ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Ways to improve Yotchiangrai edit

Hi, I'm Robvanvee. Simongraham, thanks for creating Yotchiangrai!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. The article needs additional references.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Robvanvee 18:35, 7 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Parentheses in biological authorities edit

Hi, the presence or absence of parentheses in biological authorities is meaningful; the parentheses around the author citation indicate that this was not the original taxonomic placement (as explained at Author citation (zoology)). So the parentheses need to be left precisely as they are in the source. Peter coxhead (talk) 11:22, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Authority links for spiders edit

Thanks for adding the link to Wanda Wesołowska to some spider articles. If you do find authors for spider taxa not linked, you can check Wikipedia:WikiProject Spiders/List of Arachnologists, and do please add a name if it's not already there.

Personally, I see no reason not to spell Polish names correctly, so I would change "Wesolowska" to "Wesołowska". Peter coxhead (talk) 11:40, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Please consider applying for Autopatrolled edit

Hi, I've just patrolled an article you created. I only felt the need to add WPSpiders, a link to the relevant project on the talk page. Having had a look through some of your previous created articles it seems to me that you should apply for the Autopatrolled permission. It would help reduce the backlog at New Page Patrol if articles as good as the ones you've been creating weren't on the list. Regards, Cabayi (talk) 09:38, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ha, no need to apply, I just gave it to you. Cheers!--Fabrictramp | talk to me 01:43, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Polish arachnologists edit

Hi, I don't know if you are interested in creating articles on any of the other Polish arachnologists listed here, other than Wanda Wesołowska. I've just created a short article on Marek Żabka and am working on a draft for Joanna Gardzińska. One issue I've come across is that many Polish arachnologists have been involved with the Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities, but this institution has had different names at different times (see pl:Uniwersytet Przyrodniczo-Humanistyczny w Siedlcach). So I thought you might perhaps be interested in knowing this.

 • Wyższa Szkoła Nauczycielska (1969–1974)
 • Wyższa Szkoła Pedagogiczna (1974–1977)
 • Wyższa Szkoła Rolniczo-Pedagogiczna (1977–1999)
 • Akademia Podlaska (1999–2010)
 • Uniwersytet Przyrodniczo-Humanistyczny (from 2010)

I made a fix at Wanda Wesołowska based on one of these name changes. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:48, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for this, Peter. I have made start on an article on Barbara Maria Patoleta, who was supervised by Żabka and published with Gardzińska, based on the link. Please feel free to add to that too. Simongraham (talk) 21:01, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Great. I added Patoleta to Wikipedia:WikiProject Spiders/List of Arachnologists; this is useful as a source of wikitext for links. Peter coxhead (talk) 21:55, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Dashes edit

Hi, MOS:DASHES requires either spaced en-dashes or unspaced em-dashes. One of the many Wikipedia style rules for new editors to learn! In taxon lists, spaced en-dash is normally used for information after the taxon and author. Peter coxhead (talk) 15:45, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. There seems to be a lot of inconsistency as some entries have hyphens, some en-dash and some em-dash across the different lists. I was attempting to introduce some consistency in the section but maybe there is a bigger edit available. Simongraham (talk) 19:10, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, there's a lot of inconsistency over dashes in many articles, not just spiders. It doesn't help that the differences don't show up clearly in some fonts. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:57, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Angelika Machinek edit

Could explain why she meets WP:GNG or WP:BIO, or some other related notability guideline? I just don't see it. Please ping me (by entering Arthur Rubin or Arthur Rubin if you reply on this page. You're on my watchlist, but perhaps not on a short-watchlist.) — Arthur Rubin (talk) 04:10, 28 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Arthur Rubin: Hi Arthur. Thank you for your interest. In terms of the WP:GNG criteria:

 • "Significant coverage" Dr Machinek is mentioned in multiple articles, both during her life and subsequently. The article references a biography and the popular press (in German).
 • "Reliable" The article includes references to articles in mainstream newspapers and the FAI website.
 • "Sources" The sources are all independent, with biographical detail confirmed from multiple sources. The literature is in German as there is a paucity of literature in English on German women's gliding (WP:NONENG).
 • "Independent of the subject" The article lists some of her publications but these are not used as source material. The Fund set up as a legacy to her was created after her death.
 • "Presumed" She is listed in multiple Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red categories and has a German wikipedia article, which demonstrates wider interest.

In terms of the WP:BIO criteria: "A sportsperson is presumed to be notable if the person has actively participated in a major amateur or professional competition or won a significant honor and so is likely to have received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject." There are currently no specific criteria for gliding.

 • Dr Machinek is a five times national champion and has held nine world records. She won multiple inaugural races and has received an award from the international body that governs her sport. A fund was set up in her name as a legacy to support the future development of the sport. The article references the popular press and a biography, as well as the governing body.

Simongraham (talk) 05:26, 28 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

The German Wikipedia article isn't linked. Could you give me a pointer? Never mind, I fixed it. The "other Wikipedias" section is now populated by Wikidata, so I fixed it.
At first glance, I can't determine whether gliding is a serious sport. Could you point me to some material (in the English language, preferably, although I probably qualify as reading level de-1.) See also quidditch, which is a real sport with an international governing board, but I don't believe we accept being a world-record-holder in that sport meets WP:NSPORT. My apologies if this should be obvious. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 06:48, 28 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sources needed for Days of the Year pages edit

You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the content guideline and the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide. Please do not add new additions to these pages without direct sources as the burden to provide them is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages. Thank you. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks! edit

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

HMS Rowena (1916) edit

You added short references to Johnston 2009 and Colledge & Warlow 2010, those don't match the associated long reference. Could you verify if the years are correct please? Also, you should install User:Svick/HarvErrors.js to get noticed of such issues in articles when making use of short footnotes. If you don't know how to install that, let me know, I'll walk you through it. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 19:15, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Same for HMS Restless (1916) and possibly others. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 19:17, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
BTW, you don't need to add |ref=harv anymore. This works just fine now. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 11:14, 8 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Article checklists edit

Hi there,

As you may have gathered :), nearly everything in Wikipedia is negotiable - that includes what is, and what is not, required for B or even A class. Regardless of what other editors (me included) claim.

I write articles for users, so I try to keep them simple, provide graphics etc. I'm always trying to answer 'Why is this interesting to others?' That doesn't make me right - you have to find that balance for yourself.

One other thing; there's tons of information on the web, if you're curious enough. This article, for example, is one I did on Luis de Lacy; if you look at the Sources provided, all of those I found on the web. That's true of all my other articles.

Always happy to help if needed. Robinvp11 (talk) 18:10, 31 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ladjane Bandeira moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Ladjane Bandeira, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. The Dreadnought Project edit

Dear Simon Graham. It would appear that since 2018 at the latest and up to the present time you have been copying fire control information from The Dreadnought Project and incorporating it into Wikipedia articles without attribution, whilst at the same time citing (often inaccurately and incompletely) our primary source references. This practice needs to stop. We don't mind our work being used on this website so long as it is properly attributed to The Dreadnought Project. Nor, for that matter, does WP:MILHIST. @Simon Harley: Please WP:AGF as I meant no harm. Thank you for your feedback. I am always learning and appreciate any help. I would be honoured if you would edit the references where I am in the wrong so that they are from the correct verified sources. I hope you enjoy Wikipedia.

Hi, you were kind enough to do an image review for Maurice Suckling when the article was first up for ACR. DYK for HMS Martin (1910) edit

On 30 April 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article HMS Martin (1910), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that HMS Martin was part of the Grand Fleet of the Royal Navy in the First World War, but after the war was sold to be broken up? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/HMS Martin (1910). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, HMS Martin (1910)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

May 2023 Military History Project Contest Entries edit

I have checked and confirmed five of your entries. I have taken the initiative to delete what appears to be a duplicate Talk:Wattignies-class cruiser entry. I have not confirmed Fleurus because the talk page shows it unrated as of this time. I have not confirmed Soviet cruiser Vasily Chapayev because I read the talk page to show a change from GA to A, 15 points, rather than B to A, 18 points. If I have made any mistakes in this review, please let me know so that I can change or add an assessment as necessary. If I am slow to respond, a closing coordinator may correct any mistake that I have made or you may wish to ask a co-ordinator to check on it if the mistake is not first reverted by another reviewer or the closing coordinator. Thanks for all your hard work on these articles. Donner60 (talk) 07:21, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Donner60: I think you are correct in all these so have amended the entries. Thank you for all your work on this contest. I have only just found it but it looks quite inspiring. simongraham 05:42, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I have not had a contest entry yet but I may have one or more in the future. I thought I could help the project in a small way by checking the entries so that those entering the contest would not have to take that on as well. I have worked on several articles recently and have a few in draft but the work has been mainly small or offline and not yet posted. I have not written any new articles for a few years, however. I was right to be cautious by suggesting checking my review. I obviously made an error in the number of points for Vasily Chapayev by not reading the scoring table carefully enough for that one. Thanks for correcting that. Donner60 (talk) 08:19, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

HMS Fury (1911) contest entry edit

The talk page shows that the assessment for this article was on May 1. I think this can be properly entered into the May Military History Project contest. Nasta Rojc edit

I admit I am not remotely technical, but I never got a formal bot notice that the GA had passed and the page still shows it is being reviewed? Sorry to trouble you. For the record, I did research Alexandrina Onslow, but on my side of the pond I could not find enough to write about her. I know she must have had a fascinating life. Both parents died by 1881, raised by her aunt, Udea Onslow (weird that her dad is sort of crossed out), Udea died in 1883, her husband Astley Thompson died in 1887 and rest of the family moved to Australia. It seems likely to me that she joined them there because her military records show her first service was in a hospital corps for the Australian diaspora. In 1911 (aged 46] she was living at the Crofton Grange School run by Mary Alice Lyster. How she came to own a yacht, join the Scottish Women's Hospitals, etc. is all a mystery. obit 15 Feb 1950 SusunW (talk) 16:53, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

HSwMS Tapperheten (1901) edit

I have confirmed your recent contest entries except for the captioned one. My opinion is that you should be able to claim "none" for the start rating. That is based on the sequence of ratings: no ratings, you ask for GA, WP Ships rates as B but WP Ships is not a task force of the Military History Project, Military History Bot rates C while GA is on review, then GA is approved for the Military History Project rating. I am sure the WP Ships rating does not apply for the contest. I also think the Bot rating that comes after the GA request should not apply for the contest. I have seen at least one other such rating recently and gave an opinion that since the GA request was made before the bot rating, the Military History Project class rating at the time the GA request was made should be used as the entry rating for the contest. Since this sequence of assessments appears likely to occur from time to time, I have asked for confirmation of my opinion on the Military History co-ordinators talk page and have pinged you about that posting. Donner60 (talk) 03:31, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

If I had been paying full attention to this, I would have seen that you had already claimed the lower rating in July. Sturmvogel66 has now confirmed the August rating. He is more experienced in the contest and I will not disturb his rating and I do not see a reason to pose a question about it. In total you are getting the full credit for your improvements which was my intended starting point. It also appears I did not pose the exact scenario on the co-ordinator talk page but I have been given some guidance for similar situations. I am glad Sturmvogel66 stepped up and handled this. Sorry for the bother. I have had a few learning experiences with confirmations. As long as I continue to do them, and get them right eventually, it is good to have some guidance about entries which do not seem to be covered specifically by the contest rules. Thanks for your numerous great contributions to the project. Donner60 (talk) 07:51, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

New page reviewer granted edit

Hi Simongraham. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

 • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
 • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
 • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
 • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
 • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
 • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. signed, Rosguill talk 23:49, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Clas Fleming edit

I've finished with everything I could find on the ship. Harris, my primary source, is self-contradictory in places so feel free to change whatever doesn't match your Swedish sources. And you want to change my cites to sfn or whatever, I'm OK with that. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 00:02, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Do you read Swedish yourself or do you use a translation program? I ask because I was building a topic box of all the Swedish DDs and found more than a few Swedish-language titles of interest. Some of these are not readily available from libraries like Jagare: med Svenska flottans jagare under 80 år, but are available for not too much money. The article on HSwMS Nordenskjöld has other books that look to be helpful for our little project.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 15:13, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Sturmvogel 66: That does look a useful list. Thank you. Good luck tracking them down. It does take me a bit of time to process the text as I have more experience of Norwegian than Swedish, but non-English sources can provide valuable insights lacking in the English literature so I feel it is worth it. I find translation programs helpful, particularly for languages I have less experience of like Polish, but I am wary of trusting in them alone. simongraham (talk) 01:41, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, my French isn't very good, but it's good enough to validate/correct the translation programs.
The editor who did Nordenskjöld had done a bunch of other DDs as well. They all need some work, including a proper description, but could pretty easily be cleaned up for a GAN. I dunno how much your readily available Swedish sources can add, but it might be worth inviting him to our little scheme since he has access to books that neither one of us have. No reason why we can't have triple nominators, after all. What do you think?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 10:37, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

HSwMS Wrangel (25) edit

I've added everything I could and rewritten the article. Hopefully you can dig up more from your Swedish sources; the info on her activities is far sparser than I'd prefer. Even a general statement that she did neutrality patrols and convoy escort missions during the war would be better than what's there now.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 11:50, 29 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Lake Chad edit

Hello, I just corrected some obvious issues you pointed out, but I still have a few questions. I hope you can answer them:

1. I think Leblanc et al 2006 still have value in being used in this article, as the research is based on geological evidence. Do you think the problem can be solved by reducing the length of relevant paragraphs?

I agree that Leclanc et al 2006 is very useful. I suggest seeing if there are other writings that can be added for balance rather than reducing the content that is there currently.

2. I think the relevant parts of the Ancient Rome can be directly deleted or summarized more concisely with other sources. I don't know how you think about this issue?

That seems reasonable. If there are no sources for the statements they should be replaced by something that is reliably sourced.

3. You pointed out potential copyright issues, does this mean that I should reduce some content based on the Encyclopedia Britannica? I have already made some reduce. Do you think I should continue to reduce the length of related content?

Excellent work; Earwig now gives a 23.7% similarity, which is a substantial improvement.

4. You have provided many supplementary sources, thank you very much. I will use these sources to further improve. However, you mentioned that the article lacks a description of the history of pre European periods. But I completely do not understand Hausa language. Would you be willing to provide some sources?

I am really glad to be of help. There are plenty on the various Hausa Kingdoms in the area and the Kanem–Bornu Empire in English too. A relatively recent book on the Empire is A History of Borno: Trans-Saharan African Empire to Failing Nigerian State2. Lange's Ancient Kingdoms of West Africa3 may also be useful, not least because the studies in its tend to be more Africa-centric than many other sources. Saulawa's 2016 paper on Leo Africanus4 may also be helpful.

Thank you very much for your help. Newbamboo (talk) 13:04, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Newbamboo: Thank you for your work on this. Answers above. I suggest we continue this discussion on the GA review talk page. simongraham (talk) 18:35, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

I found links to pdf of the above at User:Saftgurka's home page. Hopefully there's some stuff there about the wartime activities of the various ships as well as background info on procurement decisions in volume III. Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 10:57, 21 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024 edit

Hello Simongraham,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Supermarine Spiteful GAN edit

Hi there, I have now acquired a copy of Morgan and Shacklady, which has a whole chapter on the Spiteful that I have not had access to before, and I would like to expand the article using this resource. Also, a couple of editors have recently done work on the article without discussing it on the talk or review pages first. As both of these issues imo make the article/nomination rather unstable, I would like a week before checking their work and adding more myself. Is that OK? Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 11:51, 4 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Amitchell125: That seems very reasonable. I look forward to seeing your enhancements to the article. simongraham (talk) 13:07, 5 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
