RFA Thanks

AWB

Earlier you reported that you were having display problems with WP:AWB in version 4.0.0.0. Can you do us a favor and upgrade to the newest version and let us know if you are still having the problem? If you could let us know at WP:AWB/DEV whether or not you have the problem, that would be great. Thanks again. —METS501 (talk) 14:45, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Vigo Auguste Demant

I removed the speedy deletion tag from Vigo Auguste Demant and replaced it with {{cleanup}} and {{tone}}. It does indeed read like an obit (if it is, I could not find the source), but that seems like something that can be fixed by normal editing. Angus McLellan (Talk) 22:43, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Cologne Cathedral

Hi, Sawyer! The position of the height box was subject to discussion and was placed where it is because, really, it's pretty meaningless.

There are several lists of Height. There is "tallest structure". Cologne was the tallest structure for a while, as stated in the intro. Then there is "tallest habitable structure" . This comes complete with the info box, and a proviso that the building is entirely habitable from top to bottom. Basicaly, it's nonsense. The spires of Cologne Cathedral are not habitable. A person can go up inside them, but they are much less habitable than level three of the Eiffel Tower, which is excluded (because it isn't habitable). So adding a sentence to the introduction to make it inline with the stupid box, is to make a doubly meaningless statement.

When we say that it was the tallest structure before the Washington Monument- then it's meaningful. To say it had the tallest spires before Ulm was completed is meaningful. But to talk about it in terms of a "habitable building" as against an "uninhabitable structure" is nonsense. The Eiffel Tower and the Washington Monument both have fully habitable rooms inside them, but are excluded from the list.

This is the reason why that box is given low priority in that article. On the other hand, the fact that Cologne Cathedral is a World Heritage Site is important. It has impacted highly upon the city, aids its preservation and attracts visitors.

I have to add that although your positioning of the box may not have afffected the layout on your computer screen, it stuffed up mine, and would be much worse on a wide screen. The effect is to push the next image and all the info beside it down so that below the table of contents, the Heading stays in place but then there is a gap of about 3 inches to the info. Merging List of Congressional Gold Medal recipients

Hi Reywas92. When you propose to merge two pages you should also start the discussion for why you think they should be merged. If you simply add the tag you're not really accomplishing anything or improving Wikipedia (that's why you're here, right?), only increasing bureaucracy. I've started the discussion myself with a comment on why I do not think that the two pages should be merged. ~MDD4696 13:31, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Provinces visited userbox

Good morning :O I am completely new at userbox usage. Is your «provinces visited» userbox for anyone to use, and how does function? Thank you--Tallard 11:46, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

hi hi hi, yeah, my self declared nickname is Frozen-Newfie-Frog :). It's a long story but I probably should add Nova-Scotia, as I was conceived there, but there's no cute nickname for NS. My mother gave birth to me in Newfoundland, then married a Quebecer, who also happened to be Acadian as my biological father was, then we moved to Québec when I was four, where I lived until 1996, when, that's when it gets complicated... since 1996 I've shared time between Yukon (my driver's license says I'm a Yukoner...), Quebec, and Florida! I was anglo til age til age 2, then life and Fr schooling transformed me into a bilingual, as my mother insisted on English in the home and for extra homework! So as far as this month goes, I've been in the Yukon :) snow and ice have already covered everything and days are getting shorter. I'm going to try out the box now, thanks.--Tallard 05:07, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

speedies on fictional characters

speedy as non-notable is available only only real people, not for fictional characters,--it is necessary to use PROD or AFD. Nor is speedy availably for reasons of "blatant how-to", or for "non-notable phrase" I and two other admins have all been changing these to WP:PROD. nice

I love your intresting facts, I will be hijaking them onto my page. Thanks!-- Penubag  09:14, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Sure, take as many of my facts as you want. I, like you, also compiled those during my life, and I will continue to update it whenever possible. About the ASCII art, I have made some before by hand, but as you can guess, take a long time. So the ASCII art you saw on that page was done with a program. Do you have a request? I can make an AsCII art for you of your face, if you want! -- Penubag  17:19, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Sure, send me any picture any time! I never thought of transcluding your page, which I have just done. See you 'round-- Penubag  01:23, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
  The Barnstar of Diligence
Reywas, unfortunatly, your recent edits have earned you a barnstar. Thank you for spending the time and peer reviewing my most treasured facts. I will change all of my archival documents (except some hard copies). Thanks again!-- Penubag  03:13, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

I also added your name to my facts as special thanks. As another note, I will be upgrading my facts with more detail. I will inform you when I am done. :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Penubag (talkcontribs) 03:21, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Your welcome. I will be adding a bunch more facts soon. I will inform you when I have updated them. Oh, and it says unfortunatly because I was kinda alluding the vandal messages to add some humor , but of course it's not funny anyways :)-- Penubag  04:21, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Fellowship of Friends

I noticed you edited the Fellowship of Friends article in the past. There is an issue with Conflict of Interest (COI) at the moment and the article has been stubbed and protected and I thought that it would be nice if you could voice your opinion on the Talk page. If you are too busy, that's OK. Thank you in advance. Love-in-ark 05:09, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Shedd Aquarium

Do not delete this image again. It is appropriate for the article, and your reasoning is flawed. The image is not of the person, so the fact that the person is in silhouette isn't relevant, nor is the fact that the image is "artistic." If you wish to delete artistic images from Wikipedia, you might well start with the "featured pictures." If you wish to remove this image - an image that has been in this article for almost two years, then seek consensus first. Deleting the image outright - especially when contested, is highly inappropriate. Rklawton (talk) 23:36, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

I've gone ahead and started a thread to determine consensus regarding your proposed deleting of the tank image from this article. You are invited to participate. Rklawton (talk) 23:45, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Single / double quotation marks

The article Quotation mark uses the terms "single quotation marks" and "double quotation marks" without explanation. I think these terms should be explained, which I attempted to do in the edit that you reverted. Your edit summary for the reversion stated: not really appropropriate [sic] there, as single is rarely correct. I do not understand this. Even if "single is rarely correct", should the term, which is used all over the article, not be explained? Furthermore, single quotation marks are used in examples all over the article. Are these rare instances of correct use, or is this perhaps incorrect usage? Can you supply a source for your claim that "single is rarely correct"? Single style is fairly common in Britain. The Times uses single quotes in headlines, straps and standfirsts, as in the headline of this article. In the U.S., it is common to use single style for quotations inside quotations; the traditional English style is just the other way around; see e.g. section 4 (Punctuation) of the style guide for the International Journal of Refugee Law (an Oxford Journal).[1] --Lambiam 00:26, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Famous Hoosiers

I don't agree with the changes made and the warning added. The word "notable" is very debatable. I mean how do you decide who goes on the Famous Hoosiers part of the Indiana page and who doesn't. Please respond on my talk page, TheHoosierState89 (talk) 22:15, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

prod2 tags

Just a heads-up, the prod2 tag shouldn't be substituted. Thanks! --UsaSatsui (talk) 05:21, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

John(ny) Williams

The reason I put that in was three-fold:

  • His initial moniker was "Johnny Williams," and many of his initial recordings—including Lost in Space and those with Frankie Laine—list that in the credits.
  • People searching for those earlier works may not be aware that "Johnny" is the appropriate search term.
  • The name is also noted in the body of the article under "Early life and family."

Anyway, if you disagree, feel free to revert it. (I won't change it again.) Thanks! –TashTish (talk) 19:42, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Find and replace again

I earlier asked how to only find and replace 'dog', but not 'dogs' with 'dogs'. Someone replied to use regex 'dog\b', but I tried this leaving both the regex box checked and unchecked, but it still didn't work. Dogs was changed into dogss. What should I do?

find: \bdog\b
Replace: cat
example text: dogs dog cats dogs dog
result: dogs cat cats dogs cat

I am still learning this but the above worked in the test regex

Hope that helps --Jeanenawhitney (talk) 18:57, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

What are you actually lookig for? Give me some examples. You can reply here.--Jeanenawhitney (talk) 21:17, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Oftentimes there will be just an apostrophe at the end of a word, rather than the correct apostrophe-s. I want to, for example, change Marcus' to Marcus's with s'\b → s's, which doesn't seem to work. Reywas92Talk 21:23, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I am not sure that can be done. It may be done within a module. I can catch it like this find: (.*?)' replace: $1's example: this is a test sams' page looks like this.

And the result is sams's which is not what you want. there is a way but I am not that knowledgeable on how to do it. I think it has to be done with multiple rules. Bring up the question what you just told me what you are trying to do. I to would be interested in seeing how it is done. I am only one week old on this learning regexes. Jeanenawhitney (talk) 21:40, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Ok here is what I came up with it should be two rules they must follow each other in order.

EXAMPLE: This is a test of someones’ edit.

First Rule plural s' and add 's
Find: (.*?)'
Replace: $1's
Returns: This is a test of someones’s edit.

Second rule what we just changed to remove the first s's
Find: (.*?)s's
Replace: $1's
Returns: This is a test of someone's edit.

Try that out. Good luck --Jeanenawhitney (talk) 22:04, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I figured it out, in one rule!

EXAMPLE: This is a test of someones' edit and how about nick's. Petes' but not Pete's
Find: (.*?)s'
Replace: $1's
Result: This is a test of someone's edit and how about nick's. Pete's but not Pete's

speedies on fictional characters, objects, etc

Speedies on fictional characters, objects, or in fact anything in faction, can not be speedied as non-notable, per WP:CSD. You need to use WP:PROD, and, if the prod is removed, then WP:AFD. DGG (talk) 22:49, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I keep forgetting that. I really think CSD should be expanded; it's pretty obvious that that will be deleted. Reywas92Talk 22:52, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Neuschwanstein Castle

Hi Reywas92, I re-renamed Neuschwanstein to Neuschwanstein Castle cause I think it is the more formal name. It is also used like this in titles of the books about the castle and on the internet, see http://www.neuschwanstein.de (also e.g. publications). I hope I hereby improved my explaination why I did this (the move explanation boxes are so small :) ). I think the German site should contain 'Schloss' as well. James Barker AFD (Advice)

Hope you don't take this the wrong way, but it's a bit of friendly advice. If in an AFD, your arguement is strong, state it once and the closing admin will see it. But if you argue every keep vote, it exudes weakness on your part and makes it look personal. It makes it look like you're desprate to have it deleted. Take the advice or leave it. Best wishes.--Cube lurker (talk) 00:01, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Jeopardy! set evolution

A sentence like "the 'monitors' were not actually monitors yet" loses meaning when the quotes are removed from the first instance of "monitors". In most of the cases of quotes you removed, the quoted words referred to set pieces that were not actually the objects they were built to resemble. If you want to come up with alternate names for these set pieces, that might work. Simply removing the quotes isn't a useful solution. Robert K S (talk) 21:37, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Apostrophe

See the wiki article here: Apostrophe. You will note that the use of a dangling apostrophe after "Singular nouns ending with an "s" or "z" sound" is not incorrect, it is just not supported by "Most respected sources", and there are common alternatives.

It follows that wandering around changing word' to word's is not correcting, rather it is enforcing a style guideline on articles written by other people. And unless you are a subject expert on pronunciation on each of the articles you edit, there is no reason to expect that your personal style will match that of an actual subject expert. regards, 150.101.166.15 (talk) 06:25, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
