Automatic queue trimming

{{resolved}} What happened to the automatic queue trimming? StaticGull  Talk  15:32, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. Please go to Queue >> Manage Queues. Then under Queue options you will see "remove edits after..." Just enable that and set a time and it should work. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 16:03, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Filtering by IP address

{{resolved}} Hi. Is there a way (or may I request an enhancement) to filter for a range of IP addresses? I had been using WikiMonitor to patrol the anonymous edits coming from the schools using our Class B, and would like to start using Huggle instead. Thanks in advance. --NERIC-Security (talk) 15:48, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Please go to Queue >> Manage Queues. Then go to filters. You will see a text box for a regex of a user name. This should work for Ip addresses also. Then hopfully only edits that match that will be shown :) ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 16:05, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Bug 6 - New messages

I saw Wikipedia on Firefox that I had "new messages" from a user. I didn't look at my user talk page, and opened in Huggle some diffs, used "view this revision", "Edit this page" and then "preview" and Huggle never showed me that I have new messages. Got back to Firefox and opened a random page on pt.wikipedia, there it was "You got new messages". I think I read somewhere that Huggle inform us that we have new messages.

Must be some localization/translation issues... Calvin 1998 (t-c) 15:01, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
In version 0.8.1 it works. Although message is in english (better than nothing) Thanks. Mosca (talk) 22:34, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Feature-Request: More descriptive error messages / error logs

Hey, I think in the next version, the error messages should be more informative. I think "Unable to login" or "Failed to load global configuration page" could include information like "Cannot find server" / "No internet connection" / etc so that people know why it did not work. Also, I'd like to see error reports generated on crashes to allow better identification of a problem that caused a crash. SoWhy review me! 17:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

What data should said error reports contain? -- Gurch (talk) 17:22, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, currently for example I cannot login. I have no idea why, because I have not changed anything. All Huggle does is, showing "logging in..." and then crashing (I had this before, see a few sections above). But why does this happen? Can't it connect to Wikipedia? Or can't it load a certain page? Can't it connect to the RecentChanges feed? I don't know and Huggle does not tell me. Also, if it does not crash, it might tell me "Unable to login" or "Failed to load global configuration page" but not, why that is the case. So I have no idea how to fix the problem, if it is with me...so I thought a report might be nice that tells me about what Huggle did just before the crash... SoWhy review me! 17:36, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Hmm... so a self-debugging version? That's the second time it's been requested :o Calvin 1998 (t-c) 00:18, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
I don't think this is such a silly request. I too am having the persistent "unable to login" error message, and it would be nice to know what the problem actually is (server timeout, wrong password, etc etc). Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to put in even some basic error messages that might indicate to the user where the problem is. Lankiveil (speak to me) 11:34, 2 September 2008 (UTC).
If your password is wrong it will say so. However there is no easy way to distinguish between, for example, misconfiguration of network settings, misconfiguration of router, router works fine but can't connect to Internet, Internet works fine but Wikimedia sites are down, Wikimedia sites are just really slow and not working, Wikimedia sites are fine but your Internet is slow for some reason, Wikimedia sites are actually fine but decided to pretend they aren't and spit out an error message as they periodically seem to do, everything works but you forgot to plug the network cable in, everything works but you have a firewall that's blocking Huggle, everything works but somewhere between you and the Internet there's something blocking Huggle, you put in the wrong proxy settings, you put in proxy settings when you're not actually behind a proxy, you didn't put in proxy settings when you are behind a proxy, you put in proxy settings but the proxy server is having a bad day, and so forth. All of these and more will get you "unable to login" -- Gurch (talk) 11:39, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Bug: Incorrect warning count

I pressed "Q" to revert and warn an user, but I noticed that I used the wrong warning. So I undid the warning and warned the user again, using the correct warning template. But now Huggle used a level 2 warning for it instead of a level 1 warning. SoWhy 19:01, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Huggle remembers warnings that were on the page even if they get removed, to stop the user evading a report by removing their own warnings. I'll have to arrange for undo to bypass that somehow -- Gurch (talk) 19:59, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

You can't run huggle w/out logging in, that's for sure. I suppose one definitive way is to checkuser the IP and look at the user-agent and see if it's a browser or huggle (huggle has it's own user-agent). But no checkuser would do that... But I'm pretty sure that anons can't use huggle OR get rollback. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 20:12, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

  • That's me I'm afraid. I was logged in, but Huggle froze momentarily while I was reverting and registered my reverts by my IP adress (there were two - [2], not my username (my IP's shared btw, which is why I always use my account). I didn't know what happened, but it seemed to correct itself afterwards. Sorry :(. I really didn't mean to cause any trouble or anything. • For some reason, when I was reverting those two edits, Huggle completely froze (I couldn't press any other buttons or exit the program). It froze for about 7 seconds and then made my reversions but registered them by my IP address and not my username. The edits I made afterwards were fine, but on those two edits it froze and didn't register my username. Hope that helps. TheSuave 12:06, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
  • It is also happening to me right now [3]. It only occurs when I revert and warn - just reverting is ok (although the only reverts I did were on myself in the sandbox). Started happening after I restarted Huggle shortly after closing it. Nothing strange seemed to happen, although the log at the bottom of the Huggle window did not update when I issued the revert+warn (oh and the warning never showed up on the vandals page). THEN WHO WAS PHONE? (talk) 15:38, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
  • I have the same thing. I had Huggle running and then accidentally clicked on "logout" in Firefox and logged in back again but since then Huggle uses my IP for reverts until I restart it. SoWhy 22:53, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion 3 - Google search

Add option in context menu (menu that is shown when we click with right mouse button) while we have text selected on diff panel to search in Goggle if is a copy from somewhere (copyright violations, etc). Note: if we select ABS G DG DGF, should search "ABS G DG DGF" to find an exact phrase.

Security question

I often use a not so secure wifi connection to access Wikipedia. I do not feel secure typing in much of any password on it. Is there any way we could use secure.wikimedia for this tool - or would that be too heavy on the server? Magog the Ogre (talk) 15:14, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

I'd suggest creating an alternate account for insecure connections (this is an explicitly-allowed legitimate use for a sock account). – iridescent 15:17, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Hmm. Would you be willing to grant me rollback rights on it? And I'm still looking to see if there is any interest in the secure thing - it would help administrators too. Magog the Ogre (talk) 15:24, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
The problem with the secure server is that it's very slow. This makes it somewhat undesirable for dealing with vandalism -- Gurch (talk) 16:00, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
I'll give you rollback on it; register the account and then request it from me with your main account (so I know you're not an impersonator). It would be a good idea to either redirect the talkpage to your own talkpage, or put a {{User Alternate Acct|Magog the Ogre}} on it, so someone with any problem knows who to contact.( – iridescent 19:29, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
I've added support for the secure server to my list of things to do but it's quite low priority at the moment -- Gurch (talk) 09:27, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

speedy delete dialog box bug

In 0.8.1 version I got one problem. When I click in button "tag this page" and then click "Speedy..." button. Dialog box/window it's fine, but if I choose a Reason in drop-down menu, "OK" and "Cancel" buttons are placed under reason field and I almost can't click on those buttons (got to be very precise clicking on a 2 pixels button). If I choose another template in reason drop menu again, I can't do nothing besides closing that dialog box because I don't see buttons and reason drop down menu. They are placed under title dialog box. Mosca (talk) 11:43, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

User warning messages - "Thanks."

In the messages that Huggle warns, at the end is a short "Thanks." Since most user warnings end with "Thank you," and since Wikipedia is kind of a formal place, I thought of the idea that at the end of a message Huggle leaves on a user's talk page, "Thanks" should be changed to "Thank you." SchfiftyThree 23:59, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Done Even though the contention that Wikipedia is a formal place and the one that "Thank you." is better than "Thanks" can be disputed, I went BOLD and changed all of the Template:Huggle subpages to implement this. Changes should start taking place immediately Calvin 1998 (t-c) 00:18, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
While on that...can someone put all 3 of the unsourced template messages and also the final generic message under the warn option? I find myself warning a lot for that, and I know an unsourced warning is under the templates to send to user, but that only does one level, and several times yesterday I had to go to the unsourced templates (linked earlier) to manually raise the warning level, instead of easily clicking the warning button on Huggle. Ctjf83Talk 01:52, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm a little wary of the idea that someone can be blocked merely for adding unsourced content to pages -- Gurch (talk) 08:33, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Well said, Gurch, but this would happen only if the user chose to continue inserting unsourced content, thus ignoring warnings. To me this amounts to vandalism. From my experience users (especially anonymous ones) who behave this way nearly always turn out to be true vandals or fail to accept a key Wikipeda policy, WP:SOURCE that is. There are users who seem to enjoy inserting wrong or questionable details, e. g. about a person's sexual preference, or simply *facts* which are completely wrong but tend to get overlooked by people not familiar with a certain subject. Cheers! --Catgut (talk) 20:52, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Aha, I didn't realize those Xs and lines were clickable. New problem: Under the Page Title filters tab, I can't get my preferences to stick. I'm under the Filtered edits menu (selected on the left), and under that tab under Namespaces, if I uncheck anything and close the window, as soon as I open it everything is checked again. The .NET Framework 2.0 yes... Web 2.0 is a general term for the 2nd web generation... Reedy
No, it does not require Web 2.0, as there's no AJAX, JavaScript, Flash, overly large icons, fancy glass effects, blogs, social networking, complex CSS layouts, technology investment bubbles or context-sensitive Google Ads. Problem

Is it just me, or is the new version slower than the previous version? Especially when Huggle is reverting an edit or warning a user, loading pages is very slow. Also, sometimes when I try to revert an edit, it shows that it is being reverted (the message is displayed at the bottom) but after a while the message disappears and the edit is not reverted. This is not because of an edit conflict or another user had already reverted it, as the vandal edit is still there. Chamal Talk ± 05:16, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia's been really slow for me lately, it might have something to do with the servers rather than Huggle itself. Although I think that has something to do with the depressingly enormous pings we get from US servers in Australia, so I dunno. That doesn't help you at all. --Closedmouth (talk) 06:44, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
I have all that symptoms too in portuguese wikipedia. Don't know if it's Huggle or Wikimedia servers. It's very annoying having to revert edits in external browser sometimes. Huggle is so useful. When it fails, I feel I returned to stone age. Mosca (talk) 07:22, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
As more and more features are added to huggle the program will slowly get slower. Archiving. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 17:33, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Low priority request

Although in no way essential, it would be rather nifty to have Huggle configure the vandalism information template at the press of a button. StaticGull  Talk  12:40, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

I suppose it would be nice4 to have another form to be able to change the comment e.t.c from. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 13:00, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
If I was going in that direction, I would have Huggle update that template automatically based on activity data. I've already written and tested code which will do that. However, that would no doubt annoy people, and so I would have to do it in a separate template, which nobody would ever look at, which would be pointless, and indeed the template is pointless for Huggle users anyway since Huggle displays activity statistics already -- Gurch (talk) 21:27, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Possible problem: Reverting whitelisted users?

It seems there may be a small issue with reverting in the new 0.8.1 version. Over the last two days i noticed several times that if an user edits a page before my revert is passed trough, both the vandals edit and the legitimate users edit is reverted, no matter if the user is a whitelisted user. The problem lies in this: "Reverted 2 edits by Fieldday-sunday and 92.43.64.77 to an older version by 92.43.64.77". The revert tackles the vandalism, then reverts another user (In this case a vandalism patrol) and then ends up restoring a vandalism version from the original vandal. These diffs are examples of this: [5] [6] [7] Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 14:11, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Are you intentionally reverting only one of the vandal's edits? If so, why? -- Gurch (talk) 16:09, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

This is what happens:

1:(cur) (last) 15:26, 18 September 2008 Excirial (Talk | contribs) m (9,873 bytes) (Reverted 2 edits by Fieldday-sunday and 92.43.64.77 to an older version by 92.43.64.77 (HG)) (undo)

4:(cur) (last) 15:24, 18 September 2008 92.43.64.77 (Talk) (9,873 bytes) (→Concept) (undo)
  1. In this case i was looking at the diff between edit 3 and 4.
  2. Fieldday-sunday reverts edit 3 and 4, thus creating edit 2.
  3. Seconds later i revert based upon the diff i am still looking at (3-4).
  4. What happens now is that edit 2 and 3 are reverted without warning, even though the top edit is made by whitelisted user Fieldday-sunday. The edit reverted to however is edit 4, an edit also made by the vandal.

I am not intentionally reverting only one of the vandals edits; Huggle seems to make that decision on its own. I am fairly certain i didn't mix up a setting because huggle will revert as expected in case a vandal makes several edits in a row. (IE: if i would have pressed revert before edit number 2 would have been made, all the edits 92.43.64.77 made in a row are reverted, no matter if its 2 or 20). I hope this clarifies the situation a little bit. Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 19:49, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it should be reverting past 4 anyway, and thus in this situation edit 1 would be a null edit and not saved. I suspect someone has changed one of the rollback error messages, so Huggle doesn't know what's going on and screws up. The best solution to that, of course, is to use something designed for automated processes, i.e. the MediaWiki API, rather than relying on HTML-scraping which periodically breaks. So why don't I do that in Huggle? Well, I'd happily use the API, but it's rather broken. You can't rollback edits by anonymous users through it, for a start, which makes it rather useless. And yes, I have filed a bug report, and it's even been fixed, but the fix hasn't gone live yet. Indeed no MediaWiki bug fixes have gone live at all for two weeks now -- Gurch (talk) 23:40, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

However, Wikipedia is giving me all kinds of errors when trying to submit changes. StaticGull  Talk  13:39, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
It means that it tried to rollback and got an error back. You know how sometimes you try to load a page and get "Wikipedia has a problem" or the teal error page, but then the next thing you try it works fine? That sort of thing. It usually works when it retries, and if it doesn't will usually work if you try again -- Gurch (talk) 17:58, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Unable to login with non-unified accounts

Ok, I'm using Version 0.7.12 because 0.8.1 doesn't work on my Vista Home Premium laptop, I have .NET Framework 2.0 installed as well. Huggle has been working alright for the first couple of days that I have been using it, but now it doesn't even load; it crashes after I enter my login details (It now does the same on my Windows XP computer). Any suggestions on how to fix it? It used to work perfectly before this. No error messages appear; it just says: "huggle has stopped working" - Nick C (t·c) 14:07, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Seems to work now, but sometimes when I try to log on it crashes, I have to try a lot of times before it lets me login. - Nick C (t·c) 17:58, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
It's crashing again :( - Nick C (t·c) 19:20, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
The same thing's happening to me. Huggle 0.8.1 isn't working either. Epbr123 (talk) 19:53, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Same here, I keep getting the following message "Huggle has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." every time I try to sign in on both version 0.7.12. and 0.8.1. Huggle worked just fine yesterday. Cheers. Just to add to this issue, I've been figuring out how to fix this and found that my usual account can login whereas my doppelgänger account cannot and crashes as others mentioned. Only difference between the two was that this account has SUL whereas my Huggle-only account does not. Migrated my Huggle account to SUL and now it logs in fine. Why exactly it now seemingly requires SUL active accounts is beyond me but it solved it for me and may be the same for others. treelo radda 19:22, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Also, but most likely unrelated, I usually use 0.7.12 but now can use 0.8.1 whereas before I wasn't able to due to it not being able to retrieve the projects. treelo radda 19:27, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Mmm, yeah - I set up a unified account today (without seeing this, heh) and I can now log in again. That would appear to be the issue. Ale_Jrbtalk 19:31, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Any other possible solution? I don't want to unify my account. Useight (talk) 01:46, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Most likely not, might be a situation similar to how rollback became a requirement to use Huggle. treelo radda 10:02, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

If it's of any help to you or Useight, the additional accounts won't be created if you've never been off en.wiki before and will only be created once you goto another project. Can't see people's objections to SUL myself but if it's a concern then it seems it's the only way to make this work and is a necessary evil. treelo radda 10:02, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Unified accounts have different session cookies to non-unified accounts; Huggle has to be able to deal with both cases. My guess is that something changed which broke Huggle's interpretation of non-unified session cookies -- Gurch (talk) 10:30, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

I have identified the cause of this issue. Recently, MediaWiki has been changed so that when users log in, they are taken back to the page they were viewing before they logged in. However, this change does not affect unified login accounts. When a user logs in, a session cookie is sent back with the response, and Huggle needs this in order to be able to edit pages. However, the response to a non-unified account login is now an HTTP redirection, so a second request has to be made; .NET's WebClient class, which Huggle uses, handles redirections automatically, but does not handle cookies, and so the cookies returned in the original request were being lost. My solution to this is to extend WebClient and attach a CookieContainer, which then handles the cookies. The issue is fixed in the next version -- Gurch (talk) 20:59, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

huggle

Sort of random, but is huggle supposed to be spelt with a lowercase 'h'? Shouldn't it be capital? Vinson 01:11, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Doesn't really matter. There are plenty of software/product names that aren't capitalized, though -- Gurch (talk) 12:16, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Bug 2 - Last diff

Note: this bug sometimes happen, not always, don't know why. So the following description is when it "happens". Until now always happened, but I verified it again and it doesn't! Huggle must be joking!

When I see 1 diff (Huggle loads only last 2 edits to that page):

  • I click on "Show previous revision of this page" button and it shows me the correct diff
  • I click on "Show next revision of this page" button and doesn't shows me the last edit again (the first I saw), stays on previous diff.

But there are 2 situations where I can see the last diff again:

  • If I click in "History" button to retrieve all page history Its all working well, and I can see the last edit/diff, even if I browsed throw history
  • If I click in the previous little box/edit with right mouse button.

Suggestion 2 - Grey list

Option to always show certain users in "Filtered changes", although they are in White List because Huggle adds them automatically. Could be in another list "Grey List" or something. Can be useful if we want to patrol certain users like "Commons Delinker" with a lot of edits or others users each wikipedia project could choose. This option is for those projects Huggle communities/projects who decide to automatically add users with more than XX edits but at the same time exclude from filter some users witch have those edits.

Suggestion 8 - improved history

In "contributions bar" where it shows those little colored boxes, should have a little extra space if previous contributions where made some time ago (1 week for example).

  • Example: user X made the following edits:
    • 1 June article A
    • 1 June article B
    • 15 June article C
    • 30 June article D
    • 1 August article E
    • 18 August article F
    • 20 August article G
  • Contributions bar:
  • Note: I'm suggesting only acording to last edits, and not according to all edits. It's not necessary and would be a mess (or may be not):

This idea could be in "History" too, showing a little extra space between recent edits and previous edits made a week before. I think this idea is only useful to see if an anonymous user made vandalism recently to other pages. It's not important to see differences more than 1 week before because most IP change regularly, and the same IP can be used to good faith edits and bad faith edits.

The date of edit is shown in the 'tooltip' that appears when you hold the mouse over the icons. Putting in gaps would be quite difficult to do, and would only visualize what the tooltip already shows.

Bug 1 - Href

Previously reported in Wikipedia:Huggle/Feedback/Archive 9#Bugs:

I found an error in this example (look at edit summary: Href= is not a user). It happens sometimes wen I try to revert consecutive edits by 2 or 3 different editors (not specific editors, just anyone). I'm using version 0.7.12

It seems "Href=" problem happens in any edit, doesn't matter witch users/edits/pages, doing the following sequence for example:

  • I'm seeing 1 diff (Huggle shows 2 edits of the page - 2 colored boxes)
  • I see in "User" field the correct user
  • I click in "show previous revision of this page (Z)" button
  • I see in "User" field the value "Href="
  • I click again in "show previous revision of this page (Z)" button
  • I see in "User" field the value "Href="
  • I click again in "show next revision of this page (X)" button
  • I see in "User" field the value "Href="
  • Except the last one edit, if I see others diffs from previous edits - clicking in those little colored boxes in History bar, It happens the same.

But (after doing those previous steps):

  • If I click in "History" button to retrieve all page history, its all fine: browsing history clicking in those little colored boxes or navigating through "show previous revision of this page (Z)" and "show next revision of this page (X)" buttons. Mosca (talk)

In version 0.8.1 it's not anymore "Href=". Now shows Io:Mosca (not yet written) or Io:Mosca (Mosca it's just an user example) in user field. For anonymous edits shows Ribui%C3%A7%C3%B5es/201.3.223.128 instead of 201.3.223.128. May be it's because of pt:Especial:Contribuições/201.3.223.128 special page name in portuguese, equivalent to Special:Contributions/201.3.223.128. Like in previous version, this can be "fixed" if I click in "History" button in Huggle. Mosca (talk) 22:32, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Flagged revisions

Hi.

Thank you for this very nice tool. It is used more and more often on the German Wikipedia. But on de-WP we use Flagged Revisions, so it would be nice to have a button in order to mark a version as "sighted" and go to the next edit. The Russian Wikipedia also uses flagged revisions. --Euku 15:53, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Heyho,
is it possible to integrate in Huggle, that in german wikipedia users do automatic sight a version, when next version in tab on the left side get clicked? Another button is senceful, to skip version, without sighting. That would be very excellent, for this at this time much excellent tool! Greetings from Dresden, Conny (talk) 08:59, 29 August 2008 (UTC).

Wikipedia:Flagged_revisions is turned on on german wikipedia. Conny (talk) 09:01, 29 August 2008 (UTC).

On the no-wiki we use a (similar) system. Every edits done by IPs and other newcomers get tagged with a red exclamation mark (! – like the third line in this picture) and patrollers/administrators can press a button "Merk som patruljert" saying the edit has been patrolled (Patrol log [8]). Adding an icon that sends a a press to this button would be great (ex. this edit I marked patrolled by sending this [9]!). Nsaa (talk) 22:23, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
And en.wikipedia uses a 'patrolling' system, but only for new pages. If only everyone could settle on the same system, rather than using three different MediaWiki extensions. I will have to implement them all... -- Gurch (talk) 09:52, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Is it possible to only add a key shortcut (config page?) to mark a version patrolled and show the ! in the window? (for the no-version). Nsaa (talk) 12:08, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Sorry but I dont quite get what you mean. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 17:00, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
In no. non-patrolled edits show up with a red "!" in Special:Recentchanges. The rest of the request I don't really get either. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 22:07, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Maybe it is possbile to have some IRC words to think about makeing sighting possible via huggle? Very thanks, Conny (talk) 08:00, 3 October 2008 (UTC).

I've installed and used the flagged revisions extension on a test wiki so I know how it works. I'll add support for sighting revisions once I fix the other rather more urgent problems -- Gurch (talk) 12:26, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Gurch, great stuff! Maybe its possible like described - clicking a new article on the left side sight last unhandelt viewed revision. A button on toolbar for leaving article unsighted would be necessery. Love and happyness from Pillnitz, Conny (talk) 18:06, 3 October 2008 (UTC).

I hadn't gotten an emailed version for a long while and today I finally wondered by to see why and found that we're downloading it ourselves now. I did so uneventfully, but when I tried to run it it immediately gave me the following error even before bringing up the login page.

NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I can click "continue" to bring up the login page, but the project list is blank and typing in my login information just brings back the same error. I have FF and Chrome running and tried firing up my IE to see if that made a difference, nada. Any hints here would be appreciated. —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 03:33, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately the only thing we can do is wait for Gurch to get around to fixing this (it's a bug, as far as I know), and release a new version. You'll just have to deal with not having it for a while. Or you can use 0.7.12, it's still enabled... Calvin 1998 (t·c) 05:03, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the advice. I didn't know I could download and use the previous version- that one is working just fine now. Thanks again! —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 07:16, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
I am having the exact same problem. Net 2.0, with Windows XP SP3. Guess I'll have to stick with Version 7.12 or whatever the previous version was. Vandalism destroyer (talk) 14:20, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Found out how to fix it. Download the latest version of that NET framework stuff. 2.0 doesnt't seem to like it or something.

Bug moving a page

I moved the page in Huggle (version 0.8.1) pt:Sascsi to pt:Serial Attached SCSI as we can see here successfully but Huggle shows in log:

2008-09-11 05:44:14 (+01:00) -- Did not move 'Sascsi' to 'Serial Attached SCSI'; the target might already exist

I tried it again in another page and shows me the same error although Huggle moved the page. Mosca (talk) 06:03, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Forgot to mention: Huggle doesn't shows the new edit in "history bar" (in this case that was added "REDIRECT: XYZ"). Still showing previous diff before moving the page. Any way this is not very important to fix right now, since I can move pages and there are others bugs more important to all Huggle users. Mosca (talk) 07:22, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Warn Suggestion

Hi, I was wondering if it was possible to create an option to open the warn "box" (labeled as advanced) upon pressing the warn key rather than having the warn drop down menu open. I am suggesting this because I normally only (I'm assuming others are in the same boat too) need to do a revert and then warn if I am skipping a warning level like going from level one warning to three, or starting off at a level two. It makes it a lot easier than hitting w, then manually opening the advanced box. Dadude3320 21:36, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Computer resources

Huggle becomes VERY resource intensive whenever I switch to the "All changes" queue, to the point that it locks up my computer. Now i'm not sure, but I think this might have to do with the fact that my cpu is only rated at 700 mhz. just wanted to let you know. Vandalism destroyer (talk) 00:34, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Mkay, i can't stand how slow this version is compared to 7.12. It is possible to make a version thats far less resource intensive, so instead of using fancy 3D icons with shading and whatnot, just use flat textured icons. This would be a nice version for someone like me with a very old and slow computer Vandalism destroyer (talk) 00:34, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

The icons are just embedded .png files, I'm pretty sure they are not responsible for any performance issues. I develop and test Huggle on an 800 MHz CPU and haven't noticed excessive usage except when loading very large diffs, and that is the browser component trying to render it, which isn't my code. The queues do work differently in the newer version, a necessity in order to allow the customization features that have been added. Does the "All changes" queue always cause excessive CPU usage, or only when it gets over a certain size? If so, how big does it get before this happens? -- Gurch (talk) 10:29, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Well when my computer froze, the all changes list was like 500 changes long. I've sinced changed the settings to trim all changes to 1 minute long, and it works better, but still seems slower than 7.12

I used to have a bit of trouble with that too. Although it might not be CPU (might be memory, I don't keep monitors on everything). It starts to get slow after a few hundred. By 500 it was stalling my computer and crashing the core OS processes :( (and my computer isn't that slow either... it's a 2GHz dual-core with 1GB RAM). I have a 1 minute expiry set now. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 04:42, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Odd. I just loaded 0.8.1 and let the all changes queue accumulate 500 items. At that point it was using 56 MB of memory (most of which is the .NET runtime itself, rather than Huggle), and averaging around 20% of CPU time. I tested it up to the maximum of 5000 items before release and the figures were little different. Perhaps I should run it through a profiler -- Gurch (talk) 17:55, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Whitelist updating appears on vandal title instead

I just got done using Huggle, and the program automatically updated the whitelist, but it instead went to the title that "Grawp" moved to. How can it be? The Whitelist page should be move-protected, so this won't happen in the future. SchfiftyThree 00:25, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

It's move-protected now. (and I think might be semi'd too). Calvin 1998 (t·c) 02:41, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

O_o wtf!?

I just had something very unusual happen to me while using Huggle 0.7.12.

I was doing reverts and stuff to vandalism, and recently received a "RickK Anti-Vandalism Barn-star". A few minutes later, I go to do a revert, and I get this dialog that says "You have been blocked from editing." I feel my heart shoot right though my body, down the second floor, and onto the basement floor. I'm thinking: Oh ^&%#. Wtf did I do!? I go to my talk page in Firefox, and I see no indication of me being blocked in my talk page. The same goes for my user page.

I go back into huggle, and attempt to do a revert, and it works like normal again. So what the heck happened there? It scared the heck outta me. Is it a glitch, or was I actually blocked for a split second? --Vandalism destroyer (talk) 03:44, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

This has come up before. It may be that huggle is throwing up the "you have been blocked" message if the edit fails for other reasons such as the "mediawiki error" messages that are unfortunatly becoming more common.--Ron Ritzman (talk) 03:58, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't know if this is your case, but you see exactly this message "You user account appears to be blocked from editing" when you try to edit/revert a protected page and you are not an administrator. When I saw this message for the first time I felt the same. Mosca (talk) 14:56, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, HTML scraping is buggy. It will use the API instead if and when I find myself with an infinite amount of time to address these things -- Gurch (talk) 18:00, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

"Unable to login." Can not use either version of Huggle at all

Just downloaded Huggle today, (newest version gives me the same exceptions as the ones posted above so I'm using the older one) and whenever I try to login, knowing my password is correct, it always gives me an "Unable to login" message. I have no firewall connected and no proxy settings, so I'm really unsure as to what could be causing this. Any help would be appreciated :) --60.242.106.22 (talk) 09:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

That was me, by the way. I am using Vista. If I type the wrong password it's still an "unable to login." Pity, I really wanted to try Huggle out... --RazorICE 09:05, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Just wanted to also mention that I've tried it the past two days as well and it still hasn't worked, so I'm going to assume it's something on my end (not on Wikipedia's or Huggle's). However, I am still unsure as to what can be happening as I am behind no firewalls or proxies. Any help would be appreciated. :) --RazorICE 13:54, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Feature request

Can something be done to stop huggle crashing when the connection fails? I guess this is not a problem that everyone has, but my connection is rubbish and keeps on disconnecting. Every time that happens, huggle crashes and I have to restart it (and huggle is not that quick starting, so the waiting drives me nuts). It'd be nice if something can be done to keep huggle on standby or something until the connection is re-established. Chamal Talk ± 12:46, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

In my own testing, disconnecting from the Internet while Huggle is running does not crash it (though it will sometimes crash if it is disconnected while closing). What error message do you recieve? -- Gurch (talk) 19:40, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
It always crashes with me, both 0.7.12 and 0.8.1. The usual message: "huggle has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." And windows wants me to tell Microsoft about the problem :) Tell me if you need the contents of the error report as well. Cheers. Chamal Talk ± 00:27, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I've gotten the same message. I've tried to send the error report, restart the computer, log on while connected, log on while disconnected, reinstall it, but somehow, none of these work. Montgomery' 39 (talk) 00:47, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Can you paste the error message contents here? Calvin 1998 (t·c) 01:45, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, there's a lot of stuff in that error report, and it doesn't let me copy-paste it. I think it's the message issued by windows; the same thing you see when any program crashes saying "... has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" There's nothing like the error information that huggle gives, as in other errors shown on this page. Chamal Talk ± 12:14, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Huggle broken?

Huh, that's odd. I'm using it right now. Vandalism destroyer (talk) 14:42, 30 September 2008 (UTC

I readded the links for the header, the old (7.12) is still working for me. If there is anything that can be done to help Gurch, let us know. Cheers! BoccobrockT 17:46, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
And huggle's just broken for some people. Some people have fatal exceptions in both 0.7.12 and 0.8.1, some people can use 0.7.12 just fine, some people can actually use it all w/out any problems. There's just been a lot of complaints recently :/ Calvin 1998 (t·c) 02:35, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
"Huggle is unstable and may make edits you won't expect but you'll nonetheless be held accountable for, and also possibly has issues with talkpage protection due to changes in the way the MediaWiki interface handles IP blocks" isn't as snappy a header, though. – iridescent 02:46, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Maybe just word the warning differently to help users understand that huggle is being exceptionally buggy. IceUnshattered [ t ] 02:48, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Done. But as a side-note, most of the problems are MediaWiki bugs/changes they didn't say anything about :/ Calvin 1998 (t·c) 03:08, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

First of all, can you get the file to download and get on your computer? If not, that's likely a problem on your side. If you can, and simply can't run it, what sort of error message do you get? The full text of the error message is helpful to us. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 06:42, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
Oh, and a "failure to initialize" error is almost always caused by a lack of the .NET Framework (make sure you have version 2 as linked to in the download instructions, having version 3 only doesn't work). Calvin 1998 (t·c) 06:43, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

For some reason, when I log in to huggle, I get an error message shortly thereafter saying "Huggle has encountered a problem and needs to close" and that type of crap. It happened on both the previous and current version of huggle. What i think the problem has to do with my recently removed and regained RB rights. If someone could help me, that would be great, for right now I am ripping my hair out. Montgomery' 39 (talk) 00:12, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I have the same issue, what is going on? I, however, still have RB rights. Ctjf83Talk 19:58, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Uhh, can you narrow down what I'm looking for, or just make my life easier and give me a fix here. Ctjf83Talk 20:41, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Iv narrowed down the top of the page for you. "HUGGLE IS BROKEN USE SOMETHING ELSE KTHX" :). Changes in mediawiki have kind of screwed stuff up :) ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 20:44, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Uhh...is that some smartass answer, or is it something that is being fixed now? Why is it that other users can use it, and I can't? Ctjf83Talk 20:56, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
I could give you a full explanation, or I can use the time it would take to type it out to try to fix this problem. I apologize for being rude. I am not coping very well with life at the moment. -- Gurch (talk) 21:01, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
I was talking to Addshore, not you, Gurch. But yes, please take the time to fix the problem :) Ctjf83Talk 22:04, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Well Gurch, all I can do currently is say "good luck fixing the problem". So, here I go... Good luck fixing the problem :) Montgomery' 39 (talk) 22:32, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Sorry for that Ctjf83. The reason huggle is currently very broken is that the Mediawiki software has been updated and huggle has cannot handle this update. This causes issues with cookies e.t.c. It may start working if you have a unified login. I hope this explains a bit more to what the problem is. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 13:29, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

"BROKEN"?

Hi. Why do people use Huggle if it has said "MEDIAWIKI CHANGES/BUGS HAVE BROKEN HUGGLE USE SOMETHING ELSE THANKS" on Wikipedia:Huggle since 18 January 2008? Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 17:37, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

It hasn't. That's part of the template at the top. -- how do you turn this on 17:40, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
And it does work for some people. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 02:31, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Do you plan on using the messages box any time soon, or can I just turn it off without fear of missing an important message? --Closedmouth (talk) 13:38, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Don't know. It was a feature request -- Gurch (talk) 20:47, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Ill try and add some interesting stuff to it from now on :P ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 09:46, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Will it ever be fixed?

Hi, I've recently taken a 3month(ish) break from wikipedia, but i've come back and huggle isn't working. Do you know if it will ever be fixed? Also, what do you recommend I use instead? Vandalproof isn't accepting new users (I was never approved or denied, I was put on the list a long time ago). Thanks, Nappymonster (talk) 10:29, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't know, and as to what to do instead, go outside or something -- Gurch (talk) 11:05, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes hopefully it will be fixed soon :). ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 09:46, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Bug in 0.7.12

I realise that there are a hell of a lot of bugs going on with Huggle, but I have a feeling this one may actually be fixable, ie it is something on my end that is going on. Huggle keeps on crashing at random intervals, with the following signature:

EventType : clr20r3 P1 : huggle.exe P2 : 0.7.12.0 P3 : 4894701a

P4 : system.drawing P5 : 2.0.0.0 P6 : 4333aeaf P7 : 437 P8 : 2c

P9 : system.invalidoperationexception

Any ideas? neuro(talk) 20:07, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

I would if I could decode what P3 through P8 meant. P9 is the exception that occurred, P1 is the application, and P2 is the version number. One of the unknown things is probably where the exception occurred (which is kind of important to know...) Anyhow, thanks for the report, and if Gurch gets around to figuring this out it'll likely get fixed. Calvin 1998 (t·c) 21:38, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
P4 is the library. P5 is the .NET version Reedy 21:49, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
