Speedy deletion nomination of Tomb of Artaxerxes III edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Tomb of Artaxerxes III requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Bots Newsletter, August 2019 edit

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Greetings!

Here is the 7th issue of the Bots Newsletter, a lot happened since last year's newsletter! You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM
  • Nothing of note happened. Just like we like it.
BAG

BAG members are expected to be active on Wikipedia to have their finger on the pulse of the community. After two years without any bot-related activity (such as posting on bot-related pages, posting on a bot's talk page, or operating a bot), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice. Retired members can re-apply for BAG membership as normal if they wish to rejoin the BAG.

We thank former members for their service and wish Madman a happy retirement. We note that Madman and BU Rob13 were not inactive and could resume their BAG positions if they so wished, should their retirements happens to be temporary.

BOTDICT

Two new entries feature in the bots dictionary

BOTPOL
  • Activity requirements: BAG members now have an activity requirement. The requirements are very light, one only needs to be involved in a bot-related area at some point within the last two years. For purpose of meeting these requirements, discussing a bot-related matter anywhere on Wikipedia counts, as does operating a bot (RFC).
  • Copyvio flag: Bot accounts may be additionally marked by a bureaucrat upon BAG request as being in the "copyviobot" user group on Wikipedia. This flag allows using the API to add metadata to edits for use in the New pages feed (discussion). There is currently 1 bot using this functionality.
  • Mass creation: The restriction on mass-creation (semi-automated or automated) was extended from articles, to all content-pages. There are subtleties, but content here broadly means whatever a reader could land on when browsing the mainspace in normal circumstances (e.g. Mainspace, Books, most Categories, Portals, ...). There is also a warning that WP:MEATBOT still applies in other areas (e.g. Redirects, Wikipedia namespace, Help, maintenance categories, ...) not explicitely covered by WP:MASSCREATION.
BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

  • 20 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
  • 14 open BRFAs and 1 BRFA in need of BAG attention (see live status).
  • In 2018, 96 bot task were approved. An AWB search shows approximately 29 were withdrawn/expired, and 6 were denied.
  • Since the start of 2019, 97 bot task were approved. Logs show 15 were withdrawn/expired, and 15 were denied.
  • 10 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion). 5 other bots have been deflagged per operator requests or similar (see discussion).

Re: WP:BLP on Qasem Soleimani edit

Despite the name, WP:BLP generally applies to recently-dead people in addition to living ones, specifically for situations like this (where their death attracts massive amounts of attention to their article that make getting things right all the more important) - see WP:BDP. It will eventually cease to apply, but ~six months is considered normal before it stops applying (though it varies depending on the level of attention.) EDIT: That said, your edit was reverted inadvertently, probably due to being made at nearly the same time as mine - I don't see any WP:BLP issues with it and would have restored it myself if I'd noticed. --Aquillion (talk) 06:32, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Would you be able to help translate this source into English? edit

Hi ZxxZxxZ,

I believe this source (link:[[4]]) could be useful, but I can't really make use of it because I don't speak Persian. You seemed to be the most active recently of Persian-English translators [here] so I decided to reach out to you first: would you be able/willing to help translate it into English for me? I apologize if this is too much to ask.

Thanks,

3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 13:06, 1 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the paper itself too quite long to be translated completely. Is it any particular information you are trying to find in it? I am familiar with etymological studies of Iranian languages myself. --Z 13:12, 1 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
The parts that piqued my interest in particular were the part on the 5th page about "*Niөāvanta", the one on the 6th page about "Varkāna", on the 7th page about "*āp-šēnag" and "*āp-*xšaina" (etc), on the 9th page on "dāδmainya" and "damēnag" (etc), on the 11th page about "*margānag" (etc), and finally on the 14th page where a number of place name elements are listed in Arabic-Persian and also Roman scripts. Any info on what the surrounding sections are saying would be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, do you know of any other good sources on Iranian toponymy I could make use of? English Wikipedia is kind of lacking on that subject and I would like to expand it as much as I can.
Thanks,
3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 19:24, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
According to the paper, dāδmainya means "blowable (for toads)", ‫‪damēnag‬‬ means "hand fan", related to Middle Iranian dam- "to breath". For the rest, see wikt:مریانج, wikt:آبشینه, wikt:ورکانه, wikt:نهاوند that I just created. You can find good information and references in English Wiktionary entries, I am active there myself together with several other users who work on Persian entries. --Z 11:01, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Nizari–Seljuk conflicts edit

Hi! My recommendation for this would be to get some feedback by other editors as well, either at GOCE or at Peer Review, especially by editors who are unfamiliar with the specific topic and can point you to missing context. As an aside, I would strongly recommend discarding all the footnotes with Arabic/Farsi names. This is useless in an English encyclopedia, and only serves to confuse readers (and probably scare them off as well). Anything that is linked to an existing article doesn't need the original name either way, since that is mentioned there (or should be). Constantine 16:34, 5 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for the tips! Regarding the names, yes I want to ultimately move them to other (new) pages (I think all of them). The reason I added them in the first place was I spotted several mistakes in the spelling (transliterations) of the names in my secondary sources after checking the primary sources. --Z 09:16, 7 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Z, you don't happen to have any sources regarding the name of Yazdegerd? For some reason, Shahbazi says that the Pahlavi version of his name was 'Yazdekert' [5], yet all Middle Persian texts I've seen call him 'Yazdgird'. --HistoryofIran (talk) 05:46, 8 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, just like other Sasanian names, this word too may be transcribed in various ways. Note that the word "Pahlavi" (especially in older literature when it wasn't known that Parthian and Middle Persian are distinct languages) is a collective term referring to what is now known as Parthian and Middle Persian.
The accurate transcription of the suffix used by the Middle Persian of that period is uncertain (see the corresponding page in Wiktionary), the only certain fact is that it had been -gerd (Middle Persian e is also loosely transliterated as i, the exact pronunciation is uncertain) in Manichaean Middle Persian and -kert in (earlier forms of) Parthian, because it is -kert in Armenian. But the Middle Persian form (except early/proto-Middle Persian forms) can be reconstructed as *-gerd: note the Ancient Greek (Isdigérdēs), Latin (Isdegerdes), and Georgian (iezdigerd) forms in wikt:Yazdegerd.
In short, Shahbazi is mentioning a form that reflects the pronunciation in what is now known as (early) Parthian and (early) Middle Persian, note the Old Armenian Yazkert in wikt:Yazdegerd. --Z 13:17, 9 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I see, that was really enlightening. Thanks! --HistoryofIran (talk) 15:00, 28 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bots Newsletter, December 2021 edit

Bots Newsletter, December 2021

BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the eighth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Maintainers disappeared to parts unknown... bots awakening from the slumber of æons... hundreds of thousands of short descriptions... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

Our last issue was in August 2019, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do. Due to the vast quantity of things that have happened, the next few issues will only cover a few months at a time. This month, we'll go from September 2019 through the end of the year. I won't bore you with further introductions — instead, I'll bore you with a newsletter about bots.

Overall

  • Between September and December 2019, there were 33 BRFAs. Of these,  Y 25 were approved, and 8 were unsuccessful ( N2 3 denied,  ? 3 withdrawn, and   2 expired).

September 2019

Look! It's moving. It's alive. It's alive... It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!
  •  Y Monkbot 16, DannyS712 bot 60, Ahechtbot 6, PearBOT 3, Qbugbot 3 ·  N2 DannyS712 bot 5, PkbwcgsBot 24 ·  ? DannyS712 bot 61, TheSandBot 4
  • TParis goes away, UTRSBot goes kaput: Beeblebrox noted that the bot for maintaining on-wiki records of UTRS appeals stopped working a while ago. TParis, the semi-retired user who had previously run it, said they were "unlikely to return to actively editing Wikipedia", and the bot had been vanquished by trolls submitting bogus UTRS requests on behalf of real blocked users. While OAuth was a potential fix, neither maintainer had time to implement it. TParis offered to access to the UTRS WMFLabs account to any admin identified with the WMF: "I miss you guys a whole lot [...] but I've also moved on with my life. Good luck, let me know how I can help". Ultimately, SQL ended up in charge. Some progress was made, and the bot continued to work another couple months — but as of press time, UTRSBot has not edited since November 2019.
  • Article-measuring contest resumed: The list of Wikipedians by article count, which had lain dead for several years, was triumphantly resurrected by GreenC following a bot request.

October 2019

November 2019

Now you're thinking with portals.

December 2019

In the next issue of Bots Newsletter:
What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?

  • What happens when two bots want to clerk the same page?
  • What happens when an adminbot goes hog wild?
  • Will reFill ever get fixed?
  • What's up with ListeriaBot, anyway?
  • Python 3.4 deprecation? In my PyWikiBot? (It's more likely than you think!)

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the January 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

Bots Newsletter, January 2022 edit

Bots Newsletter, January 2022

BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the ninth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Vicious bot-on-bot edit warring... superseded tasks... policy proposals... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

After a long hiatus between August 2019 and December 2021, there's quite a bit of ground to cover. Due to the vastness, I decided in December to split the coverage up into a few installments that covered six months each. Some people thought this was a good idea, since covering an entire year in a single issue would make it unmanageably large. Others thought this was stupid, since they were getting talk page messages about crap from almost three years ago. Ultimately, the question of whether each issue covers six months or a year is only relevant for a couple more of them, and then the problem will be behind us forever.

Of course, you can also look on the bright side – we are making progress, and this issue will only be about crap from almost two years ago. Today we will pick up where we left off in December, and go through the first half of 2020.

Overall
In the first half of 2020, there were 71 BRFAs. Of these,  Y 59 were approved, and 12 were unsuccessful (with  N2 8 denied,  ? 2 withdrawn, and   2 expired).

January 2020

Yeah, you're not gonna be able to get away with this anymore.

February 2020

Speaking of WikiProject Molecular Biology, Listeria went wild in February

March 2020

April 2020

Listeria being examined

Issues and enquiries are typically expected to be handled on the English Wikipedia. Pages reachable via unified login, like a talk page at Commons or at Italian Wikipedia could also be acceptable [...] External sites like Phabricator or GitHub (which require separate registration or do not allow for IP comments) and email (which can compromise anonymity) can supplement on-wiki communication, but do not replace it.

May 2020

We heard you like bots, so we made a bot that reports the status of your bots, so now you can use bots while you use bots

June 2020

A partial block averted at the eleventh hour for the robot that makes Legos

Conclusion

  • What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?
  • Will Citation bot ever be set free to roam the project?
  • What's the deal with all those book links that InternetArchiveBot is adding to articles?
  • Should we keep using Gerrit for MediaWiki?
  • What if we had a day for bots to make cosmetic edits?

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the February 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

Translation request edit

Hello ZxxZxxZ, would you be able to translate a short article from Persian to English for me? It is on Mehrabad Airport and is at the bottom right corner of this PDF from the newspaper Iran. I had difficulty understanding the Google Translate version. Please feel free to skip the list of attendees ("the government board, parliamentarians, political representatives...") and the list of major components of the new building ("1- The main hall includes the office of domestic and foreign airlines..."). Sunnya343 (talk) 03:48, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, here it is:
"In Iran's new geopolitical conditions, Tehran needed to have three new airports.
The geopolitical conditions of Iran made Reza Shah's government to build three new airports in the capital city. Doshan Tappeh (Qajar hunting resort), Qaleh Morghi and Mehrabad District (the area that used to be the mahr of Ismat al-Doulah, daughter of Nasser al-Din Shah) were chosen to build the airport. Shortly after the construction of the airports at Doshan Tappeh and Qaleh Morghi, Mehrabad Airport was completed and the Pilot School was established and the Mehrabad Airport eventually became an international airport:
[...]
The total cost of the esatblishment of the Mehrabad Airport from 1326 (Solar Hijri) to this date amounted to 315 million Iranian rials, with 55 million Iranian rial paid by the Ministry of Finance and the remaining 260 million Iranian rial by the Plan and Budget Organization. The area of all the floors of the main building combined is 955.26 square meters and the total area of all buildings combined is 650.31 square meters [...] Kushesh Newspaper, Sunday, 19th Mordad 1337 [Solar Hijri]"
--Z 09:44, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for the translation! I appreciate how you included links to articles. Sorry to bother again, I just wanted to confirm that the article also says that Reza Shah cut the ribbon to inaugurate the new terminal on Tuesday, 14th Mordad? Unicode chart translation request edit

Hello. I maintain multilingual Wikimedia charts showing roadmaps to the various planes of the Unicode Standard.
I'm hoping you will provide Persian translations for me. (I noticed your user name on the Wikipedia:Translators available list.)
The specifics are at User:Drmccreedy/roadmap_multilingual.
Currently the Persian Unicode article uses the English charts.
Thank you for any help you can offer. DRMcCreedy (talk) 03:38, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi DRMcCreedy, I translated it here. Please note that the destination language is written in a right-to-left script, so it should look like this. Please notify me for a double-check after the generation of the photo. Thank you, Z 10:54, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the quick reply. I had to do some tweaks for LTR but I think it's good now. The easiest way for you to review the updated charts is by looking at User:Drmccreedy/roadmap_test_page#Persian_(fa). After you've reviewed the new charts I'll update the Persian page to use them. Also, I forgot to ask for a translation for the TIP file description: "A graphical representation of Unicode's Tertiary Ideographic Plane (TIP)." It doesn't affect the charts, just the file summary, but it's helpful. Thank you. DRMcCreedy (talk) 01:05, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Translation edit

Hi ZxxZxxZ, I hope you don't mind my asking for help with another article in Persian. I was wondering if you could translate the four sentences in this article that begin with the following (I tried pasting the entire sentences here but the formatting wasn't right):

  1. در آن روزگار نیروی هوایی and the following sentence
  2. در سال 1326
  3. در سال 1351

Thank you for your time, Sunnya343 (talk) 01:59, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi again,
At that time, the Iranian Air Force decided to establish a new school (in addition to the pilot technical schools and observation departments) near Mehrabad area, with the aim of training more pilots and satisfying the ever-increasing need of the Air Force. Three people with the rank of third lieutenant, a Belgian pilot teacher, as well as three skilled pilots named Buschen, Formul and Schwarz, after being employed in the Iranian Air Force on 15th Esfand 1314 [Solar Hijri], officially started their work at the Mehrabad Pilot Training School. On 23rd Farvardin 1316 [Solar Hijri], six pilots were graduated in the first program of Pilot Training Art. The main aircraft used in this school for training the pilots of the Iranian Air Force was the Tiger Moth, used for teaching basic pilot training.

Pahlavi script edit

Hi, could you provide original Pahlavi script in Parvīz? Thanks a lot.-- Carnby (talk) 20:30, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Carnby, as far as I know the word is attested only in Book Pahlavi, which has been embedded in Unicode only recently and I'm not familiar with the relevant characters. Z 10:47, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Persian source searches edit

Hi ZxxZxxZ! You've volunteered at Wikipedia:Translators available a bit ago. I'm wondering if you'd be willing to do a search for Sajad Mehrabi (سجاد محرابیI think) and Shahameh Dizaei in Persian to see if they'd meet WP:GNG. Both currently does not have any reliable sources providing significant coverage and I'm starting to think it might from paid/COI editing. Thanks in advance! Persian miniature enigma edit

Court scene.

Hi ZzzZzzZ! Can I ask for your help? I cannot find a reference for this image. It is claimed as "Fatimid" (but this is extremely unlikely in my opinion, the style is more like 14th century Ilkhanid or Jalayarid) and currently appears in the Arabic miniature article. Can you confirm that the language of the text in the miniature is Persian, rather than Arabic? I would personally bet for a version of the Great Mongol Shahnameh. Any thoughts? Any RS reference for this image? पाटलिपुत्र (Pataliputra) (talk) 09:57, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi पाटलिपुत्र, yes, the language is Persian, an excerpt from Abu'l-Ma'ali Nasrallah's Kalila wa Dimna, final part of the chapter باب الملک و البراهمة. I can not comment on the artistic style, though. I can only tell you that the Persian words consistently use the so-called dotted dhal (dhal-i mu'jama) which was common in earlier forms of New Persian. --Z 11:20, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much ZzzZzzZ, this is very informative! So I guess we can safely say this a Persian-language illustrated manuscript, and an extract from the last Chapter of the Kalila wa Dimna' last chapter "The King's son and his companions" (باب الملک و البراهمة)... Would you have the ability to translate the sentences on the page, so that I can track the precise location in the King's chapter (p.354-366)? As for the date, the first known Persian-language illustrated manuscript is the Varka and Golshah, attributable to Konya in Central Anatolia c.1250.[1][2] All other Persian language illustrated manuscript start with the Mongol period (around 1280 for the earliest, described in the article "Persian miniature")... So this one necessarily dates to circa 1300 or after. Is this date coherent in your opinion with the usage of the dotted dhal? Based on all this, I would tend to favour Ilkhanid or Jalayarid, or rather unlikely northern Indian Delhi Sultanate... पाटलिपुत्र (Pataliputra) (talk) 12:15, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I did not mean the last chapter, rather the chapter The King and the Brahmans, the very last sentences. I've added the original Persian to the image's page. We know that the dotted dhal was obsolete in certain variants of Persian (e.g. that of Ghazni) after a certain period. For further analysis of the language and a more precise dating, I'd like to ask User:Behaafarid and User:Curryfranke to comment, hopefully they are still active. --Z 13:39, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm having a hard time trying to find an English translation of "The King and the Brahmans".... is it the same chapter as "The story of the wise Bilar", where Brahmans also do appear?... Would you have a link? I also tried a Google translation of your Persian text on the Commons page, but it's probably quite a mess... पाटलिपुत्र (Pataliputra) (talk) 16:11, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi everyone, there is an old German article on the question when the dotted dhal (= 3rd person singular in -dh) became -d. Fritz Meier's aussprachefragen des älteren neupersisch (sic; “pronunciation problems of older new persian”) of 1981 is a very good source for the sound changes of early New Persian. But it's proprietary. I don't have online access at the moment and need to go to the university library to read it. Please have some patience. --Curryfranke (talk) 16:14, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
That would be a great help. In the meanhile, I created a short article on the subject, Dotted dhal. --Z 18:08, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the confusion. Yes, it has this character called Bilar in it as well as Brahmans. In the Persian version it is two chapters prior to the last one that you've just mentioned: "The King's son and his companions". Z 17:54, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@ZxxZxxZ: Great! So here is the last page of the "The King and the Brahmans" aka "The story of the wise Bilar" story: p.338, p.338. Would it be possible for you to tell me which lines exactly seem to correspond to the text in the manuscript? Thank you! पाटलिपुत्र (Pataliputra) (talk) 19:54, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Those ar apparently translations from the Arabic version. As you can appreciate the Persian and Arabic variants are different, I don't know if the Persian version has actually been translated into English or not. It roughly corresponds to the page 338 that you linked. Z 15:55, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@ZxxZxxZ: Thank you! Sorry to bother you, but would you have an approximate translation of the three lines of text on the manuscript (I had tried Google Translate, but it seems quite unsatisfactory...). It also seems to me that the note in the upper left corner looks like a date, but I might be wrong... पाटलिपुत्र (Pataliputra) (talk) 16:16, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I've just added one. Z 16:18, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Shams al-Din Juvayni enigma edit

Supplément persan 1113, fol. 202r Link to full manuscript

Hello ZxxZxxZ. Can I ask you for another piece of Persian expertise? This image is supposed to be a depicition of Shams al-Din Juvayni with the Mongol ruler Tekuder (used in the Shams al-Din Juvayni article). Would you be able to confirm if the guest is indeed Shams al-Din Juvayni? Best regards पाटलिपुत्र (Pataliputra) (talk) 17:30, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the page is indeed about the reign of Tekuder but there is no information regarding the illustration depicting those men. --Z 19:00, 24 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have sent you a note about a page you started edit

Hello, ZxxZxxZ. Thank you for your work on Dotted dhal. Moriwen, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

I wonder if it wouldn't make most sense to merge this into the main Ḏāl article, at least for the time being. Thoughts? Are you expecting to expand it substantially in the nearish future?

To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Moriwen}}. Please remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

Moriwen (talk) 15:23, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dear User:Moriwen, yes, it is going to be expanded in the near future. Out colleague (see #Persian miniature enigma above) is currently trying to access the relevant literature. --Z Z 16:25, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
