Thanks for creating this article! I heard a radio ad for this casino and meant to look it up. I was glad to see your addition to WPUS. Keep up the great work! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:35, 21 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Unrelated question: I see you work on skyscrapers and other buildings in Seattle. Is there a specific source you recommend for determining which buildings/skyscrapers qualify for Wikipedia articles? I'm wondering if there's an easy way for me to identify Portland buildings missing Wikipedia articles. If nothing comes to mind, no worries, just thought I'd ask. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:42, 21 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Another Believer: It depends on the city, but the cut off is usually determined on the list of tallest buildings and is normally set at whatever the top 30 might be. For Seattle, that's 400 feet (120 m), but for Portland it seems to be 250 feet (76 m). For skyscrapers, there are a few databases that can be used to source basic information: Emporis, SkyscraperCenter, Structurae, and SkyscraperPage (the last one is questionable, as it is user-generated). Design packages submitted to the city government are also very good sources of information, but might be difficult to comb through. SounderBruce 15:56, 21 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

Despite its wide reach, content on Wikipedia suffers from the bias of its editors: white, technically inclined, English-speaking men that live in developed, majority-Christian countries. This represents an alarming absence of voices in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

In an effort to change this, the Jake is organizing a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, May 6th, 1 - 5 pm. Our mission is to bring together diverse communities to participate in Wikipedia editing, and improve its coverage of queer people and women of color in the arts.

We will provide childcare, snacks, and tutorials for the beginner editor.

Bring your laptop, power-cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

RSVP at and stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates.

What: Improving Wikipedia's coverage on queer and women artists of color
When: Saturday, May 6, 1-5pm
Where: Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Art Building #132, 1915 NE Chelan Ln, Seattle, WA 98105
Who: People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.
What to bring: A laptop and power cord. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affliated participants.

Arlington

I edit about aircraft and airports, among other topics. I made an edit to Arlington Municipal Airport, which led me to Arlington, Washington. However, now I see that it is a FA candidate. Is it ok if I edit it or should it be left only to you, since you submitted the FA application and you might not want someone to muck up the water? Vanguard10 (talk) 18:24, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

I've decided to not edit the article because I see a few problems with the article and if I start correcting them, it might muck up the water. Rather, I'll just secretly let you know some ideas and you can either evaluate them or do nothing and hope the FA reviewers don't notice any problems.
6 examples of problems are:
  • The airport fly in is mentioned twice. Once under festivals and again about the airport. May be seen as redundant.
    •  Y Removed the last mention.
  • Notable people includes those with red links. This may be seen as undesirable or the lack of a Wikipedia article may lead one to qustion whether they are notable (particularly if any article were previously deleted).
    • I will be creating stubs for these people soon, but it will take a few days at least.
  • There is no citation that exploration was in 1851. This is an important fact that needs a citation if it is a FA.
    •  Y Added.
  • The map gives no explanation of the meaning of yellow. Maybe it is later expansion?
    •  Y Added.
  • The inclusion of 2012 and 2016 presidential results might be expanded include other political leanings of the city. How about in 1980? Was the population Republican voting?
    • That information is a bit hard to source and verify without violating WP:SYNTH.
  • Is the Everett Clinic the only private practice of doctors or are there other doctors in private practice?
    • Probably not, but given how hard it is to source that kind of information, I only included major clinic centers.

I can see about 2 dozen more areas to fix but I don't want you to think that I am too critical. Good luck! Vanguard10 (talk) 18:39, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Vanguard10: You're not being too critical at all! All comments are welcome and I'll be working to polish the article based on your comments. Thank you. SounderBruce 19:33, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Vanguard10: Unfortunately I will have to revert/heavily modify some of your contributions, as there are some style and factual issues. The airport candidacy, for example, was more than just one year! SounderBruce 19:37, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Self-published?

@Wjhonson: The source has a lot of problems. Mostly that it's a low-quality website that does not establish reliability especially when dealing with details about a living person (which has a specific rule about sourcing). Furthermore, there's no point in noting that he is a Lake Stevens High graduate if he's already from Lake Stevens. It can be noted in his article instead of the city article (where it would be very cluttered to include the graduating classes of all the listed people). SounderBruce 22:42, 22 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Threats and misinformation.

Sir,

Please do not accuse other editors of sockpuppetry simply because you are upset that your (intentional?) distribution of misinformation has been corrected.

I am not one who edits often. When I do, it's usually just a typo or two. In this case, it was two statistics that were explicitly contradicted by their own cited source.

Wikipedia does not require a login for occasional edits, and neither can you. IP addresses sometimes change. Whatever.

Don't throw threats and accusations around because you refuse to admit you made an error. Don't be part of Wikipedia's growing fiefdoms-trump-accuracy problem. 2601:182:CE00:C:B94B:239E:9537:50C1 (talk) 00:51, 31 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

@2601:182:CE00:C:B94B:239E:9537:50C1: Please register an account or stick to using only one IP address. Using multiple addresses hinders our ability to track edits.
As for the edits you've made, synthesizing information from data sources is not allowed on Wikipedia. You can only quote direct data, as shown by Sound Transit's on-and-off boarding counts (which they use, in total, to calculate ridership across the board). SounderBruce 01:02, 31 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
And pleading to not edit war, while yourself engaging in an edit war by reverting my edits (which are the original/accepted revisions, as peer reviewed by other editors) is hypocritical at best. SounderBruce 01:04, 31 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sir, Sound Transit separately calculates and reports "ons" and "offs" in the cited document. Only "ons" count as "boardings". This is universal in transportation reporting terminology, including literally everywhere else on Wikipedia. You are objectively incorrect here; please abort your power trip.
I am not trying to be any kind of jerk, but I am a stickler for accuracy. By implying that Sound Transit's usage rate at these stations is double the reality (by apples-to-apples comparisons to all other public transportation on earth), you seem to be engaging more in advocacy than in the distribution of objective information that is Wikipedia's major purpose.
You cannot illegitimately revert a logically justified and properly sourced editorial correction and then accuse the person you have reverted of activating the editorial war. You do not own these pages.
The only time someone ever tried to delete a (proper, correct) edit of mine, making specious, incorrect use of Wiki policy and accusing me of sockpuppetry à propos of nothing, I made sure to get a senior editor involved and had that person's lock privileges revoked. I don't edit much, but I take the Wikipedia project extremely seriously. It is about information; not about your ego.
p.s. I really do not have any idea why this IP address has changed again; it usually stays constant for months at a minimum. Even though I edit at most a few times a year, perhaps it is time for me to search for my very old login and use it again. 2601:182:CE00:C:C477:A8EB:CEDC:7A09 (talk) 01:35, 31 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Good article milestone for DSTT

Congratulations on bringing Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel to good article status! It is a very important Seattle subject, in my opinion, and bringing it up to GA-class was no small feat, requiring extensive research as well as writing and organization (and inline-citation placing, etc.). Prior to your multiple major expansions – most notably in January of this year, August 2015, and September 2014 – I had long felt this subject had received far less coverage on Wikipedia than it merited. And of course your similar work to expand the articles on individual DSTT stations has resulted in two of them (so far) being approved for DYK (with University Street station being on the Main Page at this moment) and also reaching, or close to reaching, GA-class themselves. I'd give you a barnstar if I had not already done so two weeks ago! SJ Morg (talk) 08:49, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, SJ Morg! Your photos are invaluable to making the article as good as it has become. I plan on taking it over for copyediting and general cleanup, and perhaps pursuing FA status. I also plan on getting the rest of Link's current and near-future stations up to GA status and going for a Good topic nomination; another possibility is getting the tunnel stations and tunnel routes as a Good topic. As for awards, I haven't received my 50 DYK Medal yet (hint hint). Cheers, SounderBruce 18:35, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I have gladly taken care of that last item. Of your standing total of 55 DYKs, it looks like there were only two for which you were only the nominator and four where you brought an article up to GA class, so you were the articles' creator or 5x expander (occasionally with someone else, but not usually) in most instances, so far, and you have two more in the pipeline right now! So, I gave you the medal for creations and expansions, rather than just nominations. I'm at 36 currently, but I had reached about 30 before anyone really noticed that I had passed the 25th DYK mark. In your case, I now recall, back in about February, noticing the rate at which you were churning out DYKs and thinking to myself that you were on track to reach that milestone within a few months or less (which amazed me) and telling myself that I ought to keep an eye on it when you were approaching 50, but then I forgot.
Regarding your thoughts on possible Good-topic plans, I'll just point out that a downside to trying for (quoting you) "Link's current and near-future stations" as a Good topic is that, with Link's continuing expansion, there would have to be a fairly arbitrary decision as to what the proposed/nominated Good-topic group would cover, so as to cap it, or else it might soon become outdated (i.e. the newest stations not yet at GA class). It also would take a lot more work for you, given how many more stations there are in the Link system than just in the DSTT. Cheers, SJ Morg (talk) 09:13, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
@SJ Morg: As I understand it, Featured/good topics have a three-month "grace period" to get new entries up to GA standards, such as in the case of television shows or sporting events. The countdown starts on opening day, which leaves plenty of time for preparation and nomination. The topic would be capped at stations that are open at the time of nomination (which is why I've gone ahead and got all the Northgate extension stations up to GA), and potentially only include one of the two planned light rail lines (Red Line, Northgate–Angle Lake). SounderBruce 16:54, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
OK, good. As long as you're up for it, I certainly don't want to discourage you from taking it on (if you decide to do so). SJ Morg (talk) 05:47, 17 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

What is this About Removing Estimates?

My bot has been updating the historical population tables with new Census Bureau estimates (hopefully this year I'll get to updating the Infoboxes/geoboxes too) for every incorporated place (more than 10000 places)

(and every county) in the United States (minus a few it's had parsing/finding errors with) since the 2014 estimates came out, and the only complaint I have gotten is with a single page where the page's self-appointed caretaker got annoyed that the formatting got messed up (I switched to a new formatting with a standard template and finally worked it out with them). I haven't managed to do all the minor civil divisions yet, but I hope to do them one day too.

So unless you can point to a Wikipedia-wide consensus against doing this, I will be undoing your revert as this is (and should, absent consensus against) continue to be something that appears on the page of every incorporated place. DemocraticLuntz (talk) 20:47, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@DemocraticLuntz: It's a matter of maintaining consistencies. During the article's FAC review, it was pointed out that using estimates in a historical table would create inconsistencies and also errors when calculating the change percentages. It's best to leave estimates in the infobox and in the demographics section in prose, rather than putting them into the historical table, in cases where the article has already been developed to FA-quality standards. SounderBruce 20:59, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
The fact is that at this point, every single other incorporated place in the United States has the most recent estimate in the historical population table (minus a few that I still need to reparse in a new run-through), and you're the first to complain. That being said, I understand your point regarding the inconsistencies in the meaningfulness of the change percentages if the numbers are not for every 10 years. However, there's a solution for that, as mentioned in your link-the per annum function. This would be the method of solving your inconsistency problem without creating an inconsistency between your article's historical population table and the rest of the incorporated places, so I'm going to go ahead and do that. Seattle University

Thanks for this. I defer to you on this, since you are a current resident of the Seattle area. It's been more than 30 years since I lived in Seattle (and I only lived there during school years, while attending the U.W.). In my defense, I'll just note that the Wikipedia article on First Hill – I'm ignoring the guideline against citing WP as a source, since this is just a discussion between editors! – currently says, "The City of Seattle provides conflicting information about its eastern limit, beyond which are Cherry Hill and the Central District. Some describe it as being bounded by Broadway and Boren Avenues, while others describe it as being bounded by 12th Avenue." (and cites sources for both). My personal sense was that First Hill was not generally considered as extending east of Broadway – but that's the impression of someone who hasn't lived there in many years (and was never a year-round Seattleite). So, again, I defer to you and other Seattle area residents on this. SJ Morg (talk) 09:28, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@SJ Morg: Seattle neighborhoods are very vague, especially away from their centers, so it's quite common to see conflicting definitions. Seattle U themselves like to say they're in Capitol Hill for branding purposes, but the City Clerk Atlas unofficially deems them as eastern First Hill. The Central District is probably the least correct definition, though, given that the center is quite a ways east. SounderBruce 16:49, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
The least correct? Using the campus map on SU's website and according to the boundaries given in the WP articles for the three districts, SU's campus lies entirely outside Capitol Hill (except for the isolated Sculpture Studio and Bullitt Center) and partly within the Central District, which starts at 12th and runs east to MLK Way (according to current WP wording, as I said, so not necessarily accurate). However, most of the campus is between 12th and Broadway (and south of Madison), so First Hill does seem to be a good choice for identifying the district/neighborhood in which the university's campus is located. Request for comment

Hello Sounder Bruce! I was writing an article for the Signpost about the Wikipedia cup, and I noticed that you are doing really well! So first of all, congrats, and second of all, I would like to ask you for a statement regarding the Wikipedia cup for use in the article. You can talk about your experience, the progress, how you do it all, advice for new editors, anything. Your help is greatly appreciated. Be aware that anything you say in response can be used in the article. I am still working on everything so if I did something wrong, feel free to tell me. Thanks. Any response must be given by June 21, please ping me for a response. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated in this matter. Eddie891 (talk) 19:32, 18 June 2017 (UTC) (similar requests have been sent to multiple editors)Reply

@Eddie891: Since this is my first time competing in the WikiCup, I had few expectations going in. The competitive nature of the Cup makes editing a lot more fun, and has helped me branch out into new fields and polish my writing. It even helped give me the encouragement needed to push for my first FA, which is the reason why I've got a high point total this round. Being able to talk to fellow competitors over IRC has also enhanced the experience, with a bit of light ribbing over placings and the kind of stuff we're working on.
My editing process is usually to incubate a topic in user space and draft space, building up from bulleted notes with references to pieces of prose, over the period of a few days. After that, it's a simple move to mainspace and a bit of copyediting polish. It's become quite a routine, so I'm able to nominate a DYK or GA about once or twice a week.
For new editors: Find your niche and dive as deep as you can into it. Be unafraid to muck up DYK and GAN with tons of nominations, though a successful pass or two to get your format and style down would be advisable. And don't be afraid to ask for help, most people on here are friendly despite the reputation. SounderBruce 22:13, 18 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much! I will follow the Wikicup closely. Good luck in the rounds to come! Eddie891 (talk) 00:14, 19 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Pioneer Square station

On 19 June 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Pioneer Square station, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a cable car flywheel found during construction of Pioneer Square station in Seattle now sits on display at the station's mezzanine? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Pioneer Square station. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Pioneer Square station), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Coordinates

Please take a look at WP:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#Precision guidelines and MOS:COORDS. Your coordinates in the Pioneer Square station article were overprecise. Abductive (reasoning) 00:39, 20 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Abductive: Thanks for the guideline, though I am a bit confused on what it means in this case. I'm interpreting it as being fine with a more precise coordinate for stations and buildings, which is what I had in the article (though slightly off from the center of the station box). SounderBruce 00:45, 20 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well, I try to center the coords on the object, which is usually easy if it is rectangular. In the case of the station, I found the middle of the street intersection. 0.1" is about 3 meters in temperate latitudes, which is too fine-grained for large objects. At that level the error of the aerial photo is often greater. I have–very rarely–been forced to use 0.5" for tiny objects such as statues. Otherwise I have been successful at always using whole numbers for the degrees, minutes and seconds. This is what I was told long ago, what to strive for, by the editors at WikiProject Geographical Coordinates. Abductive (reasoning) 01:19, 20 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Deletion review: Bust of Cristiano Ronaldo

Hey! I don't want to canvass, but I know you're interested in soccer. Curious if you have any thoughts on the deletion of Draft:Bust of Cristiano Ronaldo (which was moved back into the draft space). I started a deletion review discussion, which can be seen here: Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2017 June 22. Seems some football editors don't like the article, but I'm not entirely sure people are assessing notability from perspective of this being a work of art, which has received a lot of criticism in a wide variety of reliable publications. Some editors from the AfD discussion have reiterated their concerns, but if you have any interest, I'm looking for uninvolved editors to take a look at the draft, its sourcing, and then weigh in on the deletion review discussion. If you are not interested, no problem! ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:27, 22 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

650 Fifth?

Asking about this edit...the reference is in the very first citation as an "Alternative name" as the "Pahlavi Foundation Building". Seems pretty straightforward. GreaseballNYC (talk) 03:10, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@GreaseballNYC: Sorry, didn't quite see that. Most of the time IPs only add unsourced statements, and putting it before the bolded title made it more suspect. Since the foundation is already mentioned, it probably doesn't need to be repeated. SounderBruce 03:48, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Too many templates at skyscraper article

Dear SounderBruce, I found you at the Skyscrapers project page. I am writing of the Evolution Tower article. An anonymous (IP-address) user added eight(!!) cleanup templates to it with his only edit on en.Wikpedia. I am not as used to the en.Wikipedia procedures, but I feel that eight templates is clearly too much. Can you please check that and reduce them, or maybe even remove them all? Thanks. --Okino (talk) 21:44, 6 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Okino: Looking over the article, most of those templates (if not all) have valid arguments. It reads like an advertisement that was written without much care for the English language or Wikipedia standards. I've reverted back to the version before all of that cruft was added.
