Hotel Tryp Habana Libre

Osvaldo, I'm excited to see you're so interested in Cuban history, but your continued revisions to the page for this hotel are troubling. You've now twice deleted almost the entire gallery. You've placed historical photos which may still be under copyright on the page. You placed them within the body of the article, making it difficult for mobile users to read the article. Having all the photos at the end in one gallery is much easier for mobile users than having them throughout the article. You added sections, which is fine, but you turned all the sub-sections into individual sections. Some of the names you gave them are not even in English. The photo you added for your "Ley revolucionaria" section is unrelated to the hotel, it's about banks being nationalized. Everyone here is glad to see new members who want to help, but I've been helping to maintain this page for years, I wrote the majority of the text. thank you for the note. I thought the photo gallery (is) excessive, repetitive and uninformative (same with Hotel Nacional de Cuba. I was just following Wki protocol to '(not) use images or galleries excessively.' there is more on my talk page re. photographs because I've been down this road, I used to "load up" galleries with "repetitive" photographs. I can refer you to various pages where the photographs are in the body of the article as Wikipedia advises, so, that is the law. Can you honestly say that an article such as Age of Enlightenment (one among thousands) would be better served with all the photos in a gallery? Further, the argument that we should ALL consider users of a portable device is not a good argument let alone an argument.

As far as the Revolutionary Law, there wasn't a different law (yes, they had different "eyewash" numbers) and an attendant poster for banks, schools, another for factories, hotels, restaurants, residences, sugar mills, and another one for cemeteries. EVERYTHING was nationalized, stolen, at once. In your article "Castro announced in a speech to the Restaurant and Hotel Workers Federation.." well, who exactly was the Restaurant and Hotel Workers Federation? Where do you mention that they were the owners of the hotel?

At any rate, I put a block on the pages this morning (sorry, I thought you were a vandal), I will wait a few days for you to reconsider, However, if you don't do the appropriate research regarding the use of the photographs, I will take the issue up with an administrator. Kind regards.

Images make Wikipedia more informative, accessible, and professional.

In general, when working with images:

DO: Review the image style guide and use policy. Give context with captions and alt text. Try to find at least one image for each article. Look for free images. Clean up images: crop, color-correct, etc. Create and upload your own images. Use the best file format for each image. Use objects for scale where helpful.

DON’T: Don't upload non-free images. Don't use images in place of tables or charts. Don't use images or galleries excessively. Don't add images that are not relevant. Don't flip faces, text, or works of art. Don't set fixed image sizes. Don't sandwich text between two images. Don't refer to images by their placement.

I appreciate that you're trying to help, but titling a section in Spanish, like "Ley revolucionaria", is very confusing for English speakers, and it's also overly specific. It is clearer to have the section be about the Revolution in general. The photo of the sign doesn't make clear how it's in any away related to the hotel. The first paragraph states, with a proper source, that the hotel belonged to the pension fund of the catering workers' union. There is value to including a few photos at key points in extremely long articles, like the one you mentioned, but this is a short article, I can't see how it helps to have photos in the middle of it.jamesluckard (talk) 01:47, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Hotel Nacional de Cuba

Osvaldo, I see you've also undone the corrections I made to the Hotel Nacional page. As with the Hotel Habana Libre, please do not delete the gallery. Again, adding sections is perfectly fine, but they need sub-sections, every part of the history cannot be its own section. They also need to be in a logical and chronological order. In addition, you deleted random words throughout, such as the words "historic hotel" in the first sentence. I have restored them. Also, I don't think Wikipedia rules allow the extensive quote you have about the Taganana Hill, or the historical photos, which may be copyrighted. However, if you'll notice, I did not delete the text or photos, because I don't feel it's my place to delete anything another user adds. If someone else nominates it for deletion though, they will probably be within the rules. Osvaldo, If you really want to delete the galleries, go ahead. I'm not sure who is helped by deleting them, but I won't fight you on that. But please do not delete text from the articles for no reason, and please leave the organization with sections and sub-sections, in chronological order, it is very confusing otherwise. Putting the lead of an article into a hatnote template would be an example of this, per WP:LEGITHAT. Among other reasons not to do this, it stops the text from appearing when a user tries to print the article out. Generally speaking, if an edit causes an article to look significantly different from all other Wikipedia articles (even if you think it looks better!), it's probably going against the manual of style. --Lord Belbury (talk) 15:59, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

The FOCSA Building was named after the contracting company Fomento de Obras y Construcciones, Sociedad Anónima.

but "printable version" of FOCSA Building starts with History and does not show the hatnote...Same thing with Barrio de San Lázaro, Havana...help!ovA_165443 (talk) 16:54, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

That's how it's meant to work: a Wikipedia:Hatnote is mainly just for linking to other articles, like the "other uses" and "dog breed" links at the top of Havana. It's expected that the reader wouldn't want that kind of "did you mean?" navigation actually printed out, if they were making a physical copy of the article.

What are you trying to add to the articles with these hatnote templates? Are you trying to write something like:

This page is about the building in Havana. For the contracting company, see Fomento de Obras y Construcciones, Sociedad Anónima.

Or are you just aiming for a better visual look by indenting and italicising the lead sections? Or something else? --Lord Belbury (talk) 16:58, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Okay. Remember that the opening section of an article is meant to be "an introduction to the article and a summary of its most important contents" that "should briefly summarize the most important points covered in an article in such a way that it can stand on its own as a concise version of the article" (MOS:LEAD) - if it's a substantial article, the lead section should be more than just a single sentence. --Lord Belbury (talk) 17:30, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Havana Architecture

Thank you for your drawings of the Havana Cathedral and other materials posted. As a first time visitor to Havana this month, I found this fascinating. I've never been to Europe so this is the first original Baroque building I have seen. Has anyone that you know of drawn 3d models of the cathedral?

I'd love to come back to Havana and have an architectural tour, if that were ever available. I'll definitely come back.

Hello, I don't know firsthand of any cathedral 3-d studies. I visited Havana in 2017 (grew up in Havana) and unfortunately did not go into the cathedral because it was closed. The seminary around the corner is of similar construction San Carlos and San Ambrosio Seminary. Unfortunately, many of the buildings in Havana are destroyed as is much of the City. I was particularly interested in Plaza del Vapor, Havana, however, the revolutionary government tore it down in 1959 which was a huge loss for Havana. I stayed at the FOCSA Building for ten days which was quite a find and did many of the drawings and diagrams. Also of interest are the Radiocentro CMQ Building by the same architect, and the Edificio del Seguro Médico, Havana by Quintana. I am sorry, the mistake was publishing the page before a chance to rewrite, you have made your point, well taken, bravo! Wikipedia states, "you may rewrite this page without "copyright-infringing material." I have admitted it, said I am sorry, was my mistake to go against Wikipedia internal policy, and attempted to fix it which I am allowed to do as per internal policy; what further explanations are you looking for? Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources you might read the law on fair use; Wikipedia seems to needlessly have made an outlaw of every editor by taking away their protection of federal law!? However, can you please clarify why you feel Wikipedia, or I, are NOT protected per 17 U.S. Code S. 107 when copying content? And/or can you please explain why you believe "Noncommercial, nonprofit use is (NOT) presumptively fair use"? Please define "content from a non-free external source"? Why such content is exempt from 17 U.S. Code S. 107 and/or "transformation"? Finally, since you threatened me ("you may expect to lose your editing privileges in this project without further warning.), please be so kind to explain to me why you feel that Google is protected when copying entire books, Authors Guild, Inc. v. Ignoring the remainder of your post here, which has little bearing on whatever internal rules Wikipedia uses; "fair use" does not apply when you don't indicate that you are quoting another text (directly or in translation) but are presenting text as your own words (even if you add the original as a source through a reference). As for your excuses, admittance of error, "before I had a chance to rewrite"... you seem to ignore that I had to repeatedly explain why it was a copyvio, while you pretended innocence and hid behind "Earwig says 0%", instead of immediately starting with at least admitting that it was a translation you had posted. Your "before I had a chance to rewrite" would perhaps have been believable if you didn't need to scramble yesterday to remove similar copyvios [1] which you had added in January 2022[2]. This makes it clear that this isn't a case of "oh, I inserted these copyvios but was going to remove or rewrite them real soon" but a case of "oops, I'm caught yet again, quick make up some excuses while I hide older problems". This is a private website, if they want to impose a rule that you may be banned if you use the word "and" in a post they are free to do so. Another thing you may not do in this project is direct personal remarks at other editors, as you did in your post immediately above this. Please immediately strike those unacceptable remarks (use <s> .... </s> to achieve that). Civility is one of the five pillars of this project; like our copyright policy, it is not negotiable – you either respect it or find something different to do with your time.

Rather than chopping logic over federal law, it would be helpful if you would start to compile, here on this page, a list of all articles where you have translated directly from a non-free Spanish-language source, identifying the source that you took the stuff from in each case.

There is no such violation except in Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Please stop repeating "rewrite this article from scratch" ad nauseam, that is the problem. Google is protected when copying entire books, Authors Guild, Inc. v. Google, Inc. but Wikipedia editors presumably lose the protection of the same Federal law!? In its attempt to avoid a lawsuit by creating a policy "developed by the community" it voids and invalidates the protection of 17 US Code § 107 to all editors. Someday we may read: "if you were a Wikipedia editor you are part of the biggest compensation settlement in the history of publishing." ovA_165443 (talk) 15:14, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

Somebody writing about the Cuartel de Milicias should be able to safely quote the text of your Wikipedia article, attributing your words to you, without unwittingly infringing the copyright of a Spanish publishing house.

I don't think anybody is accusing you of having broken US copyright law, only that you've broken Wikipedia's WP:COPYVIO policy. You're right that Wikipedia could likely host unlimited copyrighted content with impunity if it wanted to, but it doesn't want to, it wants to have its WP:COPYVIO policy, and as such, the copyrighted text you've added will have to be rewritten. You have not established yet where I violated any law but a private corporate policy which necessarily comes under U.S. law. Nor have you shown how an internal "copyright policy" is compatible with U.S. Copyright law; mainly the Copyright Act of 1976 as 17 U.S.C. Section 107, or have you shown that Wikipedia is in fact not violating a different type of U.S. law when it restricts and/or prohibits access to the law? Having a corporate policy stating that Cubans cannot sit at the counter is against the law but why is this not clear to you that fair use is a legal doctrine that "promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances". Fair use permits "comment, teaching, scholarship, and research" and how are these endeavors incompatible with Wikipedia? I am not combative, belligerent, uncooperative, obtuse, quarrelsome, or radical as you imply and I genuinely have questions regarding the law. Osvaldo valdes, as has already been explained above, your personal interpretation of US copyright law has exactly zero relevance here. All that matters to us is that you must understand, and agree to conform to, the copyright policy of this project. If you're not interested in doing that then your career here is over, which I believe would be a loss to the project.

If you do want to continue editing, please start by listing, here on this page, each and every article where you have translated even small amounts of content from non-free Spanish-language sources (and of course list the sources themselves also). That will greatly assist with the clean-up of the 179 articles that need to be checked, and will also improve your chances of being allowed to edit again. I am new in Wikipedia ( editors mode). I am not sure if the article and photos related were added by you. In any case. Regarding the photograph which have the following text: Havana police at the door of apartment 201. The policeman with the glasses appears to be Lt. Colonel Esteban Ventura Novo. It called my attention the mentioned officer with sun glasses is ranked as Captain, so I suspected he was not Ventura Novo; who by the time of the events was a Lt Colonel and was no longer using uniform on daily bases. I looked in Internet and discovered this web: https://www.cubaperiodistas.cu/index.php/2017/04/la-masacre-de-humboldt-7/ Here the author mentions Captain Glery Hernández from 6th Police Station.
