List of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal

Hi Rod,

Nice job in getting so many articles up to featured status! I was just reading the article List of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal that you got up to featured list status back in 2006, and I was wondering if you might clarify something for me. The lead of the article states that there is a total of 105 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal, but the table numbers the locks 1-107. Where are the extra two numbers coming from? I see that one entry is listed as "8/9", so I thought that might mean that one lock has two numbers, but there is still another number to account for. Any help in clarifying this matter would be greatly appreciated.

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

English heritage lists

I'm having a look through Grade II* listed buildings in Taunton Deane, with the possible thought of getting it towards FL standard, and I was just wondering if you knew where the "Completed" date comes from. Looking through the references, the actual page cited for each building doesn't give special prominence to any date as far as I can tell, so I'm unsure on what it is based? Fair enough, some of the dates look a bit off on the Grade II* list, but perhaps they are listed for particular reasons not mentioned on their entries. My first aim is to start eliminating a lot of those red links, as well as getting photos for a lot more of them. I'll definitely lean heavily on the Grade I lists for the formatting. Depending on how the TD list goes, I'll certainly consider working on the others later, but with all that article creation, I'm a bit wary of how much work it could be! Maps

Hi, I couldn't help but noticing that in a lot of the building articles the Somerset maps really look a bit small to really illustrate locate. I was thinking of proposing 7 district maps with greater detail South Somerset, Taunton Deane (Borough), West Somerset, Sedgemoor, Mendip, Bath and North East Somerset (Unitary) and North Somerset (Unitary) maps for pin to display buildings on. WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Bumblebee, a level-4 vital article, to Good Article;
• AHeneen (submissions) worked-up the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;
• Rodw (submissions) developed an extremely timely article to Good Article, taking Magna Carta there some 800 years after it was first sealed;
• And last but not least, Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) worked up a number of Featured Pictures during round 1, including the 1948 one Deutsche Mark (pictured right), receiving the maximum bonus due to the number of Wikis that the related article appears in.

Portbury Dock - Airbus 380

Thanks for putting in references for this. Many of the more active Wikipedians have the bad habit of simply deleting anything they regard as unreferenced, poorly-formatted, etc. Which means that I don't spend a lot of time on my contributions; Because some bastard is quite likely to delete them.

Other things you could do:-

• Change the IGG Airbus transportation map to include Portbury.
• Change the Portbury popup prompt list to include Royal Portbury Dock.

Margaret Bondfield

Last year you kindly contributed to the above article's peer review or or FAC or both. An issue has arisen from yesterday's TFA appearance, and is under discussion on the article's talk. Briefly: an editor added into the text the cited information that Bondfield's was privately known as "Maggie", and then incorporated this into the lead so the subject appeared as Margaret Grace ("Maggie") Bondfield. Brunel's swivel bridge

I see you've been busy expanding Cumberland Basin (Bristol).

Given the increasing recent interest locally in preserving this bridge, I was thinking that it was time we had a specific article on Brunel's swivel bridge, under that name. It has an importance to Brunel, and to moving bridges, greater than was realised until the last couple of years.

Note also that some of balloon flange girder is incorrect (and has probably propagated by now). The bridges over the basin locks have quite an age range between them and Brunel's involvement was only with the earlier batch. This is well documented now, but again it's only stuff that has emerged recently and only the bridge preservation people really have an accurate version. I've found this engraving in commons (and on our article on St Mary Redcliffe). I've almost convinced myself that this shows the shot tower on its left edge. I think it is about the right location. It has a hoist(?) that doesn't appear on the later photo, and the windows of the lower building are all wrong. Of course that could be artistic license, or passage of time. I don't think I'm going to add it to the article because (a) I'm not sure enough and (b) I'm not convinced it is accurate enough, but it is intriguing. I would just like to add that I am really pleased you are giving the extension a go, as I think it has great potential. However, having used it once, I have become conscious that it needs tweaks outside the conventional academic setting for which it is designed. I would very much like to hear about how you find using it and particularly what improvements you would like to see. WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

• Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improving Ulysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Dragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took Damselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
• LeftAire (submissions) worked up Alexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a level 4 vital article.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. University of Exeter workshop

Your U. of Exeter workshop looks useful and interesting, but one important item seems to be missing from the curriculum: WP:Notability, and the (rather high) barrier set by WP:Notability (academics). It may cause embarrassment if the participants are encouraged to make articles about all the members of their departments, only to see many of them deleted, possibly after a public discussion at AfD about the subject's academic record. Holnicote Estate

Hi Rod, I've just been perusing the current GANs and took a look at this article. I am tempted to review it, but feel that I won't have enough time this week to commit to doing so. However, I think there are some fairly big issues there, which I thought should be brought up now. The history section reads more like a loosely formed family history of the people who have owned the estate; there are sections of it which aren't cited at all, and others which are referenced to things like "Per information notice attached to window, 2014", which I doubt are even acceptable as a source. I am all for genealogy and heraldry, but much of what is in the history section is outside the scope of the article by quite a margin; it lacks focus. Much of it isn't written in prose style, but in list form. And, amongst all of this, there are quite considerable gaps; for instance, we are told about Charles Staynings, but no where does it seem to be mentioned that he even owned the estate, let alone how and when he/his family owned it. The Martyn section is the same - who are these people and why are they relevant? Anyway, I can take a look and trim some back if you want, but I won't have time to research a proper history of the estate. What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

• The simple solution is to simply include the "rawcontinue" parameter with your request to continue receiving the raw continuation data (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&rawcontinue=1>). No other code changes should be necessary.
• Or you could update your code to use the simplified continuation documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query#Continuing_queries (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&continue=>), which is much easier for clients to implement correctly.

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Somerset cricket grounds

Thanks for your offer, I'll just give you a quick summary of those remaining without photos:

• Agricultural Showgrounds, Frome – Still in use.
• Rowdens Road Cricket Ground, Wells – As far as I can tell, this ground has been turned into football pitches now, so it might not be possible to take a photo relevant to this list, though it would still provide some context for the article itself I guess.
• West Hendford Cricket Ground, Yeovil – This ground no longer exists, the article has a fair use image, but I don't think that can really extend to this list?
• Johnson Park, Yeovil – Still in use.
• Imperial Athletic Ground, Bristol – This ground no longer exists, and as yet I haven't been able to find any older images. Given it appears to have been in use from 1951 to 2000, it is unlikely that there are any free images.
• Westlands Sports Ground, Yeovil – Still in use.

I'm hoping to be able to get over to Yeovil reasonably soon to get photos of Johnson Park and Westlands Sports Ground. • You're right. One of them is captioned "A view of the Crazy Cage at the funfair on the cricket ground behind the Vine Tree public house." A quick look on Google for the Vine Tree pub, and for Frome CC confirms that it is the same ground. Given each picture is of individual rides, I'm not sure how relevant they are to the article, even as a showground/fairground? They have little real education value for the actual site. Bath, Somerset

Hello, Rod - I'm in the middle of reading and copy-editing Bath, Somerset. I have a question for you, and I may have others as I go through the article.

1) In the third paragraph in the section Bath, Somerset#Post-Roman and Medieval is the following sentence:

• It was papal policy for bishops to move to more urban seats, and he translated his own from Wells to Bath.

In the clause, "he translated his own from Wells to Bath", it is not clear to whom "he" refers. Is it the pope, or is it King William II? The next sentence starts, "He planned", and it's not clear who "he" is – King William II or John of Tours? Perhaps you could use a noun or a name instead of the pronouns.

2) The last sentence in that paragraph is:

• The 'hospital of the baths' was built beside the hot springs of the Cross Bath, for their health-giving properties and to provide shelter for the poor infirm.

I'm just wondering, is "the poor infirm" a standard phrase in British English? It is not one in American English. I know the article is written with British English, so British English should be used. I was just thinking that if "sick" or "ill" were substituted for "infirm", it would read, "the poor sick" or "the poor ill", and that would really not be colloquial. More colloquial would be "the sick poor [people]" or "the ill poor [people]". I'm just curious how that phrase developed. CorinneSD (talk) 01:22, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm just wondering about the last sentence. For a non-Briton, these terms are somewhat foreign and meaningless. I know readers can click on links to read more, and, after reading the first paragraph in the article linked at "Historically", I understand the main point of the last sentence. But I'm wondering whether "the administrative non-metropolitan county" isn't unnecessarily long. Going back a bit, I assume in this clause, "Bath became part of Avon when the non-metropolitan county was created in 1974", the "non-metropolitan county" is the "newly created administrative Somerset County Council". If it isn't that, then it must be "Avon" (see, I'm lost already). If it is the "newly created administrative Somerset County Council", could you either add the adjective "non-metropolitan" before "administrative" or provide a brief explanatory phrase or clause so the reader will know? Once that is clear, then there is no need to repeat both "administrative" and "non-metropolitan" in the last sentence. Actually, it would be best to keep "administrative" and delete "non-metropolitan" because "administrative" forms the contrast to "ceremonial".

Do you see what I mean? Clarify slightly for the non-British reader and make the last sentence more concise by eliminating a word. Just a suggestion.

Its confusing for us Brits as well. Avon was designated as a non-metropolitan county when it was created in 1974. (Somerset has been a county (as Somersetshire) for hundreds of years). Avon was abolished in 1996 and Bath and North East Somerset was created. So since then it has been "administratively" part of BANES but ceremonially part of Somerset - I'm struggling to find a better form of words but does this explanation help?— Rod ^talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

I'm sure it's better. I sounds better. But you might be interested in a difference between U.S. and Br. Eng. In the U.S., the word "council" is not used much, but when it is used, it always refers to a group of people, so to say that a city is part of a council doesn't make sense. But if, as it seems it does, it can mean an administrative jurisdiction, then it does make sense, and since the article is written in Br. Eng., of course it's fine.

2) In the next paragraph, why did you put "the charter trustees of the City of Bath" in italics? It's not a foreign language term. It's not a title, and it's not a word that needs emphasis. CorinneSD (talk) 01:18, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

charter trustees of the City of Bath is the title of an organisation - when Bath City Council was abolished (1974) some of the ceremonial functions were kept local, rather than being transferred to the larger Avon. 4) In the third paragraph in Bath, Somerset#Geography, Later in the third paragraph, I felt that saying a natural process is similar to a man-made process is backwards. The way I see it, the man-made process is similar to the natural process. So I re-worded that sentence and added a phrase (which I got from the linked article) to explain briefly what it is (for producing electricity), but you can leave that out if you wish. I also put it into parentheses for two reasons: it is a kind of aside to the main line of thought, and (b) it minimizes ambiguity in the subsequent sentence: it has to be clear that the next sentence "Hot water..." refers to the natural springs of Bath, not the artificial system. (I'm wondering whether you should leave out that sentence about the artificial system altogether. It really breaks the flow of sentences about Bath.

5) In the first paragraph in the section on Bath, Somerset#Climate, you say, "South West England". However, just before it you have a "main article" template with "south-west England", just after it in the same paragraph you've got "south-west" several times, and you've got "south-east" and "south-eastern" early in the article. Shouldn't "South West" be hyphenated?

I'm never sure on this and I know it has been debated at South West England, West Country etc which are about similar but poorly defined areas. I will be guided by you on the hyphenation but I think I went with that used at South West England rather than Climate of south-west England, however I agree it shows a lack of consistency both within this article and wp as a whole.— Rod ^talk 20:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps "South West England" is the way the governmental or historical region is spelled, but when speaking of a geographic region it is hyphenated. Perhaps it is traditional, and we should just leave it that way.

I'm wondering whether you could say how the Azores high pressure affects the south-west of England, maybe something like, "brings good weather to the south-west of England", or "brings generally fair weather to the south-west of England".

I decided to start a new section because the previous one was getting long.

I've just started to read the section Bath, Somerset#Architecture. I'm going to copy the first paragraph here:

• There are many Roman archaeological sites throughout the central area of the city, but the baths themselves are about 6 metres (20 ft) below the present city street level. Around the hot springs, Roman foundations, pillar bases, and baths can still be seen, however all the stonework above the level of the baths is from more recent periods.

I'm just a little puzzled by a few things:

1) You say that "the baths themselves are about 6 metres...below the present city street level", and "all the stonework above the level of the baths is from more recent periods". That makes me wonder where in actuality are the "many Roman archaeological sites"? You don't say they are "about 6 metres below the present city street level", and you do say that "all stonework above the level of the baths is from more recent periods", so presumably not from the Roman period, so where – that is, at what level – are those Roman archaeological sites, and aren't "Roman foundations" and "pillar bases" parts of archaeological sites? Perhaps the second sentence should be first since "hot springs" seems to be a location (and less specific than baths?), but even if you do that, a bit of clarification would still be needed. If you agree, let me know if you need help formulating the sentences.

For the second title, I don't see a connection to the city of Bath. Is "Regency" enough of a clue to that connection?

Mendip Hills

I've finished copyediting the article on Mendip Hills. It was generally quite well written. I have only two concerns:

1) In the lead, you mention the AONB (twice!) at the end of the first paragraph. Then you mention it again the second paragraph, written out in full and linked. I'm wondering whether you couldn't re-arrange some things to ensure that the designation is written out in full the first time it appears. For example, in the sentence in which you give the area (square kilometres), couldn't you use another phrase? Alternatively, you could move that information to the second paragraph. It would be good to avoid repeating AONB twice in close proximity. I'm puzzled by the last sentence in the first paragraph since there is no further mention of the "Somerset County Council's outdoor education centre" later in the article.

Exmoor

Hello, Rodw – I've just started reading the article on Exmoor. I think this sentence needs a little work:

• Even more precisely Exmoor is defined as the remnant of the royal forest of 18,810 acres allotted to the king in 1815, equating to 12/22nds of the total, in acres 10,262 1/4, which was sold to John Knight (1765–1850) in 1818, which comprises the present Exmoor Parish, whose parish church is situated in Simonsbath.

1) You've already used "more precisely" in the previous sentence. That one was all right because it contrasted with "loosely defined" in the first sentence. But since in reality these are all just different definitions rather than more or less accurate definitions, I recommend switching to "More narrowly defined," for this third definition.

2) In this part of the sentence, "the remnant of the royal forest of 18,810 acres allotted to the king in 1815", it's not clear whether it was the full 18,810 acres or a remnant of that area that was allotted to the king in 1815. If it was the full 18,810 acres that were allotted to the king in 1815, that information could be given in the previous sentence. Then you could avoid having to repeat "18,810 acres".

Also, it's not clear why only a remnant of the original huge area was allotted to the king; I didn't find a specific explanation of this later in the article; maybe it's there, but I didn't see it. If it is not explained in more detail later in the article, then there is no need for all this detail in the lede, which might deter a reader from continuing to read the article.

Finally, I think to much information is being packed into this one sentence. You've got four adjective clauses, which is really too many:

• [which were] allotted to the king in 1815, equating to 12/22nds of the total, in acres 10,262 1/4,

• which was sold to John Knight (1765–1850) in 1818,

• which comprises the present Exmoor Parish,

• whose parish church is situated in Simonsbath.

It is much improved. Would you consider substituting "portion" for "remnant"? Mentioning "remnant" without explaining it begs the question of why it was a remnant even before it was allotted to the king in 1815. Also, I would say, "the portion of the royal forest that was allotted to the king in 1815", not "the portion of the royal forest allotted to the king in 1815". It makes it clear that it was a real event that took place in 1815. I wonder if the reason why the king was allotted only a portion of the royal forest will be explained later. Is it there? Did I just miss seeing it? Is there any way to insert a brief summary of the reason why the king was allotted only a portion of royal forest? For someone not familiar with English history, it makes one wonder why a king would be allotted only a portion of his own – ie., royal – land. CorinneSD (talk) 17:20, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

I think that stuff has been added to the lead (without detail being added to the article) since its FAC. There is a bit of history here, here, here and in this book p79 but the books I have don't explain why it was divided up in particular ways enclosure. The Exmoor Historic Environment Record specifically contradicts what has been added to the lead, therefore I'm tempted to remove that section. I'm going to be away for the next 10 days or so and I'm not sure when I'm going to get internet access - so if you have not been able to resolve this I will look again for better sources.— Rod ^talk 18:11, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Simonsbath

Since I kept seeing "Simonsbath" in the Exmoor article, I decided to read it. Of course, as I read I made a few minor edits. There is some information in it about the partition of Exmoor that we were discussing. I wanted to ask you about a sentence in the section Simonsbath#Simonsbath sawmill:

• It is a very rare survival of an estate sawmill with surviving 19th-century machinery.

If possible, I'd like to find a way to avoid using both "survival" and "surviving" in the same sentence, perhaps changing one to another word. However, I don't know which one is more important to keep in the sentence. I thought of a few alternatives:

• It is a very rare example of an estate sawmill with surviving 19th-century machinery.
• It is a very rare survival of an estate sawmill with original 19th-century machinery.
• It is a very rare survival of an estate sawmill that still retains its 19th-century machinery.
• It is a very rare survival of a 19th-century estate sawmill with its original machinery.

River Parrett

I'm now reading River Parrett. I have some concerns about the section River Parrett#Hydrology and water quality. I'm going to copy the first paragraph here for ease of reference:

• Near the source at Chiselborough the typical level range is 0.05 metres (2.0 in) and 0.63 metres (2 ft 1 in) but has reached a maximum of 293 metres (961 ft).[21] The mean flow rate is 1.196 cubic metres per second (42.2 cu ft/s)[22] By the time it reaches Gaw Bridge the normal range is 0.23 metres (9.1 in) to 0.97 metres (3 ft 2 in) and a highest reading of 3.84 metres (12.6 ft).[23] At West Quay in Bridgwater where the river is tiday the highest astronomical tide level is 8.63 metres (28.3 ft) above ordnance datum (AOD).[24]

There are some things in this paragraph that are comprehensible only to a hydrologist or engineer. For example, in the first sentence it says, "the typical level range is X and Y metres". I have several questions:

1) What is a "level range"? Is that depth of the water in the river? Is that normal high and low in any given year? Could either different words be used to say what this is, or a brief explanatory phrase be added after "typical level range"?

2) I understand the second sentence – the mean flow rate – but it's not clear to me whether "flow rate" is a completely different measurement from that mentioned in the first sentence or not.

I saw your edit changing "receives" and "achieves" to "has". It still didn't sound right, so I worked on it a little more. I'd like to combine the second and third sentences into one since both sections achieved the same rating, but I see they have two separate reference numbers so I don't know how to deal with those. Do you merge them or choose one over the other? For that combined sentence, I'd like to use the same sentence pattern as seen in the next sentence:

• The area from Lopen Brook to the River Isle, around Martock and South Petherton, is rated good for chemical quality, poor for ecological quality and poor overall.

So the new sentence (which would be the second sentence of the paragraph) would read:

• Both the area from the source to Broad River around Crewkerne and the area from Broad River to Lopen Brook are rated good for chemical quality and moderate for ecological quality.

I would use this sentence, but you'll have to deal with the references because I don't know how. By the way, for all these sentences about the ratings, I would put the parameters (is that the right word?) in the same order. In this sentence I reversed "chemical" and "ecological" to be consistent with the order in the other sentences. Also, why use "ecological quality" in one sentence and "ecology" in the others? • Hi Rodw. (digging some stuff out of my memory here) Sand Point was used for testing halfsize(?) models of the bouncing bomb- there was some evidence of ramps (which might be the WW2 construction mentioned in the article)- it was referred to in the book about the use of the Old Pier by "boffins"- can't remember the title. The north shore going towards Woodspring was littered at one time with ordnance fragments- to the other side of the river Yeo there are the remains of two ships used as targets. In that area cannon and musket balls and shell casings have been recovered offshore. Back of Woodspring Priory is a station belonging to the Royal Navy, accessed by the road that goes to the priory. This (apparently) was one of two stations used to listen for Soviet submarines entering the channel. It's shown on the first edition Landranger 1:50,000 but was removed on the second edition. WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

1. Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
2. Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
3. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.

5. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
6. Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
7. Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
8. Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Arthur of Glastonbury

Hi!

You left a good comment here, I found very few soures in English about him.

Most probable thing is Arthur of Glastonbury is Jean Thorne (Arthur is his name in religion). He's blessed by the Catholic Church, not Saint. I don't know how to change the title of the article.

I don't think the Roman Church has a Saint Arthur. I only heard of 2 blessed: him and Arthur Bell (Francis as his name in religion). I also found reference to an Arthur of Ireland (12th century) in Spanish but didn't have time to check it.

Removing URLs from |work= param in {{cite}} templates

Is this (in the grand scheme of things) a good or bad move? Maybe the |website= param is better, but I think that gives a similar error message anyway.

I can see why you're presumably doing it, to get rid of the red error message in the endnotes. I think though it's actually a useful feature to be able to use, and so a better fix would be to change the {{cite}} template itself to support this as a legit form. Thoughts? Heritage at Risk references

Hi Rodw! When I saw your excellent lists of scheduled monuments in Somerset, I was inspired to start something similar for Lincolnshire. (I'm shamelessly stealing your list format!) If you peek in my sandbox, I've started with South Kesteven. One thing I'm having trouble with is references for Heritage at Risk assets. Certainly I can pull them up as search results from Historic England, but I can't find a way to link to a specific Heritage at Risk page for a particular asset. I've tried accessing similar references from your own lists, such as http://risk.english-heritage.org.uk/register.aspx?id=40919 for the Sweetworthy deserted Medieval settlement, I basically always get redirected to this page which has a message that says "The page you have requested has generated an error." Is this something you are seeing? If not I'm wondering if it's because I'm editing from outside the UK at the moment, I don't know. I know that Historic England recently revamped its website also. WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

Editing Template in Sandbox

I see the comment from Andy. You have reverted the Template: Rosewell Family Tree in my Sandbox. If I change and/or break it there, it affects the Template in the articles. If I delete the template in the Sandbox, as I did last week, then I delete the Template. How do I remove the Template from the Sandbox so that I can recreate it in my Sandbox and add the references - one by one followed by testing as suggested by Andy - without affecting the Template: Rosewell Family Tree. I will move it from the Sandbox when fully tested.

e3 Media deletion page

Hi,

I've taken away the offending information on the E3 Media page and added secondary sources for my information. The page obviously hadn't been updated in a while. I hope everything is accordance with Wikipedia guidelines but I haven't edited a page before so please forgive any errors as naviety rather than manipulation.

E3 Media

Ah I wasn't aware of the Conflict of Interest issues. Okay well, I'm the Marketing Manager at e3 so it obviously serves me well if the page stays up - however looked at the Conflict of Interest policy I don't think I've violated anything specific? WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.
