Ganesh Jayanthi edit

Hi!

Thanks for the assessment of Junagarh Fort article. I have completed my inputs for the Ganesh Jayanthi article, which you may like to post at an appropriate time. I am working on expanding the artcile on Shankha. Would you like to join me? I hope you had a nice holiday.--Nvvchar (talk) 05:51, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

See here for the draft article on Shankha User:Nvvchar/sandbox/Saptha Badri. --Nvvchar (talk) 16:51, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I have seen the changes made by you in the Shankha article. Fine. I have only made minor edits. I will move it to main space if you have completed your inputs. Pl post it on DYK as a joint work with a suitable hook. Thanks.--Nvvchar (talk) 00:14, 24 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Do you still want me to work on Diskit Monastery article ?--Nvvchar (talk) 08:18, 24 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Since I have already almost completed my inputs on Diskit at User:Nvvchar/Sandbox 2, You may like to use it. Giving credit to me or not is left to you. I am moving Shankha to main space in a while.--Nvvchar (talk) 11:36, 25 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Moved to main space. It can be nominated now.--Nvvchar (talk) 11:49, 25 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes we have noted your views on Kathmandu article. The inputs for the history section is still not complete and after that the whole section will be further reviewed. Also, please move Ganesh Jayanthi article to main space at your convenience.--Nvvchar (talk) 12:24, 25 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Excellent hook. Pl consider adding a colourful img of relgious person blowing the Shankha may also attract lot of viweres to the article.--Nvvchar (talk) 12:56, 25 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nice img of Shankhas. I don't know how I could not locate it on flickr inspite of my intense search. I have two more Hinduism related articles, one on Mattu Pongal at User:Nvvchar/Sandbox 1 scheduled to be held on 15th Januray 2010 for special occassion posting and the other on Paduka at User:Nvvchar/Sandbox 5. I have not been able to find imgs of wooden footwear worn by saints (you may be able to find them). You may like to join me in expanding them.--Nvvchar (talk) 14:15, 26 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for all the observations. Jallikattu can be mentioned as a festival observed as part of Mattu Pongal but the day of its observance varies from place to place. It could be either on the eve or after the Mattu Pongal, and where it is observed as a three day festival it could be held concurrent with the Mattu Pongal. I will read all the sources you have added and I have also located some. I will enlarge the article with changes as required with due noting of your views. I will do it in the next three days. As regards, Paduka, I started it purely as a 'foot wear' article but after reading the very well researched article by Bata Shoe Company (they have some lovely images of foot wear and the Paduka wearing by Rama, and also Krishna tending to Radha's feet. How can we get them to wiki?), I altered it to include the worship of feet or Pada or Paduka of Hindu dieties, particularly the Gaya temple which is exclusive for religious Sri Vaashnavaites like me - the Vishnupada.Thanks.--Nvvchar (talk) 06:21, 27 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I will add a few more lines before 31st Dec. --Nvvchar (talk) 16:23, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I have completed my inputs. Left to you now to tell me when you are done so that I can move it to main space. I will work on Mattu Pongal from this evening.--Nvvchar (talk) 08:34, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Very good Hook for Ganesh Jayanti. I have now moved Mattu Pongal to main space. I think Jallikattu would be a good topic for the DYK hook. Please go ahead and nominate on DYK. As regards Paduka, let us wait for two days as I am trying to get some photos taken in a nearby temple of Shankaracharya wearing Padukas.--Nvvchar (talk) 14:05, 4 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Nominations galore! edit

Hi redtiger.

Well, I have at last thought that it is the right time. I have nominated the article 2003 Afro-Asian Games for Good Article assessment. If you are interested, you can go ahead and review the article as you see fit. Suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

Cheers! A belated Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year to you!

Munneswaram temple edit

Hi, long time no see :(, just now got some free time. I have updated this article, only thing left from me is more citations. Can you look over it before I nominate it for GA status. Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 06:44, 28 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks and done. Happy Gregorian new year to you :)))Taprobanus (talk) 03:41, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think these pics that we have on the article is good enough as the rest I am unable to determine which Ganesh it is as well as most of the others are pics of decorative panels. The temple is deliberately low key from outside as the priests don’t want to overly provoke the locals but inside it resembles more and more a Buddhist Devale (Sinhalese for Temple dedicated Buddhist deities) which is painted in bright colors with panels unlike a south Indian style Saivite temple. It is an adaptation to survive in a new environment. Similar to a Church in Egypt in Muslim neighborhood which looks non descript with no crosses and even a bell tower that resembles a minaret :))) even if it once was an imposing Cathedral when the neighborhood was wholly Coptic Taprobanus (talk) 13:35, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, you helped a lot, without you, it wouldnt have reached that level. Now I need to do the same for Koneswaram next after I am done with the rewrite of the Vedda lkangauge article. Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 20:31, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mattu Pongal edit

Wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year 2010. I have now completed my inputs to this article. You may like to see and add more or delete some paras. Let me know after you have finished so that I can move it to main space before posting on DYK as our joint article.--Nvvchar (talk) 15:22, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I have fixed the references. --Nvvchar (talk) 02:57, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
As suggested by you long time ago, I have now decided to get some of my artciles to get upgraded to GA status. I have now nominated Junagarh Fort for GA upgrade under Miscellenous. But the talk page is asking for sub topic which I have mentioned as History. But the error persists on the talk page. Can you pl check and rectify, and also tell me the correct procedure? This will enable me to post my other B cateogory artciles on GA. Thanks.--Nvvchar (talk) 06:14, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for making the change and also the tutorial on the referencing. Look forward to get some more tutorials on GA process. I will look into it and also try to imbibe the reference procedure in all my articles. I propose to post Pulicat Lake for GA. What would be the subsection for lakes?

By the way, I am collecting some info on Sri Chakra. Would it be a good article to expand?--Nvvchar (talk) 12:17, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for editing inputs. I have removed the text of Jain temple and also reference to Lakshi Narayan temple. I will go through your other suggestions as well. As regards Pulicat Lake, I have noted your views and will rewrite it soon before posting.--Nvvchar (talk) 13:19, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

GA Sweeps update edit

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 90% done with only 226 articles remain to be swept! As always, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. With over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 4 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. As an added incentive, if we complete over 100 articles reviewed this month, I will donate $100 to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps participants. I hope that this incentive will help to increase our motivation for completing Sweeps while supporting Wikipedia in the process. If you have any questions about reviews or Sweeps let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:15, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I will work on Sharabha now on one of my user pages, eventhough there is a running fued on the issue between Vaisnavites and Shaivites (lingayats of Karnatka in particular).--Nvvchar (talk) 07:39, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree. If more material is available on Sharabha it should be reflected in an encyclopedic article. I will also pitch in, as time permits. "OK. What are you currently working on" -- I am working on goddess Varahi, ( wikipedia lacks an article on this ). I am working in my User:TheMandarin/Sandbox, but this is still in very initial stages, without much useful information...but there is enough information out there to create a respectable article. Request you to make some additions as and when you get time. Deogarh edit

Thanks for the nomination. I have completed my first draft on Sharabha at User:Nvvchar/Sandbox 5. I need to add some more text from Dvaita arguments. I may be tempted to be biased in parphrasing it. Hence, I would request you to add it under the Bigotry section suitably. I hope you like the way I have tried to bring out a balanced view. Feel free to edit.--Nvvchar (talk) 09:11, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sindhi community is comparatively very small than the Konkani community that is prevalent in Goa,Karnataka, Maharashtra,Kerala and abroad. If sindhi cheti chand appears there then why should not Samvatsar padvo? It represents the whole of 3.8 million people in India...is this some kind of personal grudge? no offence meant!

Svarbhānu edit

Hi Redtigerxyz. You recently assessed Svarbhānu as mid importance. Another editor put prod on it as he found the article incomprehensible to a lay reader. I am inclined to agree with his complaint but, as you clearly know about this subject area and think the article is of some importance, I have decided to deprod it. Perhaps you can add a couple of sentences to the article providing the context required so that us lay readers can get some idea of what it is about? It might help avoid an AfD. --DanielRigal (talk) 23:47, 16 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sharabha warning edit

Footnote 28 referring to dvaita.org may be a dangerous site for your computer, according to Google. Google suspects that is a suspicious site; Norton thinks it is clean.

I had referred to that site in the past when Google identified it as clean. So I edited the footnote with that caveat.

  1. ^ "Section on "The argument between Sri Vijayîndra Tîrtha and Lingaraja". http://www.dvaita.org/scholars/vijayindra/Vijayiindra_T_2.html. Retrieved 2010-01-10. (site may harm your computer)

Raj2004 (talk) 21:43, 20 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please see the above user's views (in response to my comment on his talk page), on my talk page on the issue of reliability of the sources. His views are conflicting. If it is suspect then the text would need change. or his warning in the artcile should be deleted.--Nvvchar (talk) 23:06, 20 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Redtiger The warnings are not conflicting but different. Google identifies the dvaita.org site as potentially malicious; my Norton software gives the site an okay. Nevertheless, I want to warn potential site viewers, as Google and Norton give opposite views of the site.

Raj2004 (talk) 00:53, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK. You are the lead. I have also expressed a view in my talk page on Sri Vaishnava interpretation of Vishnu sahasranama. Since User:Raj2004 wishes to manitain his ideology (I have no problem about it), the Vaishnava commentary/interpretation of the Sahasranama should also be suitably reflected, after the Shankaracharya's version. I leave it to you to do the needful. Also, please consider transferring some part of the text related to this controversy from the Trimurti article also since that article has gone through the "Due Process".--Nvvchar (talk) 05:15, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Please see my note on talk page of User:Raj2004 on this issue. The first observation is that the Dvaita web reference has also been used in the Trimurti article. The second view is on Shankaracharya's opinion on Sharabha as quoted on Sahasranama and my reference linked to a Srivaishnava commentary is to supplement it with the Srivaishanva view. The text to be trasferred from Trimurthi is given below--Nvvchar (talk) 05:34, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
"For example, the Dvaita school holds Vishnu alone to be the supreme God, with Shiva subordinate, and interprets the Puranas differently. For example, Vijayindra Tîrtha, a Dvaita scholar interprets the 18 puranas differently. He interprets that the Vaishnavite puranas as satvic and Shaivite puranas as tamasic and that only satvic puranas are considered to be authoritative.[1]"

Nvvchar is incorrect. I have no preference for idealogy. Please add the Srivaishnavite interpretation of Vishnu sahasrnama. Thanks, Raj2004 (talk) 12:16, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the remarks. The addition to his site was an accident. Raj2004 (talk) 12:20, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Incidentally, I am expanding an article on Pushkar Lake (see darft at User:Nvvchar/Sandbox 3) at the suggestion of Dr. Bloefeld. I have come across conflicting legends related to Brahma. One legend states that Sarasvati (her temple as also her idol next to Brahma in the temple exist) was his consort (wiki article also supports this view) and another reference says that Savithri was his consort and her temple is also seen in Pushkar. Sarasvati temple is also there. Both are reliable book references (already referenced under Legend section in my draft). Will you please let me know as to what do in this situation? You are welcome to join me in expanding this article.--Nvvchar (talk) 03:45, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Let us do it. Whatever you feel as WP:Undue, delete it since we now intend to expand Brahma Temple also. I will post a note on Dr Bloefeld's page. OK. Thanks. I checked the ch in the original Brahma temple at Pushkar article with our expanded one. It falls short by about 280 ch for 5x (1375 with spaces in the original to our 6586). Thanks for the nomination. I was thinking of writing an article on popular caves in Maharashtra where Vithoba was well known
I was thinking of Junnar Caves in Junnar.--Nvvchar (talk) 05:58, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Except for Elephanta Caves, which is already a fairly large article, others are worth expanding. For Junnar Caves, the original img has to be restored since the image posted in the article on Junnar is not clear. I will start, one at a time, after I return from my tour.--Nvvchar (talk) 13:03, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK. I will be back on 7th Feb.--Nvvchar (talk) 13:20, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. You have done an excellent job too. Would it be alright to use the second para of the lead for a hook?--Nvvchar (talk) 06:04, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I am reading it fully to remove any minor glitches and also to find suitable hook with reliable reference. Your suggestion could form this hook...that man-eating crocodiles used to be a menace in the Puskhar lake (pictured) in Rajasthan, India, resulting in deaths of pilgrims but many consider it lucky to be eaten by crocodiles? If you have some other formulation, pl let me know. I will give credit to Dr. Blofeld since he suggested this subject for expansion and also did some initial editing--Nvvchar (talk) 06:52, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Posted on DYK. You may like to add an alternative hook.--Nvvchar (talk) 08:44, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I added one final interpretation for Sharabha. Regards, Raj2004 (talk) 14:44, 30 January 2010 (UTC) Hi, Redtiger, why did you remove the Ramnuja web site? I used that site to find the full name of the scholar C. V. Radhakrishna Sastri, because his full name is not given in the site by Narasimhan Krishnamachari, who simply calls him Radhakrishna Sastri. Sastri had written a treatise with the various commentaries on Vishnu sahasranama in 1986, which is not mentioned in the current version. Thanks for your tips on nomination procedure. Gangadar edit

What is the meaning of Dar in Gangadar, a name ? Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 23:26, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

In Tamil, these Sanskrit terms and names become Gangatharan, Thamotharan, so looks like from Dhar (one who upholds) we get Thara(n) where n is masculine marker in Tamil, Malayalam and meadival Kannada. Now Tharan itself has become a name under further reduction, so I am trying to reach into its etymology to understand what could have been the original meaning in Sanskrit. Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 13:54, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Could it be 'Ganga' plus 'Dhara' forming "Gangadhar"?--Nvvchar (talk) 16:16, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
What is Dhara ? thx Taprobanus (talk) 18:27, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Dhara is a stream. The meaning of Sahsra Dhara is "thousand fold stream". --Nvvchar (talk) 05:45, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Gaṇgādhara (गंगाधर) is Shiva's name, used as a male name. Gaṇgādhāra (गंगाधारा) means a stream of the river Ganga, not used as a personal name.--Redtigerxyz Talk 12:14, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the intervention on the Junagarh Fort GA page. I retuned yesterday night itself and made some small editing. I am trying to find suitable primary sources to expand on the fort structure. I have not been successful so far. Can you suggest some? I have also shifted the access information to the Bikaner article. Any suggestions from you will be helpful. As regards the Junnar article, your suggestions are fine. We can expand all the articles individually, since Junnar as such does not have any caves. You know the lie of the land better than me. February GA Sweeps update edit

Progress as of January 2010

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 95% done with around 130 articles left to be swept! Currently there are over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 3 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. Per my message last month, although we did not review 100 articles last month, I still made a donation of $90 (we had 90 reviews completed/initiated) to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps reviewers. I would like to thank everyone's efforts for last month, and ask for additional effort this month so we can be finished. I know you have to be sick of seeing these updates (as well as Sweeps itself) by now, so please do consider reviewing a few articles if you haven't reviewed in a while. If you have any questions about reviews or Sweeps let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 02:44, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the praise. I would welcome working with you. I have encountered your burning red Tygertrail before in my wiki-wanderings. I am simultaneously working on a number of articles that are inter-related: charnel ground, Dattatreya, Avadhuta Gita and Avadhuta amongst others. I often work alone and generally in conflict, I would welcome the new experience of together. I would appreciate assistance with Avadhuta Gita principally, how is your Sanskrit and Devanagari?
Blessings in blood
B9 hummingbird hovering (talkcontribs) 13:32, 11 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Avadhuta Gita my friend is a text that has been significantly neglected by Western scholarship as far as I have been able to so far nail. Your assistance in textual analysis, identifying rhyming metre, dating text, iconography of Datta would be most welcome. Importantly, Datta as ghoul as aghori, is very important. Making it clear that aghori are avadhuta is VERY important. Are you Shaivite, Vaishnava, Smarta, Twice-born, nondual, Nath? BTW, did you notice my usage of GanpatiTibetan.jpg 'Danse Macabre' in charnel ground? Have you read Candi Sukuh?

Elephanta Island edit

I have started expanding this artcile. I did it partly today. I find that you have also started working on it. There is one gazette reference which gives large details of the Elephanta. Some of the text would need to be included suitably. I have added some part of it in the Geography (merged the topology section with it) and History sections but more needs to be done. It will take a few days to complete this articile if the text from the gazette reference is to be abridged suitably. I am glad to see that you have added the cropped version of the plan of the island (useful image to unerastand the lie of the main cave images). I tried but was not succesful so I reverted it to the original. I have also simultaneously started working on the caves. Did a bit on Lenyadri and also Junnar.--Nvvchar (talk) 15:08, 11 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have red your edits and addtions. PLease this flickr site [2] for free images. Since I have not seen the caves, I can't give names to the imgs. Hence I have not uploaded them. May be you can do it as a Mumbaikar. I will add text for the subsections from the gazette reference later in the evening. --Nvvchar (talk) 09:26, 12 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Can you identify the images with the subsections and post them for me to see if they fit in with the text since I am not able to relate the imgs as availabe, to the text. Thanks.--Nvvchar (talk) 14:16, 12 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey edit

I know you are busy and have your own projects but I would really appreciate a bit of your time. I just added a cite about Dattatreya being the adi-guru of the Aghori Sambhradaya on Wikipedia. I am working on the Avadhuta Gita on Wikisource principally at the moment and my Sanskritic grammatical knowledge and construction is god-awful. Do you know any easy reference tables online how I can work out declension of verbs and case-endings of nominal stems? My reading is really etymologically heavy and I need a stronger grounding in grammatical structure. Even if when you can be bothered just say such and such is Dative singular blah, blah and I should be able to work it out arse backwards. But with your assistance I can be sure in my analysis. Let me know if I may assist you some way in return as well. And if my English gloss of the Sanskrit is really an outrageous perversion of the original please whack me.
B9 hummingbird hovering (talkcontribs) 12:22, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikisource has difference rules. There is no significant textual analysis by any of the translators. Hence, why I would like to do it. I am also engaging it as an opportunity to deepen my knowledge of Sanskrit which is already word rich but grammatically poor. I will not ply my commentary on Wikisource back into Wikipedia either, that would be inappropriate. I just added charnel ground to the article you are working on. Please link her with it where you can. The charnel ground subsumes the cremation ground. I know it was a bit nordy to add charnel ground I just felt I would push it under your nose once again. The charnel ground is a fascinating place that cuts across traditions which is why I like spending time there.

GA Sweeps Completed! edit

Thanks to everyone's amazing efforts in February, we have reviewed all of the articles and are now finished with Sweeps! There are still about 30 articles currently on hold, and once those reviews are completed, I will send you a final message about Sweeps process stats including the total number of articles that were passed and failed. If you have one of these open reviews, be sure to update your count when the review is completed so I can compile the stats. You can except to receive your award for reviewing within the next week or two. Although the majority of the editors did not start Sweeps at the beginning in August 2007 (myself included), over 50 editors have all come together to complete a monumental task and improve many articles in the process. I commend you for sticking with this often challenging task and strengthening the integrity of the GA WikiProject as well as the GAs themselves. I invite you to take a break from reviewing (don't want you to burn out!) and then consider returning/starting to review GANs and/or contribute to GAR reviews. With your assistance, we can help bring the backlog down to a manageable level and help inspire more editors to improve articles to higher classes and consider reviewing themselves. Again, thank you for putting up with difficult reviews, unhappy editors, numerous spam messages from me, and taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Except for 10-13, the Handleman/Shulman key seems superior (better detail, the Sanskrit names), but it would be nice to know which one is correct for No.1. Anyone been to Elephanta in person? rudra (talk) 10:10, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you edit

Dear Tiger,

thank you so much for your kind prayer in response to hearing of my wife and I's sad loss.

It means a lot to me to hear this from you.

I am back editing again now, and hope to be able to support your excellent work again some time.

I return blessings to you on behalf of my wife and I,

What a happy coincidence! I was typing on your page, while you were typing on mine! :))
Yes, indeed, I will look again at Iravan. I remember I read a lot of the main source on the topic, and did some work at the lead. I never quite finished work though. Please expect me to chip away at the article over the next week.
Iravan is particularly fascinating for a gender theologian like myself, and a figure I'd not normally have the benefit of studying were it not for your work. So thank you very much for working on this article. :)
