File:Georgecarlinmugshot.jpg and WP:RAT

Would you mind reconsidering your undeletion of the above file? The file should have stayed deleted. There is not 1 single valid rationale on the image's page. Each time the image is used, it needs a separate, detailed, named rationale. It did not have one when I tagged it and it still doesn't.--Rockfang (talk) 21:32, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

On a slightly separate note, if the file does stay, I suggest restoring the talk page. It apparently noted that the file had once gone through a deletion review.--Rockfang (talk) 22:03, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rockfang, I agree about the inadequate rationale, however given there was previously a deletion discussion, and the decision overturned at deletion review, I think listing it at WP:FFD is a justifiable course of action. PhilKnight (talk) 22:37, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Roger that, thanks for the reply.--Rockfang (talk) 22:43, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

About a blocked user

I reported user Cheddarjack for vandalism. However after looking through their history page, it seems that the user is actually trying to help and has made several genuine contributions, but doesn't fully understand the guidelines (how to add a source, etc) and mistakenly erased sources.

I went by the warnings they had on their page and by an edit that seem to be vandalism, on the 2012 film page. If possible, may I ask that their block be undone? I feel really bad for getting them, what seems to be, falsely blocked indefinitely. Thanks for your consideration. --Mike Allen talk · contribs 22:45, 15 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Micwa, I've unblocked. PhilKnight (talk) 22:46, 15 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Westerplatte

Thanks, but I'm not interested. I managed to get the Polish Ministry of Diplomacy to let Wiki use their pictures (this one among them), but this was not enough for the copyright paranoids here. Which means there's nothing I can do to make people keep or delete media. Thanks for the notification though, it's good to know some of the pictures we uploaded so long ago are still there. //Halibutt 06:18, 19 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Request for talk page protection

I saw you are a mediator and an administrator-- I am mediating over at the Mediation Cabal the major case of a dispute on the article 'Race and Intelligence'. As I have noted near the bottom of the page, I have posted a deadline for final statements before I evaulate the issues and set out an agenda to work with. I would like to request that you protect the talk page for 48 hours to allow this to take its course.

Thanks and Cheers! --Reubzz (talk) 22:18, 19 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Reubzz, given the previous co-mediator, Xavexgoem, is also an admin, I'll leave it to his discretion. PhilKnight (talk) 23:20, 19 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Image file history

Can the person's face be deleted from the history of File:Scrotum2.jpg? I think it was part of an attack on someone, related to this edit of the recently blocked Takers biggest fan (talk · contribs). Thanks! --Dbratland (talk) 07:31, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Search string

On Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Search links could you include a sentence or two on what this is for and how an editor can install it? I presume it's only for registered accounts. -- Banjeboi 01:44, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Benjiboi, there's a brief explanation at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts#Searching. There aren't any special installation instructions, you just copy the code into your monobook.js page, and clear the cache. PhilKnight (talk) 11:41, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Could you add something like - A brief explanation is at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts#Searching. To install, copy the code into your monobook.js page, and clear the cache. - to the page? -- Banjeboi 16:58, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
The installation procedure is explained at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts. However if you want to put some sort of explanation on the talk page, then go ahead. PhilKnight (talk) 18:59, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think instructions, or a link to them, should be right there on the page so users can sort it out themselves. I really don't have any idea how to do any of it so I imagine newer users would be more lost. I was hoping something similar we see on the documentation for how to use a template could be added. It may be too technical so simply isn't used that much so I may be completely off on this though. -- Banjeboi 03:35, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've adjusted the explanation on the script page, and put some instructions about how to install on the talk page. Regarding your idea about instructions on the scripts page, I guess you could raise that at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts. PhilKnight (talk) 15:50, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I started a thread. -- Banjeboi 23:18, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Many Thanks...

...for indefinitely blocking MAC oWeN after he made a death threat on my page. I feel the punishment was well-deserved. One quick question if I may: I see he was cited for 'block evasion', a phrase I am not familiar with. Does that mean an established editor made that threat? Thanks. Jusdafax 00:03, 3 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jusdafax, glad to help. Regarding the block reason, new accounts that make a vitriolic personal attack in their very first edit are usually returning vandals. PhilKnight (talk) 14:30, 3 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Agree. Any way of knowing who? If it's just one of the everyday vandals, no problem - I'd expect no less from some of 'em - but as I have been in some disputed waters in the past few months, if the editor making a death threat is one of the folks I've been dealing with, it would be quite interesting. Thanks for any light you can shed on the matter, or advice on where to take this. And again, thanks for your protective action. Jusdafax 04:34, 4 December 2009 (UTC) UPDATE: Having done further research, I withdraw the question. Thanks yet again, Jusdafax 11:57, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Advice

Hi. I am just getting my feet wet with the page patrols. If I mark something for speedy delete, should I then click the "patrolled" thingy at the bottom right so it doesn't appear yellow anymore? Thanks. --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:10, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Kingston Hospital Radio

Please can you explain why you have deleted the page Kingston Hospital Radio? As a firs time user of Wikipedia it took me a long time to do. The owner of website www.khr.org.uk has been asked to take that site down as it is conflicting with the new official page at www.khronline.com. They claim to be unable to do this. All of the content on www.khr.org.uk is also on www.khronline.com. KHR is a charity, which relies on time from volunteers, and to have this taken down within hours and without contact first is not helpful to a charity. I am not sure why you could not have contacted me first if you had issues with the new page. I would appreciate the page being put back. paul enfield

Hi Paul, I suggest you follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Copyright problems#Copyright owners who submitted their own work to Wikipedia. PhilKnight (talk) 15:17, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wrong guy?

PhilKnight, Opened up Wikipedia today, and found this message from you:

User talk:69.143.221.216
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia,
you will be blocked from editing. PhilKnight (talk) 07:55, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

I also noted the disclaimer:

"This is the discussion page for an IP user, identified by the user's numerical IP address.
Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users.
If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users.
Registering also hides your IP address."

In any event, since you've got that explicit threatened punishment of "blocked from editing", I wanted to respond.

First, can you give me the reference to what the vandalism was? I've got kids, maybe they did something they shouldn't have (from the home computer) and I can talk with them about that.
Second, for my part, I'm a long-standing wikipedia contributor, with over 4,000 edits, participating since 2003 (yes, oh-three). - Thaimoss (talk) 00:37, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi Thaimoss, it was this edit which resulted in the warning. Anyway, seeing you have now inhereted the IP address, I'll blank the warning. Thanks for letting me know. PhilKnight (talk) 10:29, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
PhilKnight, thanks for clearing that up. Yeah, I'd put that at 'nearly certain' that that edit didn't come from here. Looks like the IP address rolled over to me. Appreciate your work in keeping the vandals at bay. - Thaimoss (talk) 02:18, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:GatewaymallSTLhallway.jpg

Regarding the deletion of GatewaymallSTLhallway.jpg and the arbitrary explaination of why, I would have preferred if you had contacted me and talked to me about it first. Then it could have been removed from the page, and we could have discussed it on the talk page. If you think my justification is weak, then we could have discussed it. It isn't really copyrighted anyway. As I wrote, it is public property, but not specifically in the collective commons. DaronDierkes (talk) 01:01, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

As I wrote, the image was created by a private company for my city's government and the government has authorized its use. I don't believe that's the same as creative commons, and there aren't many image categories to choose from. The director of the conservancy for the government park said in e-mail to me quote, "The images in the Master Plan, while created by Urban Strategies and Thomas Balsley Associates, are owned by the City, so use of them is fine." Perhaps that removes it from the 'non-free' category, but I'm unclear on the exact designation I should be giving it on wikipedia.
Regardless, please communicate with people before you destroy their efforts. As you have a peaceful dove on your user page, it would behoove you not to go around making people angry. DaronDierkes (talk) 02:46, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi Daron, I've restored the image and opened a discussion at files for deletion. PhilKnight (talk) 12:05, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Edit wars

Edit wars do not apply to removing severe personal attacks and outing attempts. These attacks were moved to arbcom evidence pages and do not belong on talk pages. Miami33139 (talk) 19:06, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Have a look at WP:3rr#Exceptions to 3RR, which, in my humble opinion, doesn't include the comments made by Tothwolf. PhilKnight (talk) 19:12, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I am a living person. Removing personal attacks on myself, and WP:OUTING attempts on another editor from an article talk page (which were left in violation of WP:TALK) are clearly exempt by common sense. If this is not the case then Wikipedia is broken. Nobody should have to put up with personal attacks and nobody should have to put up with other editors restoring personal attacks because of some misapplied guideline. Miami33139 (talk) 19:47, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
