April drive barnstars

Hi, when can we get those awards out and who will do what? I've made the deadline for distribution of awards May 9 (a week from now) so we don't get a repeat of this. How about the following message? (Feel free to edit.)

Thank you for participating in WikiProject Wikify's April 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive! The backlog was reduced by over 1,500 articles, even though about 1,500 articles were added to the backlog in April 2011. For your valiant efforts, you have been awarded the <AWARD NAME>! Your contributions through WikiProject Wikify improve the quality of Wikipedia articles and encourage their growth on Wikipeida, the largest English encyclopedia in human history. Be sure to participate in our next drive! For WikiProject Wikify, ~~~~

Is it too bold? Oh well. Guoguo12--Talk--  01:12, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Looks ok, I'll add the yellow background onto it and then I'll start sending them out tomorrow. Sumsum2010·T·C 03:23, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Tell me if you need help. Guoguo12--Talk--  20:12, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Important update: I've done all of the participants on the leaderboard. Forty or so to go. (Wrong.) Also, statistics from drive plus membership stats pending. Guoguo12--Talk--  02:25, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
Done. Turns out this wasn't that hard of a job after all. Thanks anyway, Sumsum2010. Guoguo12--Talk--  16:34, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
Sorry about making you do it. I got so busy the last few days, I've barely even had time to check my email this week. Sumsum2010·T·C 22:29, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
No problem. :) Guoguo12--Talk--  22:47, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive newsletter

The Guild of Copy Editors – May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Guild of Copy Editors invite you to participate in the May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive began on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). The goals of this backlog elimination drive are to eliminate as many articles as possible from the 2009 backlog and to reduce the overall backlog by 15%. ! NEW ! In an effort to encourage the final elimination of all 2009 articles, we will be tracking them on the leaderboard for this drive.

Awards and barnstars
A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants. Some are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

We look forward to meeting you on the drive! Your GOCE coordinators: SMasters, Diannaa, Tea with toast, Chaosdruid, and Torchiest

Premature AfD closure

I applaud your initiative in closing AfDs that have a clear consensus to keep. However, except for extreme cases under WP:SNOW, AfDs should be kept open for the full seven days (as a minimum), not six days and 11 hours as was the case here. This might seem trivial or petty, but we had cases in the past where admins were admonished for exactly such behaviour. Owen× 10:03, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

I noticed that that one seemed a little early, but it was on the closing day on the main page, so it seemed like it would be alright. Sumsum2010·T·C 22:21, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Relisting

Hi there, I just noticed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Freddie Hamilton which you relisted a few days ago. Your relisting was the third for this AfD and was unnecessary; there was discussion was sufficient enough that an admin could have closed it. Please have a read (or re-read) of WP:RELIST which states:

Relisting debates repeatedly in the hope of getting sufficient participation is not recommended, and while having a deletion notice on a page is not harmful, its presence over several weeks can become disheartening for its editors. Therefore, in general, debates should not be relisted more than twice. Users relisting a debate for a third (or further) time, or relisting a debate with a substantial number of commenters, should write a short explanation on why they did not consider the debate sufficient.

It is very, very rare for an admin to relist a third time and they usually only do it for BLPs where there has been literally no discussion apart from the nom. Anyway, it's not a big deal or anything, but I thought you would like to know. Happy editing, Jenks24 (talk) 19:12, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

As it was 3 deletes to 4 keeps, it did not seem to have enough consensus either way. Sumsum2010·T·C 22:29, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Please don't just count votes when relisting AfDs. Personally, I believe there was a consensus, but even if there wasn't, that's why admins can close discussions as "no consensus". Please do not relist AfDs for a third time. If you see an AfD that you think should be relisted for a third time, perhaps it would be better just to leave it and let an experienced admin make the judgement call? Cheers, Jenks24 (talk)
Ok I will consider that next time I'm at AFD. Sumsum2010·T·C 22:21, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't like this close, as you clearly just counted votes. the bottom three keeps were a single IP going against process in its rationale. This one should've been a merge. I ask you undo it, as it should have been closed by an admin. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 14:48, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry, Sumsum2010, but I had to reopen that AfD. Ignoring the ballot-stuffing IP, there was no clear consensus either way. Best to keep this AfD open a bit longer. In the future, please be sure to inspect the source of each of the opinions in an AfD. Owen× 16:44, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Ok I will read votes more thoroughly next time. Sumsum2010·T·C 04:18, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello Wikifiers!

Sorry this Newsletter is late, It should have gone out a month ago. I've been very busy in real life and didn't have time to get over to the newsletter. In this edition of the Newsletter, we have an editorial written by our new executive coordinator; Guoguo12. Guoguo12 has succeeded Mono due to an indefinite wikibreak. We also have the results of the February and March Mini drives.

Happy Wikifying,

Sumsum2010, the assistant coordinator of WikiProject Wikify

Delivered by MessageDeliveryBot on behalf of WikiProject Wikify at 01:54, 16 May 2011 (UTC).

Thanks for getting these newsletters out. Honestly, though, we should have just skipped March and gone on to the May issue. Guoguo12--Talk--  02:14, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
For heaven's sake, your talk page is way too long. Archive time? :) Guoguo12--Talk--  02:15, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
I should have done that, but I didn't want to waste all the time that went into it. April was major-project-month, so I didn't get to much. Talk page now archived=) Sumsum2010·T·C 02:35, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Glad to hear it. :) Guoguo12--Talk--  13:35, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
You may want to try automatic archiving if you don't have time to do it yourself. Guoguo12--Talk--  13:36, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
I prefer to do it myself, but if it gets that full again I'll bring the bot over. Will the planning for June start soon? I was going to set up a May Mini, but I think its too late now, maybe a July Mini. Sumsum2010·T·C 23:12, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
June drive? Yeah, I suppose we had better start planning. Meet you at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Wikify. Guoguo12--Talk--  00:54, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Hey, that is maybe the biggest template I've ever seen. Monstrous, actually. Any chance of toning down the size to something a little less than necessary to be seen from outer space? :) Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 00:21, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Huh? Do you mean the newsletter? I can try to condense it some on the next one. Sumsum2010·T·C 01:45, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, the newsletter template, sorry... (no, you're not expected to read my mind.... sorry about that!); it takes up a massive amount of screen real-estate.  :) Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 02:28, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Are we talking about just screen size or did it have an effect on the rep lag or anything? Guoguo12--Talk--  02:30, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
No, no, no performance impact. Just aesthetic.  :) Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 02:40, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Gotcha. Thanks for the quick reply. Guoguo12--Talk--  02:52, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. I'll make the font a little smaller, and center the title, that should be enough to fix the size (my intros aren't very big anyway). Sumsum2010·T·C 03:37, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
A bit of unsolicited advice: what's killing you is the logo on the left. Notice, it's nearly twice as big as Wikipedia's own logo! Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 09:30, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Sumsum, how about adding a small banner (MilHist size) redirecting users to the news page instead of substituting the whole news page? Guoguo12--Talk--  12:56, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
That's what WP:Nascar does too, probably the best thing to do, I'll start on a draft in a few minutes (smaller logo, nav. instead of subst, smaller font.) Sumsum2010·T·C 22:32, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
How does this look? Sumsum2010·T·C 23:33, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
Slightly lopsided and not wide enough. You're going to have to do this for every newsletter from now on, don't forget. Guoguo12--Talk--  03:06, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
I set it on 100% and center, I'll mess with it some. Hopefully I can get everything in on time for the next one. Sumsum2010·T·C 00:06, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
How about now? I kinda like the way the links are offset from the title. Sumsum2010·T·C 00:12, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

() Personally, I don't like how the links are offset from the title, but don't take my comments too seriously. I never really supported having the newsletter in the first place (takes too much time, not much news to deliver anyway), but you're doing a great job and I suppose it could work. Guoguo12--Talk--  01:43, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Ok, I'll try it how it is for May and see if people like it or not. Sumsum2010·T·C 01:46, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

June drive participation

Hmm... why are there only 17 people signed up? There's never been less than 28, and that was for the very first drive in October 2010. Guoguo12 (Talk)  02:03, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Did all the reward board and Signpost things go up? Maybe we should message the GOCE participants also. I see the drive got changed while I was away, that might be better to have it the way it is now. Sumsum2010·T·C 02:11, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, I can't do the reward board thing until the drive starts. Message the GoCE participants? That doesn't seem fair. Sending too many invites is frowned upon. Guoguo12 (Talk)  02:16, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
We probably should avoid canvasing. Although, a small message on the talk page of their project is given as an example of an ok thing to do.Sumsum2010·T·C 02:21, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
I doubt anyone will see it. The question is why there are only 17 people. Why? Guoguo12 (Talk)  02:27, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps some of the participants felt confused by the other format. Also the beginning of June is a common time for finals/graduation/projects/trips/other end-of-the-school-year-craziness for many Wikipedians. Sumsum2010·T·C 03:34, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

() Things are okay now, with 33 signed up, compared with 29 signed up on 3 April 2011 (last drive). Guoguo12 (Talk)  19:50, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

I guess people just like wait to sign up until the drive starts. Sumsum2010·T·C 22:24, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 May newsletter

We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round.   Casliber (submissions), of pool D, is our overall leader with nearly 200 points, while pools A, B and C are led by   Racepacket (submissions),   Hurricanehink (submissions) and   Canada Hky (submissions) respectively. The score required to reach the next round is 35, though this will no doubt go up significantly as the round progresses. We have a good number of high scorers, but also a considerable number who are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Also, an important note concerning nominations at featured article candidates: if you are nominating content for which you intend to claim WikiCup points, please make this clear in the nomination statement so that the FAC director and his delegates are aware of the fact.

A running total of claims can be seen here. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn and The ed17 23:37, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi

Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikify/Coordination/Guide. Thanks for all of your help. Guoguo12 (Talk)  18:04, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Guoguo has apparently retired. Can you step in as executive director until a) he comes back b) it becomes clear he's not coming back and we move forward? You need to get your butt back on WP   so we can decide what to do - there's no way that WWF can just breeze through the loss of three co-ords. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 19:44, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
He was a good fellow to work with, he will be missed. I guess I'll go on in and take up the position. I believe you had the 4th most votes, so I hereby pronounce you assistant coord! I've had company the last few days, I will be back a lot more at the beginning of next week. Sumsum2010·T·C 21:58, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Alright, so it's clear that he's not coming back, at least not in the short term, and you haven't disappeared, which might have meant the end of the project. Good stuff, but now to the main course. I'll be happy to take up the assistant co-ord position, in the interim. Here are my thoughts regarding the immediate future of WWF: You and I can't do it. Not alone. I really think we need to try to get more people involved, because it was hard enough when we had five full time editors devoted to running this place. So, here's my big suggestion: we run another election, but from now on, for six months at a time. (IMO, one full year was a tad too long. Look what can happen in six months...) Even better, before that we send out a AWB notice and have a big centralized discussion at WT:WWF where we see if any editors want to step up and help lead. Two co-ords have retired, and another editor who was very instrumental in reviving WWF (WikiCopter) has seemed to fade as well. We need new blood. Thoughts? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 01:01, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
The six month sounds good. I think I'll create a notice about suggestions of ideas for the future. Perhaps something like "WikiProject Wikify is holding a discussion to determine the best steps for the project to take, in wake(there's probably a better word, but I just forgot what it was) of User:Guoguo12's retirement". How does that sound? I think it should convey the need for a plan for the future, some encouragement to volunteer to hold some kind of administrative position, any feedback about whats happened the last six months, and run some ideas for new rules/guidelines/possibilities past the general public. Sumsum2010·T·C 01:13, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for updating my badge!Sumsum2010·T·C 01:20, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Exactly. That's precisely the stuff we should try to discuss. We should probably wait til after the drive, unless you want to cut that short, but I think it would say something like:
Yeah, something like that. And about another election - I really don't feel right being "assistant co-ord" with out some kind of consensus, and I think we could do with at least another assistant. Not like it really matters, since I'm sure you'll get executive in a landslide. ;) And no problem. Silver didn't look quite right :) Nolelover Talk·Contribs 01:36, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
I was thinking we could get 1 more co assistant, and then 2-3 administrative officers. We should let the drive finish up. I think start the discussion up on the 29th or 30th and send out the notice a day or 2 after the awards are out(Hopefully that'll happen by the 2nd or 3rd). You did have the 3rd most votes, and probably should have defaulted to co-assist. when Mono left. Sumsum2010·T·C 04:27, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Well about the extra people, my question is "who" and "what". As in, who would volunteer (do you have that many people in mind, because if I could think of anyone I'd just have asked them, rather then going through a long discussion), and what would the new offices be? Other then that, I agree with the dates, and unless you want to start it, I'll post something at the end of the month. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 14:09, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
I was thinking perhaps pjoef or Wilhelmina Will could be two of the people to fill the positions. I think the offices would help spread the word about the drive, help keep everything in working order, help with certain aspects of the project such as the newsletter which keeps getting behind, or anything else that more opinions would be valuable. You can start the discussion, I'll send the notice. Sumsum2010·T·C 17:25, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Sounds good, if either of those two will accept/volunteer. Maybe add a note to their AWB notice saying as much? The administrative offices sound fine, as long as we can clearly define their roles. Otherwise they are just glorified assistants. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 17:43, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
I'll append a note to their notices asking them about it. Maybe one office can lead the newsletter, one the outreach, one in the drive department, and the remaining as kind of a general helper to assist with anything else the project needs done. I think giving each their own "domain" would help things go a little smoother, then the exec. can help in each department and have an easier time figuring out who to ask about a certain task. This would divide the workload so that no one person gets stuck doing everything, and would also ensure that there will be more people who will be consistently checking on the project. Sumsum2010·T·C 21:07, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Again, sounds good, if we can get that many people. TBH, I'm not sure what we can do with the newsletter, and if we could just get one person to set up the drive pages each month (what Guoguo used to do), I'd be thrilled. I know I sound like a downer...well, anyway, I think it'll work itself out. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 14:37, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Maybe we could have 2 people on the drives and give the general assistant responsibilities to the exec. Sumsum2010·T·C 22:44, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Heh, if you and I keep this up we're gonna end up deciding everything beforehand. :) Well, at least now we have some ideas we can preset to our members at the end of the month. Like the new sig, BTW. Very, um, orange. ;) Nolelover Talk·Contribs 22:56, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Yep, it should give them some things to talk about so the discussion doesn't die before anything happens. Thanks, orange is my favorite colorSumsum2010·T·C 23:10, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

On a slight less related note...

Did Guoguo email you the WWF files before he left, as he did to me? Just want to make sure, since I can't do anything with them and I'd send them to you if you don't already have them. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 18:54, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

I didn't get any emails from him. Could you forward them to me? Sumsum2010·T·C 20:55, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Will do. I don't have the programs/know-how to update them myself. Please check your email in 1 minute. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 20:58, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
