, what you are saying is that I have to create a new category "Naval Cadets" (how do I do that?), and then the template you are making will be able to add that to the categories the page has already? Or have I got it wrong?
And I (or others) have to add new pages to the template manually? It's cool if so, I just need to know. And if that is the case I imagine the tempate needs an "Update this template" link on it?

Hi. Actually, any page you put {{naval cadets}} on will automatically be added to Category:Naval Cadet Organisations. However, you are correct about needing to update the list manually. strawman

In order to improve the quality of articles and reduce reversion wars, it would be useful to have a selection of inline templates with which to denote various logical fallacies. Line-based (not by section or article), use of these would help identify and resolve conflicts amicably, help save time in the Talk pages (thereby encouraging incremental improvemets), and help avert major page revisions. My sense is this is technically easy (the coding), but will require some thought for implementation. (Otherwise I'd do it myself; but I'm seeking guidance here from more seasoned Template builders.) As Wikipedia becomes more mature, measures to improve stability and quality are increasingly important. These inline templates may help achieve this.

For example, perhaps the most common form of rhetorical fallacy and abuse is the Straw man. To start with, could someone please create an inline template, {{strawman}}, with which to mark such fallacies? At a minimum, all it really has to do is insert the words [ StrawMan ] at the point of insertion in an Article. It could do more, of course. Just to brainstorm here: e.g., it could add the article to a (new) page to be called, perhaps, [Category:Articles with logical fallacies#Straw man] or [Category:Articles with straw man fallacies]. It could automatically make mention of the sentence in the Discussion page, along the lines of:

==Logic Improvements==
  • "User [#user] suggests there may be a Straw man fallacy in this sentence: "[#sentence]". Please help to clarify the logic."

Etc. We might start with {Straw man} as an experiment. If it works well, then here are a few other fallacy templates to add later: RedHerring, Ad hominem, Correlation, PostHoc, Affirming, Majority, Ignorantiam, Circular, Equivocation. Others can be added. There should be presumably be a "Template:Fallacies" page, which lists all such templates. Presumably these would go in [Category:Wikipedia maintenance templates] and/or [Category:Wikipedia cleanup templates].

I added an option for this as {{fix|strawman}}. I have some reservations about this proposed class of 'maintenance notes' though. Notes which request a citation for a particular point or suggest a merge do not include an inherent 'accusation' as these do. Also, if a user sees something as a straw man argument it would seem to make more sense to correct it than to tag it as such... the person who wrote it that way very likely considers it an accurate portrayal of the opposing view and is therefor not going to be able to make a more complete argument. Notice for users creating articles about themselves

A template would be nice for putting on users' talk pages when an article they have created is clearly about themselves (such as their user name matching the article's name), which has been marked for deletion as a non-notable bio. It could say something like "Your article at (wherever) has been marked for deletion, as the subject does not appear to have notabily required to have an article. Based on your username, it appears this article is about you. Author template

What ho! I think we need a generic template for authors. I propose the template have the following fields:

  • A photo of the author (centered), with
  • A space for a caption beneath that.
  • The date and location of the author's birth, and
  • The date and location of his death (if applicable.)
  • His dates active (i.e., from the time he publishes his first work to the time he publishes his last.)
  • His nationality.
  • Any pseudonyms used.
  • The genre of the main body of his work.
  • His most notable works.
  • Any philosophies, schools of thought, literary movements, etc. the author was a member of.
  • Any awards or honours bestowed upon him.

As you can see, I've rather a specific idea about how this should look. I'd program this myself if my html didn't suck so badly. Well, I think this would be a good idea, anyways. Anyone up for it? -- The Noble Age of Steam, 17:53, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Indent Port from WikiSource

This is source code for a template that will allow indenting from wikisource. I thought it would be useful from time to time, particularly if it can be used inline to pad out several text columns one would like to line up despite personal font size scaling settings.

It displayed so badly with nowiki's, I just acted boldly to edit-create it. It embedds a category that we apparently don't use, so someone should fix it if that is desired. See the talk at Template:Indent.

King George's Fields

Please look at List of King George V Playing Fields (Gloucestershire) as an example.

The page is simple page with a complex table, and asking editors to fill out a table is not always the easiest. The page is one of what will be many County pages for KGVF because there are 476 fields in the UK, so a "standard format" is desirable (which can change globally if future editors desire by changing the template.

I think we need three templates:

1) A page header, taking the County as the sole parameter, and creating the layout automatically down to the end "/tr" of the header rows of the table. It needs to fill the County into both the Page Intro and the Table Header, and wikilink it. It should also place the page into the category "King George's Field". It should not contain {{Incomplete-list}}, which is "editor's choice". Working title "kgvf-header"

2) A table row template, to be repeated multiple times containing as parameters each of the cells in the table row. working title "kgvf-row"

3) A page footer, handling the cite.php elements, including the explanation for unsure editors of how to use cite.php and the "==" level heading: "Notes". Working title "kgvf-footer"

I envisage a page to be made up simply of the following:

{{kgvf-header|County}}
{{kgvf-row|Param list}} (repeated as often as required)
{{kgvf-footer}}

The table is currently in HTML. I am much more familiar with HTML than wikimarkup. Since thsi will, please, be handled by the template, I have no feelings either way ion HTML vs Wikimarkup pipe syntax.

The cataloguing of KGV Fields has only just started, and the number of pages affected is currently 3. It would be great to get this templated before time has moved too far forward.

Because there are 7 parameters to pass to kgvf-row, one of which is itself a template {{KGVlist}} (with its own parameters, unless you fancy integrating the two), I imagine some defaults are useful to show where the editor has gone wrong. Unless you can think of a better way I suggest each column defaults to something like "col (number or name) data, n/a, or space required". While this will extend the table vertically most horribly, that in itself will act as a spur for a decent editor to do "something" instead of just being satisfied. I'm hoping to make this as "me proof" as possible without over-complicating it Fiddle Faddle 13:45, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I hope what is a minor hurdle remains. Special characters in URLS. http://www.crawleydownvillage.co.uk/amenities/?ID=23&Email=&Category=Amenities causes parameter 8 to be unrecognised. I suspect the "?" or the "&", possibly the "=". any way around this? I fear a number of external links will have this structure. This is a common problem with 'unnamed' parameters and URLs with '=' chars. Any time you have a '|' indicating a new parameter then the text between the '|' and an '=' is treated as a parameter name and everything to the right of the '=' to the next '|' or end of the template call is treated as the value. If there isn't any '=' sign then the entire section is treated as the value and the 'parameter name' is the next un-used number... that's what the kgvc-row template is trying to do, but the '=' in the URL mistakenly gets interpreted as a parameter setting '='... resulting in a parameter named "http://www.crawleydownvillage.co.uk/amenities/?ID" set equal to the value "23&Email=&Category=Amenities".
A workaround to this problem is to actually use the number as a parameter name; "8=http://www.crawleydownvillage.co.uk/amenities/?ID=23&Email=&Category=Amenities". Getting the '8=' in there assigns the full URL to a parameter explicitly named '8' rather than defaulting to '8' since it is the eighth un-named parameter. --CBDunkerson 21:26, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Not really. The only other option would be to redo the kgvc-row template to require a parameter name like '|external='. That would at least make the need for a parameter name explicit all the time rather than having to use the '|8=' trick for URLs with '=' signs in them. Update to protected template

There were requests to change "US" to both "U.S." and "American". I did the latter as that matches the similar Template:US-poet-stub. Also, {{editprotected}} is useful for drawing attention to such requests. --CBDunkerson 23:23, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
A simple request at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting would be the best way of getting this quickly fixed. There are many many stub templates, and most of the people patrolling them are far more likely to notice requests at WP:WSS itself rather than on the individual template talk pages. Help with an esoteric template

Let me start off by saying I began this template in order to help synchronize various writing system articles, and the template turned out to be much more of a chore than I anticipated. I initially copied it from Template:Infobox Language, thinking I could tweak it, but now I realize that the esoteric code is quite overwhelming to the noobesque computer geek such as myself. I need some help with it. I, as well as other members from Wikipedia:WikiProject Writing systems have outlined parameters on its talkpage and now these plans need to be implemented. Would any wikipedian experienced with esoteric code be willing to help me edit this template? It's a bit of a big deal, we'll probably need another template for the colors if we are to follow the code from Template:Infobox Language. Thank you!-- The ikiroid  23:10, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
