Agrius and Oreius edit

Agrius and Oreius was created to detail more information about those humanoid bears. Plus, they had made media appearances in The Sea of Monsters (though the film version replaced them with a manticore). It's best that their pages be left alone. If you have any objections, start an articles for deletion page for it so that the page's fate can be discussed. --Rtkat3 (talk) 16:09, 22 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

My thanks for your quick reply. As you may have gathered I'm a rather new editor so I'm not entirely sure what you mean. I've highlighted it for deletion by adding a proposed deletion bar at the top of the article. A discussion is also being had on the Talk:Polyphonte page. Is there something further I need to do? In my view just as much coverage of the humanoid bears is given in the Polyphonte page, and specifically within the Agrius and Oreius section, and hence a separate, dedicated page is unnecessary. I see your point about the film appearance however this could easily be inserted into the bottom of the Polyphonte page in order that the files be successfully merged. Your GA nomination of Acantha edit

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Acantha you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of J Milburn -- J Milburn (talk) 19:40, 5 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Talk:Acantha/GA1 edit

Hi- I'm afraid I have closed this review for the reasons I have explained. I hope you don't feel I've been unfair, and I'm certainly happy to talk it over with you/work out the best options for the article (and others like it). I applaud you for taking on this kind of topic, though- I'm always struck by the fact that some of these stories seem to be common knowledge to the Ancient Greeks (at least, the way authors will refer to them without explanation suggests as much) but are as good as lost for us. J Milburn (talk) 19:50, 5 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi J Milburn, thanks for taking on the review! No don’t worry I understand your decision. I think though that between the two of us the problems you’ve identified can be speedily resolved. If you don't mind I'd really appreciate talking through where to go from here. Perhaps it might be a good idea if I try to make some changes tonight and I'll drop you a message when I'm done... Nyctimene (talk) 20:23, 5 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
No problem. In addition to the length (which leads to worries about completeness and whether the topic is worthy of an article as such), the real worry is original research- it seems like what you're doing here is drawing your own conclusions after examining the primary sources, which is not appropriate for a Wikipedia article. J Milburn (talk) 20:26, 5 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Response edit

Hi J Milburn! Again thank you for taking the time to review this article and for your continued interest in its improvement. I hope I have addressed the general comments section to your satisfaction. The only one outstanding is the nymph bar which we can talk about further if you wish. The original research issue was well pointed out. Looking back I think it was an entirely fair criticism. I’ve tried to rewrite the paragraph though in such a way that all statements are strictly factual and backed up by citations.

You suggest that perhaps there is more information on the topic. I used Google Scholar as you suggested and came up with a few extra references. I really believe though that I have now exhausted the available material. If you can find further sources which would improve the article though I would of course be delighted.

Now for the most difficult objection, the size of the article. This raises three independent questions. First, does Acantha merit an article at all? Second, should the article be merged? Third, can such a small article attain good article status? As for notability Acantha is mentioned in a whole host of independently verifiable sources. I think, therefore, that she clearly passes the WP:N requirements. Now for the second issue, merger. I must confess your suggestion that this article be merged with the Acanthus (plant) article is interesting. You are also very kind when you state suggest I could probably do the topic justice. I have to say though that, after thinking about it, I really believe the articles should remain separate. Almost every plant and animal has some myth associated with it yet I don’t think it would be appropriate to include a mythology section in every article. From my perspective I think people searching for the plant are probably botanists and gardeners with little interest in the associated myths. Similarly people, like me, who like reading about myths aren't very interested in botanical information. Given all this I think it would be inappropriate to apply the WP:SIZERULE which is, after all, simply a rule of thumb. At last we come to the final issue, good article status. You are quite right to point out DYKs have a word limit however good articles don’t. WP:WGN makes clear that WP:SIZE is not a criterion. Interestingly even shorter articles than Acantha such as, M-105 (Michigan highway) and Cliche (Hush Hush) have received good article status in the past.

If there is more work to be done please let me know and I'll do my very best to address your concerns. Similarly if you disagree with anything I've said please get in touch so we can try and sort something out. Again thanks for your all your help, here's to renomination in the near future! Nyctimene (talk) 17:28, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

(Quick reply- just going out.) This does raise some interesting questions. Cliche (Hush Hush) certainly isn't a GA- the symbol was added out-of-process. Whether M-105 (Michigan highway) should have been promoted is a separate issue. I admit that it's difficult to see how a shorter-than-DYK article would automatically fail the GA criteria, assuming all published material on a subject had been consulted. What I will say is that there does still seem to be a degree of editorialising in the article which may run foul of OR guidelines- for instance, which source claims that authors have "proved unable, or unwilling, to provide classical references"? Or are they all authors who, in your (probably perfectly reasonable) opinion, have "proved unable, or unwilling, to provide classical references"? J Milburn (talk) 18:59, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks J Milburn. Interesting, I had no idea Cliche (Hush Hush) hadn't gone through the proper process, good spot. Anyway the article was just an example, I can provide others if you like. The basic point is that there are plenty of small articles which, because they exhaust the available information, are worthy of GA status. As for your point about OR I see what you're saying. What I would say is that the books I have cited do contain the story but don't give a classical reference. As such, by definition, they must be unable or unwilling to do so. With that in mind I think the statement passes OR guidelines as what is states is purely factual. As a final note I've added an extra paragraph which has yet to be checked. This followed an email correspondence with two university academics, one from the University of Cambridge and the other from the University of Vermont, both of whom were extremely helpful. Nyctimene (talk) 19:31, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
OR is a minefield, but, in all honesty, the current article falls foul of it in a number of places. At the moment, it is more like a short literature review or a section of a research article than a Wikipedia article; factual or not, the statements seem to come with a large degree of editorialising. My worry here is partially to do with the tone. Saying that Smith was "unable or unwilling" to do x sounds like a judgement on Smith. Basically, upon reading this article, I come away with the impression that there is no classical source which mentions this nymph, but, so far as I can see, you don't cite a single source which makes that claim- this feels like a claim that the author of the article is pushing, rather than a claim made in the literature (though I certainly don't intend to cast aspersions on your motives). The new paragraph is doubly problematic. "Just as significant as those compilers unable to authenticate the story are those who simply make no mention of it whatsoever" Who says it's significant? Who says they're "unable" to authenticate? Those are exactly the kind of claims which would have to be cited. Phrases like "an equally magisterial volume" are just not in keeping with Wikipedia's neutral tone. In order to include a mention that a book doesn't contain a mention, we'd really need to see some claim that this is surprising in some way. Perhaps another academic picks up on this point? Alternatively, if Jones claims that they have compiled a list of every nymph, but this one is not included, that would perhaps be worth mentioning. Basically, a Wikipedia article differs in a number of ways from other kinds of article, even other encyclopedia articles- you need to be aware of our guidelines on verifiability (which is a different thing from truth), neutrality (which is a different thing from objectivity), and original research (which means we can't move beyond what reliable sources actually say). As a final note, personal correspondence is never a reliable source- everything we publish has got to have been pre-published in some way. J Milburn (talk) 19:58, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi J Milburn, thanks for the reply. You've given me a lot to think about. I think I understand your objection. I agree the tone is problematic. I guess I've found it difficult to separate my personal view on the topic from the article. What I'll try to do is step back and rewrite the article in a more neutral, objective fashion. Just quickly the books cited do purport to be extensive, containing virtually all classical figures. I included phrases like, 'magisterial' and the like to try and convey this but accept that this is probably not the way to do so. Your suggestion that I find a source indicating why Acantha's absence is surprising is a good idea. Finally I wasn't trying to use personal correspondence as a source, I just didn't want to take credit for finding all the references when I didn't. Anyway I'll send you another message once I've redone the article. I'm committed to getting this article to GA status and am happy to keep working to bring it up to par. Nyctimene (talk) 20:14, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ok, great- best of luck with it. You may want to include a little more about the plant, as an aside. Something else to think on. J Milburn (talk) 20:20, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi J Milburn. Just made my first attempt at the rewording and wondered what you thought. I'm aware that it's difficult for me to judge whether or not the tone is objective but I've made a real effort. Sentences such as, 'it is notable that' have all been removed and any claims that a source is particularly authoritative or comprehensive are backed up with references. I hope the article no longer reads like an argument but simply a collection of facts supported by verifiable sources. Nyctimene (talk) 22:42, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I should perhaps quickly preempt a possible objection I see coming. I'm aware that phrases like, 'an encyclopaedia considered an unparalleled masterpiece of German scholarship' might be seen as failing to maintain a neutral point of view. In making such statements I tried my best to follow the advise in WP:SUBJECTIVE which states that while it is inappropriate to give a personal endorsement of a source it, 'is appropriate to note how an artist or a work has been received by prominent experts.' Nyctimene (talk) 23:03, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi J Milburn, hope you're having a nice weekend. I don't mean to hound but just wondered if you'd had the chance to look over the article following the recent changes? I'm eager to hear what you think so that I can either begin the renomination process or start making the additional changes required. Nyctimene (talk) 14:17, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Honestly, there still seems to be a degree of OR, as you still aren't citing anyone who mentions the lack of classical sources. This means some claims (see the list below) are effectively your interpretation of the primary sources, rather than claims reflecting high-quality secondary scholarship. WP:OR specifically mentions this- "Do not analyze, synthesize, interpret, or evaluate material found in a primary source yourself; instead, refer to reliable secondary sources that do so." Until we have a secondary source which raises questions about the myth's authenticity, I think there's always going to be a danger of OR, here. J Milburn (talk) 14:55, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • "Compilers have, however, often omitted reference to classical sources."
  • "On inspection, however, Pliny makes absolutely no reference to Acantha, Dioscorides refers only to the plant and Hesychius simply explains what the word means."
  • "A number of latter compilers have similarly failed to include classical references when retelling the myth."
  • The claim that anything is "surprising".
Thanks for taking a look J Milburn. As far as I was aware the policy is as follows, “A primary source may only be used on Wikipedia to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the primary source but without further, specialized knowledge.” With respect I think the statements cited do meet these criteria:
      • "Compilers have, however, often omitted reference to classical sources." Five authors are cited, all of whom omit a classical source. As such surely the statement is a straightforward description of fact? To say classical sources are not given is not analysis, interpretation or evaluation but simply the plain fact of the matter.
      • "On inspection, however, Pliny makes absolutely no reference to Acantha, Dioscorides refers only to the plant and Hesychius simply explains what the word means." Again this is not analysis of the primary sources, it simply states what they say. The claim is verifiable by any educated person simply by following the links given.
      • "A number of latter compilers have similarly failed to include classical references when retelling the myth." Citations are given to four compilers who have not cited references. As such surely the statement is unarguably true? If you dislike the word, ‘failed’ I could change it to something like, ‘also not included.’
      • "Surprising." I can see how this is perhaps problematic. My point was that if the story were indeed authentic then it is most surprising that Acantha doesn't appear in a thesaurus containing all Latin names. If however you find the word objectionable then I can simply remove it such that the sentence reads, ‘The myth does not appear in...”
I think it’s really important to emphasize that the section, ‘Origin of the myth’ is not there to question the myth’s authenticity. I personally doubt its claim to antiquity but you have to separate what I believe, and what might have come across in previous drafts, from what is on the page now. It seems entirely reasonable to me that in an article about a myth the origin of said story is discussed. Whether or not questions are raised about the myth's authenticity in the secondary literature seems neither here nor there. So long as all the claims made throughout the article are factual and verifiable, and so long as the tone is neutral I don’t see why there needs to be any OR problem. Nyctimene (talk) 16:03, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid I'm unconvinced. The "surprising" claim is definitely OR- I'm surprised to see you arguing its case. It's not our place to say what's surprising- even with a source, you'd probably need to say something like "which is, according to Smith, surprising". I am also unconvinced that the others aren't in violation of the guidelines. Let me draw a comparison: I could claim that the Harry Potter books do not contain a single direct mention of Islam. I could even write a short article about this- I could cite all seven main Harry Potter books, and write a stub article composed only of simple factual statements cited to the primary sources. Would this mean that Harry Potter and Islam was a perfectly OK article involving no OR? No, of course not. In order to talk about it at all, we'd really need some secondary sources which discussed Islam (or the lack of Islam) in the Harry Potter books. Is the article on the nymph as bad as this? No, but I do think that it makes a similar kind of mistake. J Milburn (talk) 17:26, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Re: Daedalion edit

Hi Nyctimene. Sorry to take so long in responding to your note, but I wanted to think a little on how to respond, then family demands intervened (I have two children), & only now had a chance to respond.

First, my evaluation wasn't for WP:WikiProject Mythology, but for WP:WikiProject Classical Greece and Rome. And what I was doing was going thru the articles that lacked class or importance ratings & assigning them ratings. Although I admit the ratings were assigned on a subjective basis, having done this off & on for a number of WikiProjects, I've found that at least a quarter should be rated "Start" or better classes, & about as many should be rated "mid" importance or better. (There's a similar proportion amongst articles currently rated as "Stub" class -- should be "Start" or better -- but that's neither here nor there.) So sometimes I should rate an article more than "Start", but I leave it at that level since I'm more interested in simply moving the rating from a "Stub". (Then there are procedures about rating an article at "C" or "B", & I'm just trying to rate as many articles as I can.)

Now for the article Daedalion. I've done a bit of research on this topic, & I have to admit there's not much published about this legendary personage, & most of it is in the article; one could argue that, based on that criteria, it is "B" class. (I looked in my stand-by reference on Greek mythology, H.J. Rose's A Handbook of Greek mythology, & everything it contains about Daedalion is contained in one footnote. FWIW, Rose does cite one source not in this article, Apollodoros' Library I.52, which I'd consider adding.) If you wanted to improve this article further, I do have a couple of suggestions:

  • The article states Daedalion's story may originate in Boios' work. Boios is an obscure figure; saying he is the source of this story is explaining the obscure with the more obscure. I'd like to see who & why Boios is said to be the source. (I'm guessing Sara K. Myers either stated some reasons, or admits she's just guessing.)
  • How does this story compare to other stories of transformation into birds? Has anyone done a study of these kinds of stories? (Yes, this borders on original research, but someone besides Ovid must have written on this topic.)
  • Ovid is one of the most widely read Latin poets, & over the centuries a large body of scholarly commentary has accumulated around his works; doubtless somewhere in that corpus someone has written on the relevant passages of the Metamorphoses.
  • The name "Daedalion" is very similar to that of a better-known mythical figure, "Daedalus"; what is the etymology of Daedalion's name.

But this article touches upon a problem that will only grow more common: articles that cover their topic completely -- if not exhaustively -- yet are surprisingly short. (I'm currently facing this with three biographical articles on 2 Empresses & one boy Emperor of Trebizond: what can be written about any one of these three will fit in a paragraph or two.) Wikipedia will need to face this problem & decide how to fix it. Some topics will be best served by merging them. Some we will need to simply accept that an article of less than one thousand words can, indeed, be properly considered a GA or FA. In the case of this article, Daedalion, it would be best to convince a disinterested -- & likely uninformed -- reviewer by trying to showing the article covers every possible angle & making it clear everything knowable in the article is there.

I hope this helps you with this article. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me. -- llywrch (talk) 06:28, 26 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
