New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Theroadislong,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 816 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

remove "Georges Romme" page

Hi Theroadislong: I noted the notability issue inserted on the page on Georges Romme. I'm the subject of this page (and also a contributor to wikipedia). I fully agree with your observation/comment.

I suggest you delete the page entirely. Can you do that, or have it done? (I do not have the authority to do so.)

GeorgesRomme (talk) 13:31, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

a few questions about the page I'm constructing

Sir,

Thank you for your careful attention to my page about Dave Bradley. I am sorry to cause you so much work--I've never done this and I'm not a good writer. If you don't mind I have few quick questions.

Unreferenced puffery--this is my lack of skill. I failed to get across the significance of this person. He is known everywhere in neuroscience--and diabetes--as having a rare kind of creativity. He hops from one profession to another, each time with exceptional success. After ten years absent, his neuroscience papers are increasingly cited. This is rare; typically the citation rate falls to nothing in ten years.

That, of course, is puffery. I did try to present tangible things, awards and such, but I'm not sure how to reference them. He has the original invitation to meet the Queen at the museum opening. To have an exhibit in the world's largest science museum is significant, which is why I included it. The invitation is all I have to go on.

How should I reference his influences? With their location, or perhaps some of their papers?

Thank you again for your attention.

I'm afraid that, like many others, you have misunderstood what Wikipedia is about. It is an encyclopaedia, which summarises what independent sources have published about subjects. Creating an article is one of the most difficult things to do on Wikipedia, creating one when you have a conflict of interest is doubly difficult, creating one without reliable sources is just impossible I'm afraid. You need to establish notability by adding references that show there is indepth, widespread coverage of him in reliable sources. Theroadislong (talk) 16:29, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

response to comments on COI

Thank you for your helpful comments.

I work near, previously for, Bradley, but I'm not really his friend. No hostility, but I'm not updating this page out of affection. Patrick Kennedy recruited Bradley to speak publicly about mental illness, so our boss (Daniel Goldin) said someone should update his stub. Bradley can't do it, so I got volunteered. Luckily I had help from (forgot the name) an editor who trimmed down all the melodramatic stuff. The page, as it is, isn't much longer or more elaborate than the stub, but it has a picture now and some words about his career.

I saw a comment about Bradley being fond of the awards, and how that shouldn't matter. In that spirit, I might just take it out.

Thank you again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dandh8 (talkcontribs) 16:55, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Your draft article, User:EFieldsatGBG/sandbox

Hello, Theroadislong. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "sandbox".

In accordance with our policy that Articles for Creation is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. 1989 18:23, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

I was going to go back in and add citations to my material after completing the additions. Why did you feel you had to remove all the content? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rachgarb (talkcontribs) 20:17, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with him have published about him, in reliable sources. You have a very clear conflict of interest and should not be editing any of the articles connected with your gallery. Theroadislong (talk) 20:20, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

09:40:29, 19 May 2017 review of submission by Anastasiia09

Hi Theroadislong! Nice to meet you and thanks for reviewing my Wikipedia article so quickly. Can you please advise what exactly do I need to correct in my article, so it will be accepted? What wasn't good enough? Thanks and waiting for your response. - Anastasiia09 (talk) 09:40, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, which summarises what independent sources have published about subjects and has essentially no interest in what anybody says or wants to say about themselves or their company, on Wikipedia we need reliable sources independent of the subject.Blogs, your own website and press releases are not suitable sources. Theroadislong (talk) 12:52, 19 May 2017 (UTC). Theroadislong (talk) 12:52, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your response, @Theroadislong:. I understand it is required to have reliable and independent sources. My question is, how many of them do you require? Can you please look at the references of Draft:Maytech once again, and check the source №1 (Digital Marketplace lists all suppliers that can provide services to the government). Do these 3 sources I listed count as reliable and independent? They are not enough because my article is not very short? - Anastasiia09 (talk) 11:28, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
Yes those sources are fine, but all the other content needs reliable sources too, that's what wikipedia does, it summarises what the independent reliable sources say about a subject. Better to make the article much shorter with better references. Theroadislong (talk) 11:41, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
Good morning @Theroadislong:. I just had a look at the article about Google Drive, to the Features section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Drive#Features. In the article about Maytech there is Features section too, and they look similar, Google also references to Drive Help, Google Developers Blog, Docs editors Help. May I ask is this section of my article okay or do I need to tweak and shorten it? - Anastasiia09 (talk) 09:20, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Techtonica.org

Hello, I respectfully request that my deleted page be restored so that I may continue working on it.

I wish to add information on two news articles about Techtonica.org. Our second news article is in the works and we will have a date of publication in a few weeks (Jared Jones of Upworthy is one of them.)

I have spent the morning reading on neutral POV and notability and have bookmarked the Wiki Game for tonight when I get home. I can see that I have much to learn and I want you to know that I am up for it.

notability

Hi,

The "notability" tag suggests news and interviews. Please note that I listed a highly prestigious interview with the Chronicle of Higher Education, and two news articles about Bradleys papers, one from Nature, the other from Science.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dandh8 (talkcontribs) 01:40, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

Interviews are not normally considered reliable sources. Notability requires verifiable evidence, Sources of evidence include recognized peer-reviewed publications, credible and authoritative books, reputable media sources, and other reliable sources generally. See WP:WHYN. The references you have provided mostly link to PDF files on his website these are not suitable. Theroadislong (talk) 08:53, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

What?

Hi You told me off on my talk page? Huh? I read some of the other talks and it seems you correct people, which is a good job, but I made sure not to write social media related things. What have I done? I think you need to say more about what people have done wrong in your corrections, because otherwise it gets unclear. Hello TRIL,

I've been instructed not to edit Dr. Bradley's page. May I please request that the reference to Justia.com be changed to

Otherwise, starting from Justia.com, it's quite difficult to find the patent list specific to David Bradley. Thank you!

External Links and Secondary Sources Margareta Boivin article

I would like to know what to you mean by External Link as I can see many celebrity has their own External Links(title) example are Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Metallica etc.

also the secondary sources, the only none secondary source used in Margareta Boivin article is her website all the other source are secondery sources. Sebastienb06 (talk) 15:24, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

You have used her website as a reference 17 times. Please read Wikipedia:GNG. We only summarise what reliable, independent published sources say about the topic, we have no interest in she says about herself. We don't use external links in the main part of the article, only sparingly in the external links section. Theroadislong (talk) 17:54, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

GinnevraDubois (talk) 14:08, 31 May 2017 (UTC) I do not understand why this article was rejected due to "unreliable sources" Sur and El Mundo are two of the best newspapers in Spain. I have seen other articles (the same topic) with no ref. I think the reviewer is being subjective.

Please readWP:NFILM and WP:NFO. To presume notability, reliable sources should have significant coverage. It is difficult to gauge the coverage as it's all in Spanish. A Spanish speaking reviewer might help?Theroadislong (talk) 14:22, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Brunei Subaqua Diving Club BSADC,for REVIEW

Hi TRIL

I have to almost laugh at this situation. Sorry I am very new to Wiki and this is my first attempt.

I understand the problem that has been raised BUT the FUNNY side is Wiki has got it backwards All the text/material I have used is mine and i the author and copyright holder of it all. I have posted all of this text and material to OUR/MY website WWW.BSADC.COM at various time.

The site that is cited in the msg I got ""This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.dtb.com.bn/blue-water-wreck/. F""

Is in itself correct - it does say appears!!!!!

Well the reason is they have plagiarised my ww.bsadc.com site, text, indian ink drawings and all.

I am actually not surprised that this site has done so. There are many that have, some with verbal permission, many know me or club and used without asking, or just straight good old plagiarised.

If you use copyright / plagiarised auto search software I/you will have this problem a lot. Our Site was is the Original source and it (and our book for that matter) have been copied by more sites that I can mention.. With the exception of a new Diving Artist on the scene last couple of year who is doing new sketches of all the wrecks..-- Any sketch you see of the American, Blue water, Australian Wreck are all off our site. One or two have been retouched up dated but on our originals.

The same applies to MOST text you see on these wrecks it is either a direct copy or an edit version of our writeups.

Ok I think I have given you the information necessary.

Now what do I do from here ???

I CAN'T PUBLISH BECAUSE LOADS OF OTHER SITE HAVE PUBLISHED MY WORK I do ALMOST see the funny side.

Thanks

Hello Theroadislong,

I AM the person, Brenda Williams who designed the logo. I talk about the inspiration and the design BEHIND the logo. No one would know that but me, since I was the creative person on this project. When I explain this story to people lately they find this fascinating and that is why I am adding it also the US Open will be there in a couple of weeks and this will be looked at I would assume more.

Closest source would be at Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).ElliottWilliamsDesign.comCite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). where the logo is shown.

Sorry, I am new to this. Thanks for your kind help.

Brenda Williams 14:18, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

In which case you should absolutely NOT be adding the material at all. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, which summarises what independent sources have published about subjects and is not a place to promote your own work. If the logo design has been reported on in sources unconnected to you then it might be possible to add a line by providing the source on the articles talk page, you should not add any content yourself as you have a clear conflict of interest. About musicologist Paul-Gilbert Langevin

Hello Theroadislong, It's been one month since the page about Paul-Gilbert Langevin has been added to the category "conflict of interest". I would like to know if the problem has been solved and the page cleaned, corrected and verified. The same page in other languages does not cite the same problem. Paul-Gilbert Langevin, who passed away in 1986, is still considered by other musicologists as the specialist of Anton Bruckner and Franz Schubert's works in Europe. Thank you to give me information about how to solve the problem if it is not done yet. Kind regards, Paul-Eric Langevin (talk) 21:15, 04 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello Theroadislong

To answer your question, No.

If I were why would this article be posted after such a long time. I mean the number of years since the company's inception till today. You may perhaps ask why I'm interested in posting this. Well I would like to post anything, now that recent changes in Wiki makes it easier to 'format' articles. I've modified the article once again to remove anything at all that might be advert. Hi Theroadislong. Thank you for reviewing my article. I have made a few edits but I'd like to know how else I can improve. The reason for rejection states, "independent, reliable, published sources." My article includes 18 sources that are independent published sources. Is there a better way to incorporate these to be given acceptance for my article? Are there specific areas of this article that read more like propaganda than encyclopedia? My aim is to write a factual article about this notable company with over 67 years of history. I plan to add more of that history in the future.

Your sources include press releases and blogs neither of which are considered suitable, we require in depth coverage in independent, reliable sources. You should also declare any conflict of interest Theroadislong (talk) 13:47, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Draft:Robert_Ferguson is not an autobiography

Thank you for your message regarding the Wikipedia policy on submitting autobiographies. My article about Robert L. Ferguson is not an autobiography. I created an account with the name RLFerguson to submit an article about him, but I am Sallie J. Ortiz, a freelance science and energy writer. Robert Ferguson has been a significant influence and lifelong promoter of nuclear technology for peaceful uses in both the government and private industry. I foresee that I will be able to add more documented material about his work in producing the vital medical isotope, Mo99, using a much safer method than currently exists. Do I need to move this article draft to a different account to prove it is not an autobiography? Thanks again, SallieRLFerguson (talk) 16:10, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Each sentence requires a source. But you first need to show that he meets Wikipedia's requirements for notability - basically, it appears there has not been enough material published about him to base an article on. (Wikipedia has no interest in what you or I know or think about him, and little interest in what he or his associates have said or published: it is only interested in what people unconnected with him have published about him in reliable places such as major newspapers). I am enquiring to determine the exact reasons behind the TrustATrader page firstly, being removed, and secondly, being marked for Speedy Deletion. I must clarify that I am not in any way associated with TrustATrader or any kind of agency trying to use the wikipedia page to promote the brand or increase its search rankings. If this is the main reason for the article being marked for Speedy Deletion, please can this be noted. Of course, I am not sure what has happened in the past regarding possible previous attempts to create this page for marketing purposes, but this is certainly not the case in this instance.

I would also like some clarification as to what parts of the content are being deemed as 'advertising'. I have made one revision in which I removed quite a bit of content, which after review, may have been deemed as 'advertising'. Another wikipedia page - Rated people, is in a similar field to TrustATrader, and looking at their page, I cannot see stark differences between the two regarding content. All of the content on the TrustATrader page is entirely encyclopedic using good sources. If you are able to give me some further information as to what sections of the page need editing, I will make sure to look at the content and work on it further to make sure it is not deemed as 'advertising'. Thank you. JosephCaley (talk) 08:37, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, I have nominated Rated people for deletion as it appears to be a non notable company. You would have to ask the users who deleted the article why they thought it was advertising, I cannot see it as I'm not an admin. Theroadislong (talk) 13:01, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello, you deleted my submission on the Wexford collegiate page and I added a reference from a verified website to prove validity but you deleted it again. decline Deborah Claire Procter

Thanks Therodislong. I'm happy that wikipedia is so exigent - that's what makes it so important. I've trimmed this biography to respond to where citation was not possible. For instance Creative Wales Award is very prestigious but they do not have any online record of members at this stage. I intend to speak to them about this and will re add when they provide a reference point. Also some older newspapers and local newspapers do not maintain online records so I have also cut those references to make it easier. Please note that four newspapers from Argentina are referenced which are the big four (just like in the UK there is the Guardian, Telegraph and Times). Where in the world are you from? I wonder if you just didn't release that these newspapers are so important - there is no reason you would have to know. Federico Monjeau and Diego Fischerman are the most famous music critics in Argentina therefore it would seem that significance has been demonstrated. Wales Arts International also do not maintain online records so for convenience those references have also been removed. Happy to keep tweaking for accuracy, however I think now it is substantially improved and therefore demonstrates the requisites. I appreciate your spirit of excellence and wish you a good weekend. Being a fellow of Royal Society of Arts demonstrates a significant trajectory as does winning Creative Wales Award. Bristlewood (talk) 00:35, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Being a fellow of Royal Society of Arts certainly helps although you haven't referenced it, but the Creative Wales Award is not a notable award. Theroadislong (talk) 08:02, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

What makes you say that Creative Wales Award is not a significant award? Equally many other people have added RSA without a reference. I will ask RSA how to prove a fellowshipBristlewood (talk) 05:51, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for looking at my article. So, I understand that I cannot use information or quotes that come from the subject herself, such as from her lectures and her diaries? Can I use information that came from an interview with the curator/archivist of the Natalie Van Vleck collection of art at Flanders Nature Center?

Do all sources used need to be from a written source? Are there any exceptions? Can I use information that comes from the website of Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust, that was founded by Natalie Van Vleck? thanks very much. I am new at this! ````Joan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vanvleck (talkcontribs) 21:55, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

Those are primary sources which do not establish notability. Wikipedia requires there to be in-depth coverage in reliable, independent published sources. Theroadislong (talk) 08:30, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

Notability of Girish Jhunjhnuwala article

A couple of weeks ago you tagged Girish Jhunjhnuwala with {{notability}}. Wanted to know your reasoning. It has had two AfDs, one concluded just two weeks before you tagged the article. He has profiles in Businessweek, South China Morning Post and EJ Insight. The New York Times wrote 5 paras on him in a piece on serviced apartments in Hong Kong. —A L T E R C A R I   13:51, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

I have removed the template as it survived the afd, though sources seem poor and his hotel group barely passed notability with a no consensus at it's last afd. Problems with coi editing too. Theroadislong (talk) 17:26, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello....Gryphon Investors

Hello Theroadislong,

I started the Gryphon Investors article page a few months back. Looks like some other people have made edits but didn't do so well and didn't source. Also looks like you edited that copy out.

I notice that I can't find the page when I Google it (but I can get there if I go to Wikipedia and then search it). Is that related to the recent edits/changes?

Thanks.

Since the article has been created it would be nice if internet users could find it. Is there a reason why I can't find it on Google, but I can find the "talk' page associated with it? Thank you.Arsenl2017 (talk) 16:18, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

Pontius Pilate talk page

Hi, you accused me of "disruptive editing" of the Pontius Pilate talk page. I don't think this is a fair accusation. I was attempting to communicate with User:HaileyNKim that their joke wasn't funny and it didn't belong on the page. This is more constructive than just deleting what they say as if they were never there. All that is going to do is make them angry and increase any hostility they may have towards wikipedia. I am aware that this is likely the same person vandalising the main Pontius Pilate page. But 5 minutes of calm reflection should be enough to conclude that trying to reach out to them on the article's talk page can only be beneficial. I should reiterate - this is a talk page, it is not meant to look pretty and conform to rules. It is meant to facilitate discussion to improve the article. Watercolor painting

I noticed you removed a large block of links and sources from Watercolor painting. What did you mean by "trim back the link farm"?

it is not Wikipedia's purpose to include a lengthy or comprehensive list of external links related to each topic. No page should be linked from a Wikipedia article unless its inclusion is justifiable according to this guideline and common sense. The burden of providing this justification is on the person who wants to include an external link. Theroadislong (talk) 07:49, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
I'm aware that Wikipedia is not a repository of external links, but some of those links were sources. Jjjjjjdddddd (talk) 07:59, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
They appeared to be personal blogs about how to paint? Which ones are you suggesting were sources? Theroadislong (talk) 08:04, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
I think I found at least a few sources that were good. I think I'll go check. Jjjjjjdddddd (talk) 08:40, 3 July 2017 (UTC) UPDATE: I admit I used a few bad sources UPDATE 2: Most of the sources looked good though. Jjjjjjdddddd (talk) 09:16, 3 July 2017 (UTC) I looked at the sources and links, and though one or two was bad, they mostly looked like good sites. Jjjjjjdddddd (talk) 20:11, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Request on 09:33:55, 3 July 2017 for assistance on AfC submission by DanielleDriveWorks

Hello @Theroadislong:, I got your message about the draft:DriveWorks page being declined as it sounds like an advertisement. Please could you give me some more guidance on which bits are causing it to be declined? This page has been active since 2008 and was only flagged for deletion as I was a new editor (this highlighted there were issues with references). I was advised to establish notability, which I did with guidance from admins and then added more when it was declined by another admin. I removed a lot of the text from the original article and kept it to the bare minimum so it's factual about the software - all of which is backed up with a wide range of independent sources. I'm very lost now as to why it still sounds like an advert and would much appreciate some help from an experienced editor :( Thanks, Danielle DanielleDriveWorks (talk) 09:33, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

DanielleDriveWorks (talk) 09:33, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

The Methodology section reads like an advert and should probably be removed entirely. The editions section is just promotional and the Version history is also only sourced to their website and not required. Theroadislong (talk) 10:12, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Theroadislong:, thanks for your reply. The 'editions' section isn't promotional, but intended to be factual, as there are different types of DriveWorks and they are all seperate pieces of software. 'DriveWorks' isn't just one product, it's several editions which are all different products - some which are included in other software, which is why we broke it down so I don't understand why you think this is promotional? This isn't advertising software, and the section also contains sources to professional engineering magazines speaking about the different software so it's backed up with notable sources.

The version history is purely there so people know which version is the latest one - I can remove the list of past versions if you think it's irrelevant? There aren't any independant sources linked to this as when a new version is released DriveWorks users just tend to go onto the latest one. No-one would ever really need to write about previous editions and any references to old editions are outdated articles (I read the referencing guide related to using very old sources and it said to be cautious).

In the 'methodology' section, I tried to give a general overview of DriveWorks, but I understand why you think it sounds like an advert - sorry about that. If I remove the part from 'The DriveWorks API allows custom plug ins to be written.....' do you think that would make it sound less like an advert? I think some part of this section needs to remain or the article doesn't really explain what DriveWorks is but rather just the impact on the market.

Thanks again for your help and sorry for the long message! :) Danielle DanielleDriveWorks (talk) 12:44, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

The problems you are having are precisely the reason why it is strongly encouraged that you don't write about yourself or your company. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, which summarises what independent sources have published about subjects and has essentially no interest in what anybody says or wants to say about themselves or their company, on Wikipedia we need reliable sources independent of the subject. I will allow another reviewer to decide, when you resubmit. Theroadislong (talk) 16:52, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

Hey @Theroadislong:, Ok understood. I will ask for help at the teahouse as I really need some guidance on how I can fix the issues before I re-submit it for review. Someone else wrote this page orginally, so my intention was only to update it as it was very outdated so wasn't really providing good information for your readers about DriveWorks. Thanks for you help anyway, it's appreciated :) Danielle DanielleDriveWorks (talk) 07:56, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

The page itself is not existing as of now and thus editing the existing page or giving comments on page is not an option I believe. I can disclose my relation to the company details and can give a neutral and factual info. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faisal.pcm (talkcontribs) 11:13, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

About musicologist Paul-Gilbert Langevin

Hello Theroadislong,

This is the message I got from Brian Newbould: "There may be difficulty with the Wikipedia article because you wrote it yourself.  You need to get someone outside the family but with knowledge of your father and of the musical world to validate it. They could read it through and say that it is accurate (if they think it is) but perhaps change or add something here and there. I will still ask others about this."

Paul-Eric Langevin (talk) 12:20, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you are asking here? Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that summarizes what independent, reliable sources say about a topic.

You need to establish notability by adding references that show there is widespread coverage of him in reliable sources, we are not interested in what you or anyone else knows about him. Theroadislong (talk) 10:25, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

I see what you mean. If you're referring to the external links, I shall edit that out. I did not add the external links when I was editing the page. It was there previously.

Which part of my content is not neutral???

How is promoting the names of the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and number of courses neutral anyway?!

Sentences like “with Bristol being one of the most creative cities in the UK.” are not neutral. Theroadislong (talk) 18:38, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
