Template:Great Recession series

There should be a Sidebar templates called Great Recession series. I cannot believe this hasn't been created yet. A template like this would greatly help readers comprehend the entire event. Let's fix Template:Fix

Template:Fix has a problem: If the parameter "title" includes the " (quotation mark), then everything in the parameter after that quotation mark is omitted in the resulting tooltip. Maybe someone knows how to fix this?

Example:

Produces this:

[needs copy edit]

Template for pages moved to draft space by AfD

I would like a template to place on the top of pages that have been moved from article space to draft space pursuant to an AfD, indicating this status, and that the page should not be moved back to mainspace unless concerns raised in the AfD are addressed. See, e.g., the ad hoc info templates that I have placed on Draft:Claire Cliteur, and Draft:PayTabs. I would like something a bit more administrative looking, with a parameter referencing the relevant AfD discussion.

BD2412 - I've created Template:AfD-userfied for you. If you can think of a category where former articles are placed, add it to the "all" parameter. I've also set the "type" parameter to "delete", but it may be more appropriate to use "notice". Mr rnddude (talk) 18:59, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
Very nice. I will test it out on the existing referenced articles. bd2412 T 19:11, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

I would like a template for medal table (example 2018 Asian Games medal table) so the total number of medal could be computed automatically. Currently Infobox country at games has this feature. Hddty. (talk) 05:01, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

@Hddty.: I like this idea. Think it might be a good candidate for a module... --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:40, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
In progress this is going to take me a few days but I hope to have a proof of concept done mid week. :-) --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:16, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
@Hddty.: can you take a look at Medals table and let me know what you think? Still working out a few kinks... But would love some feedback! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:36, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
@Zackmann08: Cool! I didn't expect the column would be merged if the NOC has the same rank. My suggestion is, since the ranks are automatically generated based on medal, maybe better to use IOC codes to distinguish the parameter instead of number (example goldCHN, thus we don't need nation1). Sometimes in the main article we only display top 10 NOC + "Remaining NOCs" by transclusion (see 2016 Summer Olympics#Medal table, sometimes not, see 2018 Winter Olympics#Medal table) is this template able to do this? Also NOCs total number needs to be displayed in the bottom of the table. Hddty. (talk) 02:33, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
@Hddty.: well much of the credit goes to Frietjes for her assistance! The use of the IOC codes is an interesting idea... Not sure whether it is practical to implement that in a module. @Frietjes: do you have any thoughts? I'm happy to try to implement it, but I'm curious what you think. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 03:46, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
IOC codes should be possible by calling Module:Country alias. I would suggest |gold_CHN= or |goldCHN= with the ability to override the display name with |nameCHN= or |name_CHN=, but if the name parameter isn't there, then it looks up the name from the 3 letter abbreviation using Module:Country alias. the other interesting feature with 2016 Summer Olympics medal table is the ability to show the full table on 2016 Summer Olympics medal table but only part of the table on 2016 Summer Olympics#Medal table. there are a few ways we could accomplish this, but the method used by Template:2004–05 FA Premier League table is probably the most obvious (see the show_limit parameter and 2004–05 Chelsea F.C. season#League table). Frietjes (talk) 13:27, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

@Frietjes: I like it! You really have a knack for this stuff. Greatly appreciate your counsel here. @Hddty.: I'm going to play around with the above idea and see what I can come up with. Give me a day or two. :-) --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:06, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

@Frietjes and Hddty.: I'm moving this conversation to Template talk:Medals table#Initial creation so that it will be preserved with the template itself. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:41, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello! Could somebody make a template similar to Help:Table/example row template, but for addition of columns?

Like this:

Year A. B. C.
I. 2 3 4
II. 4 6 8
III. 8 12 16
Total ΣA ΣB ΣC

Thank you in advance! --Pegy22 (talk) 18:53, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

@Pegy22: that isn't really a template issue.. That is just documentation. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:26, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
Isn't this a template? Help:table/example row template
<includeonly>|-
|{}||{}||{{#expr:{}/{}}}</includeonly><noinclude>documentation</noinclude>

Then how can I transcribe it to work with columns? --Pegy22 (talk) 19:57, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

@Pegy22: so this is a weird case... Technically any page can be a template. That is to say that you can include any page within another. In the context of this page (requested templates) we are focused on pages in the Template namespace. The example you found is just a bit of code that is reused on multiple help pages. Lets take this conversation to your talk page? I'm happy to try to help you out. I shall leave you a message in a moment. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:37, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Move notice template

I'm proposing a new template, Move notice, which would operate analogously to Afd notice and be used to notify users (or WikiProjects) about a proposed page move. I have a mockup in my sandbox here. The transcluded /doc page should suffice for meeting WP:RT requirements about what the template should do. There are also four test cases available, the first one is here. All the test cases "pass" at the moment; perhaps more of them should be added. There's also one pending item in my ToDo list on the Talk page, which will probably break my tests if I try to implement it.

I'm not a very experienced template writer, and quite shaky with safesubst which I just copied out of the Afd notice template, so that bears looking at, and the whole template needs a once-over. This grew out of a real-world need, where I found I was pasting the same boilerplate on various user pages and WikiProjects, and decided it needed a better solution than that, and this is the result. Mathglot (talk) 09:16, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Mathglot, I don't have much experience with templates, but I think it would be helpful to have a parameter/input to allow someone to override the default discussion location. Since sometimes people start discussions in the wrong place, or a proposed move comes out of an existing in progress discussion. zchrykng (talk) 00:04, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
Zchrykng, I'm a newbie at templates, but adding that param is easy enough to do; I'll put it on my list. Thanks for the suggestion. If you have more, please add them directly to the talk page of the template as well, or at least add a link there to here or wherever. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 00:07, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
Will do! zchrykng (talk) 00:24, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
@Mathglot and Zchrykng: Do you agree also with my suggestions at User talk:Mathglot/sandbox/Templates/Template:move notice#Move notice about also including a parameter for primary topics (specifically) and naming (specifically) don't worry about the precise text as that can be worked on, the main thing is having the parameters. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:11, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Rfd should show required parameter

If I enter Rfd on a page, it tells me to Subst: it, and shows

Error: No content was provided. The original text of the page (the #REDIRECT line and any templates) must be placed inside of the content parameter.

However, it is not obvious to all editors that this means we have to add |content=.

It would be helpful if the module could be amended to explain clearly the specific code required. At present, an editor unfamiliar with the template has to open it in a separate window to see what is required. – Fayenatic London 11:57, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

The Wall tracks template

Hello. I propose that we have a template for tracks on the Pink Floyd album The Wall. Every song on The Wall seems to have the song immediately before it and immediately after it on the article it can get slightly confusing and jumbled up. Case in point Waiting for the Worms. In addition the album in question is a concept album that is a story so much so that they made Pink Floyd – The Wall out of it, so having the next track so you could follow the plot would be a welcome and useful addition to the wiki page of every song. I feel it would be a helpful addition to every song with a Wikipedia page (incidentally all of them) as it would make the whole thing a lot more understandable and accessible. If this template is accepted then I propose it will look pretty much the same as every other album tracks template there is at the minute and I feel this will be more necessary then, say, A Night at the Opera tracks. Thank you and I hope you consider my proposal and get back soon.

A quote template acting like wayback.

what the template should look like?

Similar to wayback that acts as a separate supplementation to the reference templates such as cite journal, cite web and so on.

what it should do?

Allow editors to quote different content from the same source.

If it's convenient to you such a great team, please let me know when the template is built. Thanks! 🙏

Templates based on Wikidata external identifiers

Hi All, I was thinking that it would be great to have a template which collects only those external IDs about a person/topic which have additional, textual information, not only a list of things or data. So something similar to Template:Taxonbar but for example only containing biography sites for a person Oxford Dictionary of National Biography ID (P1415), Dictionary of Canadian Biography ID (P2753), Austrian Biographical Encyclopedia ID (P6194) or encyclopedias for a topic Handbook of Texas ID (P6015), Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy ID (P3123). This would probably need properly tagging these sites on Wikidata. I think this would be an great use of Wikidata and also it is also an important aspect of Wikipedia to collect and point out to the readers these trustworthy sources. What do you think? --Adam Harangozó (talk) 14:00, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

A "R Rated" Content Template

There are times when I come across something on Wikipedia, like a paragraph describing a brutal murder, or a description of an execution that was extreme. Knowing that some small children use Wikipedia, and that some people might not want to read about this kind of stuff, I think we should have a template that reads something like this: "Some content in this article may be considered inappropriate or disturbing to some users. Discretion Advised." You could put this at the top of an article or section and people would be warned that there is some extreme content there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KingWither (talkcontribs) 15:02, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

I think this module should basically do the same as the parser function anchorencode, so that it doesn't have to be necessary to use encoded characters such as G%C3%BCnter. It should either be implemented in Module:Anchor or have its own module page.

EU trademark template

I think it would be beneficial to have a template for EU trademarks. Currently such a template doesn't seem to exist, or I could not find it. None is listed in Category:Europe law templates or any of the sub-categories.
There exists one for US trademarks at Template:US trademark.

Lots of articles use the US version, but not everything does get trademarked for the US. 2A04:4540:904:100:11A9:8514:5183:E6DA (talk) 11:01, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Template:Cite Belgian act

The French Template for this is not helpful in my opinion, because it requires you to research the "dossier number". My template already produces a helpful link if you just know the date of the law (year + month + day) and does not require you to make a more detailed research. My template is based on the European Legislation Identifier (ELI) standard; while the French Belgian law template creates some strange proprietary, "handmade" links which are not based on any standard.

Parameters in the URL

The following structure definition has been taken from http://www.ejustice.just.fgov.be/eli/

The URL structure is http://www.ejustice.just.fgov.be/eli/$LAWTYPE/$YYYY/$MM/$DD/$NUMAC/justel#$LOC_URL ; in which:

  • $LAWTYPE is the document type, possible values are presented in the following. The language of the presented documents is also determined by this variable; the first value in the following is always leading to a Dutch version; the second value in the following leading to a French version.
    • "GRONDWET" or "CONSTITUTION", if constitutional act.
    • "WET" or "LOI", if federal law.
    • "DECREET" or "DECRET", if regional or community decree of primary legislation
    • "ORDONNANTIE" or "ORDONNANCE", if regional law from Brussel
    • "BESLUIT" or "ARRETE", if decree of secondary legislation by king, regional or federal governments / ministers
  • $YYYY is the year of resolution (with 4 digits).
  • $MM is the numeric month of resolution (with 2 digits).
  • $DD is the day of resolution (with 2 digits).
  • $NUMAC is a unique identification number for the law with 10 digits; in this case the NUMAC-number. The NUMAC number always starts with the year of resolution (4 digits). Sometimes, the following 4 digits are the month (MM) and day (DD) of the enactment; but this is not always the case (see e.g. NUMAC-number 1989000145: http://www.ejustice.just.fgov.be/eli/wet/1989/03/23/1989000145/justel).
  • "justel" is an option to specify how the act should be published. In our case, we should always choose "JUSTEL" (we could also choose "STAATSBLAD" or "MONITEUR" to view non-interactive and non-consolidated versions of laws; but this is not necessary in our case).
  • $LOC_URL is the location inside a law, made url-friendly. Possible values are e.g.:
    • "Art.1" if article 1
    • "Art.43bis" if article 43bis

Parameters used in this template

The Template cite Belgian act should have the following parameters in my opinion:

  • lang_version: The requested language version of the law.
    • If lang_version has the value "French"/"fr"/"f"; the reference should only include a link to the French version of the act and Template:cite act will be used in the following; in which the language parameter is set to French.
    • If lang_version has the value "Dutch"/"nl"/"n"; the reference should only include a link to the Dutch version of the act and Template:cite act will be used in the following; in which the language parameter is set to Dutch.
    • If lang_version stays empty, is not specified or has the value "both"; the reference should include links to both language versions (Dutch and French) of the act; so two links. This parameter is therefore optional. In this case, Template:cite act should there not be used; because it does not allow multiple links.
  • type_input: The law type; in English, French or Dutch. Different terms for the same law type exist; so we have to do some processing; which gives us the unique $type_internal variable (only used internally in this template). This parameter is required.
    • If type_input has the value "constitution"/"CONSTITUTION"/"Grondwet"/"GRONDWET"/"constitutional act"; then $type_internal should have the value "constitution"
    • If type_input has the value "WET"/"wet"/"LOI"/"loi"/"federal law"/"law"/"LAW"; then $type_internal should have the value "federal law".
    • If type_input has the value "decreet"/"DECREET"/"decret"/"DECRET"/"decree"/"regional law"; then $type_internal should have the value "decree of type 1"
    • If type_input has the value "ORDONNANTIE"/"Ordonnantie"/"ORDONNANCE"/"Ordonnance"/"Brussel law"/"Brussel act"/"order"/"Brussel order"; then $type_internal should have the value "order of the Brussel region".
    • If type_input has the value "ARRETE"/"arrete"/"arrêté royaux"/"Arrêté Royaux"/"royal decree"/"Royal Decree"/"ROYAL DECREE"/"BESLUIT"/"besluit"/"arrêté ministériel"/"koninklijke besluit"/"arrêté régional"/"besluit regionale"/"arrêté communautaire"/"besluit communautaire"; then $type_internal should have the value "decree of type 2".
  • date: The full date of enactment / promulgation of the act. This parameter is required.
  • numac: The full NUMAC number of the law. This parameter is strongly recommended, but not required ; because you can usually find a law by its date of enactment - parliaments do not enact more than let's say tens law on the same day. This parameter can be used the same way as the index parameter in Template:cite act.
  • title: The title of the law. This parameter is optional. It should be in the same language as lang_version to be consistent; but this is not verified.
  • loc: The location inside the law.

Processing inside the template

  • Before we can use the location description in the URL; we have to do some processing. Let's do the processing in regexp code with sed:
    $LOC_URL=$(echo $loc | sed -r 's/(Article|article|Art\.|art\.)(\s)([0-9]{1,5})(bis|ter|quater|quinquies|sexies|septies|octies|novies|).*/Art.\3\4/g' )
  • From the date; we extract the following variables (only used for the URL). I am not very fluent with wikipedia templates for dates (e.g. Template:MONTHNUMBER; please give your advice how to use them.
    • the year number: YYYY
    • the month number: MM
    • the day number: DD .

Presentation

In an article, the law citation could be presented as follows:

  • If $LOC is empty:
"Belgian $TYPE No. $numac of $YYYY/$MM/$DD ".
  • If $LOC is not empty:
"Belgian $TYPE No. $numac of $YYYY/$MM/$DD, $LOC".

Additionally, we could provide both language versions:

"Belgian $TYPE of $YYYY/$MM/$DD No. $numac; available [ in Dutch] and [ in French].

We could just use the cite-act-Template for presentation:

I am working on more detailed examples. C-Kobold (talk) 08:40, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Citation parameter

Hello, The template citation in conjunction with sfn could use an additional parameter to bypass the auxilliary set of references. Please see User talk:NorthPark1417/sandbox - NorthPark1417 (talk) 06:13, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Update on citation talk page. - NorthPark1417 (talk) 14:03, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Citation Needs Update

Though there is a template for marking an entire article or section as needing citation updates, but there is also a need for a template to identify a specific citation that needs an update.

For example, in section Numerical weather prediction#Ensemble the citation to Weickmann, Klaus; Jeff Whitaker; Andres Roubicek; Catherine Smith (2001-12-01). "The Use of Ensemble Forecasts to Produce Improved Medium Range (3–15 days) Weather Forecasts". Climate Diagnostics Center, the link, http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/spotlight/12012001/ actually addresses Susan Bacon, "Manila Galleon Voyages". This is probably a ESRL:PSD URL assignment error, none-the-less, it is an incorrect URL for the named article. I searched for that article and could not find it. I tagged the citation with dead link which is not truly the case.

A template of a similar form such as needs update or update needed modeled after dead link is desirable.

Tracks for the Pink Floyd album, The Wall

It is a rock opera so individual articles often reference other songs and I believe it would be beneficial to have a list of all the song at the start of each article.

Relationship for use in Person Infoboxes

A possible replacement for Template:Marriage (for use in Person Infoboxes) with a Relationship one, that will cover both marriages and partners; this would allow unique situations to be addressed, such as a person with multiple relationship types over their life, notable mistresses, notable separations that haven't ended in divorce, etc. Both the de jure and the de facto relationship(s) and status(es) would be able to be addressed within one template. The Person Infoboxes could also be adjusted to reflect this, instead of a separate template. Consensus would, of course, need to be obtained before eliminating the marriage or partner parameters/templates.

8TeamBracket-Tennis3-Byes, 8TeamBracket-Tennis5-Byes, 8TeamBracket-Tennis35-Byes

The first is best of 3 in every round, the second best of 5, and the third best of 3 in all rounds except the final which is best of 5. "Byes" indicates that byes in the first round are not shown if no team is given. There already exists 8TeamBracket-Tennis355-Byes, so it hopefully shouldn't be too difficult to transform into the above. For reference, here are compact versions with byes:

And non-compact versions without byes:

@Trialpears: Fantastic! Thanks. Yes I agree, having a single template for each format (3, 5, 335 etc.) but with parameters such as show_byes= and is_compact= would make things a lot simpler. Calbow (talk) 05:24, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

A "User wants to relocate to" template

I think that this template should be created because sometimes you want to relocate to somewhere in real life and on your user page you want to show where you are relocating to. The type of template will have a feature to add multiple places for your relocation in real life. After the first place has been put on the template it will show up as "This user wants to relocate to (Insert location name here)" For the ones after the first one, they will show up as "then to (insert location name here)". Metric Supporter 89 (talk) 13:36, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

The use case for this would be absolutely minimal. In the unlikely event that anyone really feels the need to tell us their entire life plans, why can they not just type "I plan to move to Foo and after that to Bar"? ‑ Iridescent 21:58, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
uir has for "This user wishes to be in ...". PrimeHunter (talk) 20:24, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
@PrimeHunter I believe what's being requested is a template that will output the text "This user wants to relocate to Detroit, then to Dresden, Dublin and Dover" from . ‑ Iridescent 06:56, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
Yes, but how many people would list more than one place? I guess a userbox is wanted and uir comes with many features like showing a flag for the place. A new option number could be requested for "wants to relocate to" instead of 83 for "wishes to be in". @MetricSupporter89: If you want to list multiple places then you can call Userbox directly with a custom text. I made an example call below. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:43, 18 April 2019 (UTC)
This user wants to relocate to Detroit, then to Dresden.
@MetricSupporter89: Wikipedia talk:Userboxes/Ideas might be a better place for this request. —andrybak (talk) 11:23, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Efs start5

Hello. I've been creating articles about clubs' seasons in the Egyptian Premier League since the 2018–19 season and decided to use Efs start4 to show statistics about the club's players. However, since the season is closing to end, I've noticed that the Updated function cannot be removed since it's part of the template unlike the rest, which will be something odd to include in an article about a season that ended.

So I was thinking about creating something like Efs start5? It will be literally the same but without the |updated= parameter so it can be used on articles about seasons that ended, while other users can still use Efs start4. I was going to create that template by myself but decided to discuss it here first. Thanks.

Template maintainers productivity

Hi,

This is not exactly a request for a template, but I couldn't find a better page for asking this. There's Wikipedia:Templates for discussion, but it's mostly for discussion about deleting particular templates, and this is a more general question. If there is a better page for this, please point me there. Thanks for understanding.

I'll be participating in the Wikimedia Technical Conference in Atlanta in November. One of the things that will be discussed there is "Developer productivity for onwiki tooling". Templates and modules are included in "onwiki tooling".

So I have a question for template and module developers and maintainers: What can make you more productive? What can make template and module development more convenient? Be wild, and tell me all your pain points, big and small, minor nitpicks and strategic proposals.

Thanks! --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:37, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

I do a lot of template mergers and in a lot of these cases more powerful control of what is transcluded and what is substituted would be beneficial. Something like <substonly> and <transonly> tags would be optimal. --Trialpears (talk) 09:57, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Reinstate Type parameter in CFD

The functions of template:Cfd / template:Cfd full were moved into Module:Cfd. It does not currently recognise the "type" parameter which is documented at WP:CFD and Template:Cfd/doc#Optional parameter. This is intended for non-standard outcomes, such as "reinstatement" which I have just tried to use at Category:Categories by parameter. – Fayenatic London 11:57, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Just delete Module:Cfd entirely -- it's an unnecessary Lua module that could be implemented in Wikitext -- and the very existence of this post validates my crusade against such modules. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. The module is also used by Cfr, Cfm and cfl so I don't want to be hasty. (There is also Cfm-double which I have never come across before, but likewise calls the module via Cfm full; and cfs which does not, still using cfd all.)
The parameter "type" is passed from Cfd to Cfd full but the latter ignores it. The module takes an unnamed single-letter parameter from the calling templates and calls it "type".
How about using a new parameter name in Cfd instead of "type", e.g. "special=", and passing this to the module? – Fayenatic London 09:52, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
@Fayenatic london: The actual reason I reverted my edits was not some technical fault but my own unsureness: what should happen to the hidden instructions to admins (which didn't exist prior to the module creation) for such nominations? * Pppery * it has begun... 00:07, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
@Pppery: "hidden instructions" – are you referring to the module documentation? I don't think those notes are instructions for admins, but just doc for module maintenance. The module should implement what is openly documented on the prime templates e.g. Cfd. – Fayenatic London 23:43, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
@Fayenatic london: No, I was referring to the text "Administrators: If this category is empty, and all incoming links have been cleaned up, click here to delete.", which is hidden for me as a non-admin, in my comment above. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:50, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
@Pppery: Ah, thank you. Just leave that with the word "delete", and the reason as "This category has been deleted...", and the category as "Categories for deletion", per the type "d". If the category does end up being deleted manually, the admin can edit that reason to whatever is appropriate for the deletion log entry. – Fayenatic London 08:09, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Suggestion for ALLCAPS template

I have encountered a few users that write messages in ALL CAPS when they want to put emphasis while I am patrolling. For that, I have used personal messages, but I think there may be a need for templates uw-allcaps1 and uw-allcaps2 that may be necessary. The templates I am proposing may have the wording something like this:

  • Level 1: "Hello BASEPAGENAME and welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed you left a message in ALL CAPS, which is considered shouting. This may not be your intent, but check your caps lock key before you continue editing. If you need to emphasize text, you can use Bold text or Italics text or <u>Underlined text</u>. Thank you."
  • Level 2: "Please refrain from leaving messages in ALL CAPS as it is considered shouting and uncivil. If you need to emphasize text, you can use Bold text or Italics text or <u>Underlined text</u>. Thank you."
  • Level 3 and higher: use uw-npa3 and uw-npa4.

Frame missing around some nav boxes

Template:BooksInCentury has no frame outline. Is this because of the class="hlist"?

Cf. class="toc" which reinstated a missing frame at e.g. Special:diff/837119371. (I copied that without understanding how it worked, probably from user:TheDJ using it at [4].) – Fayenatic London 10:11, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

It's nothing to do with hlist (which rearranges lists to be horizontal instead of vertical), it's because there is neither explicit styling to draw a border nor a class that does the same: by default, borders are absent unless you provide an instruction that adds them. The toc class has such an instruction, being the border: 1px solid #a2a9b1; declaration.
BTW this is not a request for a new template, it's more of a WP:VPT matter. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:54, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
Thank you, Redrose64. I tried that and it worked. Then, looking to see if other templates also needed it, I stumbled across class ="toc hlist", which includes the border already.[5] As it happens, this class also reduces the vertical space between the lines of content, but that's fine.   DoneFayenatic London 16:39, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

"help me" and "help me-helped" templates for the french wikipedia ?

Wouldn't it make sense to have the help me and help me-helped templates also developed for the french wikipedia? I write in both (and get my ass kicked in both :( ). But I do understand what templates are about and what they are for and I do use them, idem so for categories. So I was in the french wikipedia and noticed that an article was missing which - as a non-native french speaker - I couldn't write just because I don't have enough feeling with the vocabulary necessary for the article. So I wanted to add the template "help me", but then found that code is not understood. I tried what could be the french equivalent "aidez moi" - but that didn't work either. Then I found out they keep for every year a list with articles that are requested. Only there is no page for 2020; the last time such a page was created was in 2019 but over the whole year, there were no requests posted. So it's page just explaining what it is for; have a look for yourself; here's the link to the page: fr:Discussion Wikipédia:Le Bistro/Articles à créer en 2019#Modèle:Help me and Modèle:Help me-helped

Could it be that our french speaking wikipedian friends need some help? Looking forward --SvenAERTS (talk) 18:31, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

@SvenAERTS: The French Wikipedia already has an equivalent for the first of these, it is fr:Modèle:SOS. I found this very easily, by going to our template help me and looking in the left margin for the word "Français". --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 12:57, 26 November 2019 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Ah yes - I mean - ah oui! Well found. I didn't notice/know clicking the languages makes one jump the equivalent article in another language! Thx - I'm going to teach that to others ! :) --SvenAERTS (talk) 02:58, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
@Redrose64: So, should we remove this paragraph or move it to faq page or so? --SvenAERTS (talk) 12:03, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
We do not remove threads once somebody (in this case me) has responded. It's not frequently asked, so FAQ is irrelevant - furthermore, FAQ pages are not for holding discussions, they are where both question and answer are added together, see for example WP:FAQ. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:25, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

An "expand multiple languages" template, analogous to Template:Multiple issues

Another request from me, this time about the Template:Expand language templates. I'd like to know if anyone has considered making a template that condenses multiple of these into one box (with the same appearance as the regular "expand language" box) for the sake of compactness, since I've found that some of these articles have a lot of different language editions, and it would be nice to specify which ones have the most useful info without having to clutter the page with multiple boxes. See for example this revision of Pedro Linares and this revision of Pastorela. I would normally do this using the Template:Expand language on its own, but that is apparently advised against and also has the disadvantages of A. not specifying which languages to look at and B. not adding the article to the relevant maintenance categories. Ionmars10 (talk) 22:31, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Ionmars10, how about adding support for multiple languages in one template? This would change the initial sentance to something like "This article may be expanded with text translated from the corresponding article in French, Italian and German" wikilinking the languages instead of "corresponding article". ‑‑Trialpears (talk) 23:03, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Trialpears, yeah that's pretty much what I meant in my original message; I apologize if it wasn't clear initially. Ionmars10 (talk) 23:05, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

Proposal for "this category contains x% of all articles" for maintenance categories

User:Deacon Vorbis suggested on Discord to turn the blue box shown at the bottom here into a template for other large maintenance categories. UK Supreme Court Judgements template

So if you look at a UK Supreme Court Judgements page, the source is giant. Unlike with the US Supreme Court, which has a nice table template Template:SCOTUSTable and corresponding row template Template:SCOTUSRow, this one isn't standardized so well, and is somewhat of a nightmare to edit. If it had a template for this, it would be much easier to apply changes to it throughout the 10 or so large pages it is used on. However, I am not good enough at templates to make one for it (I have only really made one original template that is at all complex, as seen at [6]) so could someone else try to figure this out? Thanks! DemonDays64 (talk) 16:18, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the ping, Trialpears.
@Miraclepine: Please read the background to Template:AllIrelandByCountyCatNav at WP:IECATNAVP, especially the section §Irish_Counties. As I noted there, the Irish template was possible only because "Ireland has a had broadly stable set of 32 counties for over 400 years". Unless there is a consistent set of subdivisions, the automated approach doesn't work.
That stability doesn't apply to, for example, counties in the island of Britain or to US states (whose map is stable only since the early 20th century).
The Canadian provinces map has been stable enough to allow me to create CanadaByProvinceCatNav, and there may be other sets of subdivisions which are also stable enough to allow the same approach.
In the case of Japan, Prefectures of Japan#Former_prefectures seems to me to say that the Japanese set as been stable only since 1943. That seems to me to make it impossible to have a single parameterless navbox for all periods, unless a whole bunch of complex conditionality was coded in. That would make it something very different to what I did for Ireland. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:55, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

AntiCompositeNumber, thanks. Would it be difficult/advisable to display the URL so the domain name is invalid, for example "." replaced with " ". -- GreenC 20:24, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
What the template displays is very problematic because some usurped URLs lead to scams or outright malware. We should not display a link or domain name that a naive reader might try copy/pasting to their browser. Johnuniq (talk) 22:27, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
Now has "." converted to "-" ..
..it won't stop a determined user but should reduce casual copy-paste. Three levels of protection: the "usurped!" notice, nowiki/code, and modified URL. We still maintain archive URLs which contain the source URL, and in |url= of CS1|2 templates with |url-status=usurped enabled. -- GreenC 04:26, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Tweak code of PresRow so that it doesn't look as ugly when substituted

PresRow is used in conjunction with PresHead and PresFoot to display the historical United States presidential election results of a given place. For example,

Gives

United States presidential election results for Anyville, Illinois
Year Republican Democratic Third party
No.  % No.  % No.  %
2016 23,444 89.37% 2,456 9.36% 333 1.27%
2012 333,333 93.72% 22,222 6.25% 123 0.03%

Due to template limits, this template has to be substituted at times. Unfortunately, the above code when substituted provides this code (open the edit tab to see):

United States presidential election results for Anyville, Illinois
Year Republican Democratic Third party
2016 23,444, 89.37% 2,456, 9.36% 333, 1.27%

Which looks messy in the edit tab. I am unfortunately not an expert in recursive substitution, so could someone please tweak the code, removing the comments or using safesubst, for example, to make the substituted code look like normal wikitable code. Much thanks!

  • @Pppery: There are issues with the third-party percentage calculation, see Cook County, Illinois#Politics. Thanks! – John M Wolfson (talkcontribs) 23:04, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
      Fixed (it was a one-character typo). * Pppery * it has begun... 23:11, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
  • I have tested both subst: and safesubst: for all three winner scenarios on my sandbox and found them to my satisfaction. If not an imposition, there are nowiki tags surrounding the figures for non-winning parties (which I believe is due to the switch, but I don't know how to fix it), but it is otherwise just what I was looking for. Thanks! – John M Wolfson (talkcontribs) 23:21, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
Those nowiki tags have always been in the template. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:24, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
I know, and I think that the template would break without them, so it's not a big deal. Have a nice day! :) – John M Wolfson (talkcontribs) 23:26, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
The <nowiki /> tags are being used as placeholders for the positions where three apostrophes aren't being used. I suspect that they can safely be removed from the template code. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 12:16, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Not code then code

I have a template I have attempted to make called Not code then code

The gist is this - there is one parameter named {code}. If I feed it a cite template, for example, , I want the output to be:

Elk, Anne (November 16, 1972). Anne Elk's Theory on Brontosauruses. cite book: Invalid |ref=harv (help)

So, the output of {code}, and then the input of that {code} again between <code> </code> tags on the next line down. I would like this to be able to handle inputting whole other templates, in particular cite templates. This is intended for my own use to be able to input citations into a list version ready to copy and paste that I can modify without having to alter a normal version and a <code> </code> version separately.

However, I keep end up getting either the {code} parameter name as my output, or getting the output of a cite template as code, rather than the input - not what I want! I think this has something to do with #tag: but I can't figure it out.

Apologies if this is a stupid question - despite being on Wikipedia for over a year now I am still a complete template noob. Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Griceylipper (talk) 02:00, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Griceylipper, you're probably looking for Template:Demo or Template:Tbullet. For example, using demo:

Elk, Anne (November 16, 1972). Anne Elk's Theory on Brontosauruses. cite book: Invalid |ref=harv (help)
Hope this helps. —andrybak (talk) 06:52, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
That does the trick! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Griceylipper (talk) 09:53, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Recently, I closed a CFD regarding a category that's used by Template:M as a rename from Category:M_? to Category:Articles using unknown earthquake magnitude scales. However, after the move and delete process, the original M ? category is still showing up on certain articles [7] and I have a feeling that it has to do with Template:M. Could someone with template expertise take a look at this? bibliomaniac15 02:53, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Done @Bibliomaniac15: it should be fixed now. TheTVExpert (talk) 14:14, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
Many thanks! bibliomaniac15 17:53, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Automatic coloring of election results by county without requiring an image

would produce

I doubt that this is possible, as it appears to require the manipulation of SVG source code via Lua, and even if it is its full implementation would be well out of my wheelhouse. Having said that, here's a proposed pseudocode algorithm of how it would work for anyone interested to try:
This would work if and only if Lua has the capability of directly accessing, modifying, and exporting SVG source code, which I doubt is the case. Again, if this is doable this would be quite frankly epic and I'd be more than happy in helping with its implementation (uploading base maps, etc.). This has inspired me to do the less ambitious goal of creating templates to standardize party results by vote percentage, Party results shading, and its subpages such as .

In terms of output capabilities, Lua can't do anything that Wikitext can't, so outputting a SVG from Lua is definitely impossible. I'm not sure about input, but I'd be surprised if if were possible. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:27, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
We are able to create chessboards and music scores. Neither one uses images. Is there a way to do that for coloring counties? HotdogPi 13:04, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Both of those work by taking predefined shapes and superimposing them upon a rectangular grid. The shapes already have their colours set: File:Chess klt45.svg is an image that is distinct from File:Chess kdt45.svg. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:03, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
