Excellent racehorse articles

Just wanted to commend you on the excellent racehorses which you're creating. We don't have many UK horse racing contributors here, I dabble a little with the odd stub, but your articles are outstanding, well-written and well-referenced. Thanks. You can thank the economic recession for my articles as I find myself with rather more time on my hands than I expected to have at this stage of my career. I thought that British racehorses were under-represented, so I decided to do something about it. At the moment I am re-editing my articles to tone down some of the more effusive language as my Storming Home article had a NPOV template slapped on it. Great work on Tb articles

Thanks for trying. The colours do make a difference to the articles, especially as it's so hard to get hold of usable photographs of the horses. I don't think it's cheeky, given that there's a very small window of opportunity to be included in DYK (5 days between creation and nomination). As for the Lemon Souffle article, I think it's great! I don't do "ratings", exactly, because really they require someone with knowledge of the subject material and articles similar to it to make a specific judgment in relation to those others, but in general I think it's a B, meaning it's certainly above average for most articles I see.  Frank  |  talk  18:46, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

In addition, on the point of self-nomination, submissions at DYK require that the submitter also review another DYK submission, so it's sort of a self-supporting area. Like nearly all British and Irish jumpers, Red Rum was gelded at an early age, and so had no chance of passing on his genes. Even if he had remained "entire", I don't think there would have been much demand for him as a sire; pedigree is very important and in breeding terms Red Rum was, in a phrase I once heard, "by Not Much out of Bugger All". He did, however, have a long retirement: despite all the wear and tear of his racing career (110 races), he lived to 30, which is a very good age for a thoroughbred (roughly equivalent to 90 in human terms). Slowing Down

MFD

WP:Miscellany for Deletion. It's similar to WP:AFD. We have several different places for deletion discussions, based on the types of pages being discussed: templates go to WP:TFD, stubs to WP:SFD, categories to WP:CFD, redirects to WP:RFD, files to WP:FFD, articles to AFD, and everything else to MFD. This is largely done because of the significant differences between the various types of pages themselves, and the different policies and guidelines that apply to each one of them; the reasons that we delete or decide not to delete categories are very different from the reasons that we delete or decide not to delete a redirect, and both are very different from the reasons that we delete or decide not to delete an article. It's pointless to have separate deletion discussion pages for bad userpages (e.g. the ones that you're asking about), for Wikipedia-space pages, and for portals, so we've just lumped them all together at MFD. Grand Parade

Thanks for taking on the Epsom Derby winners! I'd run across Orby and Grand Parade when I was researching the Belmont winner Algerine. It seems that Orby's grandam was the only thing the poor guy ever did right... I've always thought the "losers" have more interesting stories than the illustrious ones. I found some PD photos of Orby and his sire Orme. I'll upload them when I can find out more about the photographer (W.A. Rouch) for copyright reasons. And I must confess that I'd never heard of Algerine before I looked up Grand Parade's pedigree. One thing I've noticed when trawling through the news archives is that racing people don't change: a hundred years ago they were complaining that genuine stayers were dying out and that top three-year-olds were being retired too quickly. Hi, I just approved the DYK hook for this article. The only minor issue I spotted was that reference #10 that was used to support the sentence "Indeed, according to the Daily Mail's correspondent, Grand Parade's only problem came when he attempted to jump over a road which crossed the course." isn't from the Daily Mail and doesn't seem to mention the 'problem'. This wasn't enough to hold up the nomination but I would appreciate this being fixed when you get the chance (or perhaps you can clear up my misunderstanding if that's the case). Bloody but Unbowed

Thanks for your reply. I hope I wasn't too abrupt. I'm used to POV challenges that are in fact part of a POV initiative themselves, but your hesitation over the Bahraini Uprising title doesn't seem anywhere near falling into that category. The media's initial description of Protests to describe the events suggested something uncoordinated and perhaps unsustained and then the Gulf Coordination Council-led suppression of the pro-democracy demonstrations has perhaps given the impression that there was only a brief period of emergent unrest followed by a return to a militarily-imposed state of order. I guess that may be why you feel comfier with that original widely-used description of protests. I don't in fact find the WP article itself all that helpful, with its "synthesising" definition: "The 2011 Bahraini uprising ... is a series of demonstrations, amounting to a sustained campaign of civil resistance ...", since the demonstrations were the centrepieces of the campaign rather than the campaign itself. From February to mid-March the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain was at least as cohesive as in the other "Arab Spring" uprisings and the repression since then has not yet succeeded in crushing the opposition or dispelling the sense of a political "stand-off", hence my own willingness to consider the sustained campaign of protests legitimately described as an uprising, irrespective of reliable source use, such as by Frank Gardner. I hope you don't mind me bringing my comments on that specific issue here since it's a diversion from the main subject of discussion at the Deletion proposal. I think TB Heritage is confused. Sporting Magazine does not mention any other start before the Goodwood fiasco, and a Times article mentions that race as her "reappearance" on the turf. She did not run at any of Newmarket spring meetings and was withdrawn from the Chester Cup (much to the chagrin of the bookmakers:) and Ascot Gold Cup. After Goodwood, she was scratched from the Brighton Cup and was not entered in any of the October races. Unfortunately, the 58 Turf Register was not digitized with the corresponding Sporting Magazine, so there could have been an unpublicized wo or forfeit but it's unlikely that it would not have been mentioned elsewhere later in the season. Santa Claus on April 1?

Hi, in case you hadn't noticed, I suggested an April Fools' Day hook for Santa Claus (horse). Such hooks tend to get a lot more page views. If you'd like to go ahead with that hook, the article needs an inline citation immediately after the "stud" fact. Race records for early thoroughbreds

Just putting this here for now; will c&p to project page when I'm clear. When summarising a horse's record for an infobox there are a couple of issues to look at. Before c.1840 walkovers and forfeited matches were quite common and I was wondering how we should count them. In the case of a walkover I think it should definitely count as a win: the race was scheduled, a horse turns up and completes the course to take the prize. The absence of other runners doesn't invalidate the event. Match races are slightly different. As far as I can tell, when an owner decided not to run his horse, and instead pay a forfeit, there was no requirement for the "winner" to complete the course or even turn up at the track. The forfeit was an arrangement between the owners, not a race. In some cases, the forfeit was paid because one of the horses had been retired or had died. For these reasons I don't think that forfeited matches should count towards the race record. On the other hand, contemporary sources always list forfeits received alongside other prize money, and don't seem to make a distinction, so there is a case for treating them as "wins". The problem would then arise of whether a forfeited match should count as a defeat: it would be slightlyy odd to say that a horse lost a race when they were retired or dead. Tigerboy1966  10:07, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

I definitely think walk-overs should be considered as "wins" because the horse technically did come to the meeting and "run" the course. I don't think of forfeits as wins or losses because the horse was never given the chance to compete. They are more of a default of contract with a penalty fee. They do count toward total earnings but since there never was a race, IMHO forfeits should not be counted in career starts. I've had trouble with what to call defeats in match races. Is the losing horse still second or are they unplaced? Froggerlaura (talk) 18:44, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

I think that the "default" position should be that a horse who is beaten in a match race should be credited with second place. If the sources says that the beaten horse "broke down" then that should still count as a second place unless the context makes it clear that the horse failed to finish. Unfortunately, in the era we are currently dealing with, the sources don't always make this clear. I see you have been inserting "unofficial" in front of what looks like pre 1936 Champions such as Sarazen. Please note that ALL are unofficial including the Eclipse Awards as they are just opinions from an assortment of for-profit newspapers and other associations. There is no national governing body for Thoroughbred racing in the United States. I have reworded the Eclipse Award article to reflect this. Re your comment on my Talk page. I appreciate your input and am glad to assist in that you have limited understanding of American racing as per you statement that "I really don't have the knowledge of US racing to do a proper job."[1] So I will repeat what I put in the Eclipse article. There has never been an official award as their is no national body in the United States. (hence all the doping/banning issues) The TRA, DRF etc. are for-profit bodies/newspapers with no recognized authority over any racetracks. Thoroughbred Heritage states that. Read again what I wrote in the Eclipse Award article. It describes it in full and how many newspaper sources claimed Champions in the past, mostly from New York (who ignored/argued/fought with Maryland) as pre 1936 there was little or no racing in California and Kentucky tracks outside Churchill Downs were haphazard at best. Sorry for talkpage stalking, but the "awards" before 1936 are not classified as "Eclipse Awards" and like you say there were many differing opinions at the time as to who was the best horse of the year (DRF usually did this based on career earnings). I think Tigerboy's point for the "unofficial" tags in the pre-1936 horses is that there was not a single (or in some cases two) deciding entity that declared "X was better than Y" and extended the honour. Linking the pre-1936 horses to the Eclipse Awards (they are "official" awards, private company or not) in the infobox is misleading because we are saying that there was universal agreement. A better approach would be to include an "assessment" section (as Tigerboy has done on the Derby winners) to accurately reflect the differing opinions in the press. 1) Pre 1936 distinction? No, unofficial is unofficial whether it is DRF newspaper columnist(s) or New York Times newspaper columnist(s) doing something to get more readers. They are nothing more than an opinion and have no offical status because there is no Sport governing body to give it accreditation. That's what I pointed out in the Eclipse award article. Example so you can understand: The National League Most Valuable Player Award is offical because it is run by Major League Baseball who is the sole national governing authority in the United States and Canada. Similarly, FIFA is in fact a governing authority. 2) I'll repeat ALL (Eclipse Award included) are unofficial and as I stated above the "unofficial" tags should either be removed or inserted next to all named including Eclipse Award winners. I don't have a "position", that would be an opinion which (I repeat) violates POV policy and the WikiProject Thoroughbred racing members don't have the authority to overule Wikipedia:policy. Wikipedia (I repeat) deals only with facts supported by proper references. It's cut and dry, if someone can come up with the name of the Sport governing body that oversees Thoroughbred racing in the United States then insert that with a link along with a link to where that governing body states they have sanctioned the naming of an annual Champion since whatever date in time. WikiCup 2012 February newsletter

Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were Ruby2010 (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions), Miyagawa (submissions) and Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.

The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.

The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. 1. 46 says "leading broodmare sire". In regard to the other, I know it can be inferred, but as I understand it, it needs to be explicit. Something like "That made him undefeated" (if that is what it says in the source). That is my understanding from passed reviews on my noms anyway. You can say "2+2" (with citations, of course) but unless the sources says it equals 4 you can't really say that it does, IMO. Hey Tigerboy, I noticed you haven't put a "class" assessment on a bunch of the horse articles you've written. Not sure if WP TB racing has similar criteria to WPEQ, but the general rule is that you can assess your own articles, and given that you have enough sources and material for a DYK, that makes everything listed here at least C-class in my book, some stuff maybe even B-class. Thanks. I usually leave the articles to see if anyone else assesses them and then do them myself if they are still unassessed after a couple of months. I always just assess my own at the time I've completed my basic article, not enough worker bees out there, IMHO If I have a doubt I err on a lower status ;-) But no big deal, and kudos to you for the big cleanup of WPTB, you have so many horse biographies there, it's a daunting task and you are to be commended! We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well! Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.

Congratulations to Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to 12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!

It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. Or "did you know that Americus' registration in the General Stud Book was only allowed because he arrived in England 18 years before the passage of the Jersey Act? ARGH! Nothing obvious springs to mind. The fact that he alternated between racing and stud duties for several seasons is pretty unusual. He had six great-grandparents rather than the standard eight. The fact that such an obscure racehorse figures in the pedigrees of Shergar, Secretariat and many others that a main page reader will have heard of. I'm pretty sure that Boss Croker renamed him after a political "club" that he ran (no ref on this, but I'm sure I've seen it somewhere). Just out of interest I did a search (I am just an anorak sometimes) and found 302 horse race related entries without a comma and 544 with a comma, say roughly 40/60 (incl NZ and Irish etc). I'm never sure what my main contributory interest is really, rugby or racing - I go through phases of concentrating on one or another. WikiCup 2012 April newsletter

Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Matthewedwards (submissions) and Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Well, I've filled in the cn gaps with the Mortimer book. It's my main starting source for 70's racing but I can usually find on-line sources to back it up. If you agf on the source it's fine, but using the same off-line source 10 times in an article doesn't look good. I will take another look at Gang Forward. It was an article I had in my sandbox for ages. In the end I posted in as a presentable start class article even though I wasn't entirely happy with it.  Tigerboy1966  14:37, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I've been frantically updating or creating articles like Camelot, I'll Have Another, Maybe, Homecoming Queen etc. Also just posted Sixties Icon which has been a sandbox dweller for a while. There are probably a couple of DYK possibles in there (Homecoming Queen winning the 1000 Guineas by the biggest margin since 1859 looks promising). Also trying to get two of "my" articles (Tristan and La Fleche through GA reviews. When I get a chance I will do some QPQ DYK reveiews.

First I tried to alter the tone of your initial edit but after saving that edit I reread the name of the article and realized that, since it was a list of US horses, the fact that it contained only US and Canadian horses is a natural outcome of the compilers project. If it was a list of the top 100 of the 20th C. for the whole planet it would look quite different. I hope that this line of reasoning makes sense for you but I will understand if it doesn't. Thanks for the reply and the link. This brings up the question of whether we should move the article to match the name of the actual book and list. That would take the U.S. out of the title and would pave the way for reinserting our comment that the list seems to ignore horses trained in Europe or Australia. Since it seems that it is only you, me and the IP who prefers Secretariat who have the page on a watchlist I don't think we would have to request the page move. I will leave it up to you and if you do want to move it please do so with my full support. Just did a little digging and found that the list was moved to add US to the title back in 2006 [3]. IMO that would justify even more a move back to the correct title. It would probably be a good idea if we could find a source that points out the North America bias but if we cant we could probably include a neutrally worded mention of it as long as we are aware that it might get removed. Hi. Don't undue edits before going on talk page and talking. In Easy Goer article, I have corrected the heading to say "Bloodhorse Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century", noting that it is only U.S. horses. Also the footing was muddy. We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. I certainly agree that the Japanese articles have much better pictures. British people at a racecourse are more likely to take pictures of their friends than pictures of the horses. If edits are not real vandalism (see wp:3rr) the 3RR limit does apply. Some of your edits to Union Rags could be considered content disputes and reverting them would have a 3RR limit. The idea that I am some kind of Frankel groupie will come as a surprise to anyone who follows my edits. I happen to think that Black Caviar is one of the greatest horses that ever looked through a bridle, and have gone out to bat on her behalf on the article talk page, but facts are facts. The form of horses is always relevant. If x beats y by five lengths the form of y is relevant to the article on x. Otherwise the win would have no context. WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. Carry Back

Thanks again Tigerboy. I appreciate your compassion for thoroughbred racing. I was shocked to see the job you did on Carry Back's story. It was so comprehensive. Most of what I wrote was from memory, my books and a few websites I found. And 50 years can dull some memory! It was such a "rags to riches" story. The only other horse I made contributions to on WIKI was Kelso. Now there's a great topic for you to expand on. Let's face it, no other horse will ever do what he did...win five HOTY's in a row. I wasn't his biggest fan at first as he was CB's adversary, but I grew to appreciate him after CB retired. I'll never forget being at the 1964 Aqueduct Stakes when he beat Gun Bow, who he was trashed by weeks earlier. Rumor had it Kelso at 7 was through. But he proved the experts wrong. The crowd that day was one of the loudest I ever heard. Right up there with Secretariat's Belmont, which I was also fortunate to see live. Anyway old Kelso closed out that year with the still world record on dirt for 2 miles of 3:19.1 and a 2:23.4 1 1/2 mile Washing DC Int'l on grass, and his final HOTY. And the list of horses he beat over the 6 years. It's safe to say he beat more good horses than any other thoroughbred. And then there's Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens. The Chief. The "Giant Killer". Beat all the greats since Kelso. Buckpasser, Secretariat (twice with two different horses), Skip Away...the list goes on and on. He just won another stakes this past Saturday with a 39-1 shot beating the 1/4 favorite. At 83 years young, still getting to the winners circle.

PS: One last thing. You may be interested in a great reference book I use constantly. It's issued by the The Daily Racing Form, titled "CHAMPIONS...The Lives, Times and Past Performances of the 20TH Century's Greatest Thoroughbreds" It covers every champion horse from 1894 to 2010 in it's latest edition. The PP's are especially wonderful, as you can trace the horse's every race. I highly recommend this terrific book. And you can sure win a lot of arguments!

The problem with Kelso is that with my editing style it would end up 60-70kb long (which is too long). One fact that I stumbled upon when researching American Horse of the Year was that Kelso came within one vote of a sixth award in 1965. I might have a go at Beau Purple next: I had actually never heard of the horse until I started on Carry Back, but he was obviously exceptional on his day. Roman Brother is another horse of that era that I've had in my sights for a while.

Very impressed that you saw so many greats "in the flesh". The best horse I ever saw "live" was Dayjur at my local course, Haydock Park; he was probably the best European sprinter of the last fifty years, although he came up agonisingly short in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Yes I must learn how to use WIKI correctly. I know my son can help me if I can get him over here! Ah yes...little Roman Brother. Believe it or not, he was one of my favorites too. He was hardly 15 hands if I remember right. He was one tough little gelding. I can look up his PP's if you need some info. He split the HOTY honors in 1965 with the wonderful filly Moccasin. Duel HOTY's. So I guess the vote was a close 3 way battle. Kelso was rounding into form, won the Stymie, then got hurt. He simply did not run enough in 1965 to win HOTY.

Yes, I remember that BC Sprint. Dayjur was the favorite. Didn't he "jump his shadow" deep in the stretch and got nosed by the excellent filly, Safetly Kept? It was a great race.

Beau Purple was the legendary trainer Allen Jerkens first "Giant Killer" thoroughbred. He started out as a sprinter, but with Mr. Jerkens masterful training, taught the colt how to harness his speed over a distance as a 5yr. old. In the Summer of 1962 it was assumed that the leader of the handicap division would be between the reigning 2-time HOTY 5 yr old Kelso, and the popular and now mature 4 yr old Carry Back. But Beau Purple "upset the apple cart", defeating both Kelso and Carry Back on 3 occasions each, twice on 1 1/4 mile dirt races, and surprisingly in a 1 1/2 mile race on turf. All of these victories were in major stakes races, all carrying $100,000+ purses. Jerkens went on to defeat so many great champions with good, but usually less than great thoroughbreds and became the youngest trainer ever at the time (45 years old) to be inducted in the Thoroughbred Hall Of Fame in 1975. Two years earlier he defeated Secretariat by a length with a colt named Onion at equal weights in the Whitney, then seven weeks later trounced Secretariat by 5 1/2 lengths with Prove Out, who actually carried 7 pounds more than Secretariat in the Woodward.

Tiger....("Autumn" or "Fall?) I don't see a problem with either of those terms. We use both here in the States. I prefer autumn, but fall is used more commonly in conversation.

I would however use "National Thoroughbred Hall of Fame" rather than "American Hall of Fame" in your articles.

I looked over what has been written so far for Roman Brother. In the Two Year Old section: "Despite losing his undefeated record when beaten by Sophia's Boy and Hurry to Market at Garden State Park..." This is only partially true. According to my trusty aforementioned "Champions" reference book PP's, RB finished second to Hurry To Market in both Garden State racetrack starts on November 1 and November 9, 1963. Don't know where Sophia's Boy came from.

As I stated earlier, he was a tough little horse, but maybe just shy of being a great one. He has yet to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He finished his career of 42 starts with 16-10-5 record and $943,473 in earnings. If you need any more info concerning his PP's, etc., do not hesitate to ask.

Tiger....RB's 2 yr old campaign consisted of only 6 races. A maiden win, then two allowance victories before winning the Champagne and finishing second twice in the aforementioned Garden State races to Hurry To Market. If you need dates, track etc. of those first 3 starts above, let me know. BTW, Hurry To Market was voted 2 yr old champ, finished second in his only 3 yr old start, got hurt, and never ran again.

Absolutely, the horses back then ran a heck of a lot more, and were bred for STAMINA and durability. Not any more. SPEED SPEED SPEED is all they seem to care about now. Too bad. Here's a fact that is hard to believe the way they race today. Did you know that Triple Crown winners Omaha, Count Fleet, Assault and Citation actually ran in a race in between the Preakness and Belmont? Either a stakes race or allowance..the trainers wanted a race in them as 3 weeks was too long a break. With the Triple Crown on the line. Amazing.

Yes. in breeding is a problem. It's getting to the point that almost every entry nowadays in the Kentucky Derby can be traced back to Native Dancer. Either on the male line, Raise a Native/Mr Prospector or through his daughter Natalma, dam of Northern Dancer. A list of his descendants reads like a who's who of the last 60 years. 3 Derby winners, so many champions, it's amazing. The Dancer definitely needs more written in WIKI than is currently available. He had a rough trip in the 1953 Kentucky Derby, and missed by a diminishing head of being an undefeated Triple Crown Winner. He won 21 of 22 races in his career. When you take in consideration his fantastic racing record and his success as a sire, I always believed he should be ranked even higher than his #7 ranking on the Bloodhorse Top 100 thoroughbreds of the 20th Century.

Native Dancer was scheduled to cross the Atlantic for a start in the Arc de Triomphe during his 4 yr old campaign in 1954 but got hurt and was retired. Too bad.

Also I wasn't sure whether or not to use a 0 for those with unrecorded finishing position, as obviously form wise this usually used for a finishing position of 10+. We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.

Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

1. Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
2. Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
3. Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
4. Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
5. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
6. Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
7. Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
8. Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), Ealdgyth (submissions), Calvin999 (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), The Bushranger (submissions) and 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

Sun Stream at the 1000 Guineas

Hello, Tigerboy1966. FYI: The Evening Post article currently used as Ref. 3 in the Sun Stream wikiarticle says Sun Stream's victory in the 1945 1,000 Guineas gave Lord Derby a sixth win in the race, but the Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby wikiarticle lists 7 wins, and I can count "17th Earl of Derby" showing up 7 times in the table on the 1,000 Guineas Stakes wikipage.
