Luach.com edit

Hello, Xyz7890. I saw your recent creation of the Luach.com article - thanks for your contributions! Thanks especially for using the {{underconstruction}} template, as that lets new page patrollers such as myself know that you're not quite done with it yet. Good luck with the article! I just wanted to offer a few tips to get you on your way: first of all, make sure that Luach.com is notable according to our guidelines - mainly, that you can find multiple reliable third-party sources about the site. Make sure that you also don't write the article like an advertisement - Wikipedia tries to maintain a neutral point of view on all topics. I'm not suggesting that you've made these mistakes so far, or will - it's just that these are common mistakes by new users, and I'd hate to see your first article get deleted over a simple misunderstanding. If you need help with anything, please feel free to leave me a note on my talk page, or you can drop a question at the New contributor's help page, the help desk, or you can add {{helpme}} to this page and simply ask your question here. Anyway, good luck again with writing your article, and happy editing as always! Hersfold (t/a/c) 00:44, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Star-K.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Star-K.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 21:16, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Star-K.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Star-K.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sturm 08:45, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of Beanie Babies Official Club edit

Adding the Beanie Baby to Ace (disambiguation) edit

Hi, The entry you've added to the Ace dab page has a minor problem -- adding a piped entry like

Aces (Beanie Baby)

makes it look like there's a web page (or redirect) named "Aces (Beanie Baby)" -- which there's not.

The manual of style says that individual entries should not be pipe linked (the "entry" in this case being Aces the Beanie Baby). It also says that if a word in the description of the entry is linked, you can use a pipe for that link.

Since there is no specific article about Aces the BB, the entry on the dab page should be the unlinked name of the entry, followed by its description. Since each entry needs exactly one working link, you need a link somewhere in the description. This is what I set up with my edit:

Alternatively, you could make the linked verbiage a little shorter:

Shabbat candles edit

Well done for creating shabbat candles. If done well, that article may go a long way; there are plenty of cultural and social references that could be mentioned.

Let me know if you need any help with the sources. I strongly recommend you do this early on, because otherwise nobody will ever get around to doing it. Simple things are good enough: Mishna Shabbat 2nd chapter, Shulchan Aruch Orach Chayim chapter 261 etc etc. JFW | T@lk 05:36, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Response edit

In recent weeks, I have developed an interest in writing a lot of Shabbat-related articles, and contributing to other existing ones. I got so into them, that I divided them into subcategories to make them more organized. Then I got the idea from seeing a template listing related articles at the bottom of all Passover-related pages that there should be one for Shabbat as well. I knew that anyone could make such a template. But I didn't know how.

I asked a Wikipedia-savvy friend for help on how to make one. It took me a while, and I just finished the template {{Shabbat}}, which lists mostly articles from the Category:Shabbat. After adding it all these articles, it revealed to me what was missing from the collection of Shabbat articles, so today, I went and created a few of them to fill this niche.

The Shabbat candles article contains small sections that I copied from other existing articles. The images, likewise, come from these articles. This is just the beginning of what I am hoping will grow into a much larger one. The purpose of the article is to describe not just the physical candles, but the candlelighting ritual and the start of Shabbat. All of these fit together into one article. Just so you know, I made "licht bentsh" redirect to this article, and I created a disambiuation page out of "candlelight" and "candlelighting" since that term has multiple meanings.

If there is anything you know that you feel you could contribute to this article, that would really be great! Xyz7890 (talk) 06:56, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Let me know if you need help with sources. We should mention the reason why Jews light candles on Friday night. JFW | T@lk 08:11, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The **NEW** milk and meat edit

Great split! There is so much to write, but subsumed under Kosher food, there was so much to add all over that this never got the attention it deserved. If you'd like, I can provide rich information and sourcing on Wednesday morning, EST -- don't want to step on your toes while you work. I already touched up the intro. Kol tuv. DRosenbach (Talk | Contribs) 06:00, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am trying to reorganize all the Wikipedia information pertaining to kashrut. I have found it quite disorganized. For a long time, it has been contained in just two articles, Kashrut and Kosher foods. These haven't appeared to be well-planned subdivided articles, but rather have a lot of redundancy. Kashrut is a much more complex concept that would work a lot better with a single parent article titled "Kashrut," and a series of subarticles in a category with the same name. Milk and meat is an example of one of them. I agree there is a lot more to include, and I hope that anyone with useful information will make these contributions. Xyz7890 (talk) 18:43, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you'd like, I'll take this over so you can move on. DRosenbach (Talk | Contribs) 20:22, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Given the openness of Wikipedia, anyone is welcome to make these contributions at any time. No one needs "permission" to make changes, provided good judgment is used. So if you want to go and make these changes, feel perfectly free. Xyz7890 (talk) 20:25, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Template:Halakha vs Template:Jewish life vs Template:Judaism edit

Hi Xyz7890: Welcome to Wikipedia. You recently created Template:Halakha but it is problematic because ultimately all the 613 Mitzvot fit into Halachah one way or another, and the new template you created would duplicate much of Template:Jewish life and Template:Judaism. Before commencing a vote to merge Template:Halakha into Template:Jewish life I would like to get your views on the matter and see if we can get some input from other Judaic editors. I will therefore copy the above comments to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism#Template:Halakha vs Template:Jewish life vs Template:Judaism (now archived at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism/Archive 21#Template:Halakha vs Template:Jewish life vs Template:Judaism). Looking forward to hearing from you there. Thank you, IZAK (talk) 06:58, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Requests when nominating edit

Hi Xyz7890: Regarding your nomination of the article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Separation of males and females in Jewish law it is considered proper professional courtesy when nominating an article for deletion to notify the creator of the article as well, and there are even special templates designed to help with this, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#How to list pages for deletion:

"While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the articles that you are nominating for deletion. Also consider notifying WikiProjects listed on the discussion page. Do not notify bot accounts or people who have made only insignificant 'minor' edits. To find the main contributors, look in the page history or talk page of the article and/or use TDS' Article Contribution Counter. For your convenience, you may use {{subst:AFDWarningNew|Article title}} ~~~~ (for creators who are totally new users), {{subst:AFDWarning|Article title}} ~~~~ (for creators), or {{subst:Adw|Article title}} ~~~~ (for contributors or established users). You can determine the main contributors of the articles by entering the page name at Wikipedia Page History Statistics."

It is also considered good form to post the deletion discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Judaism to allow other Judaic editors to be informed about AfD votes since it is impossible to track everything on Wikipedia.

No doubt you would be greatly appreciative yourself if some of your articles or work was nominated for deletion so that you could give your response and defend your position. Thank you for your attention to this. IZAK (talk) 19:22, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category:Kashrut edit

I want to let you know that I have nominated Category:Kashrut, which you created, for merging to Category:Kosher food. The latter category was named to be more useful to non-Hebrew speaking users of the category system. Halacha template edit

Nice job with this! DRosenbach (Talk | Contribs) 04:19, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I was checking out the debates (although I cannot comment, as they are archived) over whether or not this should be a template or a category. Hmm...although it's great to see the list of all of these on each of these articles, I'm finding that it may work better as a category (haha...don't tell IZAK). Although I think categories are grossly overlooked as tools in Wikipedia, the talmudic principles really don't have anything to to with one another except for them being just that -- talmudic principles. Just wondering what you thought. DRosenbach (Talk | Contribs) 20:03, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
It is nice to put things into categories. I have created a few new categories myself. But templates like these (called "navboxes") are have many benefits. A friend of mine who taught me how to make them told me how great they are.
Navboxes link many articles together. They show all the other articles that one who is reading a certain page may have interest in reading as well. They reduce the amount of orphanage of article that would otherwise exist. And by allowing others to know of the existence of the other article shown on the template, they increase the likelihood that the other articles will be improved.
Categories are good too. So are "see also" sections. But the see also sections can usually list only a limited number of articles, and the categories can be hard to find sometimes.
I added the "Related templates" section to Template:Halakha in a way to settle IZAK's complaint that there were too many Judaism templates, and that too many overlapped. I, myself, found that it did not make sense to list Shabbat-related Halakha articles on this one, since they were already found on Template:Shabbat. If you place two or more templates on one page, they will appear collapsed so you will have to open them to view them. So instead, I provided a link to it on this one. Caution with creating articles edit

Hi Xyz7890: Welcome to Wikipedia. You have done excellent work on Judaic and Halachic topics. Please do not create articles for the sake of multiplying Hebrew sounding, Halachicaly named, and Torah topics when you could fit it all into existing articles that have plenty of room in them. Why create a seperate article on Sukkah hopping when there is so much room on the main Sukkah article? Is it so significant a topic in any case, it has essentially nothing to do with Halacha actually? I moved all of that to a new section at Sukkah#Sukkah hopping and redirected Sukkah hopping to there leaving nothing out. I will try to review your other work. Please feel free to contact me at any time and when in doubt please consult some of the more experienced Judaic editors, some of whom are admins, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism. Thank you very much, IZAK (talk) 06:37, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Although I see your good intentions, I disagree with putting too much information in a parent article, when these individual topics do not relate directly to one another. Doing so makes the parent article lengthy and confusing, and less appealing to the reader looking for simple information. Though WP:KISS does not apply to articles, think of it that way. Also, when these stubs are created, this encourages them to be expanded into longer articles later. Xyz7890 (talk) 19:05, 19 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi Xyz7890: I oppose splitting up articles and topics when they can be centralized given that they do not have that much information on them, as is the case here. WP:REDIRECT is just as important to have in mind here!IZAK (talk) 04:30, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I feel this is valuable because it provides information on different rankings in the game, one of its important factors. That is my opinion. But if we just keep on reverting back and forth, there will be no resolution. We really need to seek the input of at least several others before removing this permanently. Until then, I feel that it is better to let accurate information remain unless there is a concensus to remove it. If you want, you can form a discussion on the article's talk page. Significance of numbers of Judaism edit

Hi. The table of contents (TOC) I made won't update automatically as new numbers are added to the article. An editor will have to include the new numbers in the TOC. Feel free to go back to the old one if you don't like my alternative. — Malik Shabazz (talk · contribs) 02:16, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid not. If you look at the coding for the TOC, it's relatively easy to add new numbers. In any event, I have the article on my watchlist and I'll try to update the TOC periodically. — Malik Shabazz (talk · contribs) 19:22, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Prayer for dew edit

In addition to being a double redirect, the page you finally land on (List of Jewish prayers and blessings), has nothing on it about the prayer for dew. While I wholeheartedly agree that the prayer for dew should make it into the template, there simply isn't any information available in that page, and keeping the link from the template around is essentially false advertising. In general red red links should be avoided in templates and lists, and only added to the template or list after the article is created. --Bachrach44 (talk) 14:22, 7 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Forbidden relationships in Judaism. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Psalms edit

Hey there! You're doing a great job with the Psalms articles; they're looking awesome. Also, upon coming here to tell you that, I noticed you contributed a fair amount to the article Electricity on Shabbat. Coincidentally, I just read that article last week and found it really interesting. Anyway, keep up the good work! AlexHOUSE (talk) 17:09, 2 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I feel it is a disgrace that Wikipedia has been around for 9 years, yet has articles on very few of the individual psalms, which have been around for thousands. All of the psalms are notable enough for articles of their own. I cannot write them all myself because it is a lot of work to do, but my goal is to make them all stubs at the very least. For now, I made all of those that don't have articles into redirects to Psalms, but that is only temporary so there are not red links on them. Xyz7890 (talk) 15:10, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
I disagree with your assertion that each psalm is notable, or requires a page of its own. In fact, I'm not sure what to think of your massive stub creation. Most of those articles have little to no content, and it's all the more confusion because you created them as redirects then undid those. Why don't you pick a single one, work on it til it's useful, then move onto the next, rather than mass creating all of these, especially when it's unclear if each individual one is notable on its own. Shadowjams (talk) 09:33, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Also problematic is the fact that pretty much all of the content that the articles do contain is simply copied from the commentary of the Complete Artscroll Siddur (Ashkenaz), with the effect that many traditional rabbinic interpretations are stated as if they were matters of non-controversial fact (cf. the unqualified assertion in the article for Psalm 20 that the seventy words in the psalm allude to the seventy years between the destruction of the First Temple and the construction of the Second). Nothing wrong with interpretations like this being included, of course (where would we be without our midrash?), but in an encyclopedia it's necessary to make it clear that these are rabbinic interpretations. Fair use rationale for File:IggyBeanie.gif edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:IggyBeanie.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 02:43, 16 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Articles for deletion nomination of Special Beanie Babies edit

I have nominated Special Beanie Babies, an article that you created, for deletion. Conversion to Judaism userbox edit

Hello,

I noticed your conversion userbox and added it to my user page. Then I noticed I was placed into an Orthodox Jewish Wikipedians category. Since I was converted by a Conservative bet din and try to be friendly to all branches of Judaism, I was a bit surprised by this. Is it possible for me to display the userbox without being placed in an Orthodox category? Thank you. Cullen328 (talk) 06:06, 30 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to change this. It is only this way because I copied the text from another userbox that just happened to have this. I am an adopted child by an Orthodox family, and I was converted when I was young, but I grew up fully Orthodox. Xyz7890 (talk) 00:28, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Ephraim Shapiro edit

The article Ephraim Shapiro has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

no evidence this chap is notable

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Scott Mac 21:35, 8 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Infobox tefilla/doc edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. — This, that, and the other (talk) 06:55, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Simcha (disambiguation) edit

This is to let you know that I reverted your edit to Simcha (disambiguation) for these reasons:

  • Your addition of the text about the definition of simcha (the "joyous event" text)
Simple definitions should not be included on dab pages per WP:DABNOT
  • Your removal of the Wiktionary template:
This is proper per Wikipedia:MOSDAB#Linking_to_Wiktionary
  • Your removal of the description of Simcha Jacobovici as the Naked Archaeologist
The description would be helpful to people looking for a specific person named Simcha. It would actually be good if all the name entries had descriptions.
  • Your removal of "given name" from the disambiguation tag
Adding "given name" puts the page in Category:Given names. It should be in this category because it contains a list of people with the given name.

I also see that you have changed the page back, with the comment "dic defs that link to articles are okay". I don't believe this is true; do you know of any provision for this in WP:MOSDAB? The links in the text you put back are examples of a simcha, not things that could be called just simcha. Also, your reversion reverted more than just my removal of the dict def.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I will be watching your talk page for your reply. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:09, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am looking into this now. For starters, I will apologize about the Naked Archaeologist thing. When I first saw the word "naked," I had assumed it was vandalism. Xyz7890 (talk) 18:13, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I guess I can understand that! How about this compromise: put back all the changes I made except for taking out the "dict def". I still don't think the dict def should be there, but the other changes are more important. What do you think? --Auntof6 (talk) 21:03, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I can gladly accept that for now.
I may also look into the possibility of creating an article about the concept of Simcha (event) in the future, though I will have to study to see what references could be used for such. The Simcha article has a "see also" section that says "Simcha is also the name of a kosher beer from Saxony, Germany. Simcha was a slang term used by Jewish-American organized crime to refer to a pimp." These do not really belong there, but I see them as a possibly gateway to future articles, so I have left them for now. I have to wait until I have more time for all that. Xyz7890 (talk) 03:43, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, I have made the change I described. Take a look and see if it matches your understanding of my compromise. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:27, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Your moves edit

H Xyx: Your recent move and renaming of Anti-work attitudes in Haredi Judaism in the midst of an AfD was not helpful. See my comments at the AfD. Please do not move around and rename articles during deletion discussions as that just creates confusion. Feel free to propose any name you want in the Afd discussion, but normally one should wait until the AfD is over and WP:CONSENSUS is evident to rename or move the article. Right now no matter what name you try to impose, the content and very existence of the topic are all under discussion at the AfD. Thanks, IZAK (talk) 05:52, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Lev Tahor BLP issues edit

Hi- I have seen a negative edit history on Lev Tahor. Being that Lev Tahor is a minority group they fall into the category of Biography of Living persons. Wether or not we agree with their ways of life - we should be careful to keep that article neutral as per BLP policies.

To me it seems that the article is and attack article WP:ATTACK. I have not even found basic information on their culture and ways of life. All other articles about Orthodox/Hassidic/Haredi Jews first give a general Neutral description about their way of life. Some of the articles are followed with controversies. I see that you have knowledge about the group. Maybe we should try to re-structure.Caseeart (talk) 04:58, 23 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have only included info that I got from the sources, and I have best tried to be neutral, writing it as a factual article. I am not the only he who has contributed to this article. Put a neutrality tag on top if you are concerned. Xyz7890 (talk) 19:50, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cantillation marks edit

Hi Xyz7890, you have written a series of articles about cantillation marks which indicate the proper musical motifs when the sacred text is chanted (beside serving also as punctuation system). But as I understand it (I am no expert in this) these marks do not specify absolute pitches with absolute duration like the musical notation we are used to. Instead there appear to be different traditions how these musical motifs are chanted, some of them depend even on the liturgical context. I guess this was the motivation that you uploaded the outline of these musical motifs in diagrams like File:Pazer.jpg which avoid a precise musical notation. When you uploaded these diagrams, you stated that you created these works entirely by yourselves. I wonder whether you created these diagrams from scratch or if similar diagrams for these motifs are also found in the literature. I am asking as you uploaded these diagrams as JPEG files, a file format with a fixed rasterization, which is great for photographs but not suitable for diagrams. I could assist in a transition to scalable SVG files but before I do this I would like to know all about their origin. Thanks and kind regards, AFBorchert (talk) 05:54, 14 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
