Fair use rationale for File:Edward Albert Prince of Wales Investiture Medallion 1911.png edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Edward Albert Prince of Wales Investiture Medallion 1911.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Acather96 (talk) 19:23, 28 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Far East Council 1950s.png edit

Thanks for uploading File:Far East Council 1950s.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

PLEASE NOTE:

Four images edit

A request edit

Hello, PawełMM. You helped many times before and I wonder if you could do it once again. There are three pictures which are being used in Featured Articles I wrote that I believe could be improved:

  1. This is a painting of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. I might be mistaken, but I always had the feeling that there is something wrong about it. I don't know if it's lacking constrast... Since you're an expert, if you believe that there is something that can be done about it, that would be good.
  2. This one is a daguerreotype of Pedro II. My only real issue with it is that it looks too bright, don't you think so? Could it be fixed? If yes, could you create a frameless version with translucid background of it and copy to this other file?
  3. Now this one is a daguerreotype of Pedro II's wife, Teresa Cristina. My complain about it it's that the picture is clearly a low quality scan. I believe it's called "noise". Take a look carefully and you'll notice that all over it there are noises. Could you do something about it? Is yes, could you also create a frameless version with translucid background and copy to here?

I don't want you to remove scratches or anything that came from the real photos (I want to keep the "old" feeling from them), but only fix any issues that came from poor scan. Also, don't feel obliged to do it, in case you're too busy or you simply don't want to, ok? Kind regards, --Lecen (talk) 17:54, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I liked Pedro II's daguerreotype, but not his wife's photo nor the painting. I'll try to scan an improved version of both. Anyway, thank you very much for your help. You've done a great favor. Kind regards, --Lecen (talk) 22:33, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

datestamp removal edit

Hi PawelMM. I noticed that in some watermark removals you did, you changed {{watermark}} to {{watermark removed}}. That's good. But to do that for a datestamp essentially places an inaccurate tag on the description page. "Watermark removed" states "Attribution information, such as the author's name, e-mail, website, or signature, that was once visible in the image itself". In this example no such attribution information was removed or moved. Only the date was removed. So, if you remove an attribution watermark, use "watermark removed" (and make sure the attribution info is in the description). If you remove a datestamp, just remove "watermark" (and put the photo date in the description if you think it's pertinent). – JBarta (talk) 18:15, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not trying to annoying, but would you mind doing three of those four signatures again? I didn't like the "blue aura" around Pedro I's two signatures, so I uploaded newer versions with grey background: File:Signed initials of Pedro I of Brazil.jpg and File:Signature of Pedro I of Brazil.jpg. The last one was Pedro II's signed initials, which I considered not dark enough: File:Signed initials of Pedro II of Brazil.jpg. Could you reupload them based on those newer versions? I know, I'm being annoying, sorry. --Lecen (talk) 10:33, 4 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:Alois Hudal signature.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Alois Hudal signature.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. File permission problem with File:Wadah Khanfar.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Wadah Khanfar.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 20:44, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

The shadow for the handheld stick is missing. QuackGuru (talk) 17:07, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

The image is not centered like the original image. I think we need to start over by using the original image and then upload a new image with shadows. QuackGuru (talk) 17:18, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

That image should be deleted. I removed it from the article. Even if it was fixed the image with the grey back is being used for another page. Anna Laetitia Barbauld edit

Hi. Increasing the saturation and contrast is one thing (I personally think you probably went too far from the original, but that's a matter of taste, and it's fine) - however, the 1px border I left around the image was a deliberate thing which I should explain: Look at the usage in Anna Laetitia Barbauld and see how, without that gap, the jagged edges of the cut-out turn into visually ugly flat, straight sections at the four points where the image touches the border. The 1px gap avoids that happening. Compare [3] and [4] to see the issue clearly. -- Begoon 07:13, 14 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Two-step clone painting edit

The technique I was taught is one I like to call two-step clone painting. Forgive me for assuming you're using GIMP, but GIMP is what I have to reference right now, while I'm at work. I'll swing back tonight at home and add in some references to Photoshop when I can look at the interface.

Basically, what you're doing is creating a palette of textures by using the clone tool with the alignment turned off (because if you can paint with the alignment turned on, you're just clone painting). You make each sample in the palette by finding two or more different shades of a texture and then blending them. Then you just hand paint back in, using those textures. Except for the final trick below, this summary might be enough, so I'll put the rest in a collapse you can read if you like.

Extended content

You start by finding a region that has the right texture to it. In this case, that's just whatever was to the immediate right or left of the area of the while strip.

  • Grab your clone tool and ensure that the alignment is set to "none" (it's at the bottom of the Tool Options window). Also ensure that you're using a fairly hard-edged brush to start with.
  • Find a reference point free of any details such as corners, then set it as the reference for the tool.
  • Create a new layer to serve as your palette, and begin using single clicks and short strokes to build out an area of that texture. Because your alignment was turned off, your reference point "resets" with every brush stroke.
  • Once you have a decent-sized sample, find another spot with the same texture but a slightly different shade. Look for highlights or shadows or whatever. Then repeat the process, building up a texture sample right next to your original sample.
  • Next, set your opacity way down and switch to a softer-edged brush. Then, using the palette samples, start blending the two different shades. This should be a fairly quick transition, but big enough that you can choose points in the middle or more to one side or another when you're painting back in, later.
  • Repeat this process for all the different shades of that texture. For example, on the carved sides of the table, there were three distinct versions: a very dark one, a lighter yellow one, and a lighter blue-ish one.
  • Once you've done this for at least one texture, adjust your brush and opacity however you think best, and using the clone tool, set a reference point on your palette layer and start painting on a new layer. Use the different shades as needed.
  • The final step is to use the healing brush to "fix" your texture. You'll notice that your texture is just a little bit "off" compared to the existing stuff. This is a result of the pattern that forms when you were making your palette. So using the healing brush, pick a spot with a good texture and start brushing that texture over your painted portion.
  • One last thing: In this case, this work had lines, because it was a drawing that was colored in (likely with a mix of watercolors and colored pencils, given the subject). Since the color scheme was warm, I picked a nice brown color, and on a new layer, drew in those lines with a small, round hard-edged brush. I then set that layer to "multiply" and adjusted the opacity until it looked right.

I hope you find this useful. If you think it is, and you'd like me to go into more detail, I can set up a small tutorial page, similar to my tutorial on colorizing black and white photos. I don't like to just jump ahead with this sort of stuff, because we're all skilled here and it can come across as condescending to write up long-winded "lectures" about the right way to do things. So let me know what you think. Is this an awesome technique that should be shared, or just the same old crap every skilled image editor already knows, or somewhere in between? I'd appreciate any feedback, and for the record, if you ever have any techniques you'd like to share, I'm always 100% open to learning new things. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 13:53, 15 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

File:David Kalakaua Kawananakoa.jpg edit

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:11, 19 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
