Orphaned non-free image File:LivinBlues-HellsSession album cover.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:LivinBlues-HellsSession album cover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Spinnin' Records edit

Hi Mathonius, I declined this speedy deletion nomination of yours. The redirect may be misleading, but the article does mention that the artist is signed to this label. As such, the page doesn't qualify for speedy, but you may want to list it at redirects for discussion. Regards, decltype (talk) 07:38, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oops, I see now that you've already done so. Sorry! decltype (talk) 07:39, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Decltype, no problem. Thank you for your notice! I haven't nominated anything on the English Wikipedia before... User Riverside Mother Hubbard appears to be a vandal. He or she created a bunch of nonsensical redirects to Sidney Samson, probably to surreptitiously promote this artist. Yours sincerely, Mathonius (talk) 07:50, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
It is kind of tedious. You actually have to add an entry for the redirect at that page as well. If you look at the other RfD entries you will hopefully get the idea. If not, feel free to ask. Regards, decltype (talk) 07:55, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
I really appreciate your support! I'm a bit slow, because I have to get used to the procedures and such... and English is my second language. I added two entries at the RfD-list, do you think that's correct? Thanks for your help, Mathonius (talk) 08:06, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I know exactly what it's like, as I'm also active on several projects. Your entries look okay to me. Regards, decltype (talk) 09:00, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

(I have to remember not to say 'Ta'...) I'll accept your expertise. I create a userpage and talkpage on Wikipedias where I've got an edit history - mainly to let people know where to contact me if I've done something.... I'll use your version. Peridon (talk) 21:08, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Album All Things Bright and Beautiful Cover.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Album All Things Bright and Beautiful Cover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. Dear Courcelles, I believe that this file should be used on All Things Bright and Beautiful (album). It was removed, probably because the link in the file description was a redirect(?). I've changed the link. Please let me know if I didn't do it right. Yours sincerely, Mathonius (talk) 20:08, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Warning rescinded. That Ole Cheesy Dude (Talk to the hand!) 21:21, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dear Thecheesykid, I'm afraid you're mistaken. I was busy 'renaming' categories (see for example here) on the Dutch Wikipedia. In this case I moved nl:Categorie:Omnisportclub, which I subsequently deleted (see the log), to nl:Categorie:Omnisportvereniging and simply fixed the interwiki links by changing it on this project and on fr.wp, hoping the bots will soon pick it up and fix the rest. Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 00:58, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Didn't notice the timing... I just thought you mightn't have known what the reference he tried to add was. (There are worse ones.) Your request for rollback edit

Hi Mathonius. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Salvio Let's talk about it! 01:29, 1 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Romania edit edit

Hi, I did add a comment on the discussion page explaining my edit. If they want to say Michael the Brave intended to unify Romania they need to provide a source other than Ceasescu era scholarship. The most famous Romanian historian, Lucian Boia, rejects any notion of Michael the Brave unifying Romania as no conception of present day Romania existed at the time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.49.140.80 (talk) 16:00, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Iota Nu Delta edit

The controversies section is not something that should be published while it is still being investigated. It has no relevance to the rest of the article and, in the best interest of the involved party, I think it should be removed for the time being. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asdffasd (talkcontribs) 01:22, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also, the original editor, "Indpresident", is not a member of this organization nor is he/she affiliated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asdffasd (talkcontribs) 01:25, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello Asdffasd, thanks for explaining this to me, I understand now. Please provide a summary of your edits, especially when removing content. If someone disagrees with the removal, I'd advise to discuss it on the talk page (see WP:EW for more information). Good luck, Mathonius (talk) 01:31, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Mathonius. On September 4th, user "Indpresident" added the addendum to the page. Since then, there have been edits made by him until it was recently discovered by members of the organization. Upon discovery, it was removed. Since then, the edit has been undone by various users. Please see to it that this edit is removed, if possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asdffasd (talkcontribs) 01:41, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for the edit warring, I'm fairly new to this and was not aware of such a rule. I have great pride for my organization so seeing things like this on such a broad channel (Wikipedia) is upsetting. Thanks for your help. Asdffasd (talk) 01:45, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

No problem. I have now initiated a discussion on the talk page and notified both you and "Indpresident" about this. Regards, Mathonius (talk) 02:22, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

My apologies for the edit warring. I believe this information has significant relevance, as Kishan Neelesh Vaidya is a founding father and current president of the East Carolina colony. I have cited his charges. I have great pride in Greek Life. However, when crimes are committed by those with substantial and considerable amount of power in the organization, I believe it should be known to the public, and future pledges. Kishan Neelesh Vaidya holds the highest leadership position in his colony. Therefore, this addition holds relevance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Indpresident (talkcontribs) 02:29, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The user who continues to delete the Controversies section is doing so because it is Rush week - a week when prospective pledges (those interested in joining the fraternity) take part in activities with the fraternity. In an attempt to protect their public image, they are deleting any information that shows any wrongdoing by any leaders in the fraternity. This page has a history of being subjective, and was even at risk of deletion because of the lack of objective material. Wikipedia is not a RUSH BROCHURE. I believe it is a place where individuals can obtain objective information about the fraternity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Indpresident (talkcontribs) 02:47, 9 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The addition of the "Controversies" section should be removed. One person being accused or convicted of a misdemeanor crime is not noteworthy. Moreover, one member's misdemeanor has no relevance on a national organization's Wikipedia page. For one, it does not meet Wikipedia's guidelines for Notability. If it did, every single national organization's Wikipedia page should reflect any misdemeanor ever allegedly committed by any of it's members and leaders under a section called "Controversies". This will be a tough argument to sell at Fraternities and Sororities Wikiproject. Also, the addition of this section blatantly violates Wikipedia's Neutral Point of View Policy. This does not belong in an encyclopedia, it sounds too much like Gossip. It's an attempt to portray the entire national organization in a negative light. The claim of the user "Indpresident" is further delegitimized by his mention of the internal policies of a directly competing fraternity (Delta Epsilon Psi). Petty rivalry and vandalism do not belong on Wikipedia.

This section is at the level of defamation, broadly displaying the alleged misdemeanor of a non-notable person, his picture, his university, and an organization in which he is involved. Not all of these things belong in the public domain. It is blatantly defamatory, has no relation to the article, and is poorly sourced.

The solution is to revert back to this version. Although it is not perfect, it is not blatantly biased like the current version. Also, until consensus is reached on the talk page, it might be best to revert back to the less controversial version. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Winfinity (talkcontribs) 06:26, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I've removed that section, because I think a music group like River of Sins shouldn't be described in an article about the school. Besides that, it wasn't written completely from a neutral point of view ("...the band gained a considerable lot of fame after their crowd pulling performances..."), you didn't use reliable sources and I actually doubt this subject is notable enough to be described in this encyclopedia at all. Removing external links 'hitchhiking' edit

Unfortunately I disagree about your edit. I won't add them again without first explaining why. First of all, if you can remove the websites I added, velabas.com and hitchtheworld.com, then you should definitely remove ekoroad.com, which has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of hitchhiking, and should instead be under rideshare. I realize that the websites I suggested are presonal websites, but they are not simply 'blogs'. Many hitchhikers and new hitchhikers use these two websites to learn more about what hitchhiking is, how it's done, and what kinds of experiences can be expected. Removing the links is denying readers a very real, and very coherent block of information. It is not personal promotion, as you suggest. Take a closer look and you will see that these websites do not make any money from their existence. I know that wikipedia is not a place for listing links. These suggested websites are extremely relevant, they are neutral, and they are useful.

I am fully aware as a web-developer myself that wikipedia has a nofollow attribute on its links, but it was never my intention to better their rankings--you don't see me posting these links in any other category.

I have not put digihitch.com on external links either, because I simply assumed it was there, but now that I realize it is not it makes me assume that someone has removed it, which is another denial of important, relevant information. Wikipedia is a good website, and hitchwiki is too, but users CANNOT get the information they need or are looking for from just these two sources. velabas.com and hitchtheworld.com are long-term regularly-updated websites, and digihitch.com is the premiere forum for hitchhikers. Please review all three websites carefully to see the advice and methods sections, forums, etc... If you are still unconvinced that they should be among external links, then they should have a category unto themselves. I await your reply.

Chael777 (talk) 12:35, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Chael777, thank you for your explanation. I don't think these external links belong on Wikipedia, but I might be wrong, of course. Could you please first propose a re-addition on the talk page of the article, to see if there's enough support (i.e., a consensus) to add these links? Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 22:44, 24 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikis edit

Mathonius, you recently removed citations to a wiki. Arguing it is an "unreliable source". But Wikipedia:Verifiability does not require the removal of questionable sources. It requests that

  • "the material is neither unduly self-serving nor an exceptional claim". The material covered does not seem to make any extraordinary claims.
  • "the article is not based primarily on such sources." Most of the articles have further sources. Dimadick (talk) 09:04, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Dear Dimadick, thanks for replying. WP:QS states that "[q]uestionable sources should be used only as sources of material on themselves". You're citing criteria which do not apply to the way these sources are used.[1][2][3][4][5][6] Could you please remove these unsuitable sources yourself? Michigan Wine edit

Hello, You're denying my link for cherriesandgrapes; an online portal for michigan wine. C&G is easily compared to michiganbythebottle (also listed under external links). The way I see it, if C&G is spam, then michiganbythebottle should be too, right? We work with the same vineyards, the difference is michiganbythebottle you buy instore, we = online directly to the store. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mmikhjian (talkcontribs) 02:29, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your Huggle edit at Article X of the Covenant of the League of Nations edit

Hi Mathonius. I just wanted to let you know that this Huggle edit you did inadvertantly reverted back to another vandalized version of the article. I assume there's a kid out there somewhere who got bored and decided to replace U.S. president Woodrow Wilson's name with his own (or a friend of his). It was reported at the help desk by the edtior whose edit you reverted. I told the editor s/he should've just fixed the disruptive edit instead of adding on to it with another disruptive edit. ;) Have a great evening! --76.189.111.199 (talk) 05:02, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Why edit

Hello Mathonius. You recently removed my "less than neutral" post on the Godzilla vs. Destoroyah page. I don't know why you even thought that way. I was only giving the ending a positive outlook for those who haven't seen it yet. Did you find my "Godzilla's legacy will live on" offensive or something. I'm sorry for sounding rude if I am. But I'd like to know. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.68.126.18 (talk) 10:55, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your message. That line is subjective and therefore questionable. It isn't something I'd expect to find in an encyclopedia. Mathonius (talk) 11:09, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Categorisation edit

Hi Mathonius, I see you've been removing general categories from a large number of articles, replacing them with gender-specific categories. Have you seen Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality, which strongly advises against doing this? There has been high profile news coverage recently about this Wikipedia 'ghettoization' and, generally, I think we should make sure we leave articles in a general category (as well as gender-specific if necessary). Hope that makes sense. Sionk (talk) 16:26, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Sionk, thanks for your message. I appreciate that you're telling me this, because I wrongly assumed this categorisation was supposed to be gender-specific: I was looking for the article about Rowan Atkinson, and I found it in the category English male comedians. I hope I didn't cause too much trouble. I've reverted all my recent categorisation changes, except for the edit of the article about Steve Coogan, because that article was both categorised in the general category and the gender-specific category. Maybe the gender-specific categories should be deleted? As of now, some of the articles are categorised in the general category and some are categorised in the gender-specific category, making articles more difficult to find, like the one about Rowan Atkinson. Thanks again for your advice. Mathonius (talk) 16:49, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Great! It is all still quite a confusing situation, to be honest. Apologies, I didn't intend to 'name and shame' you - the Phil Cool article was on my watch list. You may be correct about the gender specific categories being unnecessary - I don't know how they arose in the first place! Sionk (talk) 17:19, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
the correct thing to do at this point is either (a) put them all in the head cat, and the gendered cats or (b) nominate the gendered cats for deletion. I agree, it is confusing. --Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 17:47, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sionk: gender-specific categories have at least once been proposed on my home wiki, the Dutch Wikipedia, because it would provide an easy way to count the articles about women. The proposal didn't receive enough support, by the way. Nowadays, Wikidata might (be able to) provide an even easier counting method for that purpose. Obiwankenobi: good ideas, but I don't really feel like doing any of that without knowing (more or less) for sure that I'm doing the right thing.   Is there a central page where this could be discussed? Mathonius (talk) 20:00, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
You can go to the talk pages for WP:Categorization or WP:EGRS. Yes, wikidata will help, but I don't think that will be coming online for categories for a while yet. --Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 20:05, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikilinking edit

Hi, and thanks for your work on the English Wikipedia.

I noticed an article you worked on. Just a short note to point out that we don’t normally link:

  • dates
  • years
  • commonly known geographical terms (including well-known country-names), and
  • common terms you’d look up in a dictionary (unless significantly technical).

(This even applies for infoboxes.)

Thanks and my best wishes.

Tony (talk) 03:30, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tony1, thank you for your feedback and for improving the article. I'm used to linking the birth year et cetera, because that's common practice on my home wiki, the Dutch Wikipedia. I appreciate your explanation of things on this wiki, and I'll try to keep this in mind for future articles of mine. :) Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 04:13, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Linking edit

Mathonius, you are most welcome. And we should be more aware on en.WP of the extraordinary contributions of those who translate and add articles into en.WP from other WPs. (My only wish is that the other WPs became more discriminating in using the wikilinking system, since we believe it's much more effective when strategically used, not to mention the aesthetic improvement).

Mmmm. This gives me an idea (as a Signpost writer): do you do much of this translation work into en.WP? I'm interested in the phenomenon, and in the experiences of individuals—since it's become such an important process. Tony (talk) 04:17, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply, Tony. I probably didn't even use that many wikilinks compared to the amount of links I regularly see (and remove) in articles on the Dutch Wikipedia, but it's difficult to change the tradition of excessive linking. I'm afraid I can't help you with your work for the Signpost. I've translated quite a lot of articles from the English Wikipedia into Dutch when I first started contributing four years ago, but I've never translated any articles from the Dutch Wikipedia into English. The good articles on the Dutch Wikipedia often are not suitable for translation to English, because they're either too complicated or already available on this wiki. Nowadays, I prefer to write new articles from scratch instead of using translations. So far, I have only written two articles on the English Wikipedia, both about Dutch topics: Kinderen geen bezwaar and Joost Prinsen. Most – if not all – of the available source material for those articles is written in Dutch, so I guess my knowledge of both languages still comes in handy, even though I don't do translations. ;) Regards, Mathonius (talk) 04:50, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I was interested in you as one of a number of sources rather than as a writer of a SP article yourself—for an investigation into the phenomenon, people's experience. The en.WP community is probably only dimly aware of its exitence, if at all. Not yet planned. Tony (talk) 06:33, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Okay. Well, I'd be happy to help! Mathonius (talk) 17:53, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

The file File:Alicia Bridges - I Love the Nightlife.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Using more than one non-free sleeve normally discouraged per WP:NFCC#3a. This case is no exception, despite different appearance from other release. Preferring one of US releases to the German one (45cat, ebay, discogs, )...

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
