1842

Hi, what's your source for 1842 (wrt Broadbottom Viaduct)? Biddle has it as 1845. Btw, I came across this NHLE entry, which is supposed to be about Broadbottom but the grid reference and description are about Dinting. I though you might find it useful if you wanted to expand the latter a bit. Also, some of the detail in the Broadbottom article might be useful in the Dinting article—the two seem to have quite an intertwined history. My source for 1842 is one I used in the Dinting article, [1], specifically the part that says "Broadbottom station had opened on 10/12/1842 and the contract for the Etherow viaduct immediately east of the station was let in early 1842 with construction commencing on 5th March of that year. The viaduct was opened to traffic on 24th December 1842, a fantastic achievement." (Emphasis added.)

Are you sure Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peter Murray (journalist) is suitable for non-admin closure, or a 'keep' decision? With one !vote for and one against, it's not clear at all. WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

The banner I rated there was for the Maritime transport task force, a subproject of Wikiproject Transport. This banner was added by Haus in 2007. I'm not sure of the connection. You can remove it if you want to.

• You can now use more editing tools for tables in VisualEditor. You can add rows and columns, merge cells, and edit table captions. [7] [8]
• The style and insert menus in the toolbar of VisualEditor now show fewer tools. This helps you see the most common tasks. You can see all items by clicking "More". [9]
• The way windows inside VisualEditor work has changed. VisualEditor should be faster and have fewer bugs. [10]

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Rcsprinter123/Archives. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

• There was a problem when editing tables in VisualEditor. VisualEditor was trying to fix bad values for the colspan or rowspan option. VisualEditor now leaves the bad values to avoid making things worse. This was fixed on November 17. [14]

WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

• We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
• In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
• The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

Cartography and copyright

Hi there fellow cartographer. So, I was looking at one of the maps you made and I noticed that you did not provide attribution for your data layers. Where did they come from and what is the copyright status of them? --Guerillero | My Talk 20:19, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Guerillero: Those maps are sourced from U.S. Census Bureau data, which as a work of the U.S. federal government, is in the public domain. This means I can use it to make other graphics from, and upload them on Commons. I should get round to adding a source, but that isn't a requirement especially as none of the original map appears in the image. Rcsprinter₁₂₃ (discuss) @ 20:53, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

While legally that is true, the best practice is to cite your sources. This is because there is creativity in the data itself. WP:Co-op

Hey Rcsprinter (admission of shame: After reviewing your userpage, I have been pronouncing your name wrong this whole time...so sorry!) I wanted to ask if you might be interested in mentoring one or more editors during our pilot of the mentorship space called the Co-op. We plan to run the pilot in late January for about one month. The idea is that mentors will be doing one-on-one teaching based on how an editor wants to contribute, and it's not some huge commitment to teach/learn comprehensively about Wikipedia. We also want to make to easier for new editors to find mentors as well. Your experience adopting editors already will definitely be useful for new editors just getting started. Is there any way that entry in b-log can be redacted ? We will have clueless folks in any future rfas too, and that entry will always be creating an unfair disadvantage for you. Block logs can be redacted, it is very rarely done - only in extreme circumstances. In this situation, hiding the past is not best solution - because there will always be people who are able to see what is hidden and will ask more questions. Better would be for Rcsprinter to be open that he made a mistake and be upfront about it in the next RfA. Remember Wikipedia favours transparency. Worm^TT(talk) 08:40, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Pardon me for not being very clear. I don't want that his whole block log be redacted. I only want one block, which was undone saying that that block should not be held against him. People still seemed to be holding it against him, voting on that basis, and questioning him on that again. He has been found innocent for that. And it is obvious that even though innocent, some folks will continue to vote against him despite him being innocent because the voter did not bother to read the unclock rationale, and apparently caused an irreversible pile-on. Indeed. I remember leaping into action at the time. I too wouldn't say innocent, but nor would I say guilty. I'd say he made a mistake - there's no crime in that, but accepting your mistakes and learning from them is a great asset to have. Hiding them away is not. I am not familiar with the incident. I had interpreted "should not be held against" as "innocent". However, if it was a "mistake" without being "innocent" or "guilty" either, I can understand why the entry should remain. However, I still remain with a feeling that it will create more than a due disadvantage because the nature of the block message is such that many people will not bother reading the unblock message. So, it is either a choice between having more disadvantage than is due, or creating more advantage than is due. I am in a quandary about which is more proper, and will leave it at this. WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. I could use a hand with some edit warning going on with the Trash Bag Bunch article. You closed the AFD on this Nov 22 as redirect. The article's creator has reverted that edit twice restoring the article claiming that concensus was to keep. I've restored your redirect twice but this editor (the article's creator) insists otherwise. • You can download the new version of the Wikipedia app for Android. The new version shows lead images, better galleries and content from Wikidata. It also has many other new features.[56] [57]
• Programs and bots still can't read information about images on many wikis. You can see the list of wikis with the most files to fix. Wikipedia in Italian, Indonesian and Japanese language have the most files to fix. On the biggest wikis you should use bots. Bots can add information templates to groups of files. You can ask other tech users to help you.

Problems

• All JavaScript on Commons was broken for a few minutes on Tuesday. It was because of old code in the HotCat tool. The same problem happened on some Wikipedias on Wednesday. It is now fixed. [58]

• The "Save page" button in the VisualEditor toolbar is now blue rather than green. This is the same as on the mobile site. [65]
• You can now edit pages on the draft namespace with VisualEditor on the Russian Wikipedia and Hebrew Wikipedia. You can ask to get VisualEditor for a namespace on your wiki. When your community agrees, ask in Phabricator. [66] [67]

the contacted persons seemed a bit lame on connecting with anyone else. I would have put a very different approach to what they have put up. The project was calling out for itself after user Good Ol'Factory created a vast sea of categories relating to death - he being one of the the front of the page is all you worry about people - - the death project was begging to happen. So inasmuch as anyone ever might say they create a project - the 'cause' was not adequately explained or acknowledged - the category and front of page people up there in 300k edits range may have created front space, but few if any ever go anywhere near the talk pages for project tags. So there is much more to the project than the 3 interviewed said. So be it. Also User:Pollinosisss should have been acknowledged as the death portal main editor satusuro 04:06, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Satusuro: It's unfortunate that more people did not offer their opinion to the report, but I had to publish with what I had. As a member of the wikiproject, you were welcome to contribute also. nah on closer inspection of my watchlist - I am at fault, my very very sincerest apologies - it (my watchlist) is simply too large - I missed your message at the project talk page ... sorry about that - also it is good as a report. I was being far too critical. What is good is that geniac acknowledged polinossis and good oldfactory, after my comment at the report page inside signpost. The actual scope development and refinement is something the project needs to re-examine down the line, and really, I am being far too over optimistic about what a report can do. • All sites were broken for 30 minutes on February 5. It was due to a network problem. [71]

Software changes this week

• The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 5. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 10. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 11 (calendar).
• You can have one user page for all wikis. Your Meta user page will show if you don't have a user page on a wiki. You can test this tool on test wikis. [72] [73] [74]
• You can search for media files in VisualEditor more easily. Images are bigger and you see the size and license. [75] [76]
• It is easier to review your changes when you save the page in VisualEditor. The window is wider. [77]
• You can read the latest news about VisualEditor. You can now join weekly meetings with developers. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The first meeting is on February 11 at 20:00 (UTC).

Future changes

• Administrators will soon be able to delete change tags used fewer than 5,000 times. [78]
• In the future you will be able to have personal lists of articles on the mobile site. [79]

Maps

Sbmeirow: The map for Meade County, which contains Plains, had already been made but for some reason, Plains had not been highlighted and uploaded in its own file. I have done this and added it to the article.

As for Parkerfield, I'm not sure, but it doesn't appear on the maps for the county so I can only guess that they used 2000 census data, and did not include Parkerfield which was incorporated in 2004. Wow, thanks a lot!!! I've been looking for a fix for multiple cities in Kansas. Back when the 2010 census was released, I went through every city article for Kansas and cleaned them up, and I noticed at that time some of the maps were missing. I seem to remember at least one more city in northeast Kansas that is missing a map, I but I couldn't find it when I originally asked you this question. By the way, do nice maps exist for unincorporated communities, like Aulne, Kansas? I've been wondering if there was a solution to fix these types of articles. Sbmeirow: The maps that were made before I began doing them do not include unincorporated areas, although I don't know why - illustrators' preference. Although it would be possible for me to update them all, it would be a huge task, simply because of the sheer number of counties already covered. So, unless there are some particularly notable CDPs, whose counties could be done, it would probably be best to leave updating the thousands of maps. I don't think it would be possible for you to create them either, because the method of creation is complex and highly controlled.

When you remember what the northeast Kansas city is, I would be happy to do any updating, as well as maps for whole counties that haven't been done yet (states OK, TX, NY, PA, MA, ME, NC, SC, VA, WV, KY, OH, LA, VT, NH, TN), on request. Ottawa County, Oklahoma, including the following former mining towns for historical reasons Picher, Oklahoma and Cardin, Oklahoma. Tahlequah, Oklahoma - ugly map, college town, county seat. I chose not to make Payne County maps for Mulhall and Orlando because those settlements are mostly in the county to the west, so they will appear in that county's maps when I do them. I can set it back in other states, but I've been working on changing all cities in Kansas over to "Location within XYZ County and Kansas" and plan to stick to it, for 3 reasons: 1) to prevent wrapping to a 2nd line. 2) redundant information, because its listed as a state a few lines below. I leave the word "county" since those names are far less common than state names. 3) Americans commonly does not talk nor write "the state of" before the state name. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 14:20, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
