Hi, I'm afraid I don't know anything about the surname. All I remember is that there were different pronunciations going around (ADD-es, a-DES, even Addis!). Lady Helen Taylor

I'm confused. What is "the more obvious way"? If there's an alternative, I'm quite happy to hear it, but my concern was that I don't think we can justify separate articles for her children purely on the basis that it makes the succession boxes look nicer. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. Degree awarding powers

Hi, I'm afraid I've no rigorous proof of this... though there was a reference to it in The Times recently... but then journalists are certainly fallible. The article mentioned that there were a few colleges that had been granted the power to award degrees (possibly through having their own Charter?) but never used these powers. However, with no hard proof I won't swear by it or place it any Wiki articles. Presumably you attended Oxford?

I am not sure of the validity of the "Registered Bodies" link - for example it lists Goldsmiths College, though this is a constituent college of the University of London that cannot award its own degrees.--Zoso Jade (talk) 22:59, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Nature of degree ceremonies

I've just seen your interesting note on my talk page comparing practices at SOAS and Oxford. To take your points in no particular order certainly it is also the case at Cambridge that the same degree cannot be conferred twice - for example if a student undertakes examinations for the degree of MPhil twice in two different subject then, on passing the second examination, he would be given a certificate by the Secretary of the University's Board of Graduate Studies certifying that he had passed the examination. He would not have the degree conferred on him again. The argument that being two identical degrees is conceptually silly is easier to make if the language of "admitted to the degree of ..." is used: if you are being admitted to a status within a university then how can you be admitted to it again? Cambridge, like Oxford, does not classify its degrees. It classifies the marks in examinations (so that, in Cambridge, you can have a different class in each Part of a Tripos examination).

So far as London is concerned, I believe that its governance arrangements has recently changed. But its current Statute 16 says that each college "shall be entitled to award degrees of the University, and (provided it has power to do so) may award its own degrees subject to any protocols that the Board of Trustees may establish." - so it sounds as only the college is needed to award a UoL degree now. But so far as your own case is concerned it looks to me as though you're entirely right. Savirr (talk) 13:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Italics

I guess if I have any thinking at all it is that there would not be enough material to write an article, but nevertheless it may have something available - either on-line, or from a reference library. I am not sure when you started editing, but the site went through a period when quite unbelievable articles were getting deleted and I guess I saw little point in putting things in red. Personally I would love to see articles on Anglican Training Colleges and other institutions related to the key figures in the Church's history. Bashereyre (talk) 07:01, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

4. When trying to delete a page, veteran editors love to use a lot of rule acronyms. These acronyms don't need to intimidate you. Here is a list of acronyms you can use yourself: Deletion debate acronyms, which will help you argue that the article should be kept.

John Tosh

You are quite right of course, the trouble is I do not know which route to his degrees John Tosh took. I merely repeated the bald information contained about his degrees on his staff profile page at Roehampton. What is in the Wikipedia article about him is therefore factually accurate. I agree it might be a better if the details about incoporation etc. could be made explicit. Yes Oxonian2006, I may well have got a few things wrong. I looked for the original article I used (LSE Alumni publication) but could not find it. I guess you did not know him but he was a wonderful man. How he would have loved the current political crisis. Yes, mea culpa and I believe you are probably right on both points. Certainly, I have nothing with which to dispute your logic; on the first point, I am almost certainly wrong in describing it as "honorary" (though a silly enough mistake to make me wonder why I ever thought it made sense) and secondly, yes, that was the date of his matriculation. Academicals

Richard,

Thank you for writing to me. I only posted a few photos on Wikipedia but this is a small amount compared to my collection. Some of the photos are on the yahoo group photo section but most on on my farcebook page (Charles Rupert Tsua). I did post some on the farcebook group but they were taken down each time for some reason so I just gave up. The photo on my wikipage is a gown I had specially made by S&W, an officers' gown of the Xi Kang Qin Society which I am Registrar of. LittMus: I actually forgot what that is! It is a made up thingy sometime ago of which I forgot about.
