Re: New Page Patroller (Scapler)

Yes, though I marked as many pages as I could "patrolled", there were some pages where I did not feel I knew enough about the subjects to mark them one way or the other. I felt it was better to leave these as they were for others to take care of. Thank you for taking an interest though; new page patrolling is both useful and entertaining, isn't it though? Scapler (talk) 01:12, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Actually, in the page I noticed, you had marked it for speedy deletion but had not marked it as patrolled. But from your post, it seems that was an accidental one-time thing.
NPP is really interesting, I agree. I've just lost track with how many pages I've patrolled, but it must be at least 750 that I've tagged for deletion. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 01:15, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it must have been a one time mistake, sorry. Actually, it seems like I have had to mark pages as patrolled at least twice before they have shown up as marked on multiple occasions tonight. I wonder if there are glitches? Scapler (talk) 01:39, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, out of many, many pages I have patrolled tonight, it has only been a problem with three or four, so it is really no big deal. (Just slightly, though only minimally, annoying, like a mosquito with a defective hematophagian technique)
Wikipedia tells me exactly what that is! NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 01:49, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Newbie Help

Hithere and thank you..i added a link to th "the Alchemyst, The Magician, The Sorceress" pages earlier tonight and also to the author's page. "Michael Scott" they have been removed and i have been asked not to re post them, i am brand new to this, if i did something wrong then i apologise, but they are not advertising..it is a book discussion forum which has been approved and sanctioned by the author, i have e mail proof of that request and there is proof on his website where he directs his traffic to come to this forum as it is the start of a full new fan site that is endorsed and participated in by the author..how can i change the decision? thank you for your time and advice :0) Zephfya (talk) 01:56, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, hi there, and welcome to Wikipedia. As a newcomer to Wikipedia, you are likely unfamiliar with several of Wikipedian policies, including this one. Now, you say that the author of the book wants to try to drive traffic to this new forum. Unfortunately, the kind of is the definition of advertising. Perhaps you want to familiarize yourself with this policy, and if you have any more questions, perhaps you could ask at WP:Help Desk.
If you feel, after all of this, that these links still merit inclusion, perhaps you want to try discussing it at the talk pages (go to the top of the article and hit the talk tab) of the articles. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 02:05, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, Huggle seems to be having issues with marking pages as patrolled. I can see it trying to do that on the bottom (in the log) but it always fails for some odd reason. Otherwise, I would be marking those pages. And I'd far rather be templated than rickrolled... It has less embarrassment. DARTH PANDAtalk 01:20, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Yea, no problem. I still have no clue what the error with the new page marking is, so I'm going to avoid it as much as possible from now on until I figure out the issue. DARTH PANDAtalk 00:27, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

I suppose you're right that I'll need that page, in fact I was about to use it... I thought it might be easier just to remove the whole thing altogether for now. DARTH PANDAtalk 00:29, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello NuclearWarfare!

Thanks for your "welcome", for the cookies and for the help. I have a question regarding my user page. I have just put some stuff on my French Wikipedia user page ([[[1]]]). Mainly I put there some user boxes describing me. Is there a way for transferring these boxes or equivalent userboxes in my English Wikipedia page User:Nicodetr? Thanks. Regards,

--Nicodetr (talk) 16:05, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there isn't, due to the way Wikipedia is coded. However, what you can do is redirect your English Wikipedia page to your French one. Add {{softredirect|fr:Utilisateur:Nicodetr}} to the top your userpage, and people will be given the option of clicking on the link to get to your French Userpage. Move

Hi NuclearWarfare, I was just wondering, why did you move the page House's Head to House's Head (House)?--Music26/11 16:08, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, I just felt that it would help organize things better if all of the episodes had a standardized naming system. While it may seem redundant, it also seems standardized to a newbie who comes here and wants to search for an episode name. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 20:30, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fernando Lembo di Pino

I see you've relisted this a second time. My inference is that if no-one gives enough of a toss to enter a debate, this merely underlines the subject's lack of notability. If no 'debate' ensues, what actually happens per WP guidelines?--Yumegusa (talk) 23:17, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm willing to give this one last run and wait, then close as no consensus to delete, default to keep. Consensus at AfD means that people have to bring in good reasons to delete; otherwise it is kept. I can't quote any guidelines, but my idea seems like a reasonable interference. Anyway, that's just my idea. Do you have any other suggestions? NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 23:23, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Well I've just said what my inference is, and given you my reasoning, and you haven't offered any counter-interpretation. You say, "Consensus at AfD means that people have to bring in good reasons to delete; otherwise it is kept" but two editors have reached a consensus to delete, based on inability to establish notability. A (presumably) sole anon has been responsible for maintaining the article, which is way below WP standards in every respect; there appears to be no way to fix it without recourse to external sources, none of which exist. Seems to me that failing to delete such an article under these circumstances approaches irresponsible negligence.--Yumegusa (talk) 08:01, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
In that case, you should wait for a group of editors to come by and verify that fact, as is already happening. Just be patient, remember that that there is no deadline, and know that if the article is truly against Wikipedian policy, it will be deleted, even if it has to go through an extended AfD because AfD regulars have overlooked it. One of my edits was removed and considered vandilism because it contained an "inappropriate link". I would like to know why the link was considered inappropriate. All it was was a link to the book I was refering too. Please tell me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Theonlyonethatmatters (talkcontribs)

It wasn't so much the link as the fact that you were inadvertently publicizing an external source. If you read that past link and still feel your edit was appropirate, perhaps you should bring it up on the talk page of Wood. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 20:46, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Question re: APICS The Association for Operations Management

The legal name of the organization is APICS The Association for Operations Management. The full, incorporated name is American Production and Inventory Control Society d/b/a APICS The Association for Operations Managment. The issue is that when we reincorporated, we had to modify the old name. Since the 1970s, however, no one has used the name American Production and Inventory Control Society.

I can provide a letter from the CEO if necessary to make the change. Since Wikipedia has this acronym policy, I would be fine with making the "APICS" page the main page and changing the title to "APICS The Association for Operations Management" and redirecting the "American Production and Inventory Control Society". Is that something we can do? --Opsman1952 (talk) 21:15, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

AWB

I appreciate that you totally disagree with my approach to this, but you I please implore you to not make change like this using the tool? Because they are so minor and insignificant (compared even to the removal of a category), I'd suggest that they violate that 4th point you mentioned. WP:TFD and WP:IFD results often require removal of the relevant item, and it's along with this sort of task, along with article tagging runs/etc, that I'd imagine this sort of change should be made. Yes, it is over a longer period, but if the change is included into AWB's general fixes (if a strong consensus to change existing articles is shown to exist), it'll be done when nearly any user/bot runs a task. I hope this makes sense, and please do avoid making such small edits (if anything, it clogs up recent changes with many bot-like edits with no real change which might pose problems for RC patrollers) if at all possible. Thanks, Martinp23 23:45, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I've reread some of Xenocidic's comments and have decided to reactive the "Skip if no typo fixed" option on AWB. This issue should not come up again :) NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 23:46, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

AfD closures

Please wait for five days before closing an AfD. I have noted that different AfD's you closed had not even run for four full days before you closed them. WP:DPR hgives more info on this. Fram (talk) 07:13, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

(Nearly) all of the AfDs I have closed have been under wp:snow rationales. Out of the ones I have closed recently, I can't think of a one that could have possibly closed differently. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 19:50, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shirts Versus Skins: closed after four days and six hours with three keeps (not a snow at all). Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/@$$ is closer to a snow (but if you close it as snow, then please indicate so in the closing statement), but closed after just less than four days. This, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Benjamin B, is from a cursory glance the worst: a weak keep closure after clearly a lot less than four days... Would the result have been different? Probably not, but why not wait at leat five days as proscribed in the policy? Fram (talk) 07:16, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
I really don't see what's wrong with those closures, but to err on the side of community friendship, I shall resolve to only close AfDs after 5 days have passed. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 18:54, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Page moves for episode articles

Why are you moving so many articles on television episodes in contravention to the guideline WP:TV-NAME? Jay32183 (talk) 09:42, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

No, you've contradicted Wikipedia:Naming conventions (television)#Episode articles quite blatantly. The argument you're presenting here was shot down for being inconsistent with WP:NAME and WP:DAB, both of which say to use the simplest name. Jay32183 (talk) 00:19, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Diego Garcia

Sorry but how the...how was what I wrote vandalism? I was speaking the truth. If you support what the British/American government has done with regards to Diego Garcia then so be it but don't try and make out as if I vandalised the article when it's been all sugar-coated to make it look the British government 'legally' purchased the land! That's a blatant lie! Freedom of speech mate. Actually not even FOS, I know the 'real' history behind what's gone on there. I think you should do some research.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.163.105.233 (talkcontribs)

Actually, it is not the rest of wiki's buisness to do research. There are a couple of links you should look at. One is Wikipedia:Free speech, which explains wiki's policy on Freedom of Speech. The other is Wikipedia:Reliable sources. This says that anything that you write, especially contriversial issues, should be cited with reliable, third-party, published sources. Do you think it'd be a good idea to put the main list article at FLC while we wait for peer review activity on season 2? --haha169 (talk) 00:25, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Technically, that's not even allowed. We can wait for the peer review to end, or just terminate it and move right to FLC. Ask Rau J, I'm fine with either one. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 00:46, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Delinking dates

Edits like [2] leave a weird looking result where a single year is delinked in the middle of linked dates and years. Would it be possible to be more consistent with the used tools? PrimeHunter (talk) 01:21, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

I edited an article, but am embarrassed to say that I didn't read the guidelines first, I apologize.

Where in the guidelines should I begin?

ICorinthians2.4-5 (talk) 23:32, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi there, and welcome to Wikipedia. There are a few things you ought to learn about Wikipedia. One is that reading the guidelines isn't really all that important. As long as you use some common sense as to what you should add, that should be enough.
However, don't think I'm not going to answer your question. I posted a link on your page with the links that will probably be most helpful to you :)

Simon Morris article

Dear Sir,

I am the legal advisor to Mr Simon Morris. I am very concerned that Wikipedia is being used as a propaganda source to discredit Mr Morris and his associates, rather than as the free source of encyclopedic information which it was designed for. I have continually made amendments to the article to reflect accurate provable facts, but continually am faced with others whom wish to replace fact with conjecture, opinion and assumptions. It wold appear that they consider Wikipedia to be more tabloid than enclyclopedic. I consider many of the comments inserted about mr Morris to be either untrue, innaccurate, misleading and/or even defamatory.

Please can someone contact me directly on <personal info removed> or by email on <personal info removed>?

Not to be dumb or anything, but what is a mass rollback and how does one do it? Mononomic (talk) 00:46, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
It just involves using the rollback tool (which you can get later if you are a good editor) to quickly revert the edits of a single user. It is very powerful and should only be used sparingly, however. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 00:47, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks...

For the comment on use of G1. I think generally hit the mark on most reasons for deletion, but I am sure I miss on occasion.

As for marking as patrolled, I will only mark as patrolled those pages I am sure are valid. For example, if a page is for a CD and I am not familiar with the item, I will not mark as patrolled.

Thanks again...

ttonyb1 (talk) 20:33, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Well, if you have patrolled and tagged it, an admin will look it over anyway. So just be sure to mark all of the new pages that you tag for speedy deletion as patrolled.
G1 is to generally only be used for things like "ASJDHASFJDSHDAlol12378123sfduio". If you have a special case that doesn't fit any, consider using the prod templates or sending it to XfD instead. - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 20:55, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

RE: Neutrality on Federal Reserve page

Indeed. So, I corrected the blatant bias on said page. When one is sighting a source that clearly describes a historical fact, I find it a great disservice to other users to omit so much of the sources material that an entirely different message is conveyed. Statements of fact will inherently hold a position, sir. Sorry to disappoint you. Maybe you should actually read the source material, for verification, of course, before contacting me next time.

Thank you for your consideration,

New page patrol marking, G1, etc.

Two issues:

  1. As I have written on multiple occasions when someone tags my user talk page with this issue: I use Twinkle for new-page patrol, and when I tag a page using Twinkle, it removes the mark-as-patrolled link. This forces me to navigate back to the article and attempt to mark it, by which time it is often already deleted or marked. I am told that Twinkle is supposed to have this fixed Real Soon Now, but you know how that sort of thing goes.
  2. The nonsense tag on the article you noted seemed to be the closest criterion match, as the article had nothing to do with the title. I suppose vandalism could have been cited as well. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 05:03, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
The issue is really easy to solve. I use Twinkle as well for patrolling new pages, and I have no problem. First, when you open a new page, open it in a new tab. Then tag it for speedy deletion if it clearly meets the criteria and before the page reloads, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Mark as Patrolled. With Twinkle's lag in refreshing (~5 sec), you should have no problem with this.
Yeah, tried that. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Ends up being more trouble than it's worth. Been doing new-page patrol for about two years or so, and have yet to consistently be able to hit it that way. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 13:51, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
The G1 criteria (nonsense) is to only be used in very limited situations, where a bunch of random text is placed down like: "hasdasdhjasdhjasd." Otherwuse, just use the other criteria that are designed for this (g2, g3, g10, a1, a7, etc.) - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 05:08, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
In theory, maybe, but I think G1 gets used a little more broadly than that in practice. As I said, I've been doing new-page patrol quite a while now, and I think I can count on one hand the times that an admin has declined a G1 speedy request of mine when the article wasn't just random characters. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 13:51, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
We should try to stick to theory if at all possible though. I can't think of any reason where an article would need to be speedily deleted if it does not fall under the normal criteria. Can you not just do the regular way, please? - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 19:57, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Clearing Cookies Fixed it

Recently, you helped me with a problem with things appearing on a Wikipedia page when it shouldn't have. You suggested that I clear my cookies and that fixed it. Thank you. -Thunderforge (talk) 23:56, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

No problem :) Sometimes, the simplest answer is the one that seems obvious in hindsight :D Have fun in your wikitravels. - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 23:57, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

symbols

Just a reminder that we don'tcustomarily use symbols at AfD debates -- just bold face keep or deletes. DGG (talk) 04:22, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

I was using a script to do my discussion from the day's log page without having to open up the subpage. I'll hunt down the author of the script and have him change it. Sorry about that. - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 04:28, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

A report on one of my reversions

Hi why did you remove what i wrote on workchoices? i was involved in the ACTU your rights at work etc?

I had the same thing. You said my test of the edit on Petra worked and had been removed. What does this mean? my test? I just removed something about ninjas and king awesome pants which didn't belong there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeepenator (talkcontribs) 20:36, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Um, I have no idea what you mean, as your account history has no past history besides this post on my talk page. - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 22:27, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

I found what you meant. Since we edited at similar times, it is likely that I reverted you at close to the time that we were reverting the vandalism. I'm sorry. Please accept my apologies. - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 22:29, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

I was on a generic IP and created a username to specify what changes I make from others on my IP. There was a message from your username NuclearWarfare saying the test of my edit on Petra worked and had been removed. I looked in the history on Petra and you removed my changes I made. Just wondering what the "test" was and why my edit was removed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeepenator (talkcontribs) 22:31, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Gotcha... no prob. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeepenator (talkcontribs) 22:32, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Apolinario Mabini went to the University of Santo Tomas

Hi I just noticed you undid an edit about Apolinario Mabini going to Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College, not the University of Santo Tomas. And then you undid your won undo. The sources do indicate Mabini did indeed go to UST, not OLOPSC. I've made the correction, but I'd like to give you a heads up, as well as inquire why you hesitated. :-D Just as a matter of curiosity. -- Alternativity (talk) 18:02, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm actually not sure what you mean. I can't find the edit that you describe. - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 22:26, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Oh. It's at [3] (Sorry, don't know how to create a link to an old edit). By reverting your own edit (as your summary indicated), it went back to 122.2.112.212's Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College, when it should be University of Santo Tomas. :-D -- Alternativity (talk) 04:28, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Ah, ok. At that time, I was on a vandal-hunting spree. I remember seeing that edit, reverting it, and being unsure if it was really an unconstructive edit. I erred on the side of not biting the newbie, and I reverted. Glad to see that you followed up on it though; Thanks :D!
Also, I don't believe there is any way to interlink to a "diff". Using the direct link is fine. - NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 04:32, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

1983

Hi, I saw your edit to the FAC for 1983 Atlantic hurricane season, the main contributor had given a comment and I have wondered if you have seen it.--Neka 2008! 00:14, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Bug 16085

I notice you opposed based on the bug and would like your opinion on the validity of it. To keep discussions centralised, I have started a discussion here. Hopefully we can together establish consensus one way or another. Rambo's Revenge (talk) 12:06, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
