Disambiguation link notification for August 24 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Greenways Road, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Adyar (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Your signature edit

Hello. In my opinion your customized signature violates the policy WP:SIGAPP. A signature should not stand out so much that it draws the eye away from the text. Signatures are primarily to identify you and provide a user page link, not to show off one's creativity. I hope you will tone down your signature, and I would suggest dropping the non-white background although this is not required. Thanks! ―Mandruss  15:11, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I am new to HTML and this is all i managed to make. I did this because I noticed that they said that it should represent my name. So, a crappy Pokéball should do. Does it not..? Give me more feedback. I'd love it. I am new to HTML and only learned in the like past 5 hours or so. Oshawott_12 ==()== Talk to me! 15:16, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
In addition, it follows all the rules and doesn’t seem to flashy to me. Just a red-and-white rectangle, should be all right. No too seemingly bright colours or so. Also, I need help on how to make a semi-circle for this so it looks more like a Pokéball.Oshawott_12 ==()== Talk to me! 15:24, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
I did this because I noticed that they said that it should represent my name. I'm not sure what you mean by that. Your actual name has nothing to do with it. If you mean username, the standard default signature shows your username so it wasn't necessary to do any customization to accomplish that. My recommendation is to avoid both border and background, like mine. Then you can play with fonts and colors. For colors see MOS:ONWHITE. Don't make the font so small that it's hard to read, and I suggest making it the same size as normal text. The important things are (1) provide a link to your user page and probably your user talk page, (2) be legible even to those with vision problems, and (3) don't be distracting to the eye.
it follows all the rules Well the rules are extremely vague and leave a lot to opinion and interpretation. For example, the nutshell at SIGAPP says, "Make sure that your signature is easily readable and does not cause disruption to other editors." It doesn't say what is easily readable (to whom? easily readable to you doesn't mean easily readable to everybody) or what causes disruption to other editors. If you are not convinced, I can't force you to see things my way, and many other users have signatures that are over the line in my opinion.
I'm old and I have no clue what a Pokéball is. ―Mandruss  15:38, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's a Pokémon thing. And, uh, WP:UACS. I'll try and make the font bigger, but I already tried and the next size of 14 seems too big for me. Oshawott_12 ==()== Talk to me! 15:46, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

You might make it less disruptive by removing the border  pythoncoder  (talk | contribs) 18:06, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the border is not just distracting, it obscures text on the lines above and below: this is not acceptable. The red background, besides being distracting, is a violation of WP:CONTRAST. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:15, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK, I’ve given it a darker red and a reduced border. How can I improve on the red? Oshawott_12 ==()== Talk to me! 01:20, 22 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
By visiting this page and moving the sliders in the middle box until the right-hand box shows "YES" against "WCAG 2 AA Compliant", ideally against "WCAG 2 AAA Compliant" as well. Then read off the six-character hex value at the top of the middle box, and use that instead of the DB1515 that you are currently using. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 07:56, 22 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Even with improved contrast, the text at that size would not be "easily readable" to me. That's the problem with borders, or one of the problems. If you make the text large enough to read, the whole thing including borders is too large. Please consider expressing your interest in Pokémon on your user page, rather than at the end of each and every comment you post in a Wikipedia talk space. ―Mandruss  08:31, 22 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
But that’s what a signature is for! Just like RedRose64 has a rose, I have a Pokéball! I’ll add it on my userpage then if Oshawott isn’t obvious enough. As for RedRose64, I’ll be finding the colour codes. Thank you for your information.Oshawott_12 ==()== Talk to me! 09:55, 22 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Many editors would disagree that a signature is "for" personal expression of any kind. Rather, it's for identifying the user and providing a link to their user page. There is a large segment of the editing community who think English Wikipedia should get rid of the ability to customize signatures, and the reason for that is that too many editors abuse the almost complete freedom afforded them by the uselessly vague signature "policy". I'm becoming one of them despite having a custom signature myself.
Just like RedRose64 has a rose, I have a Pokéball! That's a poor comparison. Redrose64's signature lacks most of the issues of your signature, specifically legibility problems (text too small) and visual distraction (signature too "bold"). (If you can't see that your signature stands out far more than any of the others in this thread—even after shrinking—you're blind.) If you could express Pokémon interest without those issues, I would have no objection. ―Mandruss  10:31, 22 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Here. I'll try taking the border out later and use a red highlight colour. Will you review it? Oshawott_12 ==()== Talk to me! 11:58, 22 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'll keep offering my opinions until you ask me to stop or I get tired.  Mandruss  12:10, 22 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
I admire you for your will to help me. However, it has been increasingly difficult to find a colour that complies. I've found this colour, #FF4000, that looks more like red but still looks better than others. If you can suggest a better one, I'd gladly use it. Thank you Oshawott_12 ==()== Talk to me! 02:40, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
The red at File:Pokeball.png is #FF0000. Black (#000) on #FF0000 gives contrast 5.252 which is above the minimum. That gives Oshawott 12 ==()== Talk to me!. To make a color: attribute work for link text, the span has to be within the piped part of the link code. I also removed the underscores since they are not actually part of your username, and I used {{nowrap}} to prevent a line break within the signature. This is as much help as I'm prepared to offer for a signature that I feel violates the policy. Good luck. ―Mandruss  04:36, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, Mandruss. I will use what you suggested then. Many thanks for your help on this. This issue is resolved then? Oshawott 12 ==()== Talk to me! 05:12, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Define "resolved". All this discussion has gotten us from this: Oshawott_12 ==()== Talk to me! to this: Oshawott 12 ==()== Talk to me!. We addressed a contrast issue but the distraction issue remains. I expect you will get occasional comments from editors who are aware of the policy, have some feel for human factors as it relates to online written communication, and care enough to come here and complain. But I'm done, so it's "resolved" for me. ―Mandruss  05:23, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hey, we've all done good. Let's leave this alone then. Anyone still dissatisfied can continue with this conversation. I'll leave this alone then, thanks. Oshawott 12 ==()== Talk to me! 05:26, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

My mistake, I miscoded the background as #FF4000, forgetting to change what you had previously. I couldn't understand why it looked so orange on my computer. I meant to match the red at File:Pokeball.png, which is #FF0000, giving: Oshawott 12 ==()== Talk to me!. ―Mandruss  18:50, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh noes. I'll fix it. I thought the orange would be better and look good. Thanks for the suggestions though. Thank you very much.

Your signature, again. edit

You need to either remove or change your custom signature to be in compliance with WP:ACCESS. I'm only mildly vision impared and I cannot parse it. Someone with color blindness or a more severe acuity imparment than I could never read it. Having a custom signature is not required. Compliance with ACCESS is. John from Idegon (talk) 15:10, 28 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps add this to the “Your signature” part? You should do that before I continue arguing. @Mandruss I need help.... again. Oshawott 12 ==()== Talk to me! 15:16, 28 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
I made it a subsection of the "Your signature" part. That should be adequate with a minimum of change.
@John from Idegon: The signature is in compliance with ACCESS (see MOS:COLOR). WCAG AA specifies minimum contrast of 4.5:1, and Oshawott's black-on-red tests at 5.252:1. I think you're unlikely to win that one. FTR, my objection has been to the visual distraction of such a bold signature, and I've accepted a loss there lacking a lot of support. ―Mandruss  15:48, 28 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
I can read it on a computer monitor. I cannot on a phone or tablet. And I'm sorry, but if even one editor is complaining about something you do not have to have, that should be enough for you to change it. The purpose of your username signature is so people can clearly identify you and use the links to your pages. It is not a "Means of self expression", something that is entirely overvalued in today's world. If anybody is having a problem using your signature for its intended purposes, you should change it. The sun is at the center of the galaxy, not you. I never have understood why we allow this anyway. It's something that serves no purpose in improving the encyclopedia at all, and there are not just a few conflicts over it. John from Idegon (talk) 16:08, 28 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
@John from Idegon: I'm with you on much of that, but we are in a small minority. Witness the open RfC proposing a bright-line rule against "highlighting" (non-white background) in signatures, which is headed for a fail largely because a majority of the vocal subset of the community feels differently than we do about self-expression (and/or have no instinct for human factors). We see the very same priorities applied to things like userboxes, giving little relative weight to considerations competing with self-expression. even one editor is complaining about something you do not have to have, that should be enough for you to change it. I have seen no community support for such a sentiment, and I'm damn well not going to change my signature because one lone editor says that they have trouble reading it. ―Mandruss  16:23, 28 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

I came here to make the same request. Your signature is aggressive (at best). There are many ways you can set yourself apart without burning out your fellow collaborator's retinas. Please?-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 18:34, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Just in case either of you missed it, this page is full of discussion about this sig. The user corrected a contrast problem, which is the only somewhat bright line that exists in the policy, and decided they were done. It remains to be seen how many editors must complain before there is a significant change made. A recent attempt to disallow all non-white backgrounds failed.[1]Mandruss  18:40, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Well, I (for one) still can't read it. Where is it stated that the contrast problem was corrected? I see a number of experiments for various shades, but the signature used on the thread immediately above has bad contrast. The background colour used is #FF0000 which for the normal (Vector skin) unvisited link colour (which is #0645AD), this gives a contrast ratio of 2.132 which is a long way from being WCAG 2 AA Compliant, and for the normal visited link colour (#0B0080), this gives a contrast ratio of 3.96 which is also not WCAG 2 AA Compliant: although it's better, this is still below the 4.5 minimum. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:16, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Redrose64: In all of the sigs in the thread above they are overriding the default link color to #000. 000:FF0000 = 5.252:1.[2] That you (for one) still can't read it is not insignificant, but it's not addressed by the somewhat bright line of the policy. ―Mandruss  22:34, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't asking because I thought it a violated bright line policy. I was asking because it is kind of obnoxious to other editors in the discussion, and I assumed that once Oshawott realized this, they would want to change to something that annoys his peers less. --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:38, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
I understand. As I indicated, the objections to date had not been enough, and whether the two new ones will tip the scales for Oshawatt (who really wants to express his Pokemon interest in his signature) remains to be seen. ―Mandruss  22:42, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
So how about you guys all pitch in on finding me a new red colour? Oshawott 12 ==()== Talk to me! 22:54, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
I personally would like to see you forgo both the non-white background and the border. Then you could choose one or two text colors from MOS:ONWHITE to make it less boring. Then express your Pokemon interest on your user page. ―Mandruss  23:09, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm not asking you to alter the particular red color. I'm asking you to get rid of the box, get rid of the dark background color, and just select a less glaring signature. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:22, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Got an idea. How about I make the text on the red background white? Would that work? Oshawott 12 ==()== Talk to me! 23:33, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
That wouldn't really solve my issue; it would still be really glaring. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:35, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Concur. Never mind that it would be below minimum recommended contrast.[3]Mandruss  23:36, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Considering the purely contrast aspect here, darkening the background by 17 notches to #EE0000 would give a contrast ratio of 4.53 which is now WCAG 2 AA Compliant. It's slightly less in-your-face too. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:53, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

I didn't get one either. There are two possibilities for what went wrong in this edit: (i) it didn't like the level 3 heading; (ii) it didn't like the presence of somebody else's signature; (iii) it didn't like the timestamp, which is more than fourteen hours earlier than the time that the edit was made. As regards the earlier attempts:
  • This one failed because it wasn't signed
  • This failed because it's just a signature, no new links to other user pages were added
  • This failed because it was not a new post
  • This also failed because it was not a new post; and it's also a nonexistent user
  • This one failed because it's an amendment to an existing link
By contrast, this one probably worked, because you satisfied all of the criteria.
One thing you could do is to go to Preferences → Notifications and enable "Successful mentions", but this won't pick up past actions, it'll only work going forward, when it might send you notifications like "Your mention of Redrose64 was sent." You could also enable "Failed mentions" but that doesn't do what you might think - it won't have told you that the above attempts didn't work, it's mainly for when you try to notify a nonexistent user - such as Whatamidoing. In such cases you are sent a notification like "Your mention of Whatamidoing was not sent because the user was not found." --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:01, 30 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Would it be possible for you to make the ==( part of the link to your userpage? It may seem pointless, but that way people can use a CSS rule to alter the appearance of your signature, which should decrease future complaints. Hi there SoWhy, this is Oshawott 12, the person you adopted a couple weeks ago. I have been IP blocked beacuse I was using a shared IP with a vandal. Is there any possible way to fix this faster? I was just editing an article when a popup told me this. I have placed the template, but is there anything I can do while waiting? I think the block was placed on my school's IP, so I was caught up in the block.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message edit

Hello, Oshawott 12. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

AlexTheWhovian edit

I suggest you take a look at the edits to the article "Demons of the Punjab" where you will see that I added correct, sourced, cited data. AlexTheWhovian undid that edit and inserted an incorrect, unsourced, uncited figure. They have subsequently stated that they simply made a 'typo'. When you undo edits, that's not a typo. That's an active decision. I reinstated my accurate edit. Sebastian James, who also exclusively edits the same pages as AlexTheWhovian, then undid it again. Between them, they have continually undone the edits I have made, despite the fact that my edits were accurate and accurately sourced, unlike the edits made by AlexTheWhovian who inserted incorrect, unsupported data. AlexTheWhovian then started making threats on my talk page. Twice threatening me with being blocked. Despite starting and escalating an edit war, AlexTheWhovian accuses me of being the instigator. They then accused me of making an edit that they suggest I should have "made in the first place". I did make that edit in the first place. AlexTheWhovian and Sebastian James undid it. Three times each. The abuse is intolerable. I apprecaited AlexTheWhovian believes they are the guardian of all Dr Who knowledge, but the fact remains that they undid a correct edit simply to insert incorrect data and as such, begun an edit war to demonstrate their superiority. AlexTheWhovian accuses me of incorrect editing and only being part of wikipedia to make trouble. I'm sure if you look at my correct and correctly supported edits compared to the "typos" made by AlexTheWhovian, you will wish to take action.27.131.36.174 (talk 03:15, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Boing's question edit

Before you try answering Boing!'s question, refer yourself to WP:NOPUNISH for the policy against punitive blocks (i.e. "he deserves" blocks). While you're at it, refer yourself to WP:AGF and WP:ASPERSIONS for "we don't know if he's honest about everything yet". I can't read Boing!'s mind, but I'm near certain that's what's on it (and not from a strictly policy perspective, but from a "being a good person" one as well).   Interface administrator changes

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Thanks for creating Vexxed.

A New Page Patroller JC7V7DC5768 just tagged the page as having some issues to fix, and wrote this note for you:

Good start, you have to fix the citation error for reference 2

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can reply over here and ping me. Or, for broader editing help, you can talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Administrators' newsletter – January 2019 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

  Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

  Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
