Hi, Rosiestep! Please allow me to follow up on a project that was discussed at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin a couple of weeks ago:

I am writing you to ask for your support for the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 250 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has recently passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Now, we are working with the Wikimedia Foundation staff to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

A possible new article?

Hi Rosie, saw this a while back: Joyce Tischler, founder of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, called the "mother" of animal law. Sounds like an interesting lady, but this link has been languishing in my "lookit this" pile for a month and a half and I haven't gotten around to doing further research, so thought that maybe with our access to sources at your fingertips, you might be able to determine if she meets notability and is worth an article. Emma Burke Collins - Mrs. E. Burke Collins - Emma Augusta Sharkey

I moved it because of naming conventions; including the title "Mrs" - especially with a full stop after it - is just asking for trouble. If you want people to find the article, you need to avoid this where possible. I left a redirect and it needs quite a few more as she seems to have been known by a whole lot of different names; you might want to consider that. I also included her date of death and a reference for it, so as to complete the article.Deb (talk) 08:20, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Deb. Ok. I see the problem with the "Mrs.", which is part of the pseudonym. In the meantime, I reached out to Megalibrarygirl to see if she could find a VIAF (I couldn't) or other authority control. I'll wait to hear from her as I don't want to move the article to something like "Emma Augusta Browne Sharkey" if an authority control refers to her as Emma Augusta Sharkey or something else. So far my research into this has turned up the fact that there is no authority control via Worldcat. VIAF is dependent on Worldcat. WiR priorities for May

Hi Rosie. My call for feedback for May on the ideas page seems to have petered out. There is clear support for "Organizations and conferences" but the rest is rather confused. As participation in April has been rather disappointing, we might be able to revive interest by having our very first editathon on "Women in sports" (maybe with some emphasis on the historical side). As for the geo focus, we could extend the American emphasis on the American Asian Pacific Heritage to women Pacific islanders of all nationalities and ethnic origins. Let me know if you think we should go forward on this basis and I'll start working on the editathon pages, invitations, templates, etc.--Ipigott (talk) 11:40, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Megalibrarygirl: That's a wonderful offer. It will allow me to spend more time on content editing. But I think we should share it, this month for you, the next month for me and so on. If you can prepare the draft editathon pages and the invitations, I'll update the mass mailing list with any new WiR members and also prepare lists of additional WikiProjects and editators to be invited, especially those for sports. If you run into any problems, please let me know. As for red links, in addition to the crowd-sourced page on sports, we have Wikidata lists on a wide variety of sports and virtually all the Wikidata lists by nationality contain lots of sportswomen. The crowd-sourced list of Organizations is coming along quite well but I don't think we have anything specific on conferences. Perhaps with SusunW's help you could start a list of red links. I would be happy to chip in too. As for the Pacific islands, I'm not sure whether Wikidata lists will be of much help as the nationality of the inhabitants is probably listed as American, French, or whatever.--Ipigott (talk) 07:02, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Location and language issues make things tricky for me to be involved with organizing things. :/ I can put people in touch with Australians who have organized several Paralympic related edit-a-thons in Australia before. @Rosiestep:, I'd need to create the materials for it. The documentation isn't that good and a lot of it starts from the point of view of how to edit Wikidata. In any case, it would probably be on one of the Wikimujeres Monday meetings at MediaLab Prado in Madrid. Still figuring out how to master some of these things, because the query engine can do strange things. Rosiestep, More along the lines of doing a project using the underlying software. As a consequence, I've learned a huge amount about the query engine and some other aspects of Wikidata. Understanding the power of that aspect is huge, because you can then do large volumes of interesting research about women's related topics if you can master the query engine and know what data is in there. --LauraHale (talk) 09:02, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

@Pharos and Another Believer, as you can see, we are trying to distribute the events' planning workload. If you don't like the yellow sidebar boxes, you don't have to use them; e.g. the info can be placed into a section as in older meetup pages. Thanks Ipigott - that is essentially a huge majority of what we do (making women blue) + we've integrated a bit of the WIR and WP:WOMEN projects throughout the task force. The taskforce is subscribed to the WIR notices via the Taskforce talk page to be automatically shared with the group and has been for a number of months.

I invite you and others to ❤ the Taskforce talk page as well as Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women's sport to help strengthen support for articles related to women athletes. The notability guidelines for many sports (including most definitely football/soccer) exclude a lot of women. Only 2 active top-division football/soccer leagues in the world (in addition to players who play for their national teams) are included by WP:NFOOTY - so we rely heavily on WP:GNG for player articles. The list of top-tier leagues across the world can be seen here to better understand the huge discrepancy. In fact, many of the players found here Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by occupation/Footballers would not be included under long-standing FOOTY guidelines. I've often thought of working to expand WP:Women's sport to include notability guidelines for women athletes. Any feedback or suggestions are most welcome. Hmlarson (talk) 16:46, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

There has to be a way to automate getting a list of potential sources from news sources, and then creating lists for red linked articles that people can use to start stubs. If some one creates a slack channel, that would be awesome. I created a list last night of articles from Wikidata that said more than one language but not Engish using the query instance of human with sex or gender female and occupation sportsperson with no article on English Wikipedia. I could probably figure out some way to bulk create lists of potential sources using SEO tools, but not as familiar with those as I was 5 years ago. That would be the easiest, using domains for newspapers. (There should be a way in theory to pull results from Google Docs, using ImportXL on spreadsheets, but I can't recall the code to get the url and title based on Google search. Once done though, I could probably easily create a few bulk lists of sources. --LauraHale (talk) 06:31, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

I like Rosie am totally boggled with technologies intricacies. I use it, but don't create and hardware gives me a headache. I have no idea what a slack channel is, how to create one, etc. As a researcher, I am usually pretty good at finding multiple sources by backing into topics from employers, school affiliations and family members, but bulk resources I have no idea about. Hi, Dr Aaij, and thanks for reaching out. SCW is a very interesting woman! Tell your student, "good job!" from me. And yes, the article should be nominated at DYK (within first 5 days). Before then, some suggestions:

• change "Dr. Wolff" → "Wolff"
• "... is the oldest of her brother and sister" → "... has two younger siblings" or "has a younger brother and sister".
• add DOB in parens immediately after her name in first sentence.
• add wikilinks for all the cities, schools, and any people who don't have a wl.
• There are 2 paragraphs which start with an asterisk; rmv asterisk.
• Re images: rmv the panorama. Img captions should indicate how she is associated with the img, e.g. this is good: "The WIYN observatory on Kitt Peak is renowned and partly developed by Dr. Wolff." (except, rmv "Dr.")
• Add categories, e.g. 1941 births; People from Sioux City, Iowa; all the alumni ones
• I tell editors to write articles in a way that will make sense for a grandmother in Africa. So, "...UC Santa Cruz and Berkeley..." won't make sense to grandma; spell them out.
• "Though she also debated a major in Latin..." → "Though she considered a major in Latin..."
• Split up the "Publications and awards" section.
• I am not keen on 1 sentence paragraphs.
• Add DEFAULTSORT immediately above first cat; add {{Authority control}} above DEFAULTSORT.
• Add cats: American non-fiction writers; 20th-/21st-century women writers; writers from Iowa.
• Richard James Wolff = husband. Her maiden name was Sidney Carne. Add née Sidney Carne before date of birth within parens in lede sentence. Change "Dr. Sidney Carne Wolff was born..." → "Sidney Carne was born..." Also add info about parents[1][2]
• Lead paragraph should immediately establish WP:N to avoid a trip to AfD. I like the first sentence to read something like this: "Sidney C. Wolff is an American astrophysicist, researcher, public educator, author, emeritus(huh?), from Iowa. She blah blah blah." This info re Wolff in the Carlton article is spot on "... first woman to serve as director of a major U.S. observatory and to have led the construction of six premier telescopes." Incorporate it! If your student can't sort out how to reword, she can put it in quotes. Either of these would be good DYK hook options; I'd suggest both.

Also, if you are going to nominate it for DYK, they will require that each section have at least one citation to a reliable source. Anna Torres (WMAR): The very fact that so many of us have now seen this thread should encourage participation in your contest. Please keep us posted on progress and outcomes. While I'm here, may I suggest that in future, when addressing the EN wiki, you replace "Ibero-American" with "Latin-American" which is in common use in English and therefore widely understood. Apart from Wikipedia's own articles and discussions on Ibero-America (all based on Spanish sources), I have never seen the term used in English-language publications. I stumbled upon St. Charles Hotel, New Orleans after writing, Lucy Virginia French, which mentioned the hotel, and, of course, that intrigued me as there was no wiki article but tons of pics on Commons.
