Hi Professor Penguino! I noticed that you have reverted to restore your preferred version of Aaron Maté several times. The impulse to undo an edit you disagree with is understandable, but I wanted to make sure you're aware that the edit warring policy disallows repeated reversions even if they are justifiable.

All editors are expected to discuss content disputes on article talk pages to try to reach consensus. If you are unable to agree at Talk:Aaron Maté, please use one of the dispute resolution options to seek input from others. Using this approach instead of reverting can help you avoid getting drawn into an edit war. Thank you. Kleinpecan (talk) 01:14, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Kleinpecan. Thank you for taking the time to write to me. The article was biased and unfair to Aaron Mate. I was in no way trying to start an edit war. This is actually the first time I have edited or even attempted to edit the Aaron Mate page. It is important for Wikipedia to be objective, fair, and balanced--and back up claims with objectively proven facts and citations. If I have time, I will bring it up on the Talk Page.
Sincerely, Fellow Wikipedian, Professor Penguino (talk) 01:34, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that the phrase award-winning is puffery. His awards are already listed in the article. Kleinpecan (talk) 01:38, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
With all due respect, then why is "fringe" included in the introduction? The word "fringe" is very prejudicial. Whereas "award-winning" is just a simple fact--not puffery--to balance out the negative biased word "fringe." Professor Penguino (talk) 01:45, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia defines Puffery as, "exaggerated or false praise." To say that Aaron Mate is an "award winning Canadian journalist" is neither false, nor exaggerated. It is simply a fact. Professor Penguino (talk) 01:52, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
As per MOS:PUFFERY, those are "words [that] are often used without attribution to promote the subject of an article, while neither imparting nor plainly summarizing verifiable information".
As per WP:NPOV, Wikipedia articles should represent "fairly, proportionately, and, as far as possible, without editorial bias, all the significant views that have been published by reliable sources on a topic." If reliable sources are primarily negative, so will be the Wikipedia article. There is no requirement to engage in false balance and balance articles out. Kleinpecan (talk) 02:17, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
1.) The fact that Mate is "award-winning" *is* attributed--I included a citation. Indeed, it is indisputable. 2.) It is not in fact "puffery" because it is easily verifiable that he won the Izzy Award. 3.) By your own logic, you are inconsistent as other journalists are referred to as "award-winning" and you have no problem using the word "fringe," which is a negative prejudicial put-down. 4.) In any case, I propose as a compromise that Wikipedia move the fact that Mate won the IZZY Award from the first sentence of the introduction to the last sentence of the intro. You can look up many award-winning journalists on Wikipedia--the fact that they won awards is always prominently featured in the first introductory paragraph, often in the last sentence of the introduction. Professor Penguino (talk) 03:49, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Again, I really appreciate your feedback. I love Wikipedia. Professor Penguino (talk) 01:46, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I'm EchidnaLives. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, but you didn't provide a source. I’ve removed it for now, but if you’d like to include a citation to a reliable source and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. echidnaLives (talk) 01:17, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, EchidnaLives. The quote is as cited in Joy Hakim's 2005 book The First Americans: Prehistory - 1600 Chapter 22, Page 110. I was actually in the midst of writing a citation when my edits were suddenly reverted before I had a chance to add the citation. Professor Penguino (talk) 01:42, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Pax Wikipedian

Excuse me, do you know Pax Wikipedian, a user who edited your userpage and you seemed completely fine with that? — Nythar (💬-🎃) 02:20, 15 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I do. Why do you ask? Professor Penguino (talk) 02:23, 15 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Why not ask? Some people like to join Wikipedia in small groups to work on certain projects, but I find it a bit strange when multiple accounts edit with the behavior of experienced users. Graham87 was also somewhat confused by this, as can be seen here: User talk:Pax Wikipedian#Blocked. — Nythar (💬-🎃) 02:27, 15 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Spacing

Hello, and thanks for your contributions. Although I admire your enthusiasm, please don't edit articles just to remove spaces from line ends or to turn double spaces into single ones. Double spacing is one valid way to separate sentences, and is the norm in some countries such as the UK. Changing the spacing has no effect on the displayed page, and simply clutters the edit history. Wikipedia has many more important errors to be fixed. Thanks again, Certes (talk) 09:18, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Bolivia and ANI

Twinkle, not to be confused with Twinkie

Hey, thanks for noticing the issue on the Bolivia article. You're right, Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents is the wrong place to post about that (usually). A more appropriate forum is WP:TEAHOUSE, where there's almost always someone willing to help. However, a nifty trick to help fix the issue yourself is to enable Twinkle. Twinkle actually has a function that allows you to find a stable prior version of an article and restore that version in a single click (as I did on Bolivia). Again, thanks for noticing the issue and don't feel like you did something wrong by posting to ANI; just the wrong spot! ~ Pbritti (talk) 00:33, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Pbritti! Thank you for fixing the Bolivia page! Next time I'll go to the Teahouse for help. I'll definitely try installing Twinkle. Sincerely, Fellow Wikipedian, Professor Penguino (talk) 02:06, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Gubble

hi, on what basis did you re-revert my edit of Gubble just now? I replaced an incorrect developer credit for the PlayStation version (crediting the US publisher of the game as the developer) with one referenced to GDRI which is a well-regarded source among game historians, had it reverted by a bot in what appeared to be a false positive, and as per the message left by the bot on my talk page, I reported the false positive and redid the edit only to find it reverted again by you with no explanation 81.101.170.185 (talk) 21:06, 19 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

The revert was actually an accident, so I am sorry about that. I have just reverted my revert, so your revision is now in place again. Regards, Professor Penguino (talk) 21:28, 19 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism? No. I reverted to the last stable revision and fixed a citation. Since the 1RR is in place on the article, I'm going to let this go. But vandalism is serious. I spend half of my time on Wikipedia reverting vandalism. Try not to accuse good-faith editors of being vandals next time.

+rollback

Hi Professor Penguino,

After reviewing your request, I have added your account to the rollback group. Keep in mind these things when using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Users should be informed (or warned) after their edits have been reverted. If warnings repeatedly don't help, WP:ANI is the default place to go. In cases of very clear ongoing intentional damage to the encyclopedia, WP:AIV can be used.
  • Reverting someone's edits may confuse or upset them. Whenever other users message you on your talk page, please take the time to respond to their concerns; accountability is important. For most users who message you, the tone and quality of your answer will permanently influence their opinion about Wikipedia in general.
  • Because the plain default rollback link does not provide any explanatory edit summary, it must not be used to revert good faith contributions, even if these contributions are disruptive. Take the time to write a proper summary whenever you're dealing with a lack of neutrality or verifiability; a short explanation like "[[WP:NPOV|not neutral]]" or "[[WP:INTREF|Please provide a citation]]" is helpful.
  • Rollback may never be used to edit war, which you'll notice to be surprisingly tempting in genuine content disputes. Please especially keep the three-revert rule in mind. If you see others edit warring, please file a report at WP:ANEW. The most helpful essay I've ever seen is WP:DISCFAIL; it is especially important for those who review content regularly.
  • If you encounter private information or threats of physical harm during your patrols, please quickly use Special:EmailUser/Oversight or Special:EmailUser/Emergency; ideally bookmark these pages now. See WP:OS and WP:EMERGENCY for details. If you're regularly patrolling recent changes, you will need both contacts sooner or later, and you'll be happy about the bookmarks.

To try rollback for the first time, you may like to make an edit to WP:Sandbox, and another one, and another one, and then revert the row with one click. I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about rollback. Thank you for your time and work in cleaning up Wikipedia. Happy editing!

Best regards,

Drafts

Hi Professor Penguino. Just a head up that there's no requirement to use draftspace for confirmed editors without a COI. Please try to avoid implying otherwise. – Joe (talk) 07:24, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

I didn’t imply it was required. I didn’t move the editor’s article back to draft space or something like that. If I am not mistaken, it is preferring if editors start a draft before creating a stub article. It was simply because the article was pretty much a stub that hadn’t gone through the process of review. That’s all.
Have a good one. Professor Penguino (talk) 20:42, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

You recently added this image to the Jayne Mansfield article. Please be aware that per WP:NFCC #10c, every use of a non-free image such as this one must have a valid rationale. Also be aware that per WP:NFC#UUI #6, the use of a non-free image outside of a dedicated article about that image is generally not permitted. This image has a dedicated article at Jayne Mansfield–Sophia Loren photo and thus no valid rationale can be created for its use on the Jayne Mansfield article. Niña move

Have you considered WP:PRIMARYTOPIC? Generally, when replacing a primary article with a disambiguation page, you should discuss this on the primary's talk page, first. That would involve discussing whether any article in the disambiguation alternatives even approaches the use count of the primary, and whether there was any potential for confusion. Tarl N. (discuss) 08:07, 11 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to revert my change if you think it might have caused confusion. Professor Penguino (talk) 10:36, 11 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I didn't take action, it appears several other people took exception and it was undone. The reason I suggest page moves be done very cautiously, and only after discussion, is because they cannot be easily reverted. Only admins are capable of undoing this kind of move. You can move to an unoccupied page, but in doing so you leave behind a redirect, which cannot be overriden without advanced permissions. As it happens, I saw discussion that one problem caused by your move was the it created 70-odd disambiguation links (links within other pages which suddenly ended up pointing to a disambiguation page rather than the desired target). These links would have all had to be fixed. Regards, Tarl N. (discuss) 05:51, 13 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yikes. I definitely will have to read up more on page moves, and how to prevent that from happening again... it's good that someone reverted it and cleaned up the mess I made. Sorry for any trouble I caused.

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in The War of the Worlds, disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Specifically, please look at MOS:POSS as Wikipedia uses 's for words and proper nouns ending in s, which can be confusing. Thank you. i2n2z 03:40, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

New page reviewer granted

Hi Professor Penguino. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
  • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 16:45, 9 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Your draft article, Draft:1777 in Russia

Hello, Professor Penguino. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, "1777 in Russia".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! Changeworld1984 (talk) 11:34, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

February 2024

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Banderite. This means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be although other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. In addition, I don't think that your way of communicating on the talk page and via edit summaries matches WP's collaborative spirit. Rsk6400 (talk) 15:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

"I don't think that your way of communicating on the talk page and via edit summaries matches WP's collaborative spirit." Would you mind telling me exactly how? Professor Penguino (talk) 01:06, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
For your edit summary, I already explained myself[1] on the respective talk page. For your way of communicating on the talk page, I was primarily referring to this post[2]. If somebody makes fun of another person's concerns ("Lol", "the world is flat"), that is often a sign that they just didn't understand where the problem is. Rsk6400 (talk) 08:51, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
You're misrepresenting the situation. I'll make a few points:
1. I used "Lol" just because I thought it was funny that you were using a flawed argument. That's it. You have not actually shown why my revision was a violation of WP:DUE - all I did was insert a fact acknowledged by multiple reliable sources.
2. The way you quoted it here is misleading, as it seems like I said "the world is flat" sarcastically. I did not. I compared your argument (that because some people see Bandera as a hero, we cannot put the "ultranationalist" qualifier next to his name) to the argument that Wikipedia cannot clarify the Earth as a planet because some people think it's flat.
3. You ignored the fact that I put two reliable sources next to the addition. Read WP:FALSEBALANCE if you haven't already.
Sincerely, Professor Penguino (talk) 20:41, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
You didn't understand my argument. Being a teacher of physics (and history) I can't resist explaining to you that the question of the Earth being flat and being a planet are different questions: During the European Middle Ages, many educated people knew that the Earth was not flat, but they couldn't believe that it was a planet before Copernicus, Galilei, Kepler, and Newton. Rsk6400 (talk) 08:06, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's interesting. So, what was your argument, if I supposedly misunderstood it? Professor Penguino (talk) 08:11, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to Eastern Europe or the Balkans, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Professor Penguino,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
