WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Reid,iain james (submissions), tiger from Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Czar (submissions) and Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. @Prathamprakash29: I removed two of the categories you added, because they are redundant, and the social media - we only list official websites when they exist. I changed the infobox to "private" because that's what the text and now one of the categories say. We avoid inline links and you already had the link to Wikisource for the school song. But are you sure you have the right to surrender all copyright to the words of the school song by putting it on Wikisource?? The school is both - private as well as public. When there is social media templates like google+ and facebook template available. Then why don't you allow it to be shown on infobox. It shouldn't be there either! If there is an official website, we use that. If there is not, we list one social media site instead - they are second best, and the school websites have links to them for anyone who is interested. Remember, this isn't a directory. Ostrich

I noticed your reversion of the regional categories. It's been the unofficial practice for some time to aggregate locations for widespread species to avoid interminable lists of countries/states/provinces. A widespread species like Osprey or Peregrine Falcon could have 100+ country cats alone, even without, say, 50 US states, British counties, Canadian provinces etc. Up to you, just making the point that there is a logic to cat removal Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:06, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

@Jimfbleak: I've never seen this done before - I suggest you make a talk page entry about it if you haven't already. I have the page watchlisted because it attracts vandalism, but it has recently been expanded by several very knowledgeable people. This is almost entirely done through the Wikiprojects; they assess both importance and quality. For WikiProject India, add the school to the list here. For WikiProject Schools, add it to the list here. Looking at WikiMapia#Licensing, I suspect not, because it would be derivative of Google Maps. That is presumably why you were recommended on your talk page to use Open Streetmap. But ask here. Remember to sign your post using ~~~~ - there should be an image to click if you don't have that symbol on the device you are using, or you can copy it from here and paste it in '-). Biography standards

Hi. The change I made is not a preference on my part; it is the recognised standard for biography articles (see WP:OPENPARAGRAPH. Many, many people get this wrong and I am having to make the fix frequently. For that reason, I feel that a brief edit summary should be adequate. Source was already in use; I moved the "saved by angels" to the end para and cited source again for good measure, but I can't see a good way to work in the stained glass windows, sorry. One source that we are already using, I forget which one, says that the church had been landmarked by the city before this happened; that could be put in if you can find it again, and you could put the stained glass windows there. But neither is really about the museum. And be careful, there is also an Episcopal church in the city dedicated to the same saint - we have a pic of it on Commons, but none of the Angel Museum church. He does, and so do other Swedish Christians, presumably :-) I think it makes more sense to cover the church under the parish, unless it is sensational architecturally, rather than having a separate article on it as the Swedish Wikipedia does. (This is different from Uppsala, for example!) But I am finding it hard to be enthusiastic about the vicars, I must admit. The Swedish wiki can do that, it is local notability. Just silly. But if you want to go for ANY Swedish parish, just choes the one that has bishops. Göteborg, Lund, Upsala, Stockholm. Upsala parish is the Swedish archbishop's parish. Ask him to do that one instead. But .. who cares. That's what seems to have happened here. At least he picked an old enough reference book that there's no copyright violation. (And then I got about 15 minutes of break and found people had already linked him to the notability policy without explaining the concept.) So I feel a bit sad about it all. On the contrary, Swedish parishes should have articles (the historic versions with roots stretching back to the 12th century, not the parishes of the current state-separated Church of Sweden that are rapidly declining in number and increasing in size and have little stability of any sort), while places such as Huggle should probably just be listed within the parish articles. But it all depends on somebody caring to do it properly.

As for vicars, some have done significant things in addition to their vicaring (e.g. Pehr Osbeck) or have gone on to more exalted positions, such as bishoprics, but I don't see any of that among the Gunnilbo lot. Perhaps it was a poor parish that never attracted the most ambitious or gifted individuals. (tps) I don't know if I got it right, but I estimate there's about 2,500 parishes listed in that pdf. In England there are 10,479 civil parishes, and about 12,000 Church of England parishes (Parish (Church of England) gives a figure of more than 15,600 for 1835). Hafspajen asked for comments on this, but I don't think I have much to add. I wouldn't bother with parish articles myself, but neither am I opposed. The comment about articles on obscure footballers (not to mention cricketers) kinda sums up the issue.
And, no, I'm not an admin and never will be. Sv.wiki is likely aware that I would go rouge in a matter of days, unblocking "silly" anons and being a general nuisance. That, and I actually believe WP:IGNORE ≠ WP:IDONTLIKEIT. Besides, I'm too on-and-off lazy to be of any administrative use.

Thanks for stopping by. I'm actually one of the laziest, most feckless admins here, not to mention a technical incompetent. Oh well :-) I feel sorry for the editor in question, but the ball is in his court at this point - whether he starts editing on sv. instead or helps us out over here. I think the dust has mostly settled at Gunnilbo parish (unless my linguistic guesses on the talk page were totally off), but the biographies of vicars and curates (I'm guessing that's more accurate than chaplains in this case) are all gone. Gunnilbo parish looks pretty nice, actually!

My personal view is that anyone who can make it on English Wikipedia is better off editing here. Quality assessment on en.wiki eats sv.wiki for breakfast. It's easier to just write decent articles here and then simply translate your own prose (if the Swedish watchdogs allow it, that is). Though it might be different when it comes to parishes. That's kinda like sv.wiki's equivalent of WP:OMT and video game articles, ei the topic that has the most manpower (and I do mean manpower).

In your recent note to

User_talk:David_Hedlund, you stated that in providing citations, one should give "title and the publication, and preferably also the publication date (or retrieval date if none) and the author's name". I did not want to seem disrespectful at that page, but I would ask (strongly encourage) you to return to that page and provide him with WP help/policy links that give him instruction on the proper way to offer full citations. His edits span technical (Unix related) to current events, so something very general is in order. Note that in the venues where I edit, your description of an acceptable minimal citation would not be considered acceptable at all; Author name is always required, as are publication date and page numbers, and volume, year, and publisher where applicable. Why set the bar low, and then leave later editors to add , , , , or tags when something something in the article proves? (Tags exist because expectations exist.) We have a plethora of articles where less than that has been provided, and many sources have no author. All the reflinks tool does is add a title. So I was trying to both cover all eventualities and to not overwhelm him :-) The guidance pages also tend to push citation templates, which can be overwhelming in their complexity - and variety. There is in fact no one "proper way", even if using templates. Feel free to jump in there with more assistance; but beware of giving the impression there's one preferred format, and also - from the sample I looked at, he tends to use less than stellar sources, and identifying where they come from is thus the most important thing. I saw the video to cite sources, and there was an Edit Source page where you then went to the Named References page. There is no edit source page in the cite tab or above, and no named references, even through I named them. Many errors from the error check. I get confused very easily, and the person who said he'd help me has not. I read all the material you gave. The editor said it was not encyclopedic enough. I tried my best, truly. What would you do? I have no idea whether being a Eurovision host in itself confers notability, but I suspected it might be an honour conferred on people who have reached a certain level of distinction, and luckily I found enough reliable sources to substantiate that that was the case (I was afraid the material would not be online, or that Google would refuse to let me see it, although I found some sweet fan pages that I of course couldn't use) - and now we have an article on an accomplished woman and the readers can decide for themselves about the significance of the Eurovision gig. I just looked at the article. I was astounded at how good it was. The only thing I did was to add the Allgero Open to All named reference where it said [citation needed]. It is so much more professional looking, I was astounded. Who did this? I asked myself. So it was your talent. Thank you. I have no words to thank you.

Oh yes, he's notable. All his non-Symphony of the New World papers are at the Lincoln Center branch of the NYPL. The SONW was the last thing he did before he died. Everyone seems to only be interested in that but there is so much more. He did Broadway with Lenny Bernstein, who was a good friend. Zero Mostel was one of his best friends. I have paintings by him all over my house. In the 1940's he gave painter Frank Neal a loan to start a tray business. Frank Neal was a great painter. I have paintings by him all over my house. Original oils.

He was a child prodigy, giving his first town hall recital when he was 9. Then he played with the NYA Orchestra. I will give you a link to a sound file of him playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, third movement, from that time. My mother saved the glass records. Then there was the ballet. He was with ABT. He conducted the premiere of Balanchine's Theme and Variations with Alicia Alonso and Igor Youskevitch. They were very good friends. There was a tour he did with them with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Fernando Alonso had slept with a corps member. Alicia was so furious, she threw him out of bed, and he had to go sleep with my father. My mother slept with Alicia.

At the Lincoln Center branch, there are letters from her. Like Coco before Chanel, there is Alicia before Alonso. She was stuck in Argentina. Two dictators before Castro, the Cuban government used to give her $5000 here, $2000 there. So she wrote these letters, and they are extraordinary. Then Fidel gave her $100,000, and we went to Cuba. I have photos of the audience that filled the stadium when the Ballet Nacional de Cuba first premiered after the Revolution. I grew up in Castro's elite in Cuba from 1959 - 1963. He was the ballet's first conductor, and I have pictures of that, too.

But in between that, there were the McCarthy hearings. My father conducted the Symphony of the Air, and they accused him of spreading Communist propaganda on their tour of Japan. He never went on that tour. So he sued the State Dept. Zero was a co-defendant. They won. And the Lincoln Center library has those papers. Thats where he and Zero became friends. His testimony in front of McCarthy is great because he basically told them to go to hell. But another interesting thing about that trial is that his lawyer was Leonard Boudin. (He used to come visit us in Cuba and bring me chocolates :-). Leonard Boudin is Kathy Boudin's father, Kathy Boudin, the weatherman. What happened to her killed Leonard. Zero gave my father a painting of a clown with an ace of spaces coming out of a blow tube. That was a present for him when they won the trial. Zero took the 21st amendment -- the repeal to prohibition. ha ha. My father took the first amendment.

He was a great man, a great musician, and it is an honor to be his daughter. It is difficult for me to write about the SONW because I watched him die from 13 1/2 to 15, and all the SONW means to me is death. I'm trying to write it for everyone else, to whom it meant so much more.

I am going to NYC July 8 - 15. I will be going to the Lincoln Center branch to take pictures of many documents. Here are two, and here is the sound file. There is a lot more to his life than the obit.

I can't imagine that I contradicted myself. I'm sure I said "one of" and indicated that the material should be, for example, cotton, linen, or wool. It is CRYSTAL-CLEAR (per the Torah) that only ONE material is to be used: indeed, in ANY sort of clothing, the proscription applies.

However, thank you for rewriting what appeared unclear. I shall examine it and tell you what I think (momentary pause) . . . I did look at it, and you added an extraneous "that," which also destroyed parallelism: so much for your "correction" of your previous victim after mocking his grammar (I'm sure you'll presently complain about my erudite use of a colon just <--- there).

Funny how said victim (LOL) wrote about "draugr": he must have watched the same two-hour special about zombies on H2 that I just watched last night! I think I'll add the proper pronunciation as a lagniappe to Wikipedia users. FYI, 'au' is a diphthong that sounds the same as 'öj', to wit, 'ö' (like an extended 'ur' in 'purpose', sans 'r') plus 'j' (viz., the interpretation of 'j' in most Germanic languages, akin to English consonantal 'y').

I have told the editor who originally tagged it that in addition to using the wrong tag, he tagged it much too soon. However, I advise you to accept Nick's offer and have it restored where you can continue to work on it out of main space and then ask for it to be moved back - somewhere like Draft:AR.Freeflight or User:A.Minkowiski/AR.Freeflight. Lotta Lotass and the Swedish Literature Bank

This is something that may interest you: Author Lotta Lotass, a member of the Swedish Academy and known in Wikipedia as User:Lotta Lotass, posted an article on the Swedish Literature Bank (Litteraturbanken in Swedish. It didn't take long before it was speedily deleted as "Unambiguous advertising or promotion". It is a non-profit project sponsored by the most prestigious cultural institutions in Sweden. Sources are out there when searched for under the Swedish name. (BTW, Språkbanken has also been deleted, but that was back in 2011.)

Somebody needs to tell Lotta Lotass to write about truly important topics, such as professional wrestlers or local American radio stations. As the editor who tagged the article for speedy deletion, I think I should explain what happened here. The first version of the article, the one that was speedily deleted, did not contain any credible claim of significance, did not have any reliable sources and was written in an overly promotional style. As such, it fully qualified for the speedy deletion under both WP:G11 and WP:A7 criteria. If anybody has some reasons to say that the article did not qualify for deletion under G11 and A7, please say so. Talking about how this organization is important, and how it is sponsored by "prestigious cultural institutions" is totally pointless. The article was not deleted because the subject is not important; it was deleted because it did not explain why the subject is important, nor did it cite any sources to prove the subject is notable. Wikipedia has very strict criteria for speedy deletion and this article fully qualified at that moment. I think the remark by User:Hafspajen made here is very rude. Articles on Nobel Prize and Swedish parliament are both well referenced and both clearly explain the significance of their subjects, so the comparison is senseless. It was deleted as promotional and containing copyvio. However, I hope you can now see notability demonstrated? All's well that ends well, I hope ... however, I would say to be careful with projects of this nature, with backers like this (and missions as non-commercial as this). My suspicion is that you were misled by words like "classics" - which refer to the literary canon. You may also want to look at my request for undeletion at Bbb23's talk page. this is the kind of thing that makes me glad they made me an admin - being able to see it as well as to look for sources in Swedish helped a great deal in sorting this out. Of course, I agree that it is all OK now. The article is well sourced and not promotional any more. I just wanted to say that it is rude to attack me for doing new pages patrol according to rules. I did nothing wrong, I did not breach any Wikipedia policy. The WP:Burden of notability and verifiability lies with the editor who creates the article, not with me. The fact that the author of the article is well known person has nothing to do with the quality of the article because the Notability is not inherited. And the fact the organization is non-profitable is also irrelevant per WP:NPROF. I think I deserve at least an apology from Hafspajen for attacking me without any evidence to prove that I have not followed WP:CSD in the case of this article. Also, although quite reasonable, that's an essay - and it's about notability. It's possible that I am just being blinded by the likely notability (a raft of high-powered learned organizations are doing a project similar to Project Runeberg, but tied in with modern scholarship ...); and I can of course go over to sv.wikipedia and see their fuller account. But I admit freely, I don't do New Page Patrol for the same reason I don't review at Articles for Creation; I'm kind of tender-hearted about articles, and my first instinct is to find sources to show notability. From my perspective, all I did was that, plus the expansion that that permitted, plus summarizing where the original editor had (accidentally?) copied a passage. As I said, you did nothing wrong, actually you made very useful step by saving the article and editing it to add reliable sources and to remove copyvio. I completely support your efforts regarding this article. I tagged it for speedy deletion under WP:A7, as it really had no indication of importance. Deleting admin added WP:G11 (promotion) and copyright issues. I guess the reason he called the article promotional is that it had no reliable sources, only source given was the official web site of the subject, which the article paraphrased. Article with no credible claim of significance and with text copied from official web site is usually considered spam (as indicated in WP:ADMASQ). But, again, I only tagged the article for WP:A7. Hi there Y-daughter, thanks for your work on Swedish Literature Bank. Looking good! The "copyedited by scholars" bit is a little unclear to me, though. I appreciate that there are some secondary texts in the bank — "vederhäftiga översikter och presentationer"[2] — but surely the main content is older literary works, which nobody's likely to copyedit. ("Lemme see, I don't think Selma Lagerlöf put that very well... I'll just modernise the syntax and shorten it a bit.") Are you sure it shouldn't be "proofread"? Or that scholars have added explanatory notes or something? Copyediting on Wikipedia, at least, is a pretty radical process. Just check out Central University of Haryana before and after User:RexxS copyedited it… :-) I assume the source is Swedish? Bishonen | talk 10:45, 23 June 2014 (UTC).

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad I was able to help with this one, especially since it's been a rotten few days in other respects. As to "copyedited" vs. "proofread", that may at least in part the result of my usage - I don't make much of a distinction. To me "proofread" comes from the milieu of book publishing and "copyedit" from the milieu of newspapering and both describe rather less than what in a university context would be called "editing". I may be wrong about that, and it's also entirely possible that I made a mistake in translation! But the source is the one cited at the end of the next sentence, the Dagens Nyheter article, specifically this bit comparing it to Projekt Runeberg: "ett ideellt projekt som har 1 825 böcker i sitt arkiv. Fast bara ett femtiotal av dem är helt genomarbetade och korrekturlästa. Det står öppet för vem som helst att hjälpa till med jobbet att läsa igenom. På Litteraturbanken sköts samma uppgifter av litteraturvetare". There's also a statement on their own website about the preparation of the actual text. So go ahead and make it more accurate. (talk page stalker) "Copy-editing" changes the text, sometimes dramatically, since it often involves shuffling pieces of text around, and even adding or deleting content, while "proofreading" only involves correcting obvious typos and minor grammatical mistakes, without changing the text. So they're not in any way synonymous. Scanned and digitized text is always proofread since the digitized copies always include lots of "typos" introduced by the scanning software, especially in scanned copies of older books (if you look at "raw" scans of digitized books at "Projekt Runeberg" you'll find that there are lots of scanning software introduced "typos" in them...). "Scanning software introduced 'typos'" is another way of saying "OCR-errors". That's what they're correcting at Projekt Runeberg, and since OCR-errors are unavoidable in all scans of printed books, particularly older ones, they must have lots of them at Swedish Literature Bank too. The problem with letting anyone correct the errors, like at Projekt Runeberg, is that there's always the risk of having someone introduce new errors, from simple misreadings of words to deliberate vandalism, which I'm sure is why the Swedish Literature Bank chose to let only professionals do the job. I'd like to at least take some of the sourced material from the French article and import it here, but even though I speak French, it's tough: very technical and rather odd stuff. Maybe you could do some work on it? Or someone else you know? The creator of the article is appreciative that the article wasn't deleted, but it doesn't sound like he wants to or is equipped to work on the article himself (I suggested it to him on his talk page). They transliterate it Shudankodo and they do translate it "collective action"; I notice the Japanese article has "See also"s including school physical education, after-school clubs, parades, and marches. And that we don't have an article on precision marching, which this is a variant of. This and this might be usable to establish notability; here The Telegraph covers the original viral video in 2010. WikiCup 2014 June newsletter

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. He's right, it's too close. Paragraph beginning "However, as Radzinsky demonstrates, Rasputin was more complex and more substantial than the myths that grew up around him." and the one after that. I suggest you summarize the point, with a footnote mentioning both the review article and the book it's reviewing, then post on the talk page about what happened. I suggest you find a better place for that link to point to; look at the history of the section it points to, there may be material that was put in a different article. As for Rasputin, I am really really not someone who should edit Fool for Christ. You may be able to get some ideas from the actual Rasputin article, or there may be someone else who can help you out, but my recommendation would be to summarise - half the length you have above, or less. That's the easiest way to avoid close paraphrasing, and you can easily find other sources if there is more you want to say about Rasputin. I appreciate the point about the history at the main article about him - that is a shame, because he is indeed a major, much studied example of this phenomenon. @Stone2ypr: I see you have now removed the PROD. I found you had added a new section that was way too close to the wording of the source article - it is advisable to not copy-paste text into Wikipedia even as a first step to paraphrasing, because it makes it far too easy to not change it enough. Summarize it. The added reference helps, but not much, because that news source does not look very reliable. As I said earlier, the article is weak on sourcing; my estimation is that he just squeaks by under the general notability guideline, but another article about him in a newspaper or magazine would make a world of difference. I tend to agree with Logical Cowboy that he does not meet the standard for entertainers. It is likely that the article will now be AfD'd. If that happens, keep calm, make an argument at the discussion, and search for that one additional good source. The suggestion that you have a conflict of interest is separate; we all start out somewhere, usually with a topic we have an interest in, and even if you do have a conflict of interest, the article should be judged on its own merits. Hmm. I suspect he may consider it more criticism than help, and be partly right. My motivation was to set him right on MOS and more importantly on copyvio - it damages the encyclopedia when someone copies text into articles, and over time it can cause a lot of work for others when someone misunderstands the conventions on capitalization and overlinking. But let me also put it to you: do you have any reason to suspect he's being paid to edit that particular article, which was started by someone else? If not, then it would be completely inappropriate to not interpret his edits there as intended to help the article writer and Wikipedia. In fact just the kind of thing he said in that response that he largely does here. Please don't let's create a distinction between COI editors and others so rigid that we consider all edits by those in the former class through the lens of that suspicion. He has not made any disclosure on his user page, talk page, or edit summaries as required by the TOU. Yet he describes himself as a "paid editor," which to me suggests multiple paid edits. He also refers here [6] to taking on multiple "jobs." Please note that is not about me or my assumptions of good or bad faith. This is about following the TOU. As the situation stands, I think he is still in violation of the TOU. We need to see a list of which of his edits are paid. That is what the TOU means in terms of disclosing "any contribution." I thought of doing that, truth to tell, but other than claims of being an admin or a bureaucrat (and those userboxes have "verify" buttons), I can't see the harm in allowing people to decorate their user pages with qualifications they don't have. Some pictors - painters have a bit sick minds. And he is a little bit like that, I tried to select the best paintings making the gallery, that are HIS best - but I could have done a much-much creepier gallery too. This one for example, Egon Schiele - I really started to feel weird after working on this article. The guy is crazy - I realized that while poking around there. This guy, was on the contary, Tadao Ando, he made me feel serene, balaced and refereshed, calm and I felt like flying. Weird, no? It has to do with the inexplicable thing only an artwork can -tell - somehow. And in the begining I thought Tadao was a lot of boring cement, while Schiele. . . - I liked the colours and the lines. I have seen the commentary on the Wentbridge talk page, but it is overwhelming, and I fear that I am on a time delay which doesn't help. Also, yes, I have all of the correct citation details as I have copy-pasted them from the original thesis. And yes, I had considered adding information to the Robin Hood page itself, as this is an obvious action, but until today the page was semi-protected and thus I was prohibited from accessing it.

In particular, I note that BB23 feels that the information relating to Robin Hood does not belong on the Wentbridge page. I must strongly contest this point. The original Robin Hood sources, which date from the fifteenth century in the form of medieval ballads, relate Robin Hood's activities to the Went Valley, and in particular to Wentbridge, and not to the county of Nottinghamshire. This is a point of interest which is accepted by all professional historians (see Sir J.C. Holt 'Robin Hood'). The Yorkshire / Nottinghamshire Robin Hood heritage issue is a highly controversial topic in northern England and therefore is often spoken of. In consequence, Wakefield City Council has itself placed a plaque on the bridge over the River Went in the heart of Wentbridge to commemorate this detail. Therefore, the Robin Hood information that I have posted is of the utmost importance to the Wentbridge page, for it is the one thing, above all others, that the locale is known for. Staszek Lem has pointed to repetitions and where these occur they can be edited.

The first paragraph on 'Geography and Topography' and the final paragraph appear to be popular. In particular, Staszek Lem has indicated that most of the additions to 'Geography and Topgraphy' relate to the locality, which is what I had believed. And, strictly speaking, the second to last paragraph, which is properly cited, is important because it explains the local history of the region, and how this led to the origin of the Robin Hood legend. It is indeed difficult to write four lines on the topic of Robin Hood and believe that I have kept this to a bare minimum.

Not four lines in my view, but much shorter than it was. (I was thinking especially of NeilN's comment at 00:25, but I see that conversation is continuing there; they're trying to help you out by assessing what should be put back.) I appreciate the time delay thing - in view of the time where I presume you are, I thought you had gone to bed. There's no big rush and although it's not late where I am, it's very hot and I'm making stupid mistakes. Otherwise I would have offered to edit the article myself to incorporate a brief summary. That offer stands, but after I've had some sleep would be a better idea :-) If you're amenable - and you should note that I will condense and cut a lot - then please look up the page numbers and add them afterwards? On the other hand it's possible someone else will do it for us - in that case, again, please add those page numbers.

You have been registered for long enough and made enough edits that your account should now be 'autoconfirmed', which makes it possible for you to edit semi-protected articles. However, since at Robin Hood you would most logically add a reference to your own work as well as the third-party references, I still recommend you propose that edit at Talk:Robin Hood first. (The conflict of interest policy, to which I referred above.) In terms of reorganising the article and adding references to others' work, you can do that per WP:BOLD, but if you get reverted, you should then discuss on the talk page rather than reinstating your edit(s). This is bold - revert - discuss, our recommended procedure.

A small point that someone else has made: we sign here on talk pages using the software, because it provides a link to the person's user and/or talk pages, which is convenient for the person responding, especially when the user name differs from the real name, as yours and mine do. This is done either by typing 4 tildes, ~~~~, or by clicking the symbol that should appear above the edit screen - either a scribble or a pencil, depending on the settings you have enabled.

@Siggasonswein: I've done a little tiny bit of tidying up at Robin Hood: I fixed the oak picture so that it shows (you had one too few closing square brackets) and I removed "Sir" and "eminent" because both are contrary to our house style: no honorifics, avoid praise words as non-neutral. Keep it utterly dry. I note that the article already refers in several places to J. C. Holt's theory, so there is definitely further condensing and combining to be done. And a small typographical point: use straight inverted commas and apostrophes if you can, rather than the slanted ones.

You're now getting into working with the other editors quite well, so if you prefer, go ahead and put back that little bit of material at Wentbridge. Again, I would not personally make the new Robin Hood material there as short as four lines - maybe one or two brief paragraphs. A favor

I'm contacting you because I see you edited the documentation for {{shy}} the other day. For almost a year I've been in a bizarre dispute with another editor who insists that shy only operates when the word in question is longer than the entire available line width i.e. the word is wider than the browser window (so to speak -- as in the wockawocka example) -- apparently his configuration is such that the more usual breaking of words for aesthetic reasons doesn't happen for him, so he insisted that it doesn't happen for anyone, and that I don't understand how shy works. This wouldn't matter except that he keeps accusing me of inserting shy in articles in order to erect a "markup minefield", "locking down" the articles so that others will be unable to edit them, I guess because the shy template is so fearsome. For a while it will seem he's found some other preoccupation, but then he pops up every once in a while to make this accusation again (along with many others -- he's really a great example of the Dunning-Kruger effect).

As you've seen I've made some changes to the documentation to clear this up, but I fear that at some some random point in the future he'll accuse me of corrupting the documentation as part of my evil plan. (It's really been a rough ride with him these last few months.) So I was wondering if, to the extent you feel competent to do so, you might comment at Template talk:Shy (currently a redlink, BTW) confirming the changes I've made. I don't want to name this other editor or point you to our conversations, unless you really want that, because he'll accuse me of making a personal attack on him. Quick reply, must get ready for work ... I don't really feel competent to do so, but I do feel your expansion of the explanation is helpful. Of course I went there to find out what it was :-) Since people now view the encyclopedia - and edit - on devices with a huge variety of window width, and some people haven't fully realized this, I believe that's part of the issue; part may also be the point in the documentation that browsers vary, some ignoring the markup entirely. I do notice two discussions at WT:MOS in mid-2013, both coming down on the side of minimizing use of the template, and a follow-up in December 2013 where someone was pointed to the resulting guidance on soft hyphens in the MOS. That suggests there are several editors with this concern, and I'm not sure why you didn't post there making the point about differing browsers. Will think further, sorry, out of time. Jeanne d'Aragon or Isabel de Requesens; Raphael or Giulio Romano?

Here a last question: Why is this that there are so many different versions and colours on this picture. [14] and [15], [16] Surely some oxonian have seen this picture and knows how it looks like. Also some states that it is one person, and some -an other. Lower down on this site it [17] gives two names - that it is 2013 Jeanne d'Aragon - the other down the page if you click a lot on + button = Isabel de Requesens - but besides it is Jeanne d'Aragon, 2013 - now which is the correct one? And here an other Louvre site show something again completely different. And I have seen this picture in art books - rather looking like in my nomination. Jeanne d'Aragon by Raphael gets 491 000 google hits, while Isabel de Requesens Rafael gets 26 800 google hits. What's up? Hafspajen (talk) 02:44, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

They've changed the analysis of who it depicts; see your second link, which is the Lessing and Pomarède book: "Portrait of Dona Isabel de Requesens, Lady Viceroy of Naples, formerly known as Portrait of Jeanne d’Aragon". Also some experts plainly think it is by Giulio Romano with Raphael maybe having helped (your 4th link). The thing to do would be to look at the latest scholarly work on the painting and find out what the current state of thinking is - maybe there is disagreement, maybe scholarly consensus has changed. (Do we have an article on the painting in any Wikipedia, and does it summarise the situation?) As to the colours, I don't have the eyes to speak on that; sometimes the newer photographic technologies produce quite different colours, sometimes it's because the painting has been cleaned/restored. Most of the material related to the political party to which he belongs and its activities mention Esther Arunga and Joseph Hellon, but treat Timberlake superficially and only in passing. Yes, I've been wondering whether it should be AfD'd. However, there are a not inconsiderable number of tabloid-style and blog mentions, some of which refer to him as "mysterious". The article currently has lots of references relating to his wife, Esther Arunga, which give a flavour of this - and one passing mention of the death of one of their three children, which is of course all over such sources. (I note with interest that that mention is an attack on the newspaper cited; the reference is a broken link but is one of those I found. I rev-deleted 2 edits by an IP a month or two ago and wondered what reliable sources said.) I think it would be kept on grounds of GNG. Also there is a powerful argument on grounds of avoiding entrenched bias. But IMO in view of what you say plus BLP concerns related to his wife - and parents - the article should be cut right down. Do you want to do that, or should I? I know nothing whatsoever about Kenyan politics, or Australian politics for that matter, plus might well not get to it for a few days, but you've done a lot of work on it already so if you would prefer me to do it, say the word. It seems that the sequence is as follows: Arunga (the wife) is halfway notable as a TV and radio anchor. She joins Hellon in a weird sort of political-religious movement (the "Finder of God"). Arunga then meets Timberlake, they get married. They're arrested for allegedly belonging to a cult (along with a bunch of other people), both do some time in prison. They have a falling out with Hellon and the wife's family. They make bail, leave Kenya by way of the UAE, and up in Australia where Timberlake creates his political party (which realistically exists only on the internet) and is now apparently doing low-level campaign work for an Australian MP. And yeah, one of their kids died. But if we look carefully at the sources, the reliable ones, the "story" seems to be consistently about Arunga and Hellon, not Timberlake. For example, look at this and this. Impressive coverage at first glance, but both articles are written by the same person, a "stringer" in Scotland. Everything else is self-generated or very tabloid-ish and again, goes back to the wife's notability and their association with Hellon. The man has never held political office, so he fails WP:POL. And GNG by osmosis though his wife? Not sure that works. I'm already knee-deep into this, so let me finish up stubbing that mess to the bare minimum we can actually use in terms of verifiability and then we'll see if it merits an AFD. No problem. A correction (because I'm learning more): The PlaCenta party was created by all three (Timberlake, Hellon and Aruga) before their falling out, and not later. And it is as far as I can tell actually a registered political party in Kenya. And Hellon did at one point either run for president, or intended to, under that party. A lot of the references about both of them are pretty negative; possibly the more respectable news outlets have a lesser web presence :-) I note that he's described as "failed" in that field. If you have some time, could you please take a look at this article? You edited it quite some time ago. The subject is strange as are some of the edits to the article. At the moment, it is being heavily edited by someone who is probably affiliated with the subject. My problem is I have limited patience and often take a blunt approach, whereas you tend to be more deft with content issues and troublesome editors. I remember that one now - the places I went looking for sources ... stylistically, the current version looks very like the one where we came in. But some of the content is different. Clearly this new editor, like the earlier one, has a very different view of what an encyclopedia entry should look like. I'm tempted to say cut it all back and then sift through it for any more films that have references and can therefore be added to the filmography. Although the Fellini story, if it has a decent ref., might be worth keeping, as I recall the refs. were far from decent. I'll look at it again after a night's sleep and may indeed keep very little of the new material, even though I am a soft touch. But you may want to compare the two editors .... especially since I now see I have been reading Ross-Novak and Novak-Ross as the same person, so that makes three editors making the article look strikingly similar. @Bbb23: I see you did roll it back, and so did someone else. I went through the new material and found a solid source that let me add 2 films to the filmography (both already with articles!), but the claimed work for 2014 had inadequate sourcing. Notably at Fangoria the only claim for Arcangeli's headlining the movie comes in a comment by someone calling himself an industry exec and friend whose nick resembles that of the latest editor at the page ... doubly ironic since we already had his work on that movie sourced, it was just delayed in release to 2013 (I have now changed that) and the 2014 is the DVD release. Whether Benore is a sock of the others, it's often hard to tell whether someone is a sock puppet or a meat puppet without a CU. DavidFlowers and Ross-Novak are both stale. Castilla y León

Hi Yngvadottir, I'm Marcalsig. I'm from Spain from Castilla y León and the translation of each word would be Castilla= Castile (which means place with Castles) and for León, that means Lion in english. Even with your explanation before I don't understand why you just translate Castilla and not León. I understand that is a name so it shouldn't be translate, for example, most of the cities in US hadn't been translated from the Spanish to English, as some of the cities in California: San Jose (you don'y say Saint Joseph) or Tiburon (you don't say Shark) or Los Angeles (you don't say The Angels). This is an english question, I don't care about how other articles are written, I want to understand why in english you translate just some words and not others. WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

1. Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
2. Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
3. Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
4. Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
5. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
6. 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
7. Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
8. Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Matty.007 (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), WikiRedactor (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), Yellow Evan (submissions), Prism (submissions) and Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? It is not word for word; I am tightening up the Swedish text and adapting it as I go, and the majority of the examples and references the Swedish editors have provided are in English. Also I don't think the article is in any danger of deletion - now that it has a plethora of references including 2 UK newspapers. And Neil Gaiman. Thanks for the Guardian ref., and you'll see I fitted in your portmanteau explanation at the start, too. But we clearly disagree about the ideal amount of explanation. As I say, out of time; the remainder of the types are sitting there in Swedish in hidden text, and I'll go by the talk page and check whether the editor who PRODded it was informed as they requested.

In my research, I read all the articles about MOOC's, before submitting for approval. I mirrored all the other MOOC listing that are active. And used the same Language as the MOOC's,, but one editor says it is promotional,, and just like middle school all the other lemmings followed the first over the cliff. With no RESEARCH! My experience has diminished my optimism in this format.

It is a bit disingenuous that you are objective in your entry's,, in order to write an article you must have a investment of the heart. You, like me, don't edit in Wiki for $'s or fame.

Regarding the word Promotional,, you can stretch the word to fit your agenda,, a person who introduce's himself could be a promotional activity.

You are far more likely to know where to look for the needed one or two further reliable sources about the academy than I am. I note that the last two reviews, by DGG, were quite encouraging. As to writing neutrally, as I imply, it's not necessarily something people already know how to do - but it's an essential part of what we do. I just checked, and nobody ever gave you a "welcome" template with links to our policies, discussion spaces, etc. So I'm going to drop a large version on your talk page; something in there may be useful, and I'm sorry the first person to edit there didn't do that. It used to be a friendly and useful tradition here - there are many things here that take some explanation and/or getting used to, such as our definition of "notable". clowningar, as I said in those reviews, and as Yngvadottir says, what is essential is secondary sources to show notability; we go by the sources, not the intrinsic merits. The promotional tone can be reduced by writing in paragraphs, not bullet points, and by saying what others think of it, based on the secondary sources. As a general rule, we mean "promotion" to indicate any article advocating the merits an organization, rather than discussing what it has done. As I am developing the Archives wiki, if there are blanks on WP when I create articles there it seems only reasonable/fair to copy them over here to create placeholder/starter articles (as I borrow from WP) - and I prefer to make it clear that I am responsible for both WP and (other wiki) entries and thus there is no copy-vio.

What is the best way to proceed - putting a note on the WP List of National Archives talk page? (Creating or developing many of the red links/short pages would require a range of language skills - and it is often easier to 'create the article' #or# 'develop the article' than to do both.) @Jackiespeel: There are two issues. The most urgent is that you need to make the stubs look better, providing a reference and not wording anything in the article as a request for the reader or other editors to go look somewhere else. You don't need any more language skills to cite one of the references given in a foreign-language Wikipedia article than you already exhibit when you include the official website - just note the url, title, and location in the footnote. Opinions vary on the usefulness of stub article creation, but everyone agrees that unfinished-looking articles are not useful. Remember, there is no deadline. And ... they attract deletion nominations, whether speedy or not, which is a hassle for everyone. The less important one is that open wikis are not reliable sources. Do not cite them. If you want to reuse your own wording from Wikia or elsewhere, that's fine (although to cross the legal t's and dot the legal i's you should include in the edit summary something like "based on my own wording at http://wikia url"), but you should format the article for Wikipedia - external links section, footnotes, and so on - so if the articles on the other wikis are that short, you may as well do it from scratch. Would it be practical to have (or is there) a 'national and regional archives and libraries' development group (whether or not making use of Wikia Archives wiki) to develop that particular area (including translating from elsewhere on WP - the German regional archives on DE:WP - not necessarily as so many pages). In theory yes, but the majority of the WikiProjects have become much less active in recent years, so I would not advise starting a new one. Regarding the German regional archives, you could ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Germany; that project is still relatively active, but note that on the project page itself, Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany, several of the "project divisions" are red linked. And I'm afraid neither the top of year result nor the MPhil, both worthy of considerable respect though they are, qualify him for an article. What would is if you can find two articles in the press that are about him and his thought, rather than just a review of one of this books; or if you can find simply a ton of reviews of his books, some in good places (like the Times Literary Supplement or leading theology journals) in which case he would qualify as a writer. I welcome the original article about 'Suicide', but an informative article of ways to kill yourself has no place on a positive, forward-moving website viewed by all age groups. I realise this may sound a little arrogant of me, but in light of the fact that the it is accessible through a simple google search of 'suicide' in conjunction with the fact that the article has recieved over 80,000 hits in the last 30 days causes me a great deal of concern. I believe this is a matter for the police, as the issue has been raised several times by other users. I personally have experienced suicidal feelings and feel passionate about this issue. The disruptive editing on Dalmatian was being done by other users. I simply submitted a photo. Again and again users changed it back with zero - and I mean zero - logical reason. After rejecting my photo for no reason they then put another entirely different photo than was there to begin with! Seriously? This is why is so many people find trying to contribute to Wikipedia so frustrating. Pages become a "club" instead of home to any logical discussion. If an interloper may intrude: I think Central Europe reappeared Phoenix-like as a geo-cultural region after the Wall came down, etc. (die Wende, per German). The Poles seemingly want to be thought of as part of Central Europe, but to my mind (having lived in PL) they're Eastern Europe. Central includes DK, D, CH, A, CZ, maybe Luxembourg. Slovakia and all the ex-Yugo states are Eastern.

It's complicated. As the article says (and I've added a couple of variables that were in the cited source), what words one uses (and when one eats the big meal, and what time the evening meal happens ... ) are an index to class and to a certain extent region (there are a lot of such things: see U and non-U English), but the editor is also right that there's a child vs. adult dynamic ... however, that applies more to the upper classes than others :-) Nursery tea used to happen before Mummy and Daddy went to or started their dinner party. My sources on current usage amongst the socially comfortable are limited, but I reckon there might well be printed sources. I hope he or she comes back with one. Thanks for adding the welcome template, then! I believe I said to 74 once - we used to see people adding a lot of those, it was seen in certain quarters as a way to up your edit count, and we have a big range of them to suit most tastes and a lot of special purposes, but now it doesn't seem to occur to people to add one. I think one of the reasons is that the Teahouse came along and its organisers conveyed the message that they were taking over with their way of doing things, and you still see the Teahouse bot posting invites on talk pages, but part of the Teahouse's whole raison d'être was to avoid linking to policies, and in any case the invite conveys no information except that there's a place to ask questions. And because the community felt odd about bot invites, the vast majority of user pages don't even get that. I know some new editors find the welcome templates intimidating, but personally I think the more information we give them upfront - including a range of ways of asking for help, because not everybody is the Teahouse type, I would have been very weirded out - the fairer it is. We use words like "notable" and "consensus" in a very odd way, and look at the situation below with the MOOC - and that editor never got an intro to our policies and terminology. So on balance I think we should revive the old culture of welcoming, and use whatever templates we personally like, not just the one Twinkle uses. Great job! Those were really articles we were missing. A great additon to our art articles in many ways. Will look at home :-) (At one point I was going to improve our Cézanne articles, even had a stack of books out of the library for a few months, but I think that was when I got made an admin, or something ... anyway, I hope someone more qualified and with better eyesight did that by now.)
