Keeping in touch edit

Hey, I just wanted to update you on what I've been up to, and some of the things going on around the 'pedia that you might not be aware of...

As you know, I'm quite involved with Wikipedia's navigation systems.

One of the systems I had not been directly involved in for years, the portals, was nominated for deletion (yes, all portals, and the portal namespace) in an RfC that drew over 500 Wikipedians to comment.

It wasn't going well for portals, due to the pile on effect. I noticed that they hadn't notified the pages nominated for deletion. So, I intervened. :)

Many editors came to the portals' defense, and it turned out that many people are interested in portals, and we now have a thriving Portals WikiProject of 84 members.

We're in the process of automating portals, and I thought you might be interested in what we've been up to, and what we are up to now.

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   22:24, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

P.S.: By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC conflict and the Portals WikiProject.

That's cool. I started some work in this direction with the Trinidad and Tobago Portal, when it was threatened with deletion. At the time it seemed there were people who preferred deletion to rescue. I think automation can be very useful to seed portals, and to make them more maintainable. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 09:24, 30 May 2018 (UTC).Reply

  Technical news

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

  Arbitration

  • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

MfD nomination of Wikipedia:MOS:EL edit

Wikipedia:MOS:EL, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:MOS: and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Wikipedia:MOS:EL during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 17:05, 3 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Cambridge, Mass. edit

The abbreviation "Mass." is used is to clarify that Harvard University Press is located in the American Cambridge and not the British Cambridge.[1][2] Why in the world would we spell out "Massachusetts" (or any other state name) in the location field of a citation? If that's some new rule, my new rule will be to omit state names. (Please note that I'm not asking about the postal abbreviation "MA", which should only be used on the outside of an envelope.) — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 02:34, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ah, an American comments that the United States Postal Service has a standardized list of states and territories, so Massachusetts is MA.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 19:18, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sunday London Meetup edit

Rich,

I am in London now, and I will see you on Sunday.

Do you have a Wikipedia hat? I will have a gift hat for whoever wants it, but of course you have first DIBS. Pictures of one hat are on my talk page, with User:Smallbones dog wearing one. Smallbones (Peter) is a Philadelphia area Wikipedian.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 19:56, 8 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

thank you. Sadly I couldn't make it on Sunday, but I do have a hat you kindly gave me. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 14:58, 11 June 2018 (UTC).Reply

Nomination of Panther motorcycle (Philippines) for deletion edit

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Panther motorcycle (Philippines) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Panther motorcycle (Philippines) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. I have G7'd the article. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 13:48, 18 June 2018 (UTC).Reply

Dictionary of pseudonyms edit

I’ve been sorting through various redlists for Women in Red, and I came across the Dictionary of Pseudonyms list which you put together about 10 months ago. I decided to add it to the Redlist index, but it needed some cleaning up to be suitable for the project.

I removed blue links, and all the (obvious) male names and reformatted the list to be more consistent with our other lists. It occurred to me that you might want to keep some of the material for your own work. The best version to copy from would probably be this revision, which is after I removed several blue links but before I started removing the men from the list.

Thanks for all your work on this! NotARabbit (talk) 00:06, 14 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

You are welcome, and thanks for the link. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 12:58, 18 June 2018 (UTC).Reply

Invitation to participate in study edit

Hello,

I am E. Whittaker, an intern at Wikimedia with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. A full write-up of the study can be found here: m:Research:Civil_Behavior_Interviews. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at ewhit@umich.edu in order to schedule an interview.

Thank you Ewitch51 (talk) 20:26, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

wikimania-l edit

I've got a mailman message saying your subscription to mail:wikimania-l has been disabled due to too many fatal bounces. Would you like to check your email settings? If you drop me a line with the "email this user" button I can forward you the bounce notification. Deryck C. 11:20, 17 June 2018 (UTC) (writing in my capacity as wikimania-l listadmin)Reply

For some reason the Wikipedia email didn't include your email address so I can't forward the bounce message directly. Anyway I have copied the plain-text of the bounce message to the "email this user" form on your user-page. If you haven't got an email from me through Wikipedia, send me another email with your preferred email address in it... Deryck C. 13:11, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK looks like there is an issue with my domain name. I have resubscribed with a different email address. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 15:44, 20 June 2018 (UTC).Reply
