WikiCup 2019 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

• L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
• Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
• MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
• Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
• Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
• Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

As this company probably is not notable enough for its own article (I found only passing mentions in CBM related magazines) I redirected the article you proded to their best known product (BASIC 8). Although target article is in a horrible state (no RS refs), it shouldn´t be a problem to establish notability (plenty of reviews in various magazines of the late 80s). Please don't do spurious nomination of articles

GNG vs NORG

I'm a newcomer to the AfD process, and I'm trying to get a better understanding of how the community assesses the notability of organizations and companies. In your !vote at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/World Famous Kenton Club, you said that the bar fails WP:NORG because it has only received coverage in local sources. I'm curious: would you vote the same way if WP:AUD was not in the picture and you were only assessing the article for general notability? The articles from Portland Tribune ([1]) and Portland Mercury ([2]) discuss the bar directly and in detail; the Willamette Week source is arguably significant coverage as well ([3]). These are all reliable sources, in my opinion. Do you think they're enough to pass the regular GNG requirements? Lord Bolingbroke (talk) 23:04, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Zenodo links

Users on Talk:Zenodo pointed out that it's difficult to edit the article due to the blacklist. Is it time to revisit the decision and if so could you file a request to that purpose? Whatever "emergency" there was back then has since expired: in particular, I'm currently barred from adding links to zenodo.org (and I'm sorry that other users are harmed, but I may be considered involved).

By the way, I suspect that some decisions made in November would have been different without certain misleading information provided by two very active and now-disgraced users (who were acting in good faith but were seemingly in the midst of a moral panic). Nemo 16:34, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

I saw the notice on my talk page, and I agree about splitting things up here, and I promise I won't draft things again if from an experienced editor. Though shouldn't the article be called Polanie (video game) instead of Polanie (computer game)? Hirohito/Hideki Tojo

I looked at the WW2 article and found it jarring to see Hirohito named alongside Hitler and Mussolini as Axis wartime leaders. I noticed you had commented on this in a talk page discussion. Do you think it is worth arguing the point to replace Hirohito with Hideki Tojo in the infobox as wartime leader. As you remarked on the talk page in 2018 the role of Hirohito is debated, he was useful for the military who really controlled Japan, as a figurehead and point of Nationalist and quasi religious devotion, but his war leadership was of a far different order to that of Hitler and Mussolini. Tojos role is unquestioned and was active, Hirohito was useful for the military but was he an instigator and active stoker of the fires of war as Hitler, Tojo, and Mussolini were? 78.147.45.52 (talk) 19:51, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

RE diff - responding here since it really is off-topic on that page - per - Knesset website - it was mainly supported by the opposition (running down the list of names - it seems almost all the opposition signed..... There is a backdrop here - Netanyahu was trying to minimize the whole Polish/Iraeli spat whereas the opposition (particularly Lapid) was trying to fan the flames) and has only been tabled (which means it went nowhere - Israeli MPs create thousands of bills - 6,644 bills, 5,756 queries: Was 20th Knesset a tale of quantity over quality?, TOI, April 2019 - most of them don't go anywhere - the bill is usually an excuse for a press-release and press-coverage - so there's bills on anything that is a media topic). Unlike the PR accompanying the bill - YNET (and the not very accurate quote above - it seems to be a summary of PR in the news but not of the bill) - the bill proposal itself is rather minute - it proposes to modify the existing 1986 Holocaust denial law by adding "by the Nazis and their helpers" (which per my legal reading of the law is redundant - as the existing 1986 lawrefers to any crime against humanity/Jewish nation during the Nazi period - it is already not limited to Nazis specifically and would apply per my legal reading to denial of any crime against humanity during Nazi rule) + adding legal aid to Holocaust survivors/educators/researchers that are accused in foreign courts in relation to their testimony regarding the Holocaust or Holocaust denial (so this portion is the main response to the Polish legislation). In short - so far it hasn't gone up for a vote (3-4 required to be a bill) and hasn't even been assigned to a committee. It probably will be "dead" in the new session (following the April 2019 election) - a "continuation motion" needs to be passed for it to be "alive", IIRC.Icewhiz (talk) 10:39, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Jacek Dukaj appears to have followed a couple of approaches alternative to translation stricto sensu (he himself calls his Polish rendering of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness a "Polonization" rather than a "translation"): his appears to be 1. an "adapted translation"; 2. a "modern translation" (a rendering into present-day language). Which is well and good (in all the arts, people have been adapting entire works of predecessors, or at least stealing motifs from them), so long as he in fact does not claim that his version is actually a "translation".

If my sense of the Polish language is accurate, Conrad's niece Aniela Zagórska was probably right in rendering the title "Heart of Darkness" paraphrastically as "Jądro ciemności" rather than metaphrastically ("literally") as "Serce ciemności". Conrad uses "heart" here in a geographical sense (the Congo lying roughly in the "heart" of Africa) as well as in a sense that is, I think, approximated by the Polish "sedno", as in "sedno sprawy" ("the heart of the matter").

Dukaj would like, as much as possible, to do away with words, to get at direct experience. This is attempted by films; but what film cannot do, generally, is present abstractions, which are a forte of written language.

On a different subject: I have a mnemonic for you: "though" ("choć") vs. "through" ("przez").

I trust you are picking up some of the local language and culture: an invaluable experience, as Poland was for me! This kind of exposure transforms a person into an inter-cultural with improved binocular vision—as it did Conrad.

In regards to "‎perhaps you meant to template yourself, have your own copy here, free of charge" - per Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Discretionary sanctions#Alerts - "Editors issuing alerts are expected to ensure that no editor receives more than one alert per area of conflict per year. Any editor who issues alerts disruptively may be sanctioned.". I was previously alerted, within the past 12 months, to both topic areas - 17 December 2018, 9 May 2018 - thus it would seem that you did not fulfill the requirements sent forth in the quoted section of AC/DS. BLP sourcing

You restored information on BLPs sourced to Canada Free Press - an "an online conservative tabloid." If you'll take a peek at RSN - it's been rather roundly rejected as a source at all. It definitely is not a source for BLP information. The removal clearly contained the edit summary - " Canada Free Press is not remotely a RS, definitely not for BLPs. Uncited information removed as well". I will also note that I returned some of this information (e.g. the Drew Carey show) cited to bona-fida RSes. CFP is not an acceptable source - it's an online tabloid - look at RSN. BLPs? Well Jimmy Kimmel, Drew Carey are BLPs. So is possibly Michael Preisler (absent evidence otherwise). non-reliable sources may not be used for any information on BLPs. The text you returned actually contained accusations of re-use "WWII-era Nazi propaganda" (it seems to me that the Polish cavalry charge was oft repeated outside of Nazi Germany - but regardless - you need a reasonable soruce for that). Not acceptable. Again - I strongly suggest you self revert and remove any source that is not BLP suitable. the phi966.org website of what seems to be a very small NGO called "The Polish Heritage Institute" whose main page currently has " May the Suffering and Death of Christ Lead Us All to Sanctity and Eternal Life" and a simple perusal of the site uncovers various, umm, questionable theories on the Holocaust, The Smolensk Crash, and other items - is clearly not an acceptable source for BLP. WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

• Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
• Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
• Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
• Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Barkeep49 with six GAs, Ceranthor, Lee Vilenski, and Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Hi, Piotrus. Am I mistaken, or do {{PD-Polish}} and Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Poland#Retroactive changes contradict each other? Specifically,

[A]ll photographs by Polish photographers (or published for the first time in Poland or simultaneously in Poland and abroad) published without a clear copyright notice before the law was changed on May 23, 1994 are assumed to be in the public domain in Poland.

Needle in a haystack?

I am highly doubtful that anyone can help me with this, but wondered if you might have suggestions. While writing the article on the Inter-Allied Women's Conference of 1919, I found a photograph which identifies one of the conference participants was Eva Mitzhouma of Poland. The name does not remotely seem Polish to me and numerous searches (Micjoma, Mitjoma, Mitthomma, Mitzuma, etc.) give no result. It would seem to me that, as the women invited to attend this conference were prominent suffragettes, that she would be easy to find. But, without a name??? In the photo, on the article page, she's the last woman on the right on the top row. Any ideas of who this might be or what an actual Polish equivalent for the name might be? RE - this - If you are rolling back stuff - please don't do this on a blanket revert basis - e.g. you reverted the Polish language equivalent of Lucky Jew (Polish: Żyd na szczęście"), + referencing changes/improvements in the lead. I think I probably agree with you on the POV of the lede (that it bears mentioning both offensive perception and non-offensive perception - sources do (though they tend to break out on ethnic lines - not sure I'm brave enough)). You made a mess with the "Accompanying proverbs" section. For starters everything that was added inmthe lede was already in the body - so now we have this twice. We do need to mention in the lead withnhas a proverb with it (maybe more briefly). Witam. Przed kilku laty napisałem na pl.wiki artykuł https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad%C5%BAapajoga . Kilka miesięcy temu zacząłem tłumaczyć go angielski i wczoraj uznałem, że można go już opublikować na en.wiki. Dzisiaj dostałem info, że artykuł został tu przeniesiony https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Ajapa_Yoga i czeka na weryfikację. Na pl.wiki nie ma problemu z publikacją moich artykułów, ale na en.wiki chyba jest bo jest to mój pierwszy artykuł tam. Z tego co tam piszą, to na publikację artykułu muszę poczekać nawet do 2 miesięcy. Chcę ciebie poprosić o weryfikację artykułu i przeniesienie go z draftu do głównej przestrzeni en.wiki. Ponieważ nie wiem, czy jak napisze w Drafcie, to będziesz widział mój wpis, to więc kopię tego piszę tutaj. Dziękuję za twoją odpowiedź. Wychodząc na przeciw twojej prośbie w sekcji 'European and North America countries wstawiłem dwa źródła, które dokładnie odnoszą się do poprzedzających je zdań. Kilka słów wyjaśnienia: Ajapa Joga do tego roku była nauką dość hermetyczną i trudno jest znaleźć materiały źródłowe do artykułu. W tym roku ta nauka otwiera się na świat i w Polsce, Norwegi-Oslo, Niemczech-Berlin, Węgry-Miszkolc-Budapeszt-Balatonfured, Słowacja-Bratysława, Austria-Wiedeń, Czechy-Praga odbędzie się cykl wykładów o Ajapa Yoga. Dlatego przetłumaczyłem ten artykuł i zależy mi na w miarę szybkim upublicznieniu go. Pisząc artykuł na Polskiej wiki, kontaktowałem się z obecną Czeska Akademią Nauk, ale po transformacji i podziale Czechosłowacji dużo archiwalnych materiałów im poginęło i nie można już ich odtworzyć. Wówczas (około 10 lat temu) gdy pisałem artykuł czerpałem z wiedzy osób (dziś już nieżyjących), które uczestniczyły w tych wydarzeniach. Myślę, że wkrótce ta cała wiedza o początkach Ajapa Yogi na Zachodzie zostanie zapomniana. Po przyjeździe do Czechosłowacji Guru Janardan mieszkał u dyrektora szpitala psychiatrycznego w Pradze. Piszę to wszystko, aby powiedzieć tobie, że mam te informacje, ale nie mogę ich umieścić, ponieważ nie ma do nich źródeł. Szkoda, bo zostaną zapomniane. Could you please advise?

When editing while using both an alphabet list (e.g. Latin, Greek, Cyrillic...) and the "insert" list (long and short hyphens...), I am irritated at having to be switching back and forth between the two symbol lists. I would like the "insert" list (or at least the two hyphen variants) to be included as a regular, integral part of each alphabet list.

I don't know where this proposal should be submitted. Could you please:

1. tell me where to do it; or

2. submit it for me; or

3. if you agree with the idea, submit it under your own name?

List of Kresy born Poles - declined

Hello Piotruś, may I presume on your precious time again? Having had a go at improving the Kresy article, I decided, stupidly as it turns out, to transfer the list of notable people, too long in my opinion, onto a separate page, with a redirect tag. Then I found it transferred into a draft space: Draft:List of Kresy born Poles, tagless for want of any sources. It had none to start with. So I spent hours finding 46 credible references and obeyed the instruction to submit it for review. Although it was dealt with quickly, it has been declined! So now, as suggested, I have left a background note in the Tea House. I am rapidly losing the will ... Can you suggest what to do please? Was I barking up the wrong tree again? Dunajec...

Thanks for pinging me about the Dunajec geological entity at Commons.

While I was researching the question, I lost your ping.

Commons has a page under "Dunajec Canyon".

Wikipedia has one under "Dunajec River Gorge".

Since the geological entity takes its name from that of the river, I would retain "river" in its name.

I incline toward "gorge", and anyway that is what appears in the Wikipedia name, rather than "canyon".

So, finally, I would call it the "Dunajec River Gorge" in the Commons, as it is in Wikipedia.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the above—and, also, how the decision turned out.

Currently I consider creating (actually preparing in sandbox and maybe later put to mainspace or draft) of new article linked above but I do not know what translation would be right into English. Currently we have articles on English Wikipedia like: Church of the Holy Virgin Mary The Queen of Poland, Słubice, Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish, Boston. What name you would chose for pl:Najświętsza Maryja Panna Królowa Polski? It should be based on reliabe sources for translation or analogy to other similar titles? Cheers. @Dawid2009: Redirects will do the trick in the end. I'd suggest checking what's the most common name used in Google Books and such. @Dawid2009: I haven't researched prior English renderings. If something more convincing is not found, I would suggest "The Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland". "Panna" is rendered unequivocally, in this context, by "Virgin". If one wants to be very complete (as well as redundant and longish), one could go with "The Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland".

This is currently wrote in tragic style and probably not quite understandable language but purly translated from version on Polish Wikipedia. Do you have time to help with copuyediting this page? This still require reworking and it also require adding technical things (sources, references, checking links, translation or few Polish sentences etc.). I could do that. But I also found another. I also found out that one of the co-founders was a railroad and newspaper tycoon responsible for the founding of Tavares, Florida, and another was involved in the Tavares, Orlando and Atlantic Railroad. WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 14

Updates: I've been focusing largely on the development side of things, so we are a lot closer now to being ready to actually start discussing deploying it and testing it out here.

There's just a few things left that need to be resolved:

• A bunch of language support issues in particular, plus some other release blockers, such as the fact that currently there's no good way to find any hubs people do create.
• We also probably need some proper documentation and examples up to even reference if we want a meaningful discussion. We have the extension documentation and some test projects, but we probably need a bit more. Also I need to be able to even find the test projects! How can I possibly write reports about this stuff if I can't find any of it?!

Some other stuff that's happened in the meantime:

• Midpoint report is out for this round of the project, if you want to read in too much detail about all the problems I've been running into.
• WikiProject Molecular Biology have successfully set up using the old module system that CollaborationKit is intended to replace (eventually), and it even seems to work, so go them. Based on the issues they ran into, it looks like the members signup thing on that system has some of the same problems as we've been unable to resolve in CK, though, which is... interesting. (Need to change the content model to the right thing for the formwizard config to take. Ugh, content models.)

Grabowski

Piotrus, you know that Grabowski's claims are controversial, so why are you presenting them in a way that suggest that the 200,000 number is undisputed. Here are just a couple example of this: Historian Shimon Redlich writing about the book in Slavic Review, criticized the book's structure, in particular the lengthy quotations and appendix, the careless "claim of 'hundreds of thousands' of Jews seeking shelter among the Polish populace", which according to Redlich cannot be extrapolated to the whole country based on one single area. or Historian Krystyna Samsonowska of the Jagiellonian University wrote in her review that Grabowski did not use all available sources, and "gave up" on actual field research; for example, by not trying to contact the families of Jewish survivors from Dąbrowa Tarnowska, or the Poles who hid them. Samsonowska argues that, by using broader resources, she could identify 90 Jews who had survived the war in hiding in Dąbrowa County, as opposed to the 38 cited by Grabowski. --E-960 (talk) 07:57, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Says- Passengers – Information about the number of passengers, fatalities, injuries and survivors. Information on the nationalities involved should be included. Optionally, notable passengers may be recorded but should be limited to individuals with a Wikipedia article. Information including ethnic or religious backgrounds and school affiliations should not be included.

@WilliamJE: Right, but in the end it's just an essay. We are not required to follow it if there are arguments against it, and as I said, given the controversy surrounding this, such as that one of the passengers might have been a spy or such, a full list of passengers should be present. It is policy on all the accident pages here. Has been for a long time. Maria Grzegorzewska

I have been working on an article on Józefa Joteyko which took me to the stub on Maria Grzegorzewska, clearly in need of work and the only ref link is dead. At any rate, searching for materials, I find tons, so am probably going to make her my next "victim" :), but was surprised we have no photos of her at all, only sculptures and a grave marker. Found this and this, but cannot figure out where they might have come from, making it impossible to determine first publication. Then I found this (images on pages 20 and 28), which indicate they were taken from this book. I don't have access to the book, but if indeed they were published in 1972 without a copyright notice, they would be usable. this also has images, but I don't understand the abbreviations used and cannot tell if they were published. @SusunW: My browser crashed in the middle of my reply. Yes,1972 book will qualify for commons:template:PD-Polish. As for the latter PDF, I am guessing that APAN refers to the archive of the Polish Academies of Sciences which would be abbreviated APAN ([10]). WikiCup 2019 July newsletter

The third round of the 2019 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round needed to score at least 68 points, which is substantially lower than last year's 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

• Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with 500 points derived mainly from a featured article and two GAs on natural history topics
• Adam Cuerden, with 480 points, a tally built on 16 featured pictures, the result of meticulous restoration work
• SounderBruce, a finalist in the last two years, with 306 points from a variety of submissions, mostly related to sport or the State of Washington
• Usernameunique, with 305 points derived from a featured article and two GAs on archaeology and related topics

Contestants managed 4 (5) featured articles, 4 featured lists, 18 featured pictures, 29 good articles, 50 DYK entries, 9 ITN entries, and 39 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Welcome back to the Editing newsletter.

Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.

Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

Recent releases

The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

1. Section editing
   • The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
   • The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
2. Loading overlay
   • The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.

New and active projects

This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

• Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
• Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
• Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
• Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

Looking ahead

• Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
• Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.

Hi just a quick reminder, unless I am very much mistaken you should not be adding categories that do not exist yet to articles as per MOS:CATORDER which states "An article should never be left with a non-existent (redlinked) category on it. Either the category should be created, or else the link should be removed or changed to a category that does exist." which is why I reverted your edit. polskie przysięgi wojskowe

Witaj

Jest w enwiki całe hasło Polish Army oaths (o czym wiesz na pewno doskonale, bo parę lat temu sam je kilkakrotnie edytowałeś), a w nim teksty przysiąg wojskowych w Polsce w różnych okresach historycznych (aczkolwiek bez źródeł), wraz z tłumaczeniami na angielski. Brakowało jednego ważnego, bo obowiązującego 36 lat tekstu wprowadzonego ustawą w 1952 roku. Dodałem go: Polish_Army_oaths#Polish_People's_Army_oath_(1952-1988), ale nie podejmuję się go przełożyć na angielski. Dlatego proszę Ciebie, byś to uzupełnił.

Dodatkowo zaopatrzyłem trzy teksty (z 1947, z 1952 i z 1992) w przypisy wskazujące linki do odpowiednich dzienników ustaw, żeby nie pozostawiać tego hasła kompletnie bez źródeł. Można to jeszcze uzupełnić, posiłkując się choćby polskimi Wikiźródłami, ale przyznam uczciwie, że o godzinie 3:20 nad ranem (czasu polskiego) już nie mam do tego siły...

Territorial evolution of Poland - map - errors in Memel/Klaipeda region

There is one problem that I noticed, which is not directly related to Poland, but is still relevant and can be easily fixed.

this is the error in the depiction of the "Memelgebiet". This region is shown as part of Germany (Weimar and Nazi) through WW II, but in fact, it was Allied administered after the Versailles Treaty (1919) and was then taken over by Lithuania in 1923, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaip%C4%97da_Revolt Then, in April 1939, the area was "returned to the Reich" after a Diktat by Nazi Germany, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1939_German_ultimatum_to_Lithuania Thus it remained during WW II, and in 1945, this area was annexed by the USSR along with the so-called "Kaliningrad Oblast". Looking for photos, I finally found a source for this one of Gralewski. According to the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum it was created in 1945, thus it would seem that from that date, their materials were "public". Obviously the photographer, unknown, was Polish, but my question would be does this fall under 1) official documents, materials, signs and symbols (so it was never protected) or 2) photograph with unknown author whose copyright expired after 50 years per 1994 law, i.e. 1945+50=1995 so before URAA date of 1 January 1996 and in the PD in both Poland and the US? Obviously, if it is usable, we can use it on his article as well as on Iwańska's. SusunW (talk) 15:26, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

It's the 3rd photo in the article and captioned "From the Archives of the Polish Institute and General Sikorski Museum in London, Archives Ref. No A.XII. 4/172 ..." I read your copyright page and now I am confused, even more. Obviously the passport photo was taken on or before 1943. Also, obviously it was put on public display in 1945, but that public display was in London, so is that analysis saying that 70 years applied even though Poland was not at that time part of the EU and the copyright expired in Poland before the 1996 URAA date? (I really do not like copyrights, they are almost purposely confusing). SusunW (talk) 13:50, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

@SusunW: Here's my honest take on this, speaking again as someone who devoted several hours, at least, trying to parse those convoluted laws and wrote the linked guide: upload the image using the tags I suggest on that page (picture by Polish photographer <1943). Let some crazy copyright paranoics bent on enforcing laws nobody does outside Wikipedia challenge this at some point, if ever. IF this ever happens (low chance), let them waste time presenting some convoluted rationale why this wouldn't be in the public domain. As you see, I am cautious (read: not typically very bold) ;), but I have followed your advice and uploaded the image. Almost as soon as I uploaded it PawełMM cropped out the passport logos. I kind of liked them being in it for Gralewski's article, but I used the cropped one in Iwańska's. If you want to change the image, it's fine with me. Proposed deletion of Octavian Saiu

Hello,

I received your message for proposed deletion of a page I created: Octavian_Saiu. Given the number of references on Google Scholar, as well as JSTOR, news, newspapers and general Google results, I believe Octavian Saiu meets the required criteria for notability. Saiu is recognised as the most important Romanian theatre critic and scholar of his generation. He is also one of the most significant cultural animators of the global theatrical scene, as chair and speaker at key events such as Sibiu International Theatre Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, Festival of Tokyo and many others. He has had a substantial impact outside academia in his academic capacity: through his books and multiple public talks, conferences and dialogues. If required, he may be presented as "public intelectual" and animator rather than "academic" or "theatre critic". Therefore, as requested, I have added new references regarding his rich activity in the Career section and various external links. Could you please advise on how to further improve the page? Also, I hope you agree that the proposed deletion template can now be removed.

WikiCup 2019 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Ciepielów massacre

Hello Piotrus. I have reverted some of your recent edits concerning the above referenced article, where you use the phrase "most infamous" repeatedly. Aside from being redundant, the phrase is subjective. While it may be attributable to the Institute for Remembrance and one Polish author (I can't tell, since I don't read Polish) it is both a superlative (which we try to avoid) and an opinion held out as fact. If we reduce the number of times this phrase is repeated (to address redundancy) and state that it is an opinion expressed by a specific source (rather than a universal fact), the article become more encyclopedic in nature. Your nomination Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/James Gordon Jr.

I believe your AfD is a serious violation of WP:BEFORE. Took a look at your edit activity. You PRODed one article [12] at 14:14. Then four minutes later took the article in question to AfD at 14:18, confidently stating "No hint of any impact, reception, influences, etc.". Again, four minutes later, you took yet another article WP: Articles for deletion/Matsuya (department store) to AfD at 14:22, which was rather quickly thrown out as an absolutely baseless nomination. Same with this one. You obviously didn't bother to test any of the fancy links your automated script offers, as a matter of routine WP:BEFORE.

Try for instance GScholar. I myself was pretty surprised that Google Scholar [13] offers peer reviewed articles on a figure from the Batman universe, for instance the International Journal of Organization Theory & Behavior [14]. Article(Dissolve Inc.) nominated for deletion appeal

Hi Piotrus, I'm the author of this article. I'm also pretty new to all of this so sorry if I broke any rules. Not sure if this is the correct way to reply to the nomination for deletion discussion.

I created this separate article, This is a Generic Brand video. It's not so much an advertisement, as it is an indictment of cliches used by advertisers. It's an indirect commentary on formulaic pandering. The video was the first of a trilogy, which went on to mock generic presidential campaign ads as well as stereotypical ads targeting millennials.

It's actually quite brilliant making fun of ads in an ad. It's a double entendre! I discovered these in one of my lectures and felt like these videos deserved to be documented. It's like these troupes describe the socially accepted values during this select moment in time.

Anyway so this article is about the company behind these clever videos. Cool brand. Other company's have wiki articles, shouldn't this be acceptable?

Regarding your notability concerns for Wallenstam

I removed your nomination for deletion, it's not surprising you don't know about Wallenstam, considering it's a mainly Gothenburg centered property owner. Just like I don't know any Polish property developers either. But as I wrote in my summary it's well known in several sectors in Sweden, partly as a landlord, partly as a large cap company. This isn't the first time someone have tried to delete the stub, it happened in 2016 as well. That being said, if you don't believe me, here are tons of news articles written about the company, courtesy of Google:

The list goes on, but I'm running out of newspapers that I can think of. Almost all articles are in Swedish, obviously. It's mainly about how the business is doing, new development projects, tenant controversies, court cases and the usual stuff.

With the current stock price the company is worth 34.5 billion SEK (US$3.5 billion, €3.2 billion) and despite being a primary source their website's about page paint an accurate picture about the size and scope of the company.

And if all that wasn't enough, the article on the Swedish language Wikipedia have been around since 2006 with absolutely no attempts at deletion for lack of notability. Really, if anyone would know if the company is notable or not it's the Swedes themselves.

Polish article

If you need a QPQ for DYK, you could consider reviewing my nomination of Sergiusz Toll. The article is somewhat experimental for me because all the sources are in Polish and I do not speak the language. The article is based on the Polish language Wikipedia article but is more of a summary than a translation. Google Translate is very good, but it is possible for misunderstandings to slip in. Polocaust

We need to get all the parties to calm down and focus on the academic publications of high quality. We should look for older, proven works, not cutting edge new ideas. My own understanding of events is that there were good Poles (resistance) and a few bad Poles (collaborators), as there are in all societies. There were Poles who were persecuted for resisting tyranny (political enemies). There were Poles who were persecuted for being Jewish, or Catholic, or gay. Surely many Holocaust victims were Polish citizens. We should avoid getting into the game called oppression Olympics. Jehochman ^Talk 17:23, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Thank you.", why don't you keep a personal PROD log to track changes to the PRODed articles (which is easy to do via "Related changes")? Hi Piotrus, hope you don't mind that I de-PRODed your Challenger, Gray & Christmas nomination while monitoring the WikiProject Companies page. As someone who lives in British Columbia has heard of this HR recruitment and outplacement firm, I tended to think it's potentially notable. There seems to be enough online sources for at least a stub-class article, but if you want to submit an AfD process, I wouldn't be opposed to that. I think it just deserves a full debate. Hi! On Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Futar you judged the article fails WP:NFICTION. As the nominator I agree the article should be deleted. I'm curious about the wikilink though.

I clicked on it, and it seems to be an essay about how there is no special notability guideline for fictional topics, all previous attempts to create one have failed, and that other notability guidelines (like the GNG) should be used instead. Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019

Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.

What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!

Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Edit Cards

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.

• On 3 September, the Editing team released version 3 of Edit Cards. Anyone could use the new version in the mobile visual editor.
• There is an updated design on the Edit Card for adding and modifying links. There is also a new, combined workflow for editing a link's display text and target.
• Feedback: You can try the new Edit Cards by opening the mobile visual editor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Edit cards talk page.

Toolbar

The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.

• In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
  • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
  • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
  • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
• Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead

• Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
• Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.
• Measuring the impact of Edit Cards: The Editing team hopes to share results in November. This study asks whether the project helped editors add links and citations. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: Edit Cards project page.

Proposed deletion of en:Z-mill

Dear Piotrus, thank you for your message about the proposed deletion. I have removed the deletion request for the following reasons: The Z-mill is definitely not a hoax. It is a very important machine used in steel production. But the critics on the English version of this articel is largely right. I have tried to add some information and to remove a couple of sentence. There is still more to do. You may also have a look to the German version of this article de:Sendzimir-Gerüst, which I think is more neutral.

WikiCup 2019 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year! Our Champion this year is Adam Cuerden (submissions), who over the course of the competition has amassed 91 featured pictures, including 32 in the final round. Our finalists this year were:

Awards will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!
