WikiProject University of California

Phoebe: I think that the campus-specific task forces are a great way to go. I am thinking the GLAM projects, which are about the libraries qua libraries as opposed to the libraries as sub-units of the campus, are still useful. Articles about the campuses and campus issues would get tagged as being in the scope of the task forces, whereas articles related to collection content from the libraries would get tagged as part of the GLAM projects. The automated message doesn't quite explain my reason for deletion. It went G6 and was so speedy that I hardly had chance to catch my breath. There were two disambiguation pages, at ASM International and ASM International (disambiguation), both of which disambiguated to two articles ASM International (society) and ASM International (company). (It was the first I was looking for.) Since these are actually already at the DAB at ASM, it seemed pointless to have the other two DABs that were not really DABbing anything more. Phoebe - I have a roughly complete sandbox page for Isabel Montanez, but some of the references are repeated, there are likely some tags it needs (like name variations?), and it could use an edit by someone else for clarity. @Dysumner: Hi! I went ahead and moved the article to Isabel P. Montañez, so it is published. For the picture, we are picky about only having freely licensed pictures uploaded to Wikipedia. So if she has a picture that she is willing to release the rights to, or if you or someone else takes a picture of her that you're willing to license CC-BY-SA, that would be great. You would then upload the picture to Wikimedia Commons, and from there we can link it into the Wikipedia article. Submitted bio & now photo is fixed

Hi Phoebe, thanks for the teahouse invitation. Based on your recommendation during the edit-a-thon in the fall at the Berkeley Meetup to provide more of a narrative to my accepted submission on Neuromodulation (Medicine), I looked for information about one of the pivotal contributors to the field's development and only found a Wikipedia entry about him on the Wikipedia site in his native country, France. So I worked on creating an entry for him on the English Wikipedia site. I think I have now solved a temporary snafu about adding a photo of him from Wikimedia. Since my Sandbox submission from last week appears to have been flagged as missing a file (the initial photo link), I wondered if you could take a look, and if everything looks okay, unflag that? My goal was to be able to link back to the bio from the already published entry about the field in general. It seemed simpler to have a separate bio online as background. honoring Adrianne Wadewitz?

Hi Phoebe,

This is perhaps a bit random, but given that I was introduced to the Teahouse efforts and other new user mentoring efforts by Adrianne, I figured turning to mentors to help remember her makes sense. I don't know if you've heard that Adrianne recently passed away after a traumatic head injury sustained in a rock climbing fall. The academic communities in which Adrianne participated are reeling and looking for ways to help celebrate her life. I worked with her training other academics to edit Wikipedia and one idea that people are interested in is an edit-a-thon in her honor. Ideally we'd like to make this a joint effort between Adrianne's two intellectual homes - Wikipedia and academic institutions. I've contacted Sarah Stritch as well, but I thought I'd be in touch with you given how much of advocate Adrianne was for developing relationships with experienced Wikipedians who mentor.

I support this idea for an edit-a-thon in her honor and also suggest that another goal could be to improve our coverage of notable women climbers and climbing safety. Josephson Effect Merge

Hey Phoebe, add my two cents of support to the Talk:Josephson_effect merge. ^_^ It would really help us over in Graphene-article land and maybe even start to stem the tide of drive-by tagging that happens every so often to the article. Please do the merge when you have the chance and enough support. (Kind of wish there was a session at upcoming Conference about the problem of drive-by tagging. Its really taken its toll on the quality of the graphene article. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed

WMF superblocks it's community

Hi,

since Erik doesn't answer, I'm now sending this remark to some other WMF officers and board members. I apologize for using your time.

I'm a crat in german wp. The so-called super-protections that Erik Möller/User:Eloquence and User:JEissfeldt (WMF) have put on our common.js on sunday, acting officially on behalf of WMF, have left some blood on the carpet. Many fellow wikipedians are upset, even those who accept the media viewer (which had been the conflict's origin). Several long-time contributors have left or stopped editing due to this. Journalists picked up the case.

Personally, I strongly protest against the WMF's action, and it's failure to communicate afterwards. Our communities are capable, and willing, to handle problems like this without office-actions.

There have been no official or private comments from WMF in the last days, so I'd like to suggest you have a look and give some response to the criticism.

Thank you for your messages. Yes, I am aware of the discussion. The board was informed by Erik of the actions taken, and additionally I have been reading the mailing lists (wikimedia-l and wikitech-l); I also read the Kurier discussion (via Google translate, which is not perfect, but I can't read much German so it will have to do).

There are two issues -- whether to adopt the mediaviewer and the superprotection level. I understand that although whether to adopt the mediaviewer was the first controversy, the superprotection level is the bigger source of criticism and unhappiness on a philosophical level. I have two perspectives on the issue, first as a trustee of the Wikimedia Foundation, which is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure and software of 800+ wikis with a combined active editor base of 80,000 and a readership of half a billion; and second, as a long-time editor myself of multiple projects.

From both perspectives, I understand and support the decision our team has taken. Let me try to explain why. I do not think it is sustainable across so many wikis for the engineering team -- which is responsible for a remarkably complicated piece of software with many, many dependencies -- to not have an option to lock part of the interface. This does not mean that there is no room left for local innovation, for weighing in on software changes (or working on them if you're a developer) or that local writers and editors and admins are not valued. It means that there are some changes that we want and need to be available to all wikis, and that there are some kinds of changes that can accidentally be quite harmful to the code and the projects.

Beta features is a good example of a change we want to be available to everyone. If I read the Kurier discussion properly, some people are saying they didn't get a chance to test Media Viewer because a link to Beta features was locally disabled by an admin a while back, so they didn't know it existed. If that's so, that decision had consequences for every local editor, who might not have realized they could test out and weigh in on various new software features. I hope that I read the page wrong, or that Google translate was wrong, because I really don't like the idea that German editors didn't get a chance to see and experiment with many new features and that the WMF did not get German community feedback as a result. I would hope of course that this kind of issue would be sorted out locally, and indeed it usually is. But across so many projects, there will always be some cases where that's not possible. For the accidental use case, imagine a wiki with just a couple of admins where a script is accidentally placing a heavy server load or breaking other things. Usually of course that kind of issue can be fixed without contention, but sometimes there are arguments, and then our engineering staff should be able to step in. (And since the majority of admins and editors, myself included, don't have the technical skill to modify the javascript this is certainly not taking away control from all editors as some have been portraying it).

As for my perspective as an editor: when I started editing in 2003, Wikipedia looked similar to this. (Perhaps you remember it too). I loved Wikipedia at the time, and I still love it, but I am glad it no longer looks like that. Similarly, in 2023, I don't want Wikipedia to look like what it did in 2013. But that doesn't mean our mission of creating and sharing free knowledge changes; I hope it means actually that it will get easier and smoother for all editors to write articles and add photos, videos and sounds, and to discuss that process and how to present our sites to the world.

Thank you for your response. You misunderstand my point and perhaps the larger issue. I don't care about implementation of the MediaViewer as I already use it. I have no opinion as to the superprotect issue, either. I object Eloquence/Erik's issuance of royal decrees. @Chris troutman: It is Erik's job, as CTO and deputy director, to make this kind of decision; he is asked to do so by the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees. They are not "royal decrees"; they are decisions, made with lots of other people, that he has the ultimate responsibility for (and as such also takes the heat for). I am sorry you find this so unsettling that it makes you want to leave the project. BTW, I hope that your visiting scholar position goes well; I am colleagues and friends with the people at the UCR library who set it up, and talked to them several months ago about Wikipedia projects, so I am interested in how the project goes. I hope that you're able to get access to some of their great archival resources. Dear phoebe, on several issues concerned, please see my and other posts at User_talk:LilaTretikov. Regarding your last reply: No, it is not at all Erik's "job" to overrule a local binding consensus, to (mis)use developers in a totally unprecedented case to establish a new user hierarchy, to equip a user group (WMF staff) without any mandidate by the relevant community with new overruling technical "rights", and to (mis)use those "rights" to intervene against a binding consensus of said community. Instead, all of this is a grave violation of conventions regarding the relationship between WMF and the contributors and content providers on wikipedias and wikicommons. Thus, i strongly advise you to reconsider your perception of the matter at stake. In this respect, you should find the norms and viewpoints highlighted at aforementioned talk page helpful. Chris troutman is far from being the only one finding such behavior absolutely "unsettling", and with good (and elsewhere already thoroughly explained) reasons. Just to be clear, what we are talking about is a software change: adding an additional protection level in the mediawiki namespace. The mediawiki software, as developed and maintained by the WMF, is under Erik's responsibility. No, we are not at all only talking about a mere "software change". We are talking about a) a software change which in a totally unprecedented way created a new user hierarchy, b) which has already been misused, to c) override a local consensus, plus d) explicit threats against elected representatives as well as e) arrogant and inacceptable communication procedures on the part of WMF employees. All of this goes against core principles governing the relationship between WMF and the grounding communities WMF had formerly been a part of. As you yourself say, all of this was "under the ... Board's responsibility". You being a board member, it was and continues to be also under your responsibility. We expect you, as well as every other Board member, to step in and try and resolve the issue. Maybe, with proper amends, not all might be lost. However, several users, not only Chris, have regrettably already taken steps to no longer be a part of a thus broken former "community". You can hardly possibly make good on the total of already produced damage anytime soon, should you not immediately and visibly work towards reversing WMF's handling of this matter. @Phoebe: Yes, I'm enjoying this post with UCR. I've received excellent help from Eric Milenkiewicz at the Special Collections department in Rivera library. It's very exciting to get hold of these hard-to-find print materials and I'm pleased to get continued online access to academic resources, especially as my access through my alma mater ends. My year-long appointment will also likely result in the biggest content creation phase of my short Wikipedia career. I will be writing a final summary report in May 2015 for UCR and I'll approach The Signpost about publishing it as well. There are also plans to have an edit-a-thon at UCR and possibly open the door to WEF participation so I can act as a campus ambassador there following my Fall semester 2014 class with USC.

So for all those reasons you can understand why I and so many others want to continue with Wikipedia. If Eloquence's actions (threatening to unilaterally desysop an admin) are representative of the WMF's wishes, then it confirms that the editor-WMF relationship really is broken and I won't consent to contributing content for free in that environment past May 2015. I am only willing to recognize the authority of elected Wikipedians (admins, bureaucrats, and ARBCOM) and if that's not possible going forward then so be it. Reliability project

Hi Phoebe. I'm trying to get a sense of how individual board members feel about en.Wikipedia putting a prominent badge at the top of an article that links to a revision of that article that has passed rigorous scholarly review.

I recently discussed it on Jimmy's talk page here, and he's supportive ("...if we had a serious peer review process to run medical articles (or others, but medical is a good place to start) through some recognized expert process, then we should link prominently to that reviewed version." Hi user:Anthonyhcole: As an editorial matter, this isn't a board decision -- it's not within our scope. But, as an editor: I would be happy to see us link to a reviewed version, perhaps in the header ("latest reviewed version"); I think there was a version of flaggedrevs that did this prominently, and we could have an adaptation that reflected/badged particular review processes (outside review, etc.). I think I am in favor of continuing to display an editable/latest version to encourage new editors (and because the majority of articles won't have a reviewed version, at least at first). A lot of this comes down to usability, and where we encourage readers to look and click. On a separate topic, your message made me think: I run a gadget that displays the quality rating underneath each article (User:Pyrospirit/metadata). Hi there!

I'd like to ask you for a favour, as you apparently seem to be one of the very few Wikipedians that might be able to help me out here. I want to extend the article Lake Waiau with some information on the animal and plant life of the lake. The only publication I could find for that is the following PhD thesis:

As it so happens (according to a reply in de:WP:BIBA) the only copy outside of Hawaii is as UC Davis. So I was wondering whether could scan and email the table of content and possible a few pages of particular interest.

Also: I took a quick look in the databases and it appears that Massey wrote some other articles about the lake; there's also a handful of other references. Nothing specifically about macrofauna, but Massey seems to have written about diatoms and phytoplankton in the lake. Those might be better sources just because they might be slightly more available to readers/editors? And of course I also followed up and learned much from your user page. I especially need to be better at finding suitable source refs, so I tried some of your links to help the rest of us editors. Thank you! Here is one which I don't think works, however:

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Phoebe. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.
