File:Louis A. McCall, Sr.jpg listed for deletion

I just read the notice you sent me on September 9, 2012 about this file being tagged for deletion by it looks like a bot for an invalid PD tag and the link to the discussion if I didn't want it deleted, but it looks like it was already deleted. Can I ask what was invalid about it's PD tag and how long is it usually between a bot tagging a file for deletion and it being deleted? Kmanblue (talk) 07:17, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

I don't remember the specifics of that file. Later today I'll have an admin look at it and give me the details, and then get back to you. As to the second part of the question, deletion discussions last for one week. Sven Manguard Wha? 18:22, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
Did you ever find out why this file was deleted? Kmanblue (talk) 02:41, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
You used a custom PD template with the reasoning "No expressed copyright was ever asserted". Copyright comes into play the moment the work is either taken or published, depending on the jurisdiction; it does not need to be asserted. Therefore the file was not PD. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:20, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

hello)

excuse me, please. i just happened across the file Desnianskyi Raion Central Clinic.jpg and have denied access for your bot to it, as the attribution license is not right to be applied here, it seems. it is "all rights reserved" and there is not a word about allowing commercial use anyway on the site. am i to nominate the file for the deletion? even if a photographer is all right with releasing his work into public domain, we (Ukraine) do not have freedom of panorama... or is there some kind of a fairuse license to use? i am not an active user here, so some tricky situations usually catch me off guard) but i do not see any reason to move it to commons, where it will be deleted all the same... and just some needless work done(( --antanana 18:11, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

So the bot, being a program, can't really tell if a license is accurate or not. I, being a non-Ukranian speaker, can't really verify anything myself. My thinking, however, is this: If the building itself was commissioned/built by the government of the city of Kiev, then the government of the city of Kiev does in fact have the right to release that image, because even without freedom of panorama the government of the city of Kiev still owns the copyright. It's tricky, especially since the source link doesn't exist and wayback doesn't cover it, but my gut feeling is to leave it as is. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:53, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
i do know the bot's limits) run one myself. that's why i wanted to talk to a person made of "flesh and blood", so to say)) we do not download such images to commons, keep them locally only and tag them with "NoCommons|nofop". and maybe there was written smth like "you-may-use-the-materials-but-you-are-to-mention-us" before, but it won't really do as an attribution, as there is no "for-whatever-reason-you-want". or at least i was told there should be such a clear statement included. and i agree, actually... but i am glad i am not to nominate it for a deletion, by the way. kind of treason it would feel anyway... thanks) and sorry for all the trouble --antanana 09:44, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Guidance on slowly rolling out pending changes

Regarding this edit:

Yes, but because I have no confidence that without such a statement, PC will be applied rapidly and somewhat carelessly by some of its staunchest opponents.

Literally, I think the statement is saying that unless a statement on slowly rolling out pending changes is made, you do not believe pending changes will be applied rapidly and somewhat carelessly by those who oppose pending changes. In other words, you believe pending changes will not be applied rapidly and somewhat carelessly by those who oppose it? Did you mean to say that you believe without such a statement, pending changes will be applied rapidly and somewhat carelessly by some of its staunchest proponents (supporters)? - Isaacl 18:13, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out. Sven Manguard Wha? 18:52, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Free copy of Civilization V for an FA

This contest is now over. The free copy of Civilization V was won by Futuretrillionaire for bringing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to Featured Article status.
Do you want a free copy of Civilization 5?

As part of a Steam pre-order deal for XCOM: Enemy Unknown I have just received a free copy of Civilization V, a top notch turn-based strategy game. Because I already owned a copy, I am free to gift the new one to anyone with a steam account. That anyone can be you.

Below is a list of some of my favorite games that are of C class or below. I will give my copy of Civilization V to the first user that brings any of the following articles to FA status:

If none of the articles above have made it to at least the stage of a good faith Featured article candidates run by the end of the year, I will expand the list to include some of my favorites that are ranked B or above:

If none of the articles from the first section make it to the stage of a good faith Featured article candidates run by the end of the year, but one of articles from the second was promoted before the end of the year, the nominator will instantly become eligible to claim my copy of Civilization V. If no game on either of the two lists makes it to FA status by April 6, 2013 (six months from the start of this competition) I will give my copy of Civilization V to the first user that brings any role playing or strategy game to FA status.

You must leave me a message on my user talk page in order to claim the prize.

Disclaimers: I only have one copy, so if you're going to work with someone else, you need to decide ahead of time who gets the game. I can only deliver the game via Steam. By receiving the game, you agree to never disclose any information that Steam transmits along with the game. I haven't read the terms of service closely enough to know if this transaction is a violation of them. If for any reason I lose the ability to gift the game, I am under no obligation to replace it; the competition is simply canceled. I reserve the right to add more games to the above lists.

Good luck. Sven Manguard Wha? 02:22, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

P.S. I am aware that some people will dislike this because it gets too close to "paid editing". I have no affiliation with anyone involved in any of these games. The selection was (essentially) completely arbitrary. The idea itself came about only because I had the game through the pre-order. If it were a different game that I recieved, I would be offering a different game. Please don't bombard my talk page if you think this is a bad idea; simply choose not to participate.

OTRS Question

I was curious if you could give me some more information regarding this edit summary. I don't have an account so I can't see what the problem is with the ticket. -Thibbs (talk) 17:23, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Very nice idea above, by the way. If I had more time (and a Steam account) I'd be quite tempted. If you'd like to move this message of mine above the contest in order to highlight it better then please feel free. -Thibbs (talk) 17:23, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
They gave us permission to use the logo on Wikipedia, but balked at releasing the logo under a free license. Since 'Wikipedia use only' is not an acceptable restriction, we cannot consider the ticket valid or the image freely licensed. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:47, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
I see. Thanks for clearing that up. -Thibbs (talk) 18:26, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Commons

Sven, I'd also like you to consider the approach currently being taken on Commons by Fastily. Having already threatened me on my own Commons talk page, insulted me (and left a snide comment in the edit summary), he has now stalked me to Deniss's talk page and continued to harrass me further with smears. Could you perhaps drop a friendly word in his shell-like that he could perhaps refrain from the continued ad hominem attacks before feelings start getting overheated and out of control? Many thanks - SchroCat (^@) 12:46, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Sudeki

Hi Sven,

I saw your free game offer. I'm not a PC gamer (my gaming consists of playing games from a large library of PS1/PS2 games, I'm stuck in the damn past, I know) but I thought I'd have a shot at some basic improvements to some games articles. From your list, I saw that Sudeki had no references. It now does. Thanks for nudging me to edit something out of my usual areas. Good luck with the running of the contest. —Tom Morris (talk) 12:46, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Awesome to hear. Sudeki is in poorer shape than most of those articles. Sven Manguard Wha? 15:24, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
P.S. Thanks for the encouragement on the contest. I will consider it a success if someone claims the prize. Everything else is just personal preference. Sorry that there are no PS1/PS2 games on the list, my first console was an N64 and I've never owned any of the PlayStations.

Wikipedia Loves Libraries (BPL Dorchester)

Hey Sven. I was just browsing through the Boston area meetups, and I saw the event on 10 Nov at the Dorcester branch didn't have a page yet. Is that a for-certain event, or is it still up in the air? I'd love to come and participate at one of the events, but I'm scheduled to work during the others. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Ishdarian 05:56, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

It now has a page. See Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston Public Library/Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012 for details. Hope to see you there. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:58, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

I just want to say that(thanks to the VG Newsletter) I am thinking about entering your contest, using Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones as my article of choice. I don't have a deep history with Fire Emblem, only playing Shadow Dragon, but my brother loves this game and has been begging me to play it for forever. I find it sad that this article has barely been touched in 3 years, only having routine maintenance and the addition of a simple Development section. Blake (Talk·Edits) 03:52, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

That's good to hear. Shadow Dragon wasn't nearly as good, in my opinion, as either of the two GBA Fire Emblem games, which have smaller casts of characters, and therefore can expend the time to build up the characters, and their personalities, much more. The two GBA ones are also much more tactically complex. You should enjoy them if you like turn based games. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:31, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

important updates at Messi's page

there is important discussion about messi's page at [footbal]

the discussion about :

1-adding back the assists which have been removed ( and i think its really important ) especially most notable players have it and even less known player than messi have this statistics which is important for any striker .(remember the debate about messi vs ronalod have lots about messi makes more assists than ronaldo )

2-adding back the youth and under -23 goals because they are different statistics from senior one and u cant merge them together . since fifa themself separate them differently .

3-about the table of messi goals and if its important info or just long statistics(useless one).

Thank you all . adnantalk 12 pm 16 october 2012 (UTC)

I will not be getting involved in this. Furthermore, if you're going to deliver a mass invitation to participate in a discussion, you must refrain from making judgements and trying to sway the discussion in the invitation itself. Otherwise you're canvassing. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:02, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:59, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Ada

Hey Sven, I figured continuing the conversation there was a little bit moot, but that's great! I think most of the stuff coming out of Ada day didn't make it to DYK, but at least there's a lot more bluelinks. =] It's inspired me to go raid the library for obscure biographical dictionaries of female scientists, at the very least! Keilana|Parlez ici 01:08, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Cool. I wish you luck in that endeavor. Sven Manguard Wha?

XCOM:EU

Expansion tag was arbitrary (one user thought it's not enough, while I think it's enough, and I've seen no sources discuss it any further anyway, and I didn't play the game while all the others thousands users every day also didn't write even one more word there) and is not listed among the quick-fail tags.

Now go and re-nominate. --Niemti (talk) 08:55, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

My one word answer wasn't an attempt at being cute, it was my attempt at responding to you without saying anything I might regret. If you want my cooperation, ordering me to do something isn't going to get it. At this point, it's worth mentioning, you could act quite nicely and I still wouldn't do it; any chance of us having a functional working relationship ended with your last post, I want nothing further to do with you. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:16, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

On new accounts

When you ran for administrator a while back, I knew that you had a previous account (per your disclosure) but didn't know which account it was, and didn't ask. I had (and have) no idea whether it was a clean start, an RTV that you changed your mind about, or what. I supported your candidacy regardless, based on your positive contributions with your current account. I'm sure you recall that other, less trusting editors opposed your candidacy because of the previous account.

To have you then turn around and ask a loaded, insulting question like this to another editor during their RfA feels like a bit of a slap in the face, to be honest. 28bytes (talk) 22:50, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

The difference between a cleanstart and an RTV is that a cleanstart doesn't bury evidence. Sure, you can have your userpage deleted, but the talk page is always there where it was left, the edit history of articles is never changed, and it's the account is still searchable. When someone uses RTV they all but disappear. It's a process many people don't even know about, it edits article histories, it deletes talk pages, it makes searching the user almost impossible if you don't already know what the rename was to. In short, RTV is tremendously powerful. That's why it's explicit that someone never comes back from a cleanstart, and implicit that if they do, they unhide their old account immediately. Abusing RTV hurts the project because Wikipedia is built on transparent attribution, and that is only broken in extreme and rare cases. There is no way that Rlevse's flagrant abuse of RTV can be framed in any other way than that he was being unethical and manipulating process. Yes, that question was loaded and hostile. That was intentional. That don't regret that, because I don't trust him, and I don't trust that he won't dodge the question if I give him any room to do so. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:19, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
One day, when there's not an RfA from a RTV abuser running, I'd be willing to share the reason why I'm so hostile to people that abuse RTV, and why Rlevse in particular set off my hostility so strongly. As odd as this might sound to you, I don't want to poison the RfA by bringing in an incident which, as far as I know, Rlevse was only minorly involved in. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:25, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate the considered response. Thank you as well for this conciliatory edit. For now, let me just say that I look forward to meeting again on a talk page in happier circumstances. Best, 28bytes (talk) 23:36, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi Sven!

Continuing the thanks for your conciliatory edits, I want to thank you for graciously reconsidering the "grow a pair" issue. About the remaining MF issue, I understand that at times I am an irritant, particularly when confined to ArbCom-related pages, etc. However, I wouldn't like to be accused of irritating "everyone", and I have far less thank yous on my talk page then MF.

Oblivion, er, umm, Civilization V awaits?

Hey Sven, was stopping by the Reward Board to add my contest and stumbled upon yours. I decided that, being a fan of the game, Oblivion would be a nice choice to improve to FA. Seeing that the article is within a kilobyte of its size at the end of its fifth FAC I'll start working on fixing errors listed here. I realize I have some competition, but it's not that important if I get the game.

Beatrice Hicks

Would you please revisit Template:Did you know nominations/Beatrice Hicks? Your article is slightly short of the minimum length but is otherwise ready to go. Nyttend (talk) 03:33, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the extra content (I've approved it), but I wasn't trying to force you to find extra information. Rather, I had assumed that you'd add little bits of text here and there, e.g. "Additionally, " at the start of the final sentence or "their " before "structural limits". Nyttend (talk) 17:08, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
And no, I don't do GA reviews. I have a few GA credits, but that doesn't mean that I understand the process; when I nominated one early last month, it got failed because I used a professional style of writing ("too difficult to understand!") and because I refused to speculate on a subject that my sources said was uncertain. Nyttend (talk) 21:20, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
If that's an accurate representation of the criticism that the article received at the GAN, your reviewer... is... erm... broken. Sven Manguard Wha? 21:22, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
I found the review: Talk:Ellerbusch Site/GA1. I'd ask for a re-review on WT:GAN, since MathewTownsend (talk · contribs) failed to apply WP:RS, WP:V, and WP:WIAGA. Reaper Eternal (talk) 13:06, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Seconded. There's absolutely no question in my mind that the review was botched. Mind you, I haven't looked at the article yet, but I see several issues withe the review, especially the "Is it factually accurate and verifiable?" section. This is also Sven Manguard 16:04, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Hmm. Thanks! I was angry about the situation early on, but I decided that it wasn't a big enough deal to worry about trying again, especially since I didn't know (1) how long I was supposed to wait between nominations, and (2) whether he might re-review it and make the renomination pointless. Thanks for waiting (if you did!)
The original post was to let Wikipedians know that NYT were removing their paywall.
The reason for that was, to allow free access due to Hurricane Sandy.
I told people here that NYT was available - that's all; someone misconstrued it as their paywall being down because of the hurricane. It's not; they've just allowed free access.
The ensuing argument was pointless, and yes you were right to collapse it; however, the original point - that NYT is currently not 'paywalled' - is worthy of note on t'pump.
I hope you agree and understand. 88.104.5.244 (talk) 02:13, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Just drop it. Seriously, all you're doing is escalating the situation. People can see that the paywall is down by looking at the section header. Sven Manguard Wha? 02:16, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Please, don't 'edit war' over such a silly thing.

I was just letting people know that NYT was freely available - that's it. The rest is just misunderstanding, or 'trolling', or whatever...

Point remains - NYT is 'free' for now; surely that's useful for people to know? And that's all - no ulterior motive. 88.104.5.244 (talk) 02:18, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Please, stop and look at my edit, and what I said there. Just, that NYT is available. Is all. The argument is silly - totally beside the point. You collapsed the silly argument - cool. But the fact that NYT is available... that's not an arguable issue; it's a good thing. 88.104.5.244 (talk) 02:35, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
...and now both of you have 48 hour blocks for edit warring. This is why I (tried) to stop the discussion when I did. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:41, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

FAC for Shunzhi Emperor

Hi Sven! Shunzhi Emperor is now a featured article candidate. Since your GA review, I've moved lots of detail about Dorgon's military campaigns to Manchu conquest of China and Southern Ming dynasty, expanded the sections on "Factional politics" and "Foreign relations," and created new sections on Shunzhi's "Chinese style of rule" and his "Campaigns against the Southern Ming." I think that makes the coverage complete. Since you're the editor who is most familiar with that page, your comments would be most welcome! The review page is here. Cheers, Madalibi (talk) 04:24, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi again. The FA review is starting slowly, and one or two editors are wondering what you meant by your message about "not making a formal support." I'm not sure you're watching the review page, so I just wanted to let you know, so that you can clarify what you meant if you think you need to. Cheers, Madalibi (talk) 00:26, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you with this, but you're the only active editor I know who has experience (in your case, much more than that!) at Commons. Yesterday at the Shunzhi FAC, Nikkimaria requested that a US PD tag be added to most of the images. Since I've never uploaded images on WP or Commons, I'm not too familiar with all the copyright tags available. I tried to read some policy on this, but I couldn't reach a conclusion. WP:ICT/All says that "Whenever an image is tagged using one of these tags [like "PD-China"], the image description page should also contain some rationale as to whether and why the image is presumed to be in the public domain in the U.S., too!" And the "PD-art" template as it displays in files like Shunzhi.jpg|File:Emperor_Shunzhi.jpg says that "You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States." So two questions: (1) What is the proper US PD tag for this: an independent tag or some insert in the "PD-art" tag? And, (2) where should I insert it: as basic text in the information template or as a tag in the licensing section? I'm sure these are basic questions, and I'm embarrassed to be unable to answer them after years on the Wiki, but I'd rather ask stupid questions to an expert than commit basic mistakes! Thanks a lot for your help! Madalibi (talk) 13:05, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
I dislike sticking separate licenses inside the PD-Art template, with the exception of the PD-old-100 template, because the template that's in there to start with isn't nation-specific, and so I think the replacement shouldn't be either. Both putting licenses in the PD-Art template and putting them right below the PD-Art template are equally correct, however.
As for where to place all the license templates, they can either be placed in the section of the Template:Information template, or in the license section below the Template:Information template, but they should all be kept together.
Finally, as to the most important question of which license to choose, you should always choose the broadest license that you can, i.e. the one that applies to the largest number of countries. In the case of anything that's over 100 years old, that is always {{PD-old-100}}, because that makes it public domain everywhere, I think. PD-old-100 does function as a "why it's PD in the US" license. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:35, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Done I should have done it during the GAN, I don't know why I didn't. You can look over my changes if my explanation above wasn't as clear as I wanted it to be. Sometimes they're not... Sven Manguard Wha? 18:03, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for the helpful and clear instructions! I now feel confident enough to upload images to Commons on my own. And thanks for taking care of the changes, of course. Cheers, Madalibi (talk) 01:49, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Up for some Commons transfers?

See [1]. A list of files on Wikipedia which are in use on Wikivoyage. Maybe you could help checking if the images comply with Commons policies, and if so, move the files to Commons from Wikipedia and then tag with "NowCommons" on both Wikipedia and Wikivoyage? You signed up at Commons:Commons:Wikivoyage Shared transfer task force; this is something you could help with. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:52, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

I started the task force  . Your list looks almost done, and I really don't have time today. I will help when I can though. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:07, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
It's also incomplete: new files are added all of the time. One task I'm doing is locating files which have been copied from Commons and Wikipedia in thumbnail format & I find quite a lot of them, including some images to add to that list. --Stefan2 (talk) 22:15, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
Also, in case you're interested, I've got a partially working wts.wikivoyage.wiki file for FTCG. However, it needs some extra cleanup afterwards: "wts" language code for descriptions, wrong interwiki prefix for links etc. --Stefan2 (talk) 22:21, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes please. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:26, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
I'm including the file as an HTML comment below. Feel free to remove it from here. Beware: you need some extra cleanup. The language of Wikivoyage Wts is called "wts" and all links use the non-working interwiki prefix "wts". Also remember to switch off HTTPS in the FTCG settings: Wikivoyage doesn't support that. --Stefan2 (talk) 01:25, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm not even going to pretend to know what to do with that, but I'll try and figure it out at a later date. Sven Manguard Wha? 01:30, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Copy the text to Notepad or some other text editor. Save the file as anything (say, wikivoyage.txt). Download a new copy of FTCG and put it somewhere (not in your usual English Wikipedia FTCG directory) and start the program. Click "Import..." and select the file with the text above. --Stefan2 (talk) 01:35, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Also, maybe you could check these files? They are all in use somewhere on Wikivoyage and exist under a different name on Commons, but may violate FOP rules. Some may be PD-old and some may be copyvios and they all need to be sorted out. Everyone is very busy right now and there's little time to sort these things out. --Stefan2 (talk) 10:42, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Exif-Stripper Tool

Sorry about the delay in making this. I've pretty much finished the code, I just need to fix something on labs so my scripts execute as cgi (If I can't get it fixed today, I'll just move it to the toolserver). Right now for authentication it uses TUSC. Did you want any other restrictions like being listed on a certain wikipage? Thanks, Legoktm (talk) 13:42, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

TUSC should be fine. Being that the metadata is still preserved in the original file, and stays preserved (just inaccessable to non-admins) if the original version is deleted, I don't see any reason to go hyper-security on it. Thanks! Sven Manguard Wha? 22:54, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

I don't understand your comment. Sven Manguard Wha? 06:42, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
I think you have a copy and paste error at the end of his section. --Rschen7754 06:43, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I think what Rschen is trying to say is that he thinks you were trying to say "I strongly oppose YOLO Swag's candidacy" instead of "I strongly oppose YOLO Swag". -- DQ on the road (ʞlɐʇ) 12:43, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
I believe that Rschen was pointing out that. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:12, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:23, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Try purging the watchlist? I've purged the js page, but it may take a little while to refresh everywhere. Andrew Gray (talk) 18:17, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

On interlanguage links in Commons

Hi Sven! Thanks to your explanations about PD tags, I have finally opened a Commons account and started to upload images. Among other files, I've uploaded a portrait of Consort Zhuang in court costume that had no equivalent in the English Wiki or Commons, but I've since found a similar file on the Japanese Wiki. Do you know how to make that image display properly in the "other versions" field of my file's description box? I've tried a few combinations with ":ja:" or the entire URL, but I can't seem to figure it out. Thank you! Madalibi (talk) 10:27, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure if it's possible, actually. You can certainly link the full URL, but I don't think you can have the image display. I would actually recommend swapping your image into the Japanese Wikipedia articles, since your image is of superior quality to the one there now. Sven Manguard Wha? 16:39, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll see what I can do! Cheers, Madalibi (talk) 01:26, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

ArbCom guide

Hi Sven, just so you know, I won't be standing in the ArbCom elections this year. PhilKnight (talk) 01:39, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Oh well. I've removed you and another Arb that has stated their intention not to run. I really hope that the reasons that you've decided not to run are entirely your own, and that you're not being pressured into it. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:45, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Files from Wikivoyage

I would have posted the following remark at the WV “temporary refuge” page under “Images with the same name on Commons”, but I’m not registered there and don’t want to reveal my IP. Could you please pass it on (or, if you’re in a position to do something about it, take note)?

I just replaced a link to a file called “Portree.jpg” with “Portree.JPG” (at voy:Portree, in case that isn’t obvious)—assuming it was OK before the move, evidently there are case-sensitivity issues to be addressed even where the names aren’t strictly identical.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 10:06, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

You made me laugh

"There are worse people to serve on the committee than David Fuchs." Definitely the best bit out of the voter guides I've seen this far (although maybe that's cheating since you drew on Wizardman's). Had I thought about running for re-election more than a few days in advance I should have worked on campaign slogans. "DAVID FUCHS: NOW WITH 20% MORE MILQUETOAST." :P Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 00:39, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Good to see you taking it in stride. Really I have nothing against you, and on a 15 member team your presence wouldn't worry me one bit. I just can't support you. Maybe next year, if you decide to step the edits up a few notches. Cheers, Sven Manguard Wha? 02:02, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
No, not going to argue with sound arguments cogently made :) I do look forward to all the guides a lot, and I definitely enjoy and appreciate them for perspective. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 03:18, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Change to Israelites wiki page

Hello Sven, I'm sorry, I'm new to Wikipedia and don't know the etiquette well. The omission of the part you mentioned was a first of two changes where I removed the genetics from subtopic and merged it with genetics info in another subtopic of its own. So it wasn't really an omission. I added a description to the second change.

Okay. Let me take a look. Sven Manguard Wha? 00:19, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
I've put it back to your version. Sorry about that. Keep up the good work! Sven Manguard Wha? 00:20, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Vandalism?

See your edit here. It's not vandalism. In may be unadulterated promotion, but it's not vandalism. 01:16, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Maybe, but it was the TW button that fit best. Sven Manguard Wha? 01:36, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Wikibreak

At this time I have made the decision to take some time away from the project. I will be available on Wikidata and Commons, but would appreciate it if you did not contact me about this at those venues.

A number of recent events, some of them non-public, have left me less enthusiastic about editing the project than I have been for some time, at the very least since Fastily's retirement. If I am ever to make a return to my previous levels of activity, I feel that I need to disengage from the project for a few weeks at least.

This does not mean that I won't still be editing, as I will have to make occasional edits here as part of Wikidata, however it does mean that I won't be dealing with the Wikipedia namespace and probably won't be spending nearly as much time here as I normally do.

To all of the people that have, and likely will, leave messages here for me, thank you in advance, and I will take them into consideration in the future. Sven Manguard Wha? 00:00, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

You and Elen are both human and fallible. Who knows what happened? If you made a mistake, so what?
Sane people will judge you both based on your records of service to the project, each of which a tremendous amount of selfless work. Like Elen, you are one of the persons liked and respected by nearly all, no matter how many disagreements you have. Life outside of Wikipedia is great, and you should enjoy it. We hope you return, and you will be warmly welcomed when you do.
Sincerely and with admiration for you both, Kiefer.Wolfowitz 23:28, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
I won't discuss my role in any of the current mess, save to say that 1) I knew some of what has come out in recent days before it broke publicly, and 2) I was not the person who was sending anonymous emails.
You all shouldn't try and draw any conclusions from the above exchange with Elen. No one, not you, not me, not even ArbCom, has anywhere near a full idea of what happened, and if you think that you can piece things together with the few things that have made their way onto the project, you should give consideration to the fact that ArbCom is readily admitting that even they're still in the dark about a lot of this.
No, what bothers me about this mess most isn't the secrecy, isn't the leak, it's the hostility. Elen can decide that she wants to try and accept blame for everything related to this incident, that's her prerogative, but she can't accept blame for the rampant hostility. My recent time at Wikidata, which has yet to have anything approaching a major fight, which is new and fresh and full of excitement, has reminded me that I really never got over the way Fastily was chased off. People on this project just don't know how to treat one another, and it's way more than the two or three that always get mentioned. This recent debacle certainly gave me a final push, gave me the motivation to finally give a break a shot, but it's bigger than that. I'm an empathetic person, the negativity gets to me. If I have a choice between a community that's as positive as Wikidata's and a community that can be as fractious as this one, I'm going to spend more time elsewhere. I have a feeling that I'll be back comes 2013. I can never really stay too far away. But for now, I'll be waiting out the storm over there. Cheers, and thanks for all the support, Sven Manguard Wha? 00:41, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

[Somewhat] on break

As much as I very much do feel mildly burnt out from the hostility this project has been churning out lately, I've found myself unwilling to sever the ties completely, and watching the project but not editing is rather tedious.

Wikidata is still going to be my primary project, followed by Commons, but considering my level of activity here, which is low but consistent, I can't really say that I'm on break. I just won't be putting too much time into this project when there are two other nicer and calmer projects to work on.

And to those of you that saw exactly this coming, kudos. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:31, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

GA re-review requested

In keeping with the not-gone-but-not-quite-active theme, I'd very much like for one of the people who watches my talk page to take a look at Talk:Beatrice Hicks/GA1. I'm not sure where the attitude came from, as the account is theoretically new, however the reviewer has done three GA reviews, all of which are unusable. Ideally, I'd like for someone to just scrap that and do one themselves. As for what to do about Coginsys, I have no real thoughts on the matter, except to say that between the GA reviews, the implied familiarity with the project, and a cursory look at the user's contributions (some of which are inappropriate) I'm not entirely sure that the user is going to be around for the long term. Thanks in advance, Sven Manguard Wha? 05:37, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Grooveshark and copyright: Screenshot

Hej Sven!

A new screenshot of Grooveshark appears to violate the copyright of Grooveshark and WP policies. The original image was cited by the uploader, who claimed it to be his original work, which he licensed on Wikimedia Commons under 1.0.

I suspect it needs to be made blurry, if it is kept. Kiefer.Wolfowitz 15:24, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

The image has been deleted. Non-free images, such as website screenshots, are not allowed on Commons under any circumstance. I am unconvinced that the uploader has the rights to release Grooveshark's copyright. If they want to upload something, it has to be local, properly marked as non-free, and either pre-shrunk or tagged with {{non-free reduce}} upon upload (which will trigger the resize bot to resize it). Sven Manguard Wha? 16:41, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I passed on your suggestions to the editor. Good luck! Kiefer.Wolfowitz 19:54, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Sven and Kiefer,

I mistakenly uploaded the wrong image, it was still saved on my desktop from the previous discussion I was having with Kiefer and DaffyDavid about image appropriateness and POV. I just saw Kiefer's post and I apologize, I will remedy this and place up the image in the next day or so. Thank you Kiefer for catching that! MannyMannyMasterson 18:53, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

I think that the image you uploaded is good for fair-use on English WP. However, it's short of the "for ever and ever" language of the CC licenses. It may be that an OTRS email giving a CC 3.0 license would work for Commons. Kiefer.Wolfowitz 11:14, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

RFA question

Hi, Sven. I don't know if you've seen Keegan's comment on your question 10. The question also brought me up short, and a diff or two would be helpful to establish context. Happy holidays and all the best, Miniapolis (talk) 16:09, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

  • Other editors agreed with me, which is no surprise--you could have seen that coming. Come on Sven, you know that sort of thing is unacceptable. Drmies (talk) 20:29, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
I have suggested that you should have rephrased your question or comments, but the lack of concern with the underlying issue is surprising. Unless you are drunk and fabricating an allegation for a laugh, then your concern needs to be heard and addressed. Kiefer.Wolfowitz 13:37, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm rather livid at you right now. No good can come out of what you just did. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:25, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
