God of the gaps edit

Thanks for your excellent work in tracking down those most important of primary sources on the subject of the God of the gaps, and sharing them. Apparently you already know it's a subject that has gained increasingly wide relevance today (what with "intelligent design", "theistic evolution", "artificial life", "panentheism", and a host of other meeting places at the borders of traditional theism). Good regards. ... Kenosis 16:06, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Myth of the flat earth edit

Well actually you're wrong, Tom.

There isn't a single statement throughout the article of "modern misconception that the prevailing cosmological view" was of a flat earth. The Russell quotes from Irving don't go that far: one portrayal of an ecclesiastical gentleman wittering about the hide of the sky doesn't amount to much and so many of Russell's statements are demonstrably wrong. e.g. it's obvious that what is in Isidore's Etymology is essentially no different from what Anaximander was saying a thousand years before - and he even pinched the map design from him. He's certainly heard of more modern views - but he doesn't accept them.

There is a single account of American Pageant which possibly is responsible for some the misconception - but it says nothing about "prevailing views" only about a few sailors - and where did it get its ideas from? Not the quoted sources. And when did it appear and when was it pulled from that text?

The genuine flat-earthers such as Rowbotham and Kruger don't get a mention. Why? Because almost to a person they were fundamentalist Christians, still are. And as for all the jokes and films - positively puerile! And since Rowbotham's first book was in 1849, Russell's idea that it was all a reaction to the evolution debate is questionable.

I won't reinstate the second statement. I put it in in despair to see if any of the creationists would notice. And since it ignores Pliny it's not even totally correct. But I really would like to see some evidence. It seems like it's a classic urban legend that is being used to promote singularly uninformed views. (I'll put your talk on my watchlist.) Young Earth creationism edit

This help request has been answered. If you need more help, please place a new {{help me}} request on this page followed by your questions, or contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page.

I'm trying to make (what appear to me to be) uncontroversial changes to Young Earth creationism, but immediately got them reverted with the charge of being "religiously motivated", which I think is unwarranted. I've tried to enter into a discussion about the nature of the changes, but somehow or other the reverter and I don't seem to be able to communicate. With the exception of one small comment, no one else seems to be at all interested. I've tried, most recently, dipping a toe in the water to make the changes one at a time, with no reaction at all to those changes after waiting a few days. I was about to go ahead with the changes as I see fit, when I see that Talk:Young Earth creationism got tagged with a warning about possible sanctions. I don't know who or what the warning is about. What am I to do? TomS TDotO (talk) 17:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

About the sanction tag, where was this? If you're referring to the tag at the top of Talk:Young Earth creationism, that isn't specifically directed at you, but is a general notice to all editors that edits to that page are treated with an added level of scrutiny and that admins may be a little more ruthless in taking action against editors that cause problems. As for the content dispute you are involved in, you may wish to request a third opinion from a neutral party. If that doesn't help, there are other dispute resolution processes, but I don't expect they'll be necessary in this case. AJCham 22:30, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I notice that you added another book to the bibliography. People keep adding every book they come across. I am in a quandry as to what to do about this. On one hand, a book may provide a student with valuable information, but on the other hand if I didn't use that book in writing the article, then I can't really cite it. Speedy deletion nomination of Switch Witch edit

Please refrain from introducing inappropriate pages, such as Switch Witch, to Wikipedia. Doing so is not in accordance with our policies. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi TomS TDotO. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). An article you recently created, Table of the House, does not have source. Sizable articles are usually not considered stubs, even if they have significant problems or are noticeably incomplete. An article you recently created, Table of the House, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. Proposed deletion of Michael C. Marshall (science writer) edit

The article Michael C. Marshall (science writer) has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. Michael C. Marshall (science writer) moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Michael C. Marshall (science writer), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please follow the prompts on the Articles for Creation template atop the page. ... discospinster talk 01:50, 14 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
