Wikipedia:General sanctions/Syrian Civil War and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant

Community discussion edit

A community discussion at WP:AN has placed pages related to the Syrian Civil War under general sanctions indefinitely effective 21:08, 31 August 2013 (UTC).

Amendment edit

As the result of a discussion at WP:AN, the scope of the Syrian Civil War general sanctions is amended to apply to all pages related to the Syrian Civil War or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, broadly construed. However, the one revert rule continues to apply to articles, not all pages, in the scope of the sanctions. 21:43, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Motion edit

A motion to revoke authorisation for this sanctions regime in certain topic areas was filed at the administrators' noticeboard on 18 November 2015. The motion did not gain community consensus. 04:48, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Remedies edit

The remedies mirror those of WP:ARBPIA (see below for details). Sanctions imposed cannot be undone by another administrator without approval of the sanctioning administrator or by an appeal to WP:AN. Pages may be tagged with {{SCW&ISIL sanctions}}, and {{Editnotice SCW 1RR}} may be used to indicate that articles are under general sanctions. The presence of these templates is not a prerequisite for issuing sanctions, but editors should be made aware of them prior to being sanctioned. Editors must be notified of discretionary sanctions with the {{subst:Gs/alert|syr}} template.

  • Any uninvolved administrator may, at his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor working in the area of conflict if, despite being warned, that editor repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process.
  • The sanctions imposed may include blocks of up to one year in length, bans from editing any page or set of pages within the area of conflict, bans on any editing related to the topic or its closely related topics, restrictions on reverts or other specified behaviors; or any other measures which the imposing administrator believes are reasonably necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the project.
  • Prior to any sanctions being imposed, the editor shall be given a warning with a link to this decision and, where appropriate, should be counseled on specific steps that he or she can take to improve his or her editing in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Sanctions imposed may be appealed to the imposing administrator or at the appropriate administrators' noticeboard.

In addition a one revert rule, which does not require notice, with the following specifications is imposed:

  • All articles related to the Syrian Civil War and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, broadly construed, are placed under WP:1RR (one revert per editor per article per 24 hour period). When in doubt, assume an edit is related and so is a revert.
    • Clear vandalism of whatever origin may be reverted without restriction. Reverts of edits made by anonymous IP editors that are not vandalism are exempt from 1RR but are subject to the usual rules on edit warring.
    • Editors who otherwise violate this 1RR restriction may be blocked without warning by any uninvolved administrator, even on a first offence.

Log of notifications edit

Manually logging notifications is no longer required when using {{subst:Gs/alert|syr}}. This section is retained for historical purposes.

List here editors who have been placed on notice of the remedies in place (including the diff of the notification). For consistency, the template {{subst:Gs/SCW&ISIL notification}} must be used.
