Cavaliers roster

In regards to your revert of my edit on the Cavaliers roster, could you provide a more constructive reason than, "nope"? TdanTce (talk) 04:18, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

That was not my edit. Rikster2 (talk) 04:29, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Inconsisnent navbox groupings

Rikster2, and @Corkythehornetfan:, we still have an inconsistency in the navbox groupings that went into effect several months ago. In the case of college football coaches like Jim Harbaugh, the navbox for the subject's current team is placed outside of the grouping. This is not the case for college basketball coaches like Roy Williams. Doesn't seem to be the case for pro coaches like Bill Belichick or Jeff Hornacek. Since you guys took the lead on this navbox grouping, can the two of you work out what the proper form is supposed to be and make things consistent? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 07:16, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

only “current roster” and “current coaches of” templates sit out side the nest. I linked the discussion on this for you last time you asked. I fixed Harbaugh but I am not taking responsibility for all articles. Rikster2 (talk) 13:18, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
Well, this should be fixed. @Corkythehornetfan:, thoughts? Jweiss11 (talk) 17:03, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
Jweiss, you asked this same question in August. Scroll up on my talk page where I linked the discussion. I am not a football guy, I am not going to make a point of changing these on football-only types unless I just come across them in editing. Rikster2 (talk) 17:05, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
I don't like the idea... either we group them all or we leave the "current team" and "current conference" outside the group and group the rest. It looks foolish to just leave one (in most cases) outside the group. I'll leave the current ones out and start nesting the coach navbox if that's what's going to make everyone happy. Corky 17:30, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
That was the consensus reached at this discussion. Rikster2 (talk) 18:44, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

Larry Nance Jr.

All due respect, but they do include the Jr. in his name on both the Cavs website and on NBA.com (and it's on the back of his uniform).

Vjmlhds (talk) 23:47, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Can't say "no one" lists him as a center Vjmlhds (talk) 18:21, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
See your talk page. heights, weights and positions are what the TEAM lists the player as, not news reports. This is a temporary stopgap, if the Cavs start to list him as a F/C then the Wikipedia template follows. Rikster2 (talk) 19:15, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Loyola disambiguation

I notice you reverted an edit I made on the 2017–18 NCAA men's season page of "Loyola (Illinois)" to "Loyola–Chicago". While the disambiguator for "Loyola" has traditionally been the state abbreviation in parentheses, the AP and ESPN are now calling the Chicago school "Loyola–Chicago"—see, for example, the recap of the 2018 MVC men's championship game (AP wire story picked up by ESPN; note also the page heading uses "Loyola-Chicago"). "Loyola (MD)" can stay in that form for now. — Dale Arnett (talk) 03:08, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Hey Dale - I am supportive of changing the convention, but it’s a change and need to go through the consensus process. Keep in mind all of the historical players and coaches from the program are “Loyola (Illinois)” right now, so there is a reasonable amount of work that needs to happen. Not to mention we need to think about other sports and how they are represented. Rikster2 (talk) 03:12, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
FYI - the NCAA site still uses Loyola (IL), though that doesn’t mean we could switch to Chicago, which seems more widely used. Rikster2 (talk) 03:22, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Deandre Ayton

BTW, I was just doing the same - trying to revert the vandalism - not calling your edit of vandalism. KylieTastic (talk) 16:49, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

thanks for checking in, I got it. I realized I had reverted some valid content. Rikster2 (talk) 16:50, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

Roster vandalism

I noticed that you're frequently the one having to revert and warn the range of IPs 45.58* and 45.78* (from ISP Fibernetics and based in Toronto, like this one) that keep vandalizing rosters. Let me know when you see them, and I can block them. Hopefully, they'll get bored eventually. Per Wikipedia:Revert, block, ignore, you can probably save time and not warn this character anymore.—Bagumba (talk) 09:52, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

Hey - yes, I watch all these templates because they generally are targets for misuse, either this type of vandalism or premature transactions, etc. I have been giving the benefit of the doubt and “informing” instead of warning, even though I’ve been pretty sure this Guy is the same person vandalizing. Maybe I will try letting you know from here. thanks Rikster2 (talk) 14:08, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

He's back

Just want to let you know that Colonies Chris also moved to ice hockey pages and started doing the same thing despite the ruling of ANI in December 2017. I believe he again should be reported if this behavior continues. – Sabbatino (talk) 14:57, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

As you may have seen, I have called him out on this at his Talk page. If you feel like he is still dropping state with his script (and he was as recently as yesterday on basketball articles), then feel free to post at ANI. The outcome was very clear. Rikster2 (talk) 16:43, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
I put a note on the admin who closed the ANI's talk page. Rikster2 (talk) 18:01, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I will keep an eye on him. And reporting it to the closing admin is a good move since he is familiar with this situation. – Sabbatino (talk) 19:05, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

@Rikster2, Sabbatino: I just made another post to Chris about dropping states. The last ANI was worded around state abbreviations, if one wanted to wikilawyer it. There should be no dispute at this point that there is no consensus to use AWB to drop states, abbreviation or not, from tables and lists. If anyone posts to ANI, I'd suggest stripping AWB rights.—Bagumba (talk) 14:09, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

Rikster2, per your edit at Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, note that we categorize "pre-draft" college football all-star games like the East–West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl as college football events. What's the difference with basketball? Also, note the categorization of 2008 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:19, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

No way, man. It’s a summer event (months after the season ends) for players after they have used their eligibility as an NBA scouting event. In no way is that a “college basketball tournament” like the others in the category. I’m not sure why you guys categorize football pre-draft events that way, it isn’t correct. Rikster2 (talk) 00:23, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
The analogous event to the Senior Bowl is the Reese's College All-Star Game. That’s held at the Final Four and is reasonably a college basketball event. Rikster2 (talk) 00:25, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament is held in April. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:34, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
but unlike All-Star games, there is no affiliation with college basketball. Rikster2 (talk) 00:41, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
In what way are the East–West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl affiliated with college football that Portsmouth Invitational Tournament is not affiliate with college basketball? Jweiss11 (talk) 01:02, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
I don’t know anything about those events. But the college All-Star game is put on by the NABC and played at the Final Four before the season is over. The PIT has no affiliation with college basketball, it’s an event originally sponsored by the NBA. Rikster2 (talk) 01:06, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
What difference can you discern from the text of articles in question? Jweiss11 (talk) 01:27, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
why are you insistent that basketball articles follow Football convention? Football all-star games are always after the season because of how common injuries are. Basketball isn’t the same. And the Portsmouth Inpvitational has absolutely nothing to do with college basketball. It isn’t an all-star game, it’s an AAU-style tournament for potential draftees. Rikster2 (talk) 03:12, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
What I'm after is consistency across the encyclopedia. All of these college all-star games follow the seasons of their respective sports. There isn't time for them during the season, in football or basketball. I'm not seeing any distinction between the Portsmouth Invitational and these other games aside from your personal preference and unconvincing interpretation. The first sentence of the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament reads, "The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, or "PIT", is the oldest amateur basketball tournament in the United States and the only postseason camp restricted to college basketball seniors." That sounds like college basketball to me. Do you plan to edit the categories of 2008 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament? Jweiss11 (talk) 03:23, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
It is not an All-Star game. It had more in common with the Chicago pre-draft camp. i feel no obligation to be held to consensus arrived at by college football dudes. That’s not how it works. A category being applied differently because you guys want pre-draft camps counted as college events is not a big consistency problem. A tournament featuring a bunch of former college players trying to get on NBA radars has nothing to do with the college basketball season, it has to do with the runup to the NBA draft. It is purely a scouting event Rikster2 (talk) 03:27, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
I appreciate you editing the 2008 article for consistency. The most important thing I need you to revise is this idea that there are "college football" editors and that you're a "college basketball" editor. We are all editors making one cohesive, interlaced encyclopedia. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:41, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
OK, then my advice to you is to keep an open mind beyond what a group of football-focused editors decided years ago. The sports have differences and no one is going to feel constrained by a set of standards that had one sport in mind. The recent discussion at WP:NFL on high schools in the infobox was a stark reminder to me why the sports can and will have to diverge sometimes. Rikster2 (talk) 03:44, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
Any difference that isn't intrinsic to the difference between sports should not be reflected as a difference in style here in this encyclopedia. I'm not sure what the upshot of the WP:NFL discussion on high schools was, but I know that state codes should not apply to basketball and football differently. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:50, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
That’s A view, but why don’t you go talk to hockey then? I think a measure of consistency is great, but if the Sports can’t agree it isn’t a big deal. Football is nearly 100% an American audience. We probably have more regular basketball editors outside the US than inside. Football essentially has one monolith pro league, basketball has hundreds. I’m not going to tell your members what to do, but at the same time I am not going to feel like we need to be held to standards devised solely by football editors if they aren’t optimal. For example, we aren’t adding “College Foo starting point guard” navboxes like you have for quarterbacks. We aren’t adding succession boxes plus navboxes like baseball does. We aren’t following hockey’s list of clubs vs. a chronology like hockey does. Minor differences aren’t a big deal. Rikster2 (talk) 03:59, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
You're still viewing editors as if they have balkanized club membership. That's a problem. Our long term goal should to eliminate these various differences, where such differences are not inherent to subject, but merely the product of differing idiosyncrasies of various editors. Starting QB is an example of a special structure in football that has no analog in basketball. We've already made great strides to bring formatting uniformity across sports, particularly across American college sports. I will continue to move in that direction. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:11, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

It is now time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life. I am declaring for the 2018 NBA Draft and do not plan to hire an agent at this moment. Thanks for the love. ROCK CHALK!!!" Repeat linker

It appears that this IP range of 240D:1A:FC:2B00:* has been serially repeating links of teams in infoboxes for a while. I rangeblocked then for a week. If they show up again, give them the ol good faith warning, but ask for a rangeblock if the dont stop. (BTW, the guideline is technically WP:REPEATLINK and not WP:OVERLINK). Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 03:10, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Article idea

Hi Rikster. Just an FYI, Bob Prewitt was an SMU basketball coach who recently died who is currently a redlink. Thought you might want to tackle this one. I might get around to it if you don't but I've been focusing on writing articles for G-League/European league players recently. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 01:47, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Thanks - I will consider it. There have been a few college coaches who have died over the last few weeks. I actually just created Dick Fichtner. Feel free to create it if you feel like it. I have been busy lately so article time has been a little hard to come by. Rikster2 (talk) 20:20, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
I created Frazier, thanks for the tip. Also, I have a question. There is a Justin Robinson who is possibly notable who plays for Virginia Tech. He was born in 1995 but Justin Robinson (basketball, born 1995) is already taken. What would his article be? Would It be Justin Robinson (Virginia Tech) and then we redirect when he goes pro? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 16:41, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Funny, you posted the img on my talk as I was writing the Garrett article! ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 22:03, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
    • Yeah, I saw you tweaked the Westchester templates so I thought you might be planning to write it soon. Rikster2 (talk) 22:12, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

Date ranges

Just to clarify, do you want a range for more than 3 straight years, or 3 years or more. I'm not sure.Bluesangrel (talk) 02:00, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

any range of 3 or more consecutive wins. Could be 3 or 20. Used in infobox for space reasons. Rikster2 (talk) 02:40, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
OK. The reason I wasn't using ranges though is because I found several articles where say if a player had won 5 championships, the range would be typed as something like 1992–1996 - some editor would then see 1992 and 1996, and incorrectly interpret it as 2 championships won, and not 5. They would then edit the article infobox to list to 2 championships won, and not 5. I saw edits like that several times, so that's why I would just list the years out.Bluesangrel (talk) 19:11, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
Ranges are pretty common English usage. The folks interpreting "5x 1992-1996" as "2x 1992, 1996" are getting it wrong. Rikster2 (talk) 19:33, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Deaths in 2018

Hello, when you add people to the Deaths in 2018 page, please note that they should be in alphabetical order under each day. Thank you. --Marbe166 (talk) 17:11, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, thought I was - I thought I inserted it between Ivankin and Roundtree. But thanks for moving it. Rikster2 (talk) 17:17, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
You did, but it is Johnson Roundtree. --Marbe166 (talk) 17:29, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Understood, but typically I'd see a hyphen or it would be treated as a middle name. Honest mistake, I add names to the list all the time. We're good - thank you for closing the loop. Rikster2 (talk) 17:36, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
By the way - {{DEFAULTSORT:Roundtree, Dovey Johnson}} - which is it? Should be corrected in one place or the other. I think it is in the wrong place on the deaths list based on the Washington Post obit which calls her "Ms. Roundtree." Rikster2 (talk) 17:37, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Quick question

Hello! First of all, thank you for reviewing the pages I've edited in the last few days and correcting the mistakes I had done – it seems that I'm still a bit rusty after several years of inactivity on Wikipedia. I used to edit on football articles and I'm new at editing and creating basketball pages, so I still have to learn some aspects of it. I have a question: I saw that you changed some names in the Parade HS All-America teams that I wrote. I had written those names that way because that's how they were reported by the press at the time: for example, Tito Horford was still known with his actual name Alfredo, Boo Harvey was known as Greg, Pooh Richardson as Jerome, and so on. For what I understand, they still did not have their nicknames during their high school years, they got them later. So, isn't it more correct to write their names as they were reported by the press, since at the time their nicknames did not exist? Because in 1985 nobody wrote, say, "Pooh Richardson", they all wrote Jerome. Let me know what you think! Thank you! --Triple 8~enwiki (talk) 10:54, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

I think it’s more important that the names are recognizable to readers (using WP:COMMONNAME) vs. to exactly record them how they appeared in the article. All those guys (Tito, Boo, Pooh) were known by those nicknames as high school players too - I remember their recruitments (especially Horford’s crazy one, and absolutely no one called “Alfredo”). It’s different if a player actually changes their name (like Kareem or Metta World Peace). If you feel really strongly about it, change them back. I checked 1984-1985 articles at newspapers.com and “Pooh” Richardson was pretty common. Rikster2 (talk) 11:37, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. There's no problem at all, I will not change them. I am far less experienced on this subject than you are so I'll leave the names as they are. I had this doubt too but I thought they got their nicknames later – I was wrong. By the way I'm curious now, what did you mean when you wrote that Horford's recruitment was crazy? --Triple 8~enwiki (talk) 23:01, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
Article on the Tito Horford recruitment. But that’s not all. Rikster2 (talk) 23:22, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Templates

Hey, maybe the "current season" link should be removed from the NBA templates? Kante4 (talk) 12:51, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, I think the franchise templates need discussion in general - they show up in a lot of places where it’s hard to figure out why (announcers, former GMs, etc). “Current season” actually seems reasonable to me, but they need to be removed from the previous seasons in this case. We have problems of too many templates anyway. Rikster2 (talk) 12:57, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
Agree. And we have the season template for every team so the current season does not have to be there, for me. Kante4 (talk) 13:01, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

Mel Thompson

I'm concerned about the viability of this article. If, indeed, the only notable thing about Thompson is that he coached Pat Conroy, then he doesn't seem notable enough for an article. I've seen other people point out in deletion discussions that "notability isn't inherited." If he is notable for coaching Conroy, then it seems a quote from Conroy about him is one of the most notable things about him. What are your thoughts on this? Amsgearing (talk) 16:15, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

You said "see my response on the talk page" but I don't see a response anywhere. Amsgearing (talk) 16:26, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, thanks for the edit conflict - it is below Rikster2 (talk) 16:27, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
It’s not the only thing he is notable for. But it separates him from other, relatively ordinary college basketball coaches and is what he is known for by non-basketball fans. He met GNG as a star basketball player for NC State and he coached at the major college level for seven years, either of those would garner the cumulative coverage to meet GNG. But if ONE OF the things that makes him notable is that he’s featured in the Conroy book, then it should be in the lead. But you changed something else - you took out the book title altogether and replaced it with a general anecdote about Thompson by Pat Conroy. I believe this is WP:UNDUE weight for that statement given the context of a short article - and that is before you note that he may not have actually said it at all - it’s not a direct quote, it’s an anecdote. Even if you move the line, the wording in my opinion is inappropriate for a biographical article. Rikster2 (talk) 16:27, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
Yes, sorry about the removal of the book thing - that was an honest mistake on my part and i thought I had left that in. I've re-inserted stuff about the book and re-ordered the paragraph to put all the Conroy info in one paragraph. I'll re-read the quote thing now that I've read your response. In any case, it's pretty clear, the more I research, that Conroy had a pretty low opinion of Thompson. Amsgearing (talk) 16:33, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
Right, but how deep do you into that in a stub that’s a few paragraphs long? If ther were a lot more info on his playing and coaching careers it wouldn’t stick out so much Rikster2 (talk) 16:35, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
Well, that's a matter of opinion, of course. If he's mostly notable for being Pat Conroy's coach, then I don't think it matters "how deep" - it only matters whether the material is sourced, and whether it's notable enough to include. The quote about black players is a direct quote from Conroy about Thompson that was published in the New York Times, so I don't think that reliability is in question there. Amsgearing (talk) 16:38, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
WP:UNDUE isn't about reliability (though again, he didn't actually say it so why are we putting it in a short article?) it is about how much weight to give the statement. The statement paints him as a racist, and I don't think that is necessary given one data point. And I didn't mean he was only notable for being in the book, what I meant was that it is one thing that separates him from similar others and therefore is probably worth being in the lead. To be honest, I don't really understand why you are so dead set against noting he was in the Conroy book in the lead but there is a limit to how much I am going to fight that. Rikster2 (talk) 18:54, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
If 98% of the material available about Thompson is directly related to Pat Conroy, I'd say the first-hand quote about Thompson from Conroy is pretty relevant. I guess we're not going to agree on this point so maybe some sort of third-party input is necessary. Amsgearing (talk) 20:39, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

It is not correct that 98% of the material is about Conroy. That may be true if present-day sources, but there’s plenty from his time as a player and coach. But the article isn’t particularly long that a potentially defamatory recollection needs to be in there if not balanced by a deeper discussion of his entire public life. I’d encourage you to read WP:UNDUE. Rikster2 (talk) 21:33, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Doncic height listing at real Madrid site is very wrong and should not be used

Dozens of sources have said he's been officially measured at 6-8 and 230. Those listing on his team's website are from when he was 16 years old. I know there is this idea that only a team's website listing should be used here for heights and weights, but that cannot be the case, when those listings are well known and proven to be very outdated and incorrect.Bluesangrel (talk) 22:04, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

it’s his LISTED height. That is what the field is, not true height. Real Madrid lists him how they list him. It’s the same as Kevin Durant, who is way taller than 6’9. At a minimum you need to source a height/weight if using something other than the listed one. Rikster2 (talk) 23:23, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
I used the NBA.com draft profile. It’s a little taller and at least it is something official. It isn’t 6’8 though. Rikster2 (talk) 23:36, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Well, these heights are clearly wrong, and I would never say that if it was not true.Bluesangrel (talk) 02:45, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

    • Yep, announced. Hate it for the kid and his mom Rikster2 (talk) 01:50, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
      • Whatever, he'll probably start for the Suns and may develop into a pretty good player. As a Sixers fan it certainly is not great since I'm not so high on Zhaire Smith. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 01:55, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Help me with vandals . I am Greek sorry for my bad English.

Kostas antetokounmpo and Eric Bledsoe are being vandalized and I no not how to report and revert. If you could help I would appreciate. Jerry44west (talk) 04:09, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Re:Summer League

I will keep that in mind from now on. I was thinking the infobox would mention the summer league team until the end of summer league and then be removed without listing in the team history, since they are technically representing the team. But I don't feel very strongly about this and am willing to no longer follow this made-up convention. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 23:11, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

Like I said, I’m not going to fight over these (though I will remove them from the club history and delete players from the roster templates). Right now due to the flurry of signings and the draft things are just crazy. Nice job with your article creations over the last month or so - lots of draft picks and free agents. Rikster2 (talk) 23:18, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
What should we do with players who have been announced as signing two way contracts? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 20:10, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
Per any other signing we technically should wait until it is announced by the team. I haven't been pushing it, but I have been checking team pages and Twitter every day waiting for this. None have been announced yet. Rikster2 (talk) 20:14, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Basketball SNG

As an offshoot from Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Basketball#LNB_Pro_A_Notability, do you agree with the inclusion of these Eastearn Europrean leagues that I tried to revert as "no consensus" before? As a background, the editor added it based on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Basketball/Archive_10#Revised_WP:NHOOPS_guideline, where you commented "but need to look further at the Eastern European leagues you recommend. This same editor recently tried a backdoor tactic to add criteria to the boxing SNG, but was thwarted. I don't know much about those basketball leagues, maybe they "really" do belong, but I'd be hard pressed to believe it based on that discussion alone.—Bagumba (talk) 11:23, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

I have no idea if those leagues meet the “every one minute of one game” standard. The issue, and why I wanted them tested, is that most sources would be in languages that English-speakers can’t even begin to search under (I can search Spanish, French, Italian, etc. sources pretty easily without speaking those languages because of the common alphabet). This is why it would be valuable to set a standard around them. But, no, I don’t think an agreement was reached to add them. What do you think about using awards and/or games played thresholds and creating a more tiered system? I would be more comfortable making a “leap of faith” for some of these top leagues in countries where it is known basketball is popular (Russia, Serbia, China, etc) if it were held to, say, 150-200 games played or if a person were an All-League player. Rikster2 (talk) 13:34, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Part of the problem is you get fans of certain leagues who make it their mission to write articles for every player in it, usually stubs that don’t prove notability. This time it’s LNB Pro A, but is also happeneing for the Japanese League and the Canadian NBL a few years back (and that Canadian League is a minor league). Rikster2 (talk) 13:36, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
I’m ok with awards, but still want to demonstrated that the criteria is likely to meet GNG in 90% of cases. I dont automatically believe that all award winners of a league are notable, or that they are inherently notable just becuae they played in any ol league for a long time. All thresholds should be proven before they become SNGs. Getting back to those Eastern leagues, are you willing to revert it? I dont really want to edit war on my own; however, the edit warrer in this case basically forced their POV in without consensus.—Bagumba (talk) 16:08, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
OK, I’ve reverted the adds. Look, I’m not going to go thru the trouble of amending NBASKETBALL and doing all the work to prove the case. I used to do that and just had Professional category people keep throwing blockades/changing requests for proof to thwart it. F that, I don’t have my whole like to live on WP. Rikster2 (talk) 18:33, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Understood. Honestly, I think GNG should be the general rule used, and NSPORTS should just be for the obvious ones that get AfDed over and over and end up being kept all the time. I'm sure there's no consensus on my take either. Some people just want to right "bias" for coverage that doesn't exist, or think "top league" of said country is enough. American cricket anyone?—Bagumba (talk) 18:44, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
On another note, it looks like Israel was added without much proof being demanded. At least that one had a decent number of people agreeing with it's inclusion.—Bagumba (talk) 19:12, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Georges Niang

Georges Niang has signed a new contract with the Utah Jazz. It’s not a two-way contract. The Jazz have announced this in a press release.https://www.nba.com/jazz/news/jazz-sign-forward-georges-niang — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.75.100.126 (talk) 11:01, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Georgios Papagiannis

The height listing and weight listing for him was 7-2 275 in Europe, and in NBA draft listings also. the 7-1 240 was from his junior year of high school in USA and for some reason NBA used that. Finally, the NBA updated it to 7-2 275 for summer league. Regaredless of what NBA profile says, that listing is clearly absurd and an example of why there should be exceptions here to how height and weight listings are done and not just whatever the team listing says. Anyone can look at Papagiannis and see 240 pounds is a completely absurd listing...he looks like 290 at least by the eyes. Seriously, you can see how ridiculously wrong that listing is by looking at him in a game with other players. There has to be some kind of exception made to this listing only what a team listing says, in such blatantly wrong cases like this, especially when we have listings from Europe and summer league that are different.Bluesangrel (talk) 00:40, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

it’s listed height and it’s been consistent in the NBA. Sounds like he might switch teams soon. Maybe they will list his height differently. Plus, one inch isn’t “so different”. Rikster2 (talk) 00:42, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
Guess what? Kevin Durant isn’t 6’9 either Rikster2 (talk) 00:43, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Is the 2018 NBA Summer League considered to be part of the 2018-19 NBA season? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 14:08, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

it’s preseason I guess, just like the draft, training camp, free agency, etc. Rikster2 (talk) 14:57, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

Aundre Jackson

About Aundre Jackson birthplace, some of the sources say that it is Kennedale, Texas, but those are usually stats pages [1] [2]. After a bit more digging I come across his Mclenna JC profile and it states he was born in Fort Worth, Texas [3]. Isn't it a safe bet that the Mclenna profile would be more accurate? Dammit_steve (talk) 12:07, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Yes, the college bio is usually reliable when they specifically highlight a birthplace. I am always skeptical if the player’s “birthplace” is the same as his high school town or “hometown” from their college profile and try to get . Many sites just take this city and slap it into a birthplace field, even though these are not the same thing. RealGM.com is notorious for this and as a result I NEVER believe they are a reliable source for birthplace. Rikster2 (talk) 12:10, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

I got that info from RealGM. Though I'm not sure it's accurate.User:SimonLagann (talk) 22:18, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Awards in basketball infobox

Thank you for your explanation, I used to write them in chronological order, which was the only way it made sense to me since I had not found a player article model. I'll sort them as you told me. NCAA All-American lists are a lot of work... I am currently formatting the 1985 list on my computer in order to publish it on Wikipedia, but it takes so long with all the wikilinks I have to add. --Triple 8~enwiki (talk) 06:24, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

inconsistency

Rikster, I have found 11 NBA players who signed with a team in the regular season, and did not play a minute for the team, and, properly, do not have their narrative accompanied by any mention of not playing. I am reluctant to tell you who those players are because I believe it is improper to note that as its goal is to somehow minimize making an NBA team, and do not want to help include that comment in theirs. Also, I have found no other player who includes that comment. A player would never include that in a description of another player who makes a roster, because they understand there is no difference. Also, I have serious doubts that any fan sees that as relevant information in any way. The mention of a team as a team who paid a player and who had the player on their roster should always be included in the list of teams, because, simply it is fact that the player was a member of the team, on the roster, and was compensated by the team in the regular season and or playoffs. 2601:189:57F:4235:C4A:1D95:A855:E2E7 (talk) 01:28, 11 August 2018 (UTC)ajg sr.

Dude, you are totally off the deep end on this. It isn’t a slight to say that a person signed with a team in-season but didn’t play a game - it’s notable because it’s somewhat rare (like if there are 10-11 other players besides Tony Gaffney out of thousands of NBA players). It explosions the detail of the tenure, it explains why the club doesn’t appear in the infobox or as a category, etc. I find it somewhat bizarre that you are obsessed about this. sports-reference link at Wallace Wade

Rikster2, per your edits at Wallace Wade regarding the external link to sports-reference, do you have a consensus discussion to support the inclusion of one-off, non-standardized links? The existence of Template:Basketballstats with nearly 2000 transclusions implies a consensus for use of that template to links to Basketball-Reference.com. I have no issue with expanding that template to also service links to SRCBB. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:14, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

If there is no consensus then why would you revert my edit when your original edit was that you removed it because it was a deadlink? You made it sound like there was a consensus not to use these, which is why I asked. I don’t really care if links are done via a template of not, so feel free to uodate that and if you need votes for a consensus I will chime in. Rikster2 (talk) 00:19, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
Because the overriding default is not to support random, one-off links. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:37, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
That has not been my experience at all (except I don’t agree that sports-reference.com is “random” or “one-off”). We often have school bios, stat links etc in the “External links” section. Rikster2 (talk) 01:16, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
Generally there should only be two kind of external links included for sports bios: 1) official sites, which would include a person's profile page at a team or university website or 2) structural listings from definitive websites standardized with a template. Jweiss11 (talk) 02:54, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
We are not so bureaucratic to require templates before an EL is added. No problem with adding it into {{basketballstats}} as an enhancement, not a prerequisite. It's been at the back of my mind, but has been low priority with basketball-reference having both college stats in its NBA entries now, and I think they also link to the sports-refeerence profile too. Coaching stats (pro and college) links would be a good enhancement too—Bagumba (talk) 03:58, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Waived

Hey, when a team waives a player could you just add "He was waived on October 16" or whatever and the ref? It would save work for me later. Thanks ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 19:18, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Rockets 2-way players

I was looking for official news on Rockets' site, but they are one of the teams that often do not publish less important news like - waivers of marginal players, G-league call-ups etc.

They have 16 players on their roster at the moment, which is only possible if at least one of the players is on a two-way deal (15 is the limit for regular contracts unless someone is suspended, like Meeks in Milwaukee)

Reliable source that both of them were converted: https://twitter.com/MikeAScotto/status/1051944680336908289

Also, if you select Rockets here http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine , you'll see those two marked as 2-way players.

Right, but the standard is when the team or league (G League is fine for 2-way players) announces the move. The G League tends to always announce these when they are official. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m saying the team hasn’t acknowledged these moves yet, which is the consensus standard. Rikster2 (talk) 14:25, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Thank you again

Thank you for cleaning up the articles I've created recently, I always struggle with the order of the awards in the infobox since I've seen a bit of inconsistency in the various articles I browsed trying to figure it out. --Triple 8~enwiki (talk) 15:39, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Coaching stats in infobox

Any thought on the proposed changes at User_talk:Bagumba#I_think_we_should_explore_adding_fields_to_Infobox_basketball_biography_...?—Bagumba (talk) 10:34, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

I like the look of the Thompson mock-up. I get concerned if we don't have current coaching record for active coaches it will be seen as a take-away by those who like to update college basketball coach articles. Rikster2 (talk) 13:30, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
Or "those" might just really be "the one".—Bagumba (talk) 00:33, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
No, there are some editors who change college coaches away from basketball biography when created in that template. I assume there is a reason they do this, and that the reason is that the college coach infobox contains info like record. Rikster2 (talk) 04:59, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Maybe they just "think" they are being consistent for college coaches? Is there even a "rule" on when to use one template or another for college coaches? I guess nobody pays attention to a DIII coach like David Arseneault Jr., but that's always used the basketball template.—Bagumba (talk) 05:19, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Donte Ingram

Hey, if a player is added to a G League team like Donte Ingram be sure to add a ref that they joined the squad. Usually you can jost go to the roster on the website. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 14:25, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

When I am updating hundreds of players (because nobody else is) then I can’t guarantee I hit every one. It’s a collaborative effort. Rikster2 (talk) 14:35, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
@Editorofthewiki: Wikipedia requires information be verifiable, which doesn't necessarily mean that it always has an inline citation. At any rate, like in this case, Rikster2 often (usually?) places a url in the edit summary. That aside, my experience is that his edits are trustworthy (or a rare honest mistake). Not much else I would ask for.—Bagumba (talk) 15:04, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
I know EDDY is coming from a good place. My point is just that by the time we get to the point where players are making debuts for their new teams, the articles ought to already be updated. When I’m going through and trying to ensure that, for example in this case, all new G League players are categorized correctly, I don’t have time to do major surgery on articles. Ingram was your creation, EDDY, why didn’t you update it when he was assigned to the Legends? I am sure the answer was “because I was busy with other stuff” - which is fine. But my experience is that if you let the category updates go too long it’s hard to ensure they get applied. Rikster2 (talk) 15:18, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
Hey it's really no big deal, I have no doubts that Rikster would only add accurate information. If you want, you can ignore what I just said, it's really nothing to just find and add a source. If you feel like you are the only one adding cats for new G League players, I'd be happy to help -- and I have been helping. I just think having all the information properly sourced is more important than having up-to-date categories, but that is itself important and appreciated. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 01:16, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Look, I don’t think I’m the only person doing this, but if I’m updating categories for a hundred articles and updating them along the way I’m not going to always have time to dot every I and cross every T. I take the long view on the categories - if it doesn’t get done when it happens then these lists get outdated. If you have a different priority order, knock yourself out. Marcos Leite

Yeah, but he didn't play until January of 1974, according to the college's own website, he was in Brazil before that ---> [4] Bluesangrel (talk) 04:06, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

And on the common name, I put Marquinhos because that's the common name in Brazil, and that's where he is from and lives. Marcos is common name for USA, but that was when he lived in USA over 40 years ago.Bluesangrel (talk) 04:10, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
You need to be sure that’s his COMMONNAME globally in English sources as this is English Wikipedia. And if it is, the article should be moved. I created the article and it seemed clear at the time that Marcos was his name. Rikster2 (talk) 04:11, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Spanish, French and Italian WP all have “Marcos” Rikster2 (talk) 04:13, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Marquinhos is common name in Brazil. I guess...I am confused on the common name. I thought from the country would be the correct one, but is it the one used in English then, since that's English Wiki?Bluesangrel (talk) 04:17, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
it’s English Wiki. Look at George Zidek Talk Page as a guide. Rikster2 (talk) 04:20, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
That's still confusing, because in Europe Zidek always only goes by George - they always called him that, and even on TV it would say George. Really, I never even saw Jiri used ever. But with Leite, he would be called Marquinhos basically always in Brazil. Here is Brazil Basketball Federation profile [5] - they call him Marquinhos there. So is it what the person goes by, or the language overall?Bluesangrel (talk) 04:23, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
I guess I’d ask why every language but Portuguese has him as “Marcos?” But the infobox should generally match the article name. Rikster2 (talk) 04:28, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Personally, I think you’d be better off starting a page move discussion on the Talk page and then inviting WP:BASKETBALL to participate. Rikster2 (talk) 04:29, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
OK, I will just go by what the article name says. The reason only for Portuguese is because that's only what he would be called in Brazil. I chedked another example that might be similar to this. Marcelo Huertas article. He was always known in Europe as "Marcelo", but always in Brazil (where he is from) as "Marcelinho". You could see in Brazil national team, always called "Marcelinho", even by FIBA, then always in Europe playing in clubs called "Marcelo". His page here says "Marcelo", but it looks like that was changed from it being called "Marcelinho" here before he went to NBA to play. Then it seems the article was renamed to "Marcelo", as NBA listed him as Marcelo - which makes sense, because again, that's just what they would call him in Brazil. It's just confusing though, how to have it for someone like Marcos Leite, that would be called that in USA back in 70s, but since would be called "Marquinhos" in Brazil since then. I'll just go on the infobox with article name though, that's easy to remember and makes sense.Bluesangrel (talk) 04:34, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

I don't know why you changed American to Bahamian in E. J. Montgomery's article, in his bio it says that he was born in Florida and that he played AGAINST the Bahamian national team not that he is Bahamian. Seriesphile (talk · ctb) 07:34, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

Articles

Please refrain from personal attacks as you did here in your edit summary. It's not my job to research anything above and beyond the initial article creation. However, it is YOUR job to source everything you add afterwards, esp. for a living person. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:00, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Then please stop just blindly reverting valid changes - you make 1000s of stubs that are one line and only deal with one aspect of their careers - most of these people went to college, did other things, etc. In the time it took you top revert my change you could have done a Google search for "name of player Canada basketball" and quickly gotten the same info at the time of creation. If you want to talk about sourcing, you aren't putting any independent, reliable sources on any of these Rikster2 (talk) 14:03, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
And in that same time, you could have actually cited what you've added to verify what you've added. Great if they went to college and did "other things". Find a source and add it. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:08, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
Again, you are creating stubs with ZERO independent, reliable sources. Sports-reference is usually right, but it's not sufficient as an only source. Rikster2 (talk) 14:09, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
Last time I checked, there wasn't a minimum number of cites needed to create an article. Sports Ref is a reliable source, as it's used as a source in many Featured Articles. But you've been here 10+ years, so you'd think that you'd know about citing everything you add. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:16, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
It certainly can be used as A source, but it's not sufficient as the ONLY source. To be sure, there are a lot of athlete articles that only have it as a source, but most of the ones I have seen were created back at the start of Wikipedia and haven't been significantly fleshed out. Not articles created in 2018. Rikster2 (talk) 14:18, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

On Emanuel Terry

It was listed here that he was reacquired by the Skyforce. I'm also looking for a news article about this transaction but can't find one. I updated Terry's article with him being a member again of Sioux Falls however. Babymissfortune 01:53, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, ultimately I found that so I reverted my edits. But worth mentioning the Cavs still show him as on their roster and the Skyforce haven’t added him, and there doesn’t seem to be a release anywhere. But players leaving when their 10-day contracts expire doesn’t always get a press release. Rikster2 (talk) 01:55, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

New page reviewer and AfC reviewer granted

Hi Rikster2. Apart from granting your AfC reviewer request, your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encylopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance. so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. Lourdes 03:16, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

High school ASGs

I am not a fan of including those, or all-state or any other HS honor beyond All-American or Mr. Basketball. Don't know how others feel, though. Rikster2 (talk) 12:56, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
I assume national POY like Naismith OK? I was using you as a litmus test before deciding whther to bring this up in NBA project.—Bagumba (talk) 13:03, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, but it'd be good to define parameters. With college we use (for example) the All-America teams recognized by the NCAA for consensus status as the bar for inclusion on the infobox. That is a clear inclusion standard. The other area I am seeing more activity is adding school HOF, school all-century team, etc. Personally I think the honorifics should be kept to retired numbers and really big stuff like the NBA top 50 players list. OK, I added to the list for discussion. I added the Bevo Francis Award to the "always list" - it's the main National POY award for lower divisions, there isn't much overlap with other awards that a major conference player would get. I also feel like the Senior CLASS award is in the same category with the Naismith HOF awards, but didn't move it on the list. Rikster2 (talk) 15:02, 20 February 2019 (UTC)
I left some comments at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Basketball Association/Style advice/sandbox. Figured I wouldn't clutter your talk page.—Bagumba (talk) 12:47, 21 February 2019 (UTC)

I was wondering if Maye’s page is the right place to put something about this petition. It shows how he has many avid fans and is note worthy. But I wanted to ask you before I put something on there.

Possible category for Findlay Prep alumni

Given that Findlay Prep produces so many notable basketball players (which is entirely a product of how the school is constructed) and the article seems to have a policy of including only notable alumni that meet specific alumni and not all that are notable enough for an article would it be prudent to create a "Findlay Prep Alumni" category? Let me know what you think. Best, GPL93 (talk) 14:06, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, there are plenty of high school alumni categories (example - Category:Garfield High School (Seattle) alumni). Does anyone besides basketball players go there? Rikster2 (talk) 15:06, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Nope, they aren’t even technically a high school because they outsource the academic aspect to another school so it’s literally just a basketball team. Also I think the notability standards listed on the page (such as having played at least 3 NBA seasons) should most likely be removed because it seems somewhat promotional. Thanks for your input. Best GPL93 (talk) 15:14, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

National championship Navbox players

So I created an article for Ed Beck because he clearly pass GNG and I'm pretty sure Don Mills does as well simply by virtue of being an NBA draft pick and Tim Donnelly also gets a lot of hits when you look him up so most likely passes GNG as well but there isn't a ton in terms of sources that I could find on Rob Gonzalez. Any guidance on how to find them? Thanks for putting up with me. Best, GPL93 (talk) 19:25, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

He transferred to Colorado for his last two years and represented Mexico internationally. He also led the country in free throw percentage in 1983. I did a check years ago on these templates to check for GNG and left the ones that met. It may be that the sources are mostly on newspapers.com. Rikster2 (talk) 20:15, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
Totally forgot about international play. if I can find the sources necessary I may to create the missing articles over if I have enough time. As always thanks for the help. Best, GPL93 (talk) 20:49, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

I don't edit or create articles of active players/coaches often, so I had forgotten about this convention (actually, I wasn't even 100% sure about it). On it.wiki they do not put "present", they just leave it blank after the dash for current tenures, so that's why I didn't put it, I contributed on it.wiki for so much time that some differences between it.wiki and en.wiki are still hard for me to remember, even though I stopped editing on it.wiki a few years ago. Jared Harper: What counts as an official announcement?

There are plenty of official sources indicating that Jared Harper has signed a 2-way contract with the Suns, including Harper's Twitter account, Auburn's website, and the G League website itself. In the interest of avoiding edit warring, are these good enough to warrant updating this page to indicate Harper's status? If not, what are we waiting on exactly? --AuburnShuffle (talk) 20:46, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

The G League source counts. Update the article and cite that. I’ve been checking the Phoenix Suns and NA Suns websites and Twitter and didn’t see anything official. We can use an official announcement from team or league, that’s it. Rikster2 (talk) 20:56, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

2019-2020 NBA Transactions

Hey, the only reason I had been editing is because if you go to this link, https://basketball.realgm.com/nba/transactions/league, it tells you all the different signings and the actual date on which they occur. So can you please not re-edit the page once I correct the signing dates? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks, alphatron10 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alphatron10 (talkcontribs) 12:45, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

The official date is the announcement date. Real GM is not a particularly reliable source for this type of information. Rikster2 (talk) 12:58, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

That's not true, it says the actual date for each of the signings on the player's personal pages,so I don't see how it's very different than this one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alphatron10 (talkcontribs) 13:42, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

List of 2019–20 NBA season transactions

Hey, Rikster, I'm having some concerns about your anti-RealGM policy. There are a lot of signings not being confirmed by teams or the NBA transactions page. In fact there is one notable transaction that was confirmed by RealGM that stated the Washington Wizards had signed Kellen Dunham[1], but the transactions page states that Dunham was waived by the Wizards.[2] To further add to that, neither the Wizards Twitter page has made any confirmation of the deal, nor their website. SimonLagann (talk) 19:37, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

First, it’s not MY “anti RealGM” policy. It’s WP:BASKETBALL Consensus to only use official announcement by team or league for signings and trades. With Dunham, it seems from my research that he was signed and waived within a day to an Exhibit 10 for the sole purpose of obtaining his rights for the Capital City Go-Go. When I consider that, we could reflect both without it being a big deal since at least the waiving part was announced through an official source. But I’d also ask if it even REALLY matters if that transaction gets recorded in the transaction list. It was an administrative move so frankly I don’t think it’s a crime if it were to not be included - but understand the desire for completeness. A lot of these unannounced signings (at least the ones made with a shot at making the roster) will get cleaned up as training camp rosters get released. As for RealGM, I have many concerns with the site and what I think is a lack of a journalistic mindset there. I have examples of many situations where they mislabel information and don’t make an effort to correct it of get it right. Best example is what they label “place of birth” in their player profiles, which they quite obviously pull from the “hometown” field of college bios. That’s just false and sloppy. It makes me question their precision with anything. When they report a signing, are they actually reporting a signing or just an agreement to terms (which isn’t binding)? Based on some of the edits I have unwound on transaction dates, I have a feeling that they are being similarly imprecise in their language, to the extent where an encyclopedia probably shouldn’t consider them a reliable source without corroboration. Thanks for the recommendation. I heard the announcers were talking about Rose becoming the conference leading scorer, which surprised me since he has been a solid though not outstanding player. Guess it's because the AAC is a young conference. I haven't followed Temple that much since they've been so bad, though they did pick up an impressive comeback win against SMU today, but Rose is probably deserving of an article since he will be playing professionally this year if not in the NBA. I also should try to tackle his old teammate Shizz Alston who is playing in the G League if I'm not mistaken. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 23:23, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

Yes, it’s a great resource. Some parts of the country aren’t all that well-represented (like the west coast and big sky states) but a plethora of content nonetheless. Makes you realize where some of the content holes are for the internet. Rikster2 (talk) 12:24, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

College years span

Maybe you want to formalize somewhere (e.g. Template:Infobox basketball biography docs) if you don't want the tenure to include redshirt years, freshman teams, etc. I have noticed one newer user on my watchlist adding "missing" years e.g. at Kareem's page.—Bagumba (talk) 13:22, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

OK, it has always been years played unless there is a 1-year redshirt in the middle. Like, since college years started being added 10+ years ago. Not sure why this never made the template documentation. Rikster2 (talk) 13:23, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
There's also funky cases like Frank Vogel, who got a degree at Kentucky but never played varsity there.—Bagumba (talk) 13:27, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
not supposed to show non-playing colleges in the infobox but some leniency for coaches Rikster2 (talk) 13:31, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Retired/honored jerseys

Another thing I remembered, are articles specific about retired numbers versus jerseys? I don't really follow which school does what, but I did see another user changing Chamberlain to remove "jersey" in the infobox about his Kansas retired #.—Bagumba (talk) 13:43, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

It’s usually on the program page. I don’t think Kansas retires numbers. Sounds like very thorough template documentation or a style guide needs to be put together to explain the ins and outs. The template page can’t handle all the detail Rikster2 (talk) 13:45, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Ideally would be some college basketball style guide, but WP:NBASTYLE might suffice since most would presumably have been in the NBA.—Bagumba (talk) 13:48, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Could we just broaden the NBA Style guide so it applies to college, other pro and international play? They use a common infobox, seems like fleshing out the info in the style guide would make it more broadly applicable. Rikster2 (talk) 14:02, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Honestly think international should remain separate. It's a big enough accomplishment to get all NBA editors on board. College I don't forsee any major problems if it's combined. There some editors I see that are adding second-tier HS All-Star games to ibxs, similar to how every underage national team medal is thrown into the ibx.—Bagumba (talk) 16:17, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Do Tar Heel honored numbers belong in ibx? On one hand, we allow Kansas retired jerseys. On the other, Carolina actually retires numbers too. Then would we put school hall of fames too? Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor?—Bagumba (talk) 14:42, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

No team/school/city/region HOFs. That isn’t the same as a number or jersey being retired. A lot of fan favorite non-greats get inducted into team and school HOFs. As for UNC I haven’t given it much thought. As long as it designates jersey vs number it feels in line with the others. I probably wouldn’t put them in the infobox, but I don’t have much passion either way. Rikster2 (talk) 14:48, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
At least KU and UNC have decent standards to be honored, though I was looking at Brandon Rush and I wonder if KU was liberal in letting a 2× "Wooden All-American" qualify him. Truth is, colleges these days retire numbers to get former player to donate money or do PR, and to give alumni something to be nostalgic about and donate e.g. USC and DeMar DeRozan.—Bagumba (talk) 15:45, 19 April 2020 (UTC)

Birthplace infobox

Hey. You're often the expert on this subject – a user has added "U.S." to Ray Allen's infobox birthplace citing Template:Infobox person. I have always kept country out of the infobox and I think you have too. Is there a guideline for this? We usually say it's because the US is a big country, yeah? What are your thoughts? Cheers. DaHuzyBru (talk) 15:55, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

The user is referring to Template:Infobox person guidelines. Basketball figures use Template:Infobox basketball biography, which specifically states dropping the country. Adding US is not a Wikipedia requirement. Rikster2 (talk) 16:01, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
Perfect. Thanks for that! DaHuzyBru (talk) 16:02, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
Since nationality is listed, and it's the norm for an American to be born in the US, its redundant to state US. The documentation says "Do not list country if consistent with nationality", and has a link to the discussion on it.—Bagumba (talk) 16:20, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

I'm bad at licensing when it comes to photographs. Since you seem to know how to navigate that world, I was wondering if there are any Temple Tucker photos that you know which could be added to improve his article? I see you added one for Gene Schwinger. Thanks. SportsGuy789 (talk) 23:42, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

I just Googled “Rice University yearbooks” then browsed the relevant years. Yearbook pictures before 1977 are public domain. I use the “Public domain - no notice” reason code when uploading the photo Rikster2 (talk) 23:48, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
Ahh good to know, thank you. SportsGuy789 (talk) 03:26, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
I added a photo to his article, but I'm pretty sure it's going to get deleted off of Commons. I don't know what specific steps you take to get these photos uploaded, so I wasn't able to find the same licensing type that you've been using. It didn't look the same at all compared to the photo for Schwinger, for example. SportsGuy789 (talk) 17:50, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
I tried to tag the reason, hopefully whomever works it will see what we are trying to do and clean up the formatting. I don’t know how to add the reason later, but in the Upload steps on Commons you click a radio button that the file isn’t your work, then select “another reason not listed” near the bottom of the options. There you have a link for reason codes. Once you drill down in the US to the reason codes there is one called Template:PD-US-no notice which is the one I use. Ii is for pictures in the public domain with no copyright notice prior to 1977, which includes most yearbooks. Rikster2 (talk) 18:16, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Dab conventions

I see you've moved a handful of articles lately to (basketball coach) and/or (basketball player). It's my assumption that (basketball, born XXXX) has always been the disambiguation. Was there a discussion at one of the basketball WikiProjects to change that? Thanks. SportsGuy789 (talk) 15:55, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

We normally use years but if one is solely known as a player and the other is solely known as a coach we have been using these at times. Plus, in the case of the Willie Jones who is NC A&Ts new head coach we don’t have a birthdate and I am thinking he is more well known in 2020 than the 60s NBA player Rikster2 (talk) 16:07, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
Just my 2 pennies, but I think that using years (when birth year is known) should be the standard across the board. Otherwise, editors who are either new and still learning the ropes, or those who are drive-by basketball editors and don't understand the scope of the conventions, will see (basketball coach) and (basketball player) and assume that's how all of them are supposed to be. If birth years are kept standard, there is no confusion. SportsGuy789 (talk) 16:13, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
Feel free to move the pages if you want. Rikster2 (talk) 16:15, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
I'll muse. lol SportsGuy789 (talk) 16:17, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
@SportsGuy789: At WP:NCSP, baseball and football disambiguate by position before birth year. A reader is more likely to know if they are looking for a player or coach than their birth year. Are you guys interested in formalizing basketball naming convention at NCSP?—Bagumba (talk) 13:45, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
Are you talking about playing position (e.g. “Bob Foo (Defensive back)?” Because I hate that about football and baseball articles - too “wonky.” Rikster2 (talk) 13:47, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
I wouldnt dab players by position in basketball, but distinguishing between player/coach/executive seems fine.—Bagumba (talk) 14:02, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
I don’t disagree with that but still would prefer that the “first DAB” is just “basketball.” Rikster2 (talk) 14:04, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
Definitely, its simply "basketball" if there is only one basketball person with the ambiguous name.—Bagumba (talk) 15:10, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

NFL navbox idea

Thank you for dropping by and offering what looks to be a good idea. I have used it at Template:Washington Football Team seasons. Is it what you had in mind? So far I have received no negative feedback and Dissident93 has given his support to applying this format to season, coach, starting quarterback and first-round pick navboxes for the other NFL teams with name changes. --DB1729 (talk) 23:12, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

Looks good. I’m not an active NFL project member so I hate to be pushy there. But I think the template headers with multiple team names look really busy, but I had thought some on the NFL project felt strongly about them. Maybe I was wrong there Rikster2 (talk) 23:44, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
I'm brand new to the NFL project and fairly new as a registered editor in general. Maybe my ignorance of how some project groups might be set in their ways allowed me to be so bold. :) --DB1729 (talk) 00:50, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

NBA champions navboxes

What is the SOP for who gets included? I happened to notice that Earl Barron and Dorell Wright were removed from the 2005–06 navbox because they weren't on the playoffs roster (per bbr). Barron's profile still has the navbox on it even though he's not listed on it. Both Barron and Wright show NBA champion in their infobox honors (FWIW, an IP added Wright back a few months ago.

Either both Barron and Wright get included, or neither do. How does this work? SportsGuy789 (talk) 05:28, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

You need to be on the playoff roster. Shouldn’t be in the template or in the infobox honors otherwise. Rikster2 (talk) 11:36, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
Got it, thanks. SportsGuy789 (talk) 13:44, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

A CBA question

Hello! I have seen that you seem to own the 1994–95 CBA Official Guide. If you do, would you mind checking if Tony Harris was listed as the 1993–94 CBA scoring champion? He did lead the league in scoring average but he only played 23 games, I am not sure whether he had played the minimum amount of games needed to be the scoring leader. It was the only case among the CBA statistical leaders in which I could not verify the leader on more than one source. I had found the confirmation that Harris was considered the top scorer on another website I can't remember, but if there's an official source for that, it would be great. Thank you in advance! --Triple 8~enwiki (talk) 08:54, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

I can check this evening. If you have access to any of the CBA guides post-1995 they usually show past year league leaders. Rikster2 (talk) 12:27, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
No, the guide lists Brian Oliver (Rockford) as the leading scorer at 22.8 ppg. They also show Alphonso Ford at 22.8 with more games/points, but when you do the math Oliver is at 22.79 and Ford is 22.77, which is why I assume they show Oliver as the scoring champ. Rikster2 (talk) 17:27, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I corrected the article. --Triple 8~enwiki (talk) 12:44, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Damian Lillard Bubble Honors

I noticed that you reverted recent changes on the Damian Lillard page that reflected official recognition he'd received during the ongoing NBA Bubble, including his selection as the Bubble MVP and an All-Bubble 1st Team member. You cited insufficient consensus, but I've yet to see any developed objection to the inclusion of these awards on the player's career highlights.

I'd like to learn a bit more about your view. Are you of the opinion that these official NBA awards do not belong on his career highlights? If so, why? They've received extensive media coverage and are now an important part of the player's full profile. Any elaboration on your view would be appreciated. -- ExParte talk | contribs 19:15, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Basketball Association/Archive 39#NBA Bubble "All-X" Teams in infobox? so feel free to take part. Generally, the infobox is not meant to list all honors in a player’s career. For example, “all-tournament team” honors never are included. This is the first time we have ever had a bubble so there is no precedence, but in my opinion these designations are more similar to all-tournament than All-NBA honors. Rikster2 (talk) 20:30, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Damian Lillard Page Rollback

Hey. It seems like you mistakenly rolled back my recent change to the Damian Lillard page that reflected the consensus that, even if it's an open question whether Bubble MVP should be highlighted in the infobox, all Bubble awards (including MVP and All-Bubble) are worth mentioning in the body of the page.

If this was intentional, however, I recommend that you revisit the discussion at WT:NBA where every editor (with, I suppose, you as the only exception) agreed that such honors should at least be included in the body of the article. -- ExParte talk | contribs 20:47, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Every editor agreed? When I reverted your edit there were 2 !votes to include (including you) and 2 !votes not to - that is hardly consensus. You need to wait for the discussion (that you started) to be over before you re-add this. Rikster2 (talk) 20:54, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
Actually, you are right - when I viewed the change in the code window it looked like it was in the infobox, but I see now that it was in the list of awards in the body. Sorry for the error. Rikster2 (talk) 20:57, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

All good. -- ExParte talk | contribs 00:09, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

College coach stints in infoboxes

I know for college coaches we usually just list the school and not the mascot name. However, I noticed that Clyde Drexler just listing "Houston" is ambiguous when he also played for the Rockets. Do you think it should just be left as is, add "Cougars" as a one-off, or add mascots to all? Thought I'd pass it by you first since you drove the retired numbers convention.—Bagumba (talk) 06:42, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Norman Taylor

Thanks for the edits to Norman Taylor (basketball). Do you have any references for his high school? I couldn't find anything and a general search of Louis D. Brandeis doesn't bring up much. Also, the UB source regarding New York City only states "Hailing from New York City", so I wasn't confident in listing that as the place of birth. Are there any old college documents you can find? Thanks. DaHuzyBru (talk) 04:13, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Found it on Newspapers.com. Once I knew he was from NYC and the years he played college basketball it was pretty easy. I will need to retrace my steps though. On the birthplace, you can delete it if you aren't comfortable, but I replaced "Bridgeport, Connecticut," which I know was wrong. Rikster2 (talk) 14:10, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Deividas Sirvydis

According to MLive, Deividas Sirvydis left Hapoel Jerusalem to join the Dtroit Pistons for training camp. Does that mean he is on the Pistons? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 20:38, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

If it’s actually training camp, and it may well be since there is no Summer League, then yeah we would update it once the Pistons do (like releasing a training camp roster or announcing the deal outright). Still needs to be announced by the team or league. Rikster2 (talk) 23:36, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
The thing is, I don't think training camp begins until early December. So is he just trying out for the team now? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 18:04, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

Not always one and the same....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 19:24, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
When Goff was in college, his hometown on his official bio was listed as Novato (see here). In truth, colleges usually get this info from mailing addresses, not school addresses. Rikster2 (talk) 19:27, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
You have a source for Nesbitt being born in Fort Lauderdale. This[12] says he was born in Deerfield. See the confusion I'm talking about. I would believe Fort Lauderdale over Deerfield because DB had no hospital within its boundaries at the time of his birth....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 19:43, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
BTW I checked that Nesbitt source of yours. It says Deerfield Beach but doesn't say hometown. BTW I went to DBHS where I graduated in 1979. I was a resident of Lighthouse Point from 1976-79 and lived a 1.5 block walk from DB....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 20:00, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
It's hometown - the way the profiles are formatted doesn't label it as such, but the roster on page 18 clearly does. Yes, places of birth are a whole other animal - I always look for a clear source that a person was actually born somewhere before adding it to an article - as was the case with this source. A bigger issue is that a lot of register sources just take the college hometown and call it birthplace, which is a problem. But that isn't the same problem we are talking about. Max Strus preseason

What matters is how much coverage he received. It's also not like he was on a summer league team. He was signed to two-way, converted to a standard NBA contract and the coverage of the competition between him and Javonte Green received was above average. Best, GPL93 (talk) 20:16, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

No, what matters is that we are consistent with how we treat teams for which a player never actually plays for (or even makes a final roster). When a player doesn't appear in a game, there is no category and it is not added to the club history. How is it consistent to add separate sub-headers about it (setting aside if a 2 line entry even needs a subject header). He did not receive such coverage that it demands a section - that would be something like Andrew Bynum's stint with the Sixers where he never played. Now, I am re-establishing my edit and you are at WP:3RR. If you want to push the issue, my recommendation is start a consensus conversation at the article Talk page or WP:NBA since I am sure this isn't the last time this situation will happen. that’s cool - I really don’t need to be the one who creates the articles, but since he played in the CBA I had him in my list. I’m not at home, but can check when I get back tomorrow. Pretty sure he just played for one CBA team, though Rikster2 (talk) 22:34, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I just wanted to understand why you removed from the highlights the following achievments: 3× AP Little College All-American (1970–1972), 3× UPI Little College All-American (1970–1972) and College Basketball Third All-Time Scorer (4,045 points) ?.Tecmo (talk) 18:47, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

There is no consensus to include these things in the infobox. He’s already listed as NAIA and Division 2 All-American for those years and the NCAA guide uses the little All-AMerican teams as one of the inputs. So it’s duplicative. And being second or third in anything doesn’t go in the infobox - should be noted in the prose. Rikster2 (talk) 18:54, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Trace Cureton

Hey. I see you edited the Trace Cureton page back in January. I'm considering nominating it for AfD but it appears to have a lot of support from different accounts since late last year (perhaps socks?). What do you reckon? His NCAA D1 stint at Utah State was nothing to ride home about and I don't see too much to support GNG from that front. He has only played "professionally" in an Australian third-tier league and it's all a bit cringe considering the guy himself links his Wikipedia page on his website. I've cleaned it up considerably as it had a lot of BS. Cheers. DaHuzyBru (talk) 03:51, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

You might not care at this point, but it's now been moved to Draft:Trace Cureton. Thanks anyway. DaHuzyBru (talk) 09:42, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Hey mate. Just wanted to get your thoughts on the reasoning behind removing the hidden notes at Anderson Varejão. How do you see trying to avoid users adding "NBA champion" to the infobox moving forward? Thanks. DaHuzyBru (talk) 15:19, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

I left one at the top. If somebody ignores that 2 more in a list isn't going to stop them. Seemed silly to put the same note in three times. Rikster2 (talk) 15:23, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
True, sorry missed that. Yeah, fair enough. Cheers. DaHuzyBru (talk) 07:16, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Draft:Ezequiel Matthysse

Hi! Could you check Draft:Ezequiel Matthysse and post it as an article on wikipedia please? Thank you and I look forward to your help! :) Emat20211 (talk) 13:40, 31 May 2021 (UTC)Emat20211

Pics

I'll hold off a bit on making a direct comment on the draft pics, in case any immediate admin action is needed (WP:INVOLVED). Interesting they've been mentioned as a WP:DUCK towards the bottom here; I don't have time to pursue that angle right now. They definitely have WP experience, either logged out or otherwise.—Bagumba (talk) 04:03, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

if you do ever look into that May want to compare to this user for grins. Rikster2 (talk) 04:34, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
The AGF take would be lots of users just copy what is already on similar pages. Would probably need diffs on a few other similarities besides agreeing on this topic, then a CU might be warranted.—Bagumba (talk) 05:08, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Inquiry about Infobox college basketball team

Good morning. From the outset, I apologize if you are the wrong contact. Recently, I created the page U Sports women's basketball (which is the Canadian version of NCAA). As I was looking to start doing some pages of U Sports women's teams, but I am struggling with the template of the {{Infobox college basketball team}}. Of note, I wanted to include a section for U Sports championships and tournament appearances. Are you able to please add this to the template or advise me on how to do this? Your time is appreciated. 66.46.77.194 (talk) 12:46, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

When is a player an NBA Champion?

Hello and good morning. I am an Italian Wikipedia user. I've seen some old arguments of yours regarding the criteria for determining when a player is NBA champion, especially the cases of Varejao and now Torrey Craig. I personally agree that a player cut or traded in the middle of the season cannot be considered an NBA champion even if the franchise gives him the NBA ring, but I was wondering if there are and, if so, where can I find official sources that they determine that those types of players are not NBA champions. I think that our italian Wikipedia does not have a solution yet, because I see Varejao with two NBA Titles (Cavs 2016 and Warriors 2017) and even Torrey Craig with an NBA Championship in his honors and awards, no matter the result of the NBA Finals. Thank you very much in advance for your reply and your time, and I apologize if I violated some rules asking you this question. Lovethisgame97 (talk) 12:06, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

If they are on the roster for the playoffs (injured ok). Not if they left the team prior to the playoffs. Teams deciding to give players rings doesn’t have any effect on it Rikster2 (talk) 14:13, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Infobox

Hey -- just wondering. Is a conference tournament MVP of all-tournament team considered worthy of mention in an infobox? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 01:16, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Conference tourney MVP yes. But all-tournament team (for any tournament) never goes in the infobox. Rikster2 (talk) 01:22, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

"→" in Career information of the article Luke Nelson (basketball)

Hello, is there a reason, why there is a → at Career history of the article Luke Nelson (basketball) (at Real Betis)? --WayNeTraiN123 (talk) 22:54, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

It signifies that he was on loan with a team while under contract with another. Rikster2 (talk) 22:56, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

Do you have any information on the transfer destinations of Diego Willis and KC Ndefo? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 12:29, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

  • Willis has apparently transferred to Stephen F. Austin. Not sure about Ndefo, hopefully more information will be available soon. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 14:01, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, I missed this - I don't have any info on Ndefo but will keep an eye out. Rikster2 (talk) 14:17, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Gulf Star Conference POY

My newspapers.com subscription lapsed so I put in a request w/Wikipedia to have it re-extended; I'm waiting on approval at the moment. The reason I bring that up is because I want to create Gulf Star Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. I think it'd probably be easy to find the three guys who won it, since it would have only been 1985, 1986, and 1987. A couple sources that could point us quickly in the right direction are this and this.

Since it might be a while before I get my newspapers.com sub again, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind starting to poke around at sources to find those CPOYs? SportsGuy789 (talk) 14:25, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

I actually have the names at home, I pieced it together sometime last year. I will reply this evening w the info and yes, I can help research Rikster2 (talk) 17:20, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Awesome! Thanks. Assuming none of those three players have articles yet, I'd be happy to immediately hop in to create at least 1 to start (to avoid all red links), and more than that time permitting. SportsGuy789 (talk) 18:51, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
The names are: 1985: Bruce Allen, Sam Houston State; 1986: Lorenzo Duncan, Sam Houston State; 1987: Eric Rhodes, Stephen F. Austin. I also have the coaches and freshmen of the year. Rikster2 (talk) 23:05, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
Cool. As soon as I get newspapers.com back, I'll try and get to this. It'll be a good defunct CPOY link the awards navbox. SportsGuy789 (talk) 03:30, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Article is live. SportsGuy789 (talk) 14:53, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
Also created American West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. SportsGuy789 (talk) 18:03, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

NBA Transactions

Hey just a heads up. Make sure to cite a ref when players are waived/added to rosters. I see you usually put it in the edit summary but it is helpful to add a ref to the article itself. Not a big deal. ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 22:38, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

I can help with stuff if you have questions. I made some formatting edits to Gary Chivichyan you might want to review. Welcome to Wikipedia Rikster2 (talk) 20:17, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

Re: Chiney

I made the wrong assumption about your change. It was obvious the word "women" was unnecessary in the sentence. Your edit comment was ambiguous about whether it applied to the article. There I could see it possibly going either way and my main line of thinking was "well there's an article about it..." And there was some discussion on the talk page about it having separate rules - but especially as I look at the poor quality of the article I'm with you on this one. --John (User:Jwy/talk) 15:27, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, there actually isn't a sport called "women's basketball." There is a sport called "basketball" and gender is one way it is segmented (others are by age group or level of play). Effectively what happens is that only the womens' side shows a gender qualifier and the generic "basketball" is assumed to be male. For example, a common lead is "Bob Smith as an American professional basketball player," while you see people trying to write "Barbara Smith is an American professional women's basketball player." Yes, there are slightly different rules for women's college (or professional) basketball and men's, but that is also true as you move age groups or from country to country or between FIBA rules and NBA rules. It's still the same sport. And it is also true that if you are talking about "she/her" playing in the "Women's National Basketball Association" then a gender identifier serves no purpose. No offense taken from your edits, just trying doing some auditing of WNBA articles from a formatting perspective. Rikster2 (talk) 18:03, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Grant Golden - headed for historical achievement?

Assuming that Grant Golden earns at least a third-team All-Atlantic 10 selection, will he be the first college men's basketball player ever (all divisions) to be named to five all-conference teams? SportsGuy789 (talk) 06:22, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

I remembered somebody in the P12 way back but didn't remember who it was until I went looking for it. It had struck me at the time as very unusual. Rikster2 (talk) 16:51, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
Nichols is about to get some historically elite company this year, then. SportsGuy789 (talk) 17:04, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Conference tourney champion categories

Thoughts on Category:Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament championship seasons and Category:Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament championship seasons?

I'm considering nominating for deletion. I can see the argument being, "the winners of these tournaments receive automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament" as a defining characteristic. But to me, winning a conference tourney is notable for the team's season article but I'm not convinced it's a necessary category. What's your take? SportsGuy789 (talk) 22:15, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

I don’t have a strong feeling either way. Might be good to CfD just to see where the line is (if it got any traction) Rikster2 (talk) 22:58, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Do you know when the school changed from UNC Charlotte to just Charlotte? To update {{Charlotte 49ers men's basketball navbox}}. SportsGuy789 (talk) 17:22, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

I don't know. I tried to find that info last night but couldn't. But the Final Four team was definitely "UNC Charlotte." I want to say they were UNCC into the late 90s. Rikster2 (talk) 18:21, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
Based on Charlotte 49ers it sounds like athletics dropped "UNC" in 2000. Rikster2 (talk) 18:24, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

College retired numbers vs. retired jerseys

Whats the difference between retired numbers and retired jerseys in college sports? Megacheez (talk) 16:22, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

if the number is retired no one can ever wear it again. If the jersey is retired/honored that number can be worn again in the future but the players jersey is put on display in the arena. For UNC, number 23 is retired (Michael Jordan) but number 42 has been honored by 3 different players (Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty, Jerry Stackhouse) but can be worn by anyone. Some programs don’t actually retire numbers (I think Kansas falls into that category). Rikster2 (talk) 16:35, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

Question

If a player is on a team but does not play (e.g. a redshirt), should it be mentioned in the infobox or categories? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 14:48, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

No category unless they play. For infobox it depends. If currently redshirting awaiting eligibility then yes. If it’s a past school and they didn’t play a game then no Rikster2 (talk) 14:56, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
Should we update the statistics for the players on teams unlikely to make the postseason, or wait until the brackets are announced? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 01:30, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

2020 NBA Draft

Regarding NBA early entrants in 2020, I'm aware that Lincoln Bernhard was not on the league's published list. I know that, because I trained him at the time. His agent tried to get him on, but because Lincoln had not played a college game due to multiple surgeries and had to sit for 2 full seasons, the league accepted his early entry papers but did not place him on the final list. He's listed as an early entrant on RealGM, and there's also a local article about him declaring for the draft. He gave up his entire college eligibility, so I'm thinking it'd be applicable for him to make the list. Not 100% sure how the wikipedia editors do it though. As far as where he is now, he suffered labral tears in both shoulders at the end of his training prep to attempt to play in the G League, but last I heard, he's targeting next season as a return to the court. Should at least have a few teams looking to work him out, had contact with the Skyforce and now defunct Northern AZ Suns when COVID protocol limited any in-person workouts. 33ski (talk) 22:37, 7 March 2023 (UTC)

Look, first if you have a relationship with the subject then you should look at WP:COI because you really shouldn't edit articles pertaining to someone you have a personal interest in. Second, it seems clear that the league didn't take his entry seriously or they would have included him on their final list, which is the list the teams go by. Real GM is not considered a WP:RELIABLE SOURCE because there is not very good quality control on the site and they frequently publish erroneous information. Rikster2 (talk) 23:24, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
Not important in the long term anyways what list he got on, just was wondering. But if the league puts a kid on the list who "pondered trying out as a walk-on somewhere" but decided to instead forgo college, (Michael Lenoir), the league clearly puts pretty much anyone on that list who has played a post-grad/college game within the last year of said draft. But not the case then for a player who had to sit for 2 whole seasons without playing and then declared. 33ski (talk) 00:28, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
What do you think, @Bagumba:? Sports are not specifically called out in WP:OVERLINK and I tend to think there is value in linking the sport for those who may know the name but don't have much familiarity with it. It also seems dumb to link "basketball player" and redirect to "basketball" anyway but I have seen plenty of dumb things on Wikipedia. Rikster2 (talk) 18:57, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Scratched my head a bit, but I think you meant to add this at WT:NBA instead. I'll respond there. —Bagumba (talk) 19:08, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Adding a player to the page

I was doing a search of past Morehead State University men's basketball players and noticed that a few players are missing from the list of names. I'm trying to track down some people and this was the reason for the search. There is a Ramon C. Kelly, Quinton Smith and Kyle Hankins. I couldn't find any information on them and was hoping to pull up all the men from these rosters. I know they played around the time Ricky Minard, Chad McKnight and Quentin Pryor were attending school and on the team. It would be great to get them added.
