-moz-border-radius

Hi Svick!
Can you help me again xD. The bs.wiki is using -moz-border-radius in the top-menu (user page, discussion etc) and in the left menu ( main page, contents etc etc.) and in some more places, if you use firefox you will probably se it. I want to remove the moz-border-radius code, where can I find the css-file in mediawiki. --DzWiki (talk) 12:28, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

The code is in bs:MediaWiki:Monobook.css. Svick (talk) 15:22, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Svic - User:Trev_M/ThumbTid now running nicely - always simple when you know how. Hi Svick

We usually have reaction schemes on a line of its own, indented. The vast majority of reaction schemes tend to be long, and having it as a thumbnail is not usually helpful. AWB "cleanup" of NRHP lists

Hey, a couple or few edits by you of NRHP list-articles, many but far from all of which are on my watchlist, are lighting up on my watchlist. Are you just visiting NRHP lists to insert the nbsp character? That seems unhelpful. There is no bad line-breaking happening in any of these articles' tables. If it's just that, please stop. --doncram (talk) 15:25, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm just going through my past contributions and cleaning them up using AWB. And I edited redirects to those three NRHP articles recently (AWB automatically resolved the redirects). I think that adding the  s doesn't break anything and is slightly helpful – just because you don't see any bad line breaks doesn't mean people with other resolutions or browser window sizes won't. And while I see a reason for telling me “please stop” if I was going through many of those articles (it clutters page histories and watchlists), I don't understand why would you undo my edit. Svick (talk) 16:01, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Okay, glad you understand about the issue of cluttering page histories and watchlists. In addition to those concerns, I happen to see adding nbsp's as slightly unhelpful: they add unnecessarily to page-size, which is a concern on many NRHP list-articles. The tables have been viewer-tested for a couple years now. If it's just 3 out of the thousands of NRHP list-articles, then it doesn't matter either way. Maybe it's just random that 2 were on my watchlist, and I feared u were starting on more. Thanks! All done here. --doncram (talk) 16:09, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm puzzled by the intervening edits - some seem to be a genuine attempt to add content, but others just seem odd. Dear Svick,

It looks as you have done the last edits on William Channing Woodbridge. If it is not you I should be writing to please let me know. The footnote 5 which is now missing should be a reference to the 1993 Walters article, page 44. This publication is listed above near the top of the references. I will not make the edit myself, as I do not understand how the linking system works. I would appreciate it if you or someone else could make the needed change.

If there is another thing that needs work, please let me know.

Thanks for your work.

Unlinking series title in Buffy episodes

Hi there. You have been systematically unlinking the series title in infoboxes for Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes (most recently here), with only "cleanup" as the explanation. However, the documentation for {{Infobox television episode}} clearly recommends that the series title be linked, which also seems to be the near-universal practice for other series, including in featured articles like Pilot (House) or Subway (Homicide: Life on the Street). Could you please either undo (the unlinking part of) your changes, or point to a discussion showing that consensus about recommended infobox usage has recently changed? Thanks, Hqb (talk) 06:40, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

I don't see the documentation clearly recommending it, but the example shows the show's name linked. The reason I did it was so that Template:Television colour would work (it changes the background color of headings). I guess the best way is to add new parameter Series link to {{Infobox television episode}}, so that it can both use Template:Television colour and link to the article. And document the connection to Template:Television colour (which I'm going to do right away). Do you agree? Svick (talk) 12:27, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't think of the auto-coloring at all; thanks for fixing the docs. Looks like several other series' episode boxes are broken in the same way; for example, The X Files has a designated color, but episode infoboxes like The X-Files (pilot episode) don't use it. A "Series link" parameter sounds workable, if perhaps a little inelegant, and would require updating thousands of articles. A possibly less disruptive alternative would be to list both linked and unlinked variants of the series title in {{Television colour}}, much like it's already done in {{Taxobox colour}}. Maybe this whole issue merits more discussion at Template talk:Infobox television episode? Hqb (talk) 20:21, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
I guess you're right. Even thought there is one small detail I don't like about it – you can write a link in a variety of ways, e.g. [[Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series)|Buffy the Vampire Slayer]] or [[ Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series) | Buffy the Vampire Slayer ]] (notice spaces) and they are different from {{#switch}}'s point of view. I'm going to request the change to Template:Television colour probably tomorrow and then change the Buffy episode articles back. Svick (talk) 21:08, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Looks like it's working; great job, thanks! Hqb (talk) 06:28, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Next time you do something like this, could you do me a favor? Space the changes by an hour or so. That way my automatic march through my watchlist won't be so monotonous. ;) —Tamfang (talk) 17:52, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Twinkle bug

Hi,
do you still get the error you noted in WT:Twinkle/Bugs#351, or was that a temporary fluke? I was never able to reproduce it, and even with the changed default skin nobody else seems to have that problem. I'd just blame the Usability Initiative. :)

Porting ad template to Telugu wikipedia

te.wikipedia.org is using old ad template which does not seem to cycle through more than 2 ads. Can you help port the latest template/guide me? example location of ad on my telugu talk page te:వాడుకరి:/Arjunaraoc
Arjunaraoc (talk) 08:27, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

It seems to be working to me. The template uses total number of edits on a wiki to determine which ad to show. This way, what ad is shown is quite random on a wiki as large as English Wikipedia, but it seems Telugu Wikipedia isn't edited often enough. This means that the “show another” link may not work, if it is used too often (i.e. when no edit was made since the last time it was used), but other than that, it should work fine. Svick (talk) 22:56, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. How about making the next ad display based on the time rather than edit count, so that it can be used across wikiprojects. Arjunaraoc (talk) 05:06, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Please help to fix the wiki advertisements navigation display. I have removed the old page to display the list of images assuming it is generated dynamically with the new template. Can you look at http://te.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B0%AE%E0%B1%82%E0%B0%B8:%E0%B0%B5%E0%B0%BF%E0%B0%95%E0%B1%80%E0%B0%AA%E0%B1%80%E0%B0%A1%E0%B0%BF%E0%B0%AF%E0%B0%BE_%E0%B0%AA%E0%B1%8D%E0%B0%B0%E0%B0%95%E0%B0%9F%E0%B0%A8%E0%B0%B2%E0%B1%81 and fix the same. Thanks Arjunaraoc (talk) 07:24, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
I tried to fix it, but did not succeed, it is only showing three ads in overview. Help will be appreciated. Arjunaraoc (talk) 08:05, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, the overview is generated dynamically and it should show the ads, that can be actually displayed, so if some ad isn't there, the template won't display it at all. I fixed the issue by changing the numbers. I also changed the template to use time, instead of number of edits, like you wanted. And finally, I discovered that ad #4 isn't displayed correctly in the overview, because it links to a category (it adds the page that displays the overview to that category instead of showing link) and I don't know how to fix that error. Maybe you can create a redirect to that category that isn't in the category namespace (like CAT:ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ జిల్లాలు, or with the Telugu abbreviation of “category” instead of CAT) and use it. Svick (talk) 14:16, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I have updated the problem link to the article page. Thanks also for changing to time as the input for updating the next ad. Arjunaraoc (talk) 03:56, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I hope you are doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. I have just read your profile and you seem a learned person and you also like my favorite shows so maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... and that might help saving the cheerleader in return... I'm part of an association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this has not been approved up to this moment because it does not belong to one state. We think there shouldn't be barriers between human people and knowledge but at the same time we also want to preserve our culture and language as the others which are a part of biodiversity. Hello again Svick, I was just having a nosey at your page. It seems we have a few things in common, including our taste in TV shows. If you haven't already seen it, may I recommend Breaking Bad. As far as I'm concerned it's TV's best kept secret. Here in the UK it aired on FX, and hardly anyone I know has seen it. In the US it's an award winning show, which has just finished airing season 3. If you are like me, and you haven't heard of Breaking Bad, DON'T READ ABOUT IT FIRST! It's full of surprizes. All I'll say is it's a very dark black comedy. Těší mě! Speedy deletion nomination of Tift County Schools

A tag has been placed on Tift County Schools requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Tamer of hope (talk) 17:30, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

This is not an article, but a redirect, so CSD A3 does not apply. In any case, I think this redirect is useful, so I removed the deletion template and fixed it. If you still think it should be deleted, you can send it to WP:RfD. Svick (talk) 18:50, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I wasn't sure how to classify a redirect deletion. But all of the pages that once pointed towards that page are linked to the right page. So that redirect page is just sitting there in limbo. Tamer of hope (talk) 23:53, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
I guess you are right, I tagged it as CSD G7, but now that I read what exactly that means, I'm not sure that applies either. Svick (talk) 00:28, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Category Watchlist

Hi, I get a runtime error when I go to the Category Watchlist. Don't know whether that is a transient error or not, but thought I should let you know. (Great tool, thanks!). --Crusio (talk) 08:08, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, sorry about that. The hosting I use was supposed to shut down and I screwed up when trying to back it up. But since it seems it didn't shut down yet, I'll try to bring it back and look for a more permanent solution. Svick (talk) 11:51, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Okay, it should work for now, but I'm not sure how long will it last. Svick (talk) 12:19, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Looks like it's down again... Have you been able to find another solution? I use this tool daily and miss it greatly... --Crusio (talk) 00:16, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
It's finally up. The address is http://svick.org/CatWatch.aspx. I restored a backup from 6 July there, so you will have to redo any changes in your list since then (if any) and all category changes since then will be listed today. Svick (talk) 16:22, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Wonderful!! Many thanks! --Crusio (talk) 16:36, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
The times displayed in the "last updated" column probably need to be fixed, as the timestamp currently says "6 Aug 2010 00:10:00" when the last check was at 09:10 CEST (at list "LeaguesAndCups" for the category "2009–10 domestic association football leagues" just in case it is relevant). I would naively assume that the time zone of the server is incorrectly put at PDT or something like that, so could you please check that? ^^" In any case, thank you very much for this useful tool!!! :-) Cheers, Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 07:41, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I know about that. When I switched to the new domain, the server's timezone changed too. What's wrong with PDT? And why is it better than CEST? I'll look into how to make this better. Svick (talk) 18:04, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
It is a little confusing for unsuspecting users when times are not displayed in their actual time zone.^^ Hm, how about just adding a note at the top of the lists declaring that "all times are listed in UTC−07:00" or something similar? That would probably be the easiest1 solution. --Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 18:15, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
1Again, I don't know your code - such a note might as well be more difficult to implement than I assume...
It should show your local time, if you have JavaScript on, and time in UTC and a note about it otherwise. Could you check that it works for you? Thanks. Svick (talk) 23:24, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response, I was (and still am) pretty busy over the weekend. As for the timestamp, it works like a charm now. Thanks a lot! --Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 10:00, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Help needed on a database scan - part 2

Hi, maybe you could help me with the following:

  • All talk pages that have more than one instance of {{WikiProjectBannerShell}} or one of its redirects including {{WikiProjectBanners}} and its redirects.
  • Articles that have [[en: in their body. AWB fails to fix these cases at the moment.

Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 07:11, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, the latest dump I have is pages-articles from June. It is probably corrupted (that's why it's not available anymore), but I think that's better than using the January dump. Because of that, I can't scan talk pages, so to scan for the WPBS I would have to get all the 140,000 pages from the API. But I think that's not that bad, and I could do that if you want. Or I could wait until the current dump is finished (that should be few days, I guess).
Do you want to include articles that have the [[en: inside a comment (like SSB)?
Svick (talk) 19:02, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
List of articles with [[en: from the June dump is at [2]. Svick (talk) 21:38, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Category intersection

I'm writing to you because you seem to be a category expert.

I'm interested in looking at an example of an article about an economics book that is an FA or GA.

I can easily find Category:Economics books, and Category:Featured articles, so obviously, I simply need to find the intersection. I suspect this is easy, but I don't know how to do it.--SPhilbrickT 13:59, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

You can use CatScan to find that there are no articles that match your criteria. Svick (talk) 14:21, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks - I tried "good" article, and can find some examples that meet my needs.--SPhilbrickT 14:51, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'm just using the examples to search for stuff. I don't know where else to do this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fuzzdrone (talkcontribs) 15:18, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

In that case, you should use the tool that actually chooses the page directly: random article from erwin85 and not edit the documentation. Svick (talk) 15:22, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

I have no idea what to put in the 'project' box. It gives me errors when I try to use that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fuzzdrone (talkcontribs) 15:32, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Enter en in the first box (that's the code for English) and keep the second as it is (so that it says .wikipedia.org). Svick (talk) 15:36, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Need a tool written

Hi, I notice you have written a few tools so though you would be a good person to ask. Is there a page where I can request a tool to be written?

I require a tool to go through pages in a category and summaries the templates used in those pages. I need is a list of how often each template is used in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of people (and later others), so that I can then add the most common to User:People-photo-bot and move those pages to a subcategory.--Traveler100 (talk) 11:54, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

I think the best page to request that is Wikipedia talk:Database reports.
This seems simple enough, I could do that. What exactly do you want to know? Counts of all templates on pages in that category? Or just WikiProject banners? Svick (talk) 20:02, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Just WikiProject banners. For example, how many articles have {{WikiProject Baseball}} on it and so on. What I am looking for is which templates to addressed first that will make the most impact. --Traveler100 (talk) 20:43, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

One last problem, between Ottoman Dynasty-Occupation and Occupation-Republic there's a black line, but this line is not seen between "Vassals of Seljuks"-"under the Mongols" and "Saruhan"-"Ottoman dynasty". These lines seperate different periods of history of Turkey, so it's critical. Can you add only these 2 lines? Kavas (talk) 19:01, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Regarding Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Dermatology task force/Articles created

Thank you so much for creating that page. It automatically updates perfectly! Also, I wanted to know, can you design it so there is a third column that indicates either "Article" or "Redirect"? ---kilbad (talk) 18:44, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Have a look at Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates. Personally, I don't think lists as the one you linked are useful. Svick (talk) 18:11, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Largest categories

Thanks alot for your help (from the Help Desk) man!

That category which couldn't be counted into the list is "Incomplete articles" - I'm thinking it's probably been set to behave this way on purpose, to not be included in certain queries.

I'd like to be so daring as to ask you for the code you use to run such queries;

I would like to use it to run more queries, such as getting the first 2000 categories (since most of the top categories are of Stub-topics and other "beaurocratic" matters), as well as a list of categories by total/average article size (kilobytes), etc. etc.

I promise to give credit if I ever publish any of the results anywhere, or also, publish them here on wiki somewhere.

Would that be ok? 85.250.35.206 (talk) 18:51, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

I could send you the code if you really wanted (it's in C#), but I think it would be better if you read about the API (that's how you access Wikipedia programmatically) and probably used one of the available libraries (that page talks about bots, but it applies to other programs too).
Also, I have updated the list of largest categories on hewiki, so that it now lists 2000 of them.

Edits to Mathematical Geophysics

Svick, I am new to writing Wikipedia articles and I don't understand the purpose of your recent edits. Could you please explain them to me? RockMagnetist (talk) 02:18, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

You mean why I added ref = harv to {{cite book}}s in that article? It's so that the references created using {{harvnb}} linked correctly to the corresponding line in References. If you click on one of the references (e.g. “Pedlosky 1987”), the page will be moved to the correct line in references (although that's not very visible in this article) and that line will be highlighted. See also the explanation of the ref parameter at Template:Cite book#Description. Svick (talk) 17:49, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I copied the style of reference from somewhere, and I didn't even know why the Harvnb was there. RockMagnetist (talk) 22:05, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Devanagari Template

I'm curious why you used a mathematical approach to {{Devanagari}}. Wouldn't a series of 10 replace statements (e.g. {{#replace:{{#replace:{{{1}}}|0|०}}|1|१}}) have been simpler and more flexible? Or is there more to Devanagari than straight digit substitution? —RobinHood70 (talkcontribs) 22:12, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Because AFAIK, there is no {{#replace}}. Generally, string manipulation in wikicode is very limited and, if it works at all, it's quite expensive (see e.g. {{str rep}}, that kind of does what your {{#replace}} does, except only for the first occurrence). I think the code is relatively understandable and simple (of course what it does is simple too). If you think there is a better way to do it, feel free to edit the template. Svick (talk) 22:48, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, you're right. (Didn't even notice I forgot to <nowiki> that, making it obvious that it doesn't work here.) It's normally part of the ParserFunctions/StringFunctions extension (see here), but it would appear at a glance that they've disabled the StringFunctions portion of it here. It's enabled at all of the other wikis I use, so I just took it for granted that it was here as well and never thought to look. Looking around, it looks like at some point, it either was or was intended to be enabled here, but clearly it's not now. Thanks for the reply and education. :) —RobinHood70 (talkcontribs) 23:11, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Small issue with DropDownToTabs.js

I have found a small, cosmetic issue with the DropDownToTabs.js script, when used in conjunction with Gadget-purgetab.js; In Internet Explorer, "Purge" is shown smaller then the other tabs, and misaligned as well. Checking the HTML source, I see the IE wraps the "Purge" list item in an extra, duplicate <span>, causing the span's style to be applied twice. I do not see it in Chrome. Enwiki category dump

Do you know if there is an enwiki category dump (I just need article titles in categories, not the actual content of articles)? I can't find a categorylinks enwiki dump at http://download.wikimedia.org/backup-index.html .Smallman12q (talk) 16:01, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

It's there, the last one is enwiki-20101011-categorylinks.sql.gz from the 11 October dump. Although the dump only contains page ids, so you are probably going to need page.sql.gz too. Svick (talk) 16:08, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. Do you happen to know how large they'll be uncompressed? (more or less than 50GB?)Smallman12q (talk) 16:25, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
My guess is that they should be less than that, but it's just a guess. Alternatively, you don't have to import them in a databse, but use my Wikipedia SQL dump parser (if you can program in .NET). Svick (talk) 16:40, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
I've written a php script at User:Smallman12q/CleanupListing.php that would create a cleanup table similar to the one at Wikipedia:Wine/Reports/Cleanup by article for Sep 2010(0). I don't have a toolserver account, and am not terribly comfortable with MySQL. I wanted to know if you'd be willing to look over the script and give it a go/debug it. It's only about 150 lines...its pretty much several nested foreach statements with a few SQL commands. It would be much appreciated.Smallman12q (talk) 23:33, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
I see you played around with the script a bit...did you get it to work on the toolserver in creating a working mysql table? Printing the output is fairly trivial...building the table is the hardest part.Smallman12q (talk) 22:15, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Getting a toolserver account is quite easy (I got mine very recently), so you might want to get one for yourself. Anyway, I fixed some issues with the script (you can't do cross-table update, when you don't have update right on both tables; WikiProject categories contain talk pages; and other smaller) and it seems to work now. The list of pages with catnumber > 0 is at [5]. Also, I noticed that some categories in the list (like the first one – Category:Articles with invalid date parameter in template) don't have monthly subcategories. Svick (talk) 23:27, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

- I'd get an account if they didn't require rl-authentication. Anyhow, you got the script to work...(you'll get a barnstar for that =D). As for the categories without the monthly subs, I took them from Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month with a C# script...so those without subs should be removed from the php script and from that category.

Would you be willing to run this script nightly/weekly for relevant wikiprojects (once the variables are in, you could simply set a cron job for it). How should the tables be "shown"...should they be converted to wikicode and posted here...or should we show them with html/javascript? How would the info be archived(perhaps dumped into some directory as .sql.gz) Lastly...could you create a table similar to Wikipedia:Wine/Reports/Cleanup by category for Sep 2010(0)...it would essentially copy the article table, add a date column, update both tables, and at the end of cat remove rows where date column is null. Also it seems some of the article titles aren't displaying right...is that simply from printing the dump? Your thoughts and support are appreciated! Let me know what I can do to help. Smallman12q (talk) 00:49, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, running it periodically is no problem for me.
Showing the tables directly on toolserver would be the easier, so I'd probably go with that.
As for the archives, that depends on why you want them and what you want to do with them. But I think adding another column to the generated database would be best – that way, you can easily compute statistics or show old versions of the table.
That another report – that's exactly why I thought that having one column with the list of categories is a bad idea. Another table with a foreign key is much better.
As for the display problem – I think it's just that. My Firefox seems to show the names correctly (including e.g. Blóðughófi). Try setting it to show as UTF8.
As for your help, I would welcome it if you did anything of the stuff we're discussing, I'm probably going to work on in tomorrow.
Svick (talk) 18:36, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
You're right...works under UTF8. I don't have time to work on it today...but I should have time tmrw/friday. I'd propose the following folder structure:
root/cleanuplisting/project index.txt
root/cleanuplisting/project/archives...
root/cleanuplisting/project/report.txt
root/cleanuplisting/project/static pages with tables
root/cleanuplisting/project/html table w/js & css

in archives
root/cleanuplisting/project/archives/index.txt
root/cleanuplisting/project/archives/project-date.sql.gz

The tables would be archived at the end of run and dropped at each new run(or at end of run...depends on table sorter). Foreign keys would be good...though I'm not familiar enough with sql to know how to make it work with a list of categories. Once we get this worked out, I'd like to fix up the taskforce category(basically scan the parent WikiProject category for "task force/taskforce"), add another column for pageviews, and add the other relevant cats from Category:Wikipedia maintenance. I'll also write up the code for displaying and sorting the tables (table sorter). Thanks for helping me with this project=DSmallman12q (talk) 23:19, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

I have worked on it a bit and you can see the results at [6] and [7]. The code is at [8]. I still don't understand why do you want to have archives in separate files (when you can keep them in the database forever, if you mark them with a timestamp) and I ignored the rest of your proposed folder structure too (at least for now). Svick (talk) 01:52, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
Look's good. Don't worry about the directory layout...I'd just like to have a snapshot dump archived somewhere at the end of each run...(would make it easier to generate stats in the future). Also, there doesn't really seem to be a need to have a dynamically generated file...you could simply create static .html files at the end of the run rather than "CleanupListingByCat.php?project=Equine". Add a few more columns (# of categories, pageviews, task force), a table sorter, and a csv output and we're done. Great job thus far...will try to improve tmrw.Smallman12q (talk) 02:35, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
I think most of it is done now. Notes:
  1. The URLs changed a bit, there is a new index at [9].
  2. I think dynamic pages are better, because they are easier to write and things like sorting work well there.
  3. I don't know how to get pageviews in a reasonable way (parsing [10] seems like too much work for little benefit).
  4. I don't know how to get taskforces, because there doesn't seems to be any standard way to get taskforces of certain WikiProject.
  5. Dumping each run into a file would make it harder to create statistics than in the current system. E.g. to get the counts of categories for certain article for all past runs, you can simply use a query like this:
    mysql> select time, (select count(*) from categories where categories.article_id = articles.id) as count from runs join articles on runs.id = articles.run_id where article = 'Donkey';
    +---------------------+-------+
    | time | count |
    +---------------------+-------+
    | 2010-10-31 17:03:38 | 10 |

But in your system, you would have to parse several files.

Random Break

You've done a fine job at bringing this project to life. I made a small commit (I haven't used git style forking/pushing/pulling before). For the csv, couldn't you use mysql OUTFILE? Otherwise, it looks fine to me. We should start a sub page of where to list participating wikiprojects, and report bugs/feature requests. Thanks a lot Svick!Smallman12q (talk) 22:10, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Regarding git, you should set your username and email (see e.g. [11]), so that you can see from the commit who made it. The email doesn't have to be an actual e-mail address, but it can be something like smallman12q@enwiki, if you prefer.
I have created the subpage, but I think listing the WikiProjects is better left for toolserver (so that there is no additional work with keeping the list up to date).
I don't know how OUTFILE works, so maybe it could be used. But I don't see the point of doing that, when CSV already works.
Svick (talk) 23:31, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
I set up my git settings. The program looks good to go...except for one thing:At CleanupListing.php, it doesn't seem that the line

$sql = "SELECT id FROM projects WHERE name = $project"; is right. Did you mean $project_name? Also please be sure to use mysql_real_escape_string() to prevent mysql injections. OUTFILE is relatively simple (and significantly faster), though it's not for dynamic pages. If you want a simple example see this stackoverflow question.

Please put a note at the village pump asking people to sign up their wikiproject (or sign them up manually...or I'll put a note=P). Thanks again for making this a reality=DSmallman12q (talk) 23:28, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

You could start by including the wikiprojects listed at Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions.Smallman12q (talk) 00:12, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Good catch about that bug. It should be fixed now and I have (hopefully) fixed the SQL injections too. I'll do the rest later (probably tomorrow). Svick (talk) 00:23, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
I see you started making some reports for some of the WikiProjects...are you entering these in by hand (its an odd selection atm). Why is sociology not showing class/importance? Also, I filed a bug report for firefox for not rendering the table correctly. Have you set up a cron job for the program to run every day or week?Smallman12q (talk) 00:56, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
I have added all the WikiProjects from the WolterBot's category, but not all projects follow the same naming scheme for their categories, so not all of them show in the table for now. Svick (talk) 18:26, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Just curious...how long does it take to generate the cleanup table for the wikiproject? Offline, I was able to do mine in about 3-4 seconds with a Hashset. Is there anything else that needs work for this script...or does it just need a few more logic statements to handle non-conforming projects?Smallman12q (talk) 02:12, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
The varies greatly, depending on the size of the project. Until now, for huge project like WikiProject Ships it took 20 minutes. I have optimized it now, so it should take only about 4 minutes. And I have to now run it completely without encountering an error and then fix the non-conforming projects. Svick (talk) 16:39, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
A LIKE is certainly faster than a loop=PSmallman12q (talk) 17:09, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
Everything should be working, except some projects don't have classes now, but for most of them they will be added on the next run. I have set it up so that the listing for every project is updated once a week. I'm going to start the spamming of all WikiProjects I have added and some wider talk pages. Svick (talk) 17:45, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Did you add support for non-month categories? If so, you could add some more cats from Category:Wikipedia maintenance. Also, as the cleanup by cat doesn't have sorting...should we add a javascript table sorter? (Nice TOC btw...could do some simple stats in the future). Looks good thus far!Smallman12q (talk) 00:11, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Also, if the program is done, should we write something for the Wikipedia Signpost?Smallman12q (talk) 00:31, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Kind of, I have added support for categories that have only year, not month (see e.g. [12]). Having categories completely without dating would require some more work. I have just added sorting to listing by category too, although not by month (because of the way I get it from the database). Regarding Signpost, I have no idea. Svick (talk) 00:40, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Random Break 2

I could write a short blurb for signpost. No reason your work shouldn't be recognized=P.

Svick has created a WikiProject cleanup listing for wikiprojects at the toolserver. The program written in PHP and MYSQL will run weekly and provide list all articles that are currently tagged for cleanup/maintenance. The list which is available by wikiproject, category, by category month, by article name, article quality, and article importance is also available in CSV. The program will act as a replacement for WolterBot and supersede CleanupLisitngBot. The original PHP/MYSQL prototype was coded by Smallman12q who will help maintain the code. The source is available at github. To add your WikiProject, please leave a note here.

If the above is fine, I'll submit it to Signpost for the Technology Report section. Smallman12q (talk) 01:01, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

At CleanupListingByCat, should it be GROUP BY as opposed to "ORDER BY year, month"?Smallman12q (talk) 14:12, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
No, ORDER BY is correct. It's so that the month column is the oldest month for that category, if there are more. Svick (talk) 22:06, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, the text looks fine. One thing though, is CleanupListingBot worth mentioning? It seems you just made few tests with it. If people know about it (and are expecting it), then it seems like a useful information, but I think not otherwise. Svick (talk) 22:06, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
Well it was fully working...but as it only made a handful of test listings...I agree that there's no need to mislead. I've made the posting at Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/Newsroom/Suggestions#November_1.E2.80.93. Cheers!Smallman12q (talk) 01:00, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
