Renamed account troubles

Technical details, not really important any more

Usurped page needs splitting {{adminhelp}} This page, and the associated user page, need a history split. On 13 June, the previous "User:Pine" was renamed to "User:Pine (usurped) [2], and "User:GreenPine" was renamed to "User:Pine" [3]. At that time, this user talk page had just a single revision - the notification about the usurp [4]. However, after the rename, the "new" Pine copied over their talk page, here [5]. Hence, it needs splitting, and the bulk of it merging back to the rightful location at User talk:Pine. And, User talk:GreenPine needs merging into User talk:Pine. And, User talk:GreenPine should redirect to User talk:Pine And, this page - "User talk:Pine" - should end up with just the usurp request. Page creation in apparent violation of NOTPROMOTION

You wrote that article Infopulse Ukraine LLC appears to violate WP:NOTPROMOTION.

1. Could you explain what exact parts of article violates WP:NOTPROMOTION? I hope it will reduce amount of my work to correct it.

OK, I let's leave it in the article space for now if you're going to work on it briskly, but tag it with Template:Under Construction so that people know that the article needs work.

The basics of Wikipedia are that it is a "neutral compilation of verifiable, established facts," about notable subjects. For example, Microsoft is a notable company, but a single employee dog walking service probably isn't notable. In the article about Microsoft, mentioning that its CEO is Steve Ballmer is probably notable, but the name of Steve Ballmer's secretary probably isn't. When applying the same standards to your article, a company with 700 employees might be notable, but most of the sources that you cite seem to be trade publications or internal company publications that don't demonstrate that the company has any real significance beyond the fact that it exists in its market space, provides some B2B services to other companies, and has some history behind it. There's nothing in the article about notable contributions that the company has made in engineering or any other field other than its service to other companies.

So I would say that this article is borderline promotional in two ways, first because its demonstrated notability is so low that the mere existence of the page suggests that its main purpose is public relations rather than informing the reader of anything truly noteworthy for the general public, and second because the article's tone is generally complimentary, even going so far as to mention the employee training center and corporate giving programs which are absolutely not notable but do give good PR to the company, thus violating WP:NOTPROMOTION by their inclusion. I think that you could turn this into an acceptable article but I would start by deleting the sections about the employee training center and corporate giving programs, then working on improving the notability of the article by including more significant facts beyond than the company's support relationships to other companies and the company's employee headcount. See WP:NOTABILITY for more information about what is considered notable. At this point, the article probably fails the Notability standards for inclusion in Wikipedia, as well as having problems with NOTPROMOTION, but you might be able to fix both and I'll be happy to advise. Writing Styles of Female Editors on Wikipedia

:D I'm going to see the Caps play tonight, so I won't be available on IRC. I didn't add any additional information of substance to the article between last night and tonight. I did run a spell check on the document, and corrected a few obvious errors. The table that compares Female created articles v Male created articles is in a footnote, starting on line 401. The methodology was as follows: I got a list of articles I created (about 495) and a list of articles Hawkeye7 created (about 46) and checked the formal gender coding of my articles vs Hawkeye7's articles. I did a very basic analysis, consisting of the following table:

This was it. It supports the idea that there is no fundamental difference between male user/male identified and female user/female identified articles on the main space. The sample size of male and female users is limited to one each. These articles have likely been edited by many other users of both genders. The small sample size is why this information was put as a footnote instead of in its own section. If you think it is worth breaking out into its own section, I'm fine with the decision. I just wanted to note the relatively small sample size and fact that we can't assume the articles were exclusively edited by people who shared the same gender characteristics as the creators. (I know some of mine have not, as I have taken about ten to DYK, after asking for editing help from two males.)

I renamed the section that is now Comparison of Articles on Wikipedia and Other Wikis to that. This section is about where I think we left off in editing. Around line 796, "Using the analysis setting for..." I made what had been three paragraphs into one and tried to link it a bit better. The conclusions could be little more firm. I moved the wikiHow information that was in the conclusion part of that section to 623, where I also added information that helps suggest Geek Feminism Wiki has a female contributor base. If you think it would make more sense and give greater cohesion in the conclusion of the section, please feel free to move it back. :)

Outside of the areas mentioned (which please by all means fix), I think the second draft is mostly done and could use a cursory overview for a third reading. I've left the link for you on memoserv. If there are any major issues, I should be back around 9pm UTC+11, though I assume you'll likely be asleep by then. :)

Hi Pine! I've just come across one of your edits (or that you have been patrolling new pages), and noticed that you might appreciate some help with references.

I case you're not aware, you might consider using this tool – it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script:

But it is awesome! :D So, because I was curious, I played around got HI! MORE DATA! I used the user boxes on wikiHow to create a list of wikiHow users by gender. I then ran their userpages through the same analysis I did for Wikipedia users where we knew their gender based on user boxes. The results are here:

We're dealing with a much smaller sample from a site that has 43% female participation but an overall smaller contributor base. They have a greater percentage of females identifying with userboxes than Wikipedia does. (Suggests to me that women feel even more comfortable expressing femaleness there.) Beyond that, the program correctly identifies women 11% more often than it does on Wikipedia. 11% in this case seems significant to me. I think we can assume some bias for male writing nature in both spaces because of the factual nature conveyance for both… but Wikipedia's population and WikiHow's should match up if they were attracting similar types of females… and they aren't because there is that 11% difference. Beyond that, the program correctly identified male users within 1% (both roughly 71%) for wikiHow and Wikipedia. This says to me the two wikis have unique groups of female users as their characteristics are not the same.

Also, please do keep in mind that the article has images of both Kibō's different position in the freedom space station section, as well as the risk model image in the debris section as well, plus over-referencing, called cite overkill would be something to keep in mind too. I'd agree that the two images showing the risk model and the location of Kibo on the station, combined, support the statement. I also agree that over-referencing could be an issue, so I'm satisfied with not adding references. However, the references don't appear to support that "only significant change has been the placement of it's ballistic shielding." Also, I am concerned that http://www.astronautix.com/ appears to be a website belonging to a private writer who doesn't list his credentials, and is therefore not a reliable source. That's cool. I think sometimes, rather than just plagiarize 8-) I should use some of my own words, but naturally not 'make stuff up'. Summarizing sub-articles into main articles, or large sources into articles, it takes a bit of compression as well as simplification, or using easier to understand wording. They call it 'approachable' language in wiki-speak. I wouldn't worry about that site, if he has gone to that much trouble to come up with such a wealth of info, just to fool everyone, and has got away with it for so many years, well, I say we should all fall for it, out of professional courtesy to the greatest trickster of all time. Now NASA on the other hand, OMG misleading all the time (seriously) I could give you examples all day long. Hey what do you think of that link I gave on the talkpage ? I think it would be a little ironic of me to close that discussion, considering I've participated in it! I'm not sure it really needs closing as such- no changes need to be made, nothing needs to be clarified. That is not vandalism, not even borderline- he is opposing based on perceived flaws in the picture. We might claim that his reasoning is poor, and we may be able to do so more civilly than TropicalAnalystwx13, but we most certainly should not be trying to get him blocked. Editing assistance: Perspectives on women in the WMF movement

Hi. :D As you do a fantastic job editing, I was wondering if you might be willing to help improve some of the articles on Perspectives on women in the WMF movement. At the moment, I've mostly done a lot of random putting of data into these articles, much of which is repetitive across different countries. They have no organisation, no framework and often utilise really poor grammar. :( It would be great to improve the organisation and flow on some of these articles, begin to give some of them a more unique feel… instead of a generic perspective with just the numbers changed. :) The purpose of these little sections is to bench mark women's related content by country, the on wiki involvement of women women from a certain country, the involvement of women inside the country (chapters or running events) and the involvement of women behind the scenes in the larger context of Wikimedia Foundation projects. It needs to be written as neutrally as possible, to not condemn the WMF for any failures here, nor to make the WMF look extra special awesome for how well they have done that. Re: FP category

Panoramas go in the panorama category. It's a panorama, so... If you think that categorising content based on height to width ratio is silly, I'm likely to agree with you. However, that would mean re-allocating all the existing panoramas. I was involved in a big re-organisation that was started many months ago and is now mostly complete, where among other things, the distinction between wikipedian and non-wikipedian images was removed. If you want to argue for something similar w.r.t. panoramas, I will support your argument, but I won't be doing any of the work.

Three other comments:

1. The category specification was originally added to make it easier for closer. So the way I see it, it's still closer's discretion, although closers can obviously make mistakes (and more people should be active as closers).
2. From what I've seen, in those cases where the EV of the picture is for a bridge, they've mostly ended up in Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Places/Others. So I see that as the status quo that you would have to challenge (and that your current placement runs against).
3. There are people who think that listing in multiple FP categories is okay or even desirable, and there are some who think that's bloat. For possible future re-organisation, it's definitely easier if each picture is in just one category.

Depression (mood)

Wrt your most recent edit at Depression (mood), my comment that medication, psychotherapy and ECT are the mainstays of medical treatment is readily sourceable, but I agree with its removal until it's sourced to a WP:MEDRS-compliant source. As for the applicability and efficacy of the other interventions for depression associated with psychiatric syndromes, I'm concerned that we don't mislead the reader. Would you consider deleting that content until those assertions are sourced to a WP:MEDRS-compliant source?

The present content of that whole article is mostly uncontroversial, but it nevertheless is badly bereft of sources. I've got a lot on right now, but will eventually get to that if no one else has in the meantime. --Anthonyhcole (talk) 06:57, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

I removed the statement "depression associated with a mental disorder" from the section that lists treatments because the article isn't about clinical depression directly, and I don't think that we need to worry about WP:MEDRS as much because most of the studies are talking about treatments for clinical depression instead of the "simple" mood of depression. I think we need to make clear that clinical depression is a separate subject from what's covered in Depression (mood). However, many of the articles that are linked from the treatment paragraph do have references that talk about effectiveness. Pine^(talk) 07:51, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

WP:MEDRS is essential for all medical content. As it now stands, that section, Depression (mood)#Treatment, is a bit of a mish-mash. Since most of the included treatments are unsourced, and as a precaution against inadvertently misleading the reader, I'll remove the section for now. Let's work on the wording on the talk page, and post it into the article when we've got something that is coherent, useful and reliably sourced. I can't attend to that immediately - I'm meant to be addressing Cancer pain next - but will get to it soon. Feel free to start without me. My main concern is not having unsourced and possibly useless/erroneous assertions about treatment in the article. This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months. Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

• Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.

• First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
• Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
• Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
• Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! Photo Question.

I was strolling thru my new HighBeam account and did a search on Chesterfield, Idaho, an article I worked on when I first got started. I saw on HighBeam where the photographer of the images, Val Roberts, had passed away a few months back at the age of 75. I've always loved this photo he took of the Denmark Jensen cabin. It is a saltbox house built in 1884, three years after Chesterfield was settled. The small building to the right is a root cellar. Do you think it is FP worth? Sorry, I've done FA and FL, but I'm not a photographer, so I have no idea about FPs. Bgwhite (talk) 06:52, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

A historic building probably has enough encyclopedic value to meet that part of the FPC criteria, but this photo of the building probably would fail FPC because the image size is too small and the image isn't clear enough. I have a higher resolution photo in my email. I just uploaded and replaced the photo with the higher res version. Hopefully this is better. Lucky I kept the over two year old email. I better update the other Chesterfield photos. I do have a question. Whenever I goto commons, it asks me to login. Has been doing this for awhile, but didn't used to. Commons is still showing me the lower resolution photo, but maybe there's a delay between your upload and when it becomes available for others to download. Had me scared I did something wrong, but things look ok. Would clearing out the web browser cache help? I'm logging in via https on both sites. I just logged out of commons and it also logged me out on Wikipedia. When I re-logged into Wikipedia, I wasn't logged into commons. STRAT-X

Hello Pine. We use the GOCE Requests page for requests made by editors to GOCE as a whole, that any editor may pick up. Throughout Wikipedia, many copy edits and similar things are done by private arrangement, and we don't record or archive those, as there is really no need. My understanding was that you did STRAT-X when Sp33dyphil accepted an offer you made privately. If so, we don't need to record that. Have I misunderstood it? GOCE May drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Last drive's superstar, Lfstevens, again stood out, topping the leader board in all three categories and copy-editing over 700 articles. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: We were once again successful in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog—while removing 1166 articles from the queue, the second-most in our history. The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago. Coodinator election: The six-month term for our third tranche of Guild coordinators will be expiring at the end of June. Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!

• Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!

Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!

• What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
• ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
• Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement

• 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
• Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
• New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.

• Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
• New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:

• Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
• Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
• Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
• Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.

re United States

I didn't get the chance to give a better explanation than what was given when someone else reverted, so here it is: The territories are not part of the country, but rather possessions thereof, just like Gibraltar and Man, etc., are not parts of the United Kingdom. The United States itself is constituted by fifty states, one federal district, and one incorporated, unorganized territory (Palmyra Atoll). Everything else is an unincorporated territory, and thus not part of the constitutional framework. --Golbez (talk) 13:59, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

• I was looking at this discussion here. It seemed to me that this hadn't been resolved conclusively one way or the other, so I WP:BOLDLY made the change. Is the distinction the one made in Balzac v. Porto Rico of what belongs to the United States versus what is a part of the United States? If so, I think that the case should be cited in the opening paragraph of the article to make that distinction clear. Pine^✉ 19:36, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Participate in a user study on UW campus?

Hi Pine, Us UW folks are looking for a few veteran Wikipedians to participate in a usability study of our new editing toolbar, called Re:Flex. The study would require you to come to our lab in Sieg Hall on UW campus (at a date and time that works for you), would talke approximately 1 hour, and you will be compensated for your time.

This study has been approved by RComm and by UW's Institutional Review Board, and any additional information about the study (such as the purpose of the study, and how we will store and use your session data) is available upon request.

The Tea Leaf - Issue Five

Stop by for a tasty glass of wiki-iced tea at the Teahouse, today!

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

• Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteers who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
• More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
• Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
• New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
• Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

Wikipedia Takes America/Seattle needs you. Please sign up to participate, and discuss a date and meeting location. And maybe volunteer to be the organizer. I've been tagging articles needing photos for Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Seattle, Washington.
