#HerNaturalHistory - Editing Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons
Help us enhance information in Wikipedia about women in natural history during our Wikipedia Editing Workshop on 13 March in celebration of Women’s History Month!

The LuEsther T. Mertz Library of the New York Botanical Garden welcomes students and Wikipedia editors to participate in an Edit-a-thon focused on creating and enhancing information in Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons related to the theme of Women in Natural History. This edit-a-thon is part of the #HerNaturalHistory campaign of the Biodiversity Heritage Library is co-sponsored by Wikimedia NYC.

The participants affiliated with this initiative will not make any edits that would not be beneficial to the goals of Wikipedia.   • Participants: Open to all! However, editing Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons is a little different than editing Wikipedia. This event will be most useful for those who have edited Wikipedia already and are very comfortable using computers.

What is Wikidata? edit

  • Wikidata is a free and open knowledge base that can be read and edited by both humans and machines.
  • Wikidata acts as central storage for the structured data of its Wikimedia sister projects including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, and others.
  • Wikidata also provides support to many other sites and services beyond just Wikimedia projects! The content of Wikidata is available under a free license, exported using standard formats, and can be interlinked to other open data sets on the linked data web.

What is Wikimedia Commons? edit

  • Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository making available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content (images, sound and video clips) to everyone, in their own language. It acts as a common repository for the various projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, but you do not need to belong to one of those projects to use media hosted here. The repository is created and maintained not by paid archivists, but by volunteers. The scope of Commons is set out on the project scope pages.

Training edit

A one hour training session will be offered at the start of this event covering introductory topics.

Editing Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons is a little different than editing Wikipedia. It is advised that you have some experience editing Wikipedia already and be very comfortable using a computer.

  • This workshop follows a non-Wiki workshop on 3/12 concerned with adding plant name information to plates on Flickr.

Instructions

  1. Attendees will create and/or log into a Flickr account.
  2. Attendees will choose an asset to edit using a spreadsheet provided.
  3. Attendees will add the tag "nybgtagging" to the asset.
  4. Attendees will add taxonomy:binomial and taxonomy:common tags.

How should I tag my photos for EOL use?

For most photos, all you need to do is create a binomial tag with the genus and species name like this: taxonomy:binomial="Genus species"

Example: taxonomy:binomial="Panthera tigris"

Note that you need to have quotes in your binomial machine tag to keep it from breaking apart at the space between the genus and species name.

Tags are not case sensitive, i.e., either taxonomy:binomial="PANTHERA TIGRIS" or taxonomy:binomial="panthera tigris" will work just as well. You can also put the quotes around the entire tag instead of the taxon name, i.e., "taxonomy:binomial=panthera tigris" will also work.

  • Check your spelling! You may wish to do this through Google or Tropicos.
  • It can be helpful to have the book in BHL open in in another window - sometimes the caption text is available as OCR.

Other Possible Tasks

  • Add Wikidata information for:
    • illustrator:wikidata=Qxxx
    • engraver:wikidata=Qxxx
    • species:wikidata=Qxxxx

Wikimedia Commons edit

  • The more metadata in Wikimedia Commons, the more powerful the resource is and the more accessible the content is. For this task, attendees will adding missing date, authorship, and taxonomic information to Wikimedia Commons images.
  • This is the BHL maintenance category on Commons. (Note that this includes assets that are not JUST from the #HerNaturalHistory photo set.)

Instructions

  1. Attendees will create and/or log into a Wikimedia Commons account.
  2. Attendees will choose an asset to edit from the categories provided.
  3. Attendees will add date information if missing.
    • To get the date, click on the link in the asset that takes you to BHL. BHL will have the date.
  1. Attendees will add author information if missing.
    • To get the author, click on the link in the asset that takes you to BHL. BHL may have the data.
    • Add the author using the following template: {{Creator:NAME}}
    • Use: {{Creator: Anonymous}} if no author is given.
  1. Attendees will add taxonomic information

  1. Attendees will create and/or log into a Wikimedia Commons account.
  2. Attendees will create and/or log into a Wikidata account.
  3. Attendees will choose a creator to make a template for from the list provided. (NOTE: Some Creator templates may be created already and not be in the spreadsheet - search WM Commons before you create a new Creator template. If a template exists, add it to the spreadsheet!)
  4. Attendees will include the creator's Wikidata number in the template.
  5. Attendees will search for artworks by the creator and add the new "Creator" template to the assets.
  6. Attendees will add a link to the new Creator template to the spreadsheet above.
  7. Attendees will add new "creator" and "category" information to Wikidata object records.

  • Check your spelling! If you're not sure what the name of the creator is for the template, check out what their name in Wikidata is.

  1. Ask one of the in-person editors for help.
  2. Reach out to other editors through Twitter using the "#HerNaturalHistoryWiki" hashtag.
  3. Write a note documenting a question or problem you have.

They will be supporting remote participants as part of the workshop at Smithsonian Libraries.
