WikiCup 2015 March newsletter edit

One of Adam Cuerden’s several quality restorations during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by   Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by   MPJ-DK (submissions),   Hurricanehink (submissions),   12george1 (submissions), and   Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by   Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by   Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with   J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Thanks to everyone for participating, and good luck to those moving into round 2. WikiCup 2016 March newsletter (update) edit

We were thinking of you ... edit

You were here in spirit, whether you knew it or not at the time

... a week ago when we visited the new Wesmont station and took this picture (just added to the article, of course). We knew that you would have endeavored to visit it had you been in the area, and if it had been one of those weekends that you had spent with us it would have been on the itinerary (ironically, if you had still been in Montclair you would have probably gotten to it more easily). We felt your absence, and I tolf Anguel that this was the first time we did one of those things we would have done with you since you went west.

Hard station to find, though ... they do not signpost the parking lot if you're coming from the south, and even from the north you have to keep your eyes peeled for the lot as it's currently a temporary lot with an unsigned walkway the only entrance to the station.

Along that walkway is something that really made us think of you: a little history plaque (yes, I do have pictures, which I haven't edited and won't be able to upload, for reasons that will soon be clear) dedicated to ... the history of the Erie Railroad in New Jersey! I said to Anguel that maybe you were more involved in this station than we knew!

Obviously, eventually, you will get to see it. I'm sure you're going to have to, because now you can't see you've been to all the present and former stations on NJ Transit lines anymore.

Have a nice holiday weekend. Daniel Case (talk) 21:06, 28 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Another "thinking of you" picture edit

Anguel and I agreed that you would have taken this picture too, if you had been there

I just uploaded this picture I took of a tram in Milan (one of their oldest style, based on Cleveland's trolleys from the late 1920s (really!), while I was getting to know the city the first day I was there before Wikimania back in June. This was near Milano Centrale railway station and not far from my hotel; I was standing on the thin concrete strip in the middle of the street at the south side of the Piazza Duca d'Aosta when I saw it coming, and I knew I would have this shot. I had Anguel in mind; later I thought "I bet Adam would have taken this picture too if he'd been standing there". So enjoy! Daniel Case (talk) 02:26, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

And again ... edit

I'm sure we would have found time to take this one too ...

A couple of weekends ago I finally got the chance (I was down in NJ for my 30th HS reunion) to get a picture of the Woodbridge train wreck site, something that turns out to be closer to the Woodbridge station than I had realized. Had I known that at that time we were there, I wouldn't have needed to make this special trip. Daniel Case (talk) 18:40, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Extended confirmed protection edit

Hello, Mitchazenia. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Trolley to the library edit

Don't know where else to put this suggestion; hope you and other relevant people see it. Starting with the less urgent, I'm tired and probably will go nowhere in the morning. Not too tired to edit photos, however, and might go to the afternoon activities in Balboa Park. Which, due to mistaken assumption that the park was where the conference was, I got a hotel room nearby. Too tired to set that sentence right.

Down to business, attendees who use the Blue and Orange lines should use the Park & Market station. Shorter, downhill walk. Above all, it's simpler. Let's see how a rough draft comes out:

All three lines of the San Diego Trolley have stations near the library. The Blue and Orange lines stop at Park & Market station is the most convenient. Get off and walk two blocks south, which is the direction the trolley went. The library is on the right. The Green Line's closest station is the 12th & Imperial Transit Center. Walk west on Imperial Avenue to Park Boulevard, turn right and walk northeast up Park Boulevard to the library, which is on your left.

I'm sure it needs work beyond obvious grammar and linking. There might even be a better walking route, but I'll concentrate more on pictures tonight. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:00, 7 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup edit

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase. We apologize for the delay in sending out this message until after the competition has started. Thank you to Krishna Chaitanya Velaga for aiding in getting this message out.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletters, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Invitation to Training Modules design conversation edit

Hello! We are leaving you this message because you have previously indicated that you interested in helping the Wikimedia Foundation Support & Safety team in developing our training modules this year.

We appreciate all the help and thoughts users like you have offered thus far. We would like to encourage you, if you are interested, to participate in the next step of our development: a community consultation about the design and structure of the modules. Note that we're not yet getting feedback on the content of the modules - a separate consultation about that will be starting soon.

In this "design" consultation, we're looking for advice on things like the best place to host these modules, the accessibility of content, and other potential design decisions. Please feel free to leave any thoughts you have about these things on the talk page. Thanks! Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 18:12, 8 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins edit

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers edit

Hi Mitchazenia.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
