Hoods Tower Museum

Your edit on this gave me no sense, therefore I reverted it. Could you explian what did you mean by Sinhala navy?--L Manju (talk) 07:54, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

@L Manju: It was a response to this edit by you which suggests that being a naval museum means that Sinhala should come before Tamil.--Obi2canibe (talk) 15:05, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
I missed the fact that you'd changed the Sinhala translation which I've corrected now.--Obi2canibe (talk) 15:09, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

ANI Experiences survey

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Obi2canibe, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Obi2canibe, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Disambiguation link notification for January 2

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Oriol Junqueras, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Student union (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Sri Sabaratnam

I noticed that you reverted my edits on this page, but I don't understand your comment or why you think that I "have only confused the issue." I'm a member of the Wikipedia Typo Team, so I originally came to the page because it had a double 'of'. Keeping in mind that Wikipedia is for a worldwide audience, and also noting that The New York Times, which has had more coverage of the fighting in Sri Lanka than any American newspaper, has never used the terms TELO and LTTE (I just checked their archives to be sure), these abbreviations should not appear in Wikipedia. They are jargon "insider's" terms, and if anything, replacing them with real names makes an article easier to read, not more confusing. UK newspapers explain these abbreviations every time they use them or use short names, such as "Tamil Tigers." I strongly urge you to reconsider your use of the jargon abbreviations so that this Wikipedia page is more easily read by a general and worldwide audience. (I hope that the pages on related subjects that also terms get changed, too.) That's the purpose of an encyclopedia. Thank you for reading this.

Ira

Ira Leviton (talk) 22:08, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

@Ira Leviton: I appreciate all that you and others do in cleaning up Wikipedia articles (it's an endless task) but you are wrong in this matter. LTTE and TELO are not jargons or insider terms, they are acronyms/abbreviations which were defined the article so no reader should be confused. Acronyms/abbreviations are used widely, we even use them at Wikipedia: WP:ABC.--Obi2canibe (talk) 19:19, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

Category:First Secretaries of the Parliament of Catalonia

In reference to this edit in my talk, you know WP:CIVIL is a Wikipedia policy, right? Impru20 (talk) 22:52, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

@Impru20: Are you going to acknowledge that you got it wrong?--Obi2canibe (talk) 22:59, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
I could've gotten it wrong, but that gives you no right to insult me and call me a fool. Impru20 (talk) 23:02, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
@Impru20: Could've? That's no acknowledgement. If you hadn't been stalking me you wouldn't have made such a foolish mistake. Because of your mistake the history of Category:First Secretaries of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia shows that I created it. I did not. I created Category:First Secretaries of the Parliament of Catalonia but according to its history I've never edited it. You've messed up big.--Obi2canibe (talk) 23:09, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
Stalking you? You should have your facts straight, pal, because now you're going too far. I've both Pere Navarro and Miquel Iceta in my watchlist, so that's why I saw you modified these and why I thought that the actual intended category was Category:First Secretaries of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia. I've no issue in saying that was an error, so you trying to make an enormous case out of it would be funny if it weren't because it's a disgusting ignoral of good faith.
It's currently pointless who created Category:First Secretaries of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia, no one is going to give you or me a prize or punishment for it (just as it shows you "created it", it shows how I moved it. Simple and nothing wrong with it). You should cool down your growingly uncivil behaviour. Impru20 (talk) 23:19, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
@Impru20:Is that an acknowledgement you got it wrong? I can't tell, what with all the threats. If you hadn't jumped in with both feet, as you did with Template:Generalitat de Catalunya, maybe you wouldn't have made such a cock up. Who confuses Parliament of Catalonia with Socialists' Party of Catalonia?--Obi2canibe (talk) 23:25, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
I'm not going to enter into any provocation. Take a look at WP:UNCIVIL, WP:IUC, WP:NPA and WP:SORRY to make yourself familiar with Wikipedia policies on the issue. Have a nice day. Impru20 (talk) 23:33, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Obi2canibe, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!

The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Ministries of Sri Lanka

Any updates on the edits to those articles? I notice most of them havent been edited since I last did in September.

@Obi2canibe: Yeah, don't think I'm going to touch those either. I can't see a point in maintaining a page that gets invalidated every couple years when various ministries are split and mashed together at will. Can't think of a better way to do this either. - ක - (talk) 05:51, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

New Page Review Newsletter No.10

Hello Obi2canibe, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Paid editing

  • Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

  • While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.

News

  • The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. The Signpost is one of the best ways to stay up date with news and new developments - please consider subscribing to it. All editors of Wikipedia and associated projects are welcome to submit articles on any topic for consideration by the The Signpost's editorial team for the next issue.

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam

Categorising organisations like this is very difficult, but generally the term Paramilitary seems helpful to characterise various types of unofficial military organisations. See Category:Paramilitary organizations by country "Militant" in most of the world doesn't have a very precise meaning. Can we use both terms? Rathfelder (talk) 13:08, 8 April 2018 (UTC)

@Rathfelder: My understanding of paramilitaries is that they are armed groups that work alongside official security forces and this is what Paramilitary says. It should not include armed groups fighting the government unless local sources describe them as paramilitaries (e.g. the IRA is described as paramilitary in British sources even though they fought against the government). I see that Category:Paramilitary organizations by country takes a different view in that it includes all armed groups, including those fighting the government.
In Sri Lanka the term paramilitary is specifically used for groups that work alongside the security forces (e.g. EPDP, TMVP). It would be hard to find any source that describes the LTTE as a paramilitary group - they are usually described as militant or rebel.
I don't won't get into a long debate about this so if you want to include both terms please go ahead.--Obi2canibe (talk) 13:24, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
My impression is that the use of all these terms is pretty arbitrary and varies by time and place. I'm concerned principally to link all these articles about organisations to the countries they operate in, as the vast majority weren't. But by attaching the paramilitary category to Category:Factions in the Sri Lankan Civil War perhaps we can avoid the problem. Rathfelder (talk) 15:51, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
@Rathfelder: Seems a fair compromise.--Obi2canibe (talk) 22:31, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Reverting of edits post-ANI thread

Soon after my participation in User:RitzAgasti's ANI thread against you, it seems like you have intentionally gone through my recent contributions and undid a bunch of my edits: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. I've mentioned "intentionally" because you were 'vigilant' enough to have even revert edits in an article that I had created very shortly before your reverts (i.e. an article without any other watchers).

Looking at the diffs of your 'reverts', it is obvious that it was not done with best intentions. Your edits removed entire "See also" sections quoting only "WP:ALSO", removed single descriptive images that indeed enriched the article by quoting only "WP:NOTGALLERY", among others shown in the diffs above. I will be adding back the images and see also sections, and also some other formatting for whitespace/overlapping (such as {{Clear}}). Rehman 09:54, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

@Rehman: I'm afraid you're getting paranoid. All of the above articles are on my watchlist or were alerted to me by their appearance on WP:LK.
It's a pity I am having to explain basic stuff to an admin but that's where we are.
  • WP:NOTGALLERY clearly states that "Wikipedia is neither a mirror nor a repository of links, images, or media files". I also suggest you read WP:IG which states "a gallery is not a tool to shoehorn images into an article". Adding images that you have taken to article simply to showcase yourself is unbecoming of any editor but particularly so of an admin. The images that I removed, many of which were in gallery sections rather in amongst text, do not add any encyclopedic value to the articles.
  • Saying in your edit summaries that my edits were unexplained removal of content is not only a lie but also unworthy of someone in an admin role. It is becoming clearer and clearer that you are not suitable for the role.--Obi2canibe (talk) 17:51, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
Regarding the "basic stuff" you mentioned above:
  1. WP:ALSO also states "Whether a link belongs in the "See also" section is ultimately a matter of editorial judgment and common sense". The links in the see also section are very helpful for speedier navigation, as the other links are at the very bottom of the article, and are more often collapsed by default; not easily accessible, especially on mobile devices. If it were directly linked in the article body, then your argument can be considered valid. But that is not the case.
  2. Please explain, how is this not adding encyclopedic value to the article?
Rehman 02:36, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
I'm glad that I've forced you to read up on Wikipedia policies. You're welcome.
1. The articles under discussion are very short. Common sense would suggest that you don't need to list articles which are already listed in navigation templates. Why do you think that WP:ALSO states "As a general rule, the "See also" section should not repeat links that appear in the article's body or its navigation boxes"?
The only reason you want them listed separately in the See also section is because you worked on these articles. As with spamming articles with photos you've taken, you are subverting Wikipedia policies to promote yourself. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It is not a place to promote one-self in order to beef up one's CV and LinkedIn profile.
2. This article is very short, almost a stub, with just five sentences of text. It already has an image in the infobox. What encyclopedic value does a second image add?--Obi2canibe (talk) 11:46, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
For the sake of a clear conversation, I will ignore your usual personal attacks for now.
Stop dodging questions. You initially stated that the images you removed does not add any encyclopedic value. And I asked you clearly, how is this not adding encyclopedic value to the article? Answer my question.

Capital Maharaja

Thanks for message, but I don't think it's as simple as that. It's true that my attention was drawn to this when checking the contributions of an obvious undeclared paid editor, so I've looked at the version as last edited by you which still had major problems.

  • All the text outside the first paragraph was unreferenced. That paragraph had two references, on now dead, the other a news item about an attack on MTV studios not even mentioned in the text. So no references.
  • The notability guidelines for organisations and companies have been updated. The primary criteria has five components that must be evaluated separately and independently to determine if it is met:
  1. significant coverage in
  2. independent,
  3. multiple,
  4. reliable,
  5. secondary sources.
Note that an individual source must meet all four criteria to be counted towards notability. It's not enough to say a company meets Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies), the refs must prove it.
  • The article has been tagged for weasel words and "wording that promotes the subject in a subjective manner without imparting real information" for the past three years.

If you think it's worth it, I'll restore it to a draft for you to improve, but bearing in mind that it's effectively unreferenced, and therefore doesn't meet the new notability criteria and has been tagged for tone issues, you might do better to rewrite from scratch. Your call, but I'm not prepared to restore an unreferenced article back to article space Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:47, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

OK, I will start from scratch.--Obi2canibe (talk) 12:05, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
