Maintenance templates and categories

Hi, Just to let you know that most maintenance categoreis are put in articles by use of tags for example:

{{unref}} adds Category:Articles lacking sources (or one of its sub categories).

Also adding the category explicitly is counter productive, as it needs to be removed.

You obviously know something about Inuit art, for which I am grateful. There is a huge contradiction in the first paragraph of the body -- did the Thule produce much art or not? Both cultures produced a great amount of art, but their productions are of very different character. The art of the Dorset is generally more highly regarded; I believe that this is because the Dorset produced many artifacts that have no functional purpose, but were rather for shamanistic use. The Thule were more practical-minded, and produced functional objects decorated with relatively uninteresting zigzag patterns. There are even examples of Dorset-created shamanistic objects (such as a straw for sucking spirits out of the possessed) that were reworked into functional objects by the Thule (a needle case, in the previous example). The nomads that the first paragraph refers to are not the same as the Dorset, which is currently unclear; these nomads were the pre-dorset or ASTT. Flying bears were a dorset motif, not thule, and were not masks in any case... I've been meaning to work on this article for a while, but it would be nice to organize a couple users who could collaborate. Maybe WPVA or WP:IPNA would be of assistance. My mind must be going. I just realised that you said the Inuit culture article was on the German Wikipedia. As I suspected the main editor was de:Benutzer:Ansgar Walk (User:Ansgar Walk). He has written a lot on Inuit and has helped with translations before. If you want/need assistance he may be willing to help. Yes, I've already translated that part offline. There may be some gaps of a paragraph or two, like the part about genetic research on the Saqquaq - too many mile-long technical terms. I didn't intend to monopolize the process, and will have it up as soon as I can type it. Real life is hectic as a college freshman. I just wanted to avoid confusion, and not waste the time I'd already spent on it. Cyfal has also agreed to help, but his English is not as strong as yours. I've created a project page for the translation of this article here. Of those paragraphs that you already translated, I only left the headers (unchanged). Starting here, I took off translating the first few paragraphs. I hope I can do one or two paragraphs a day. Please copy your work in the place before the point where I started, and replace the original headers with the translated headers. Well I'm through with my part, at least for now. I need a break. I also did all the images of my part (all except one were in the Commons, the remaining one I will upload there shortly), all kinds of appropriate and inappropriate links, including red links. I also took a few lines from Cyfal who had strayed into "my" part (I discussed that with him, of course). I think we can create the article now and keep honing it. You might want to check out the comments left by Death Bredon on my project's talk page; I copied them to the discussion page of your project. He makes some pretty central points which, though unsourced, challenge the equally unsourced "facts" presented in the article.

I don't know if we should launch it now, as I am still in the process of correcting syntax and typos. I've contacted User:BrainyBabe and User:CambridgeBayWeather, who along with myself first came up with the idea for the translation. They will hopefully be able to help with the honing process. The only thing that seems to be still missing is those two sections

• 1.8.2 Gesellschaftsstruktur und Lebensweise im 19. Jahrhundert (Structure of society and way of living in the 19th century)
• 1.8.3 Nomadenleben in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts (Nomadic live in the first half of the 20th century)

Is anyone working on the translation of those? Other than that, I the pictures of the first part should be brought over from the German article, at least as far as they are in the commons (I kept all pictures of the part I translated, only one of them was not in the commons). I've compared the texts highlighted in yellow. As you say, it's not a copy and paste job, which would not be allowed. It's a paraphrase and a rephrasing and so little is directly taken that I don't see it as problematic. Some tweaks would take it further away from the original very easily, e.g. changing "proof form" to "the proof stage", for example. Well done on conscientiousness though. William Blake GAN

I've considering working this towards FA for well over a year, but have never been convinced it would be actually be possible. Everybody knows a little, everybody has projected a little misinformed preconception, and the FAC would be well, a shit storm; why is my interpretation not reflected. The talk page going back is a mess, despite the effort of yourself and others. I'm writing the articles on his paintings as a tester, just to get familiar with the sources and test the waters. Anyhow, the main Blake bio page as it stands is nowhere near GA; but if you ever do get some free time I would be likely be interested in sandboxing and spending a few weeks trashing it out to see what we can come up with. I know quite a lot about his drawings and paintings, but only a little about his poems. So I can cover bio quite well and the paintings comfortably, but after that I'm limited. Ottava would be a big help, but if were were to canvas wider I'm sure a few lit. people would bite. But it would be a massive, massive, project.

And I think the hook for the Stages would be best by using the fact that the usage of the flag lead historians to think the painting was completed c. 1815. But its a though one to condence into 175 characters. I'd try and weave the phrase the "abyss of death" into the hook for Chalk Cliffs on Rügen-death always sells- but I havn't looked at it properly yet. I will, though. Lithoderm, thank you so much for your work on Friedrich, including new articles on individual paintings, etc. (Many months ago I suggested to Ceoil that he and I collaborate on Friedrich, and I am going to "imagine" that all the recent activity related to CDF ultimately stems from this suggestion ... It would be my best contribution to Wikipedia and to CDF's legacy. :-) As you're one of the editors fulfilling it, thank you again.

I have just started to look at the painting articles you added and I wondered why the odd infobox at Chalk Cliffs. Can I propose we not use the Chalk Cliffs on Rügen template? The idea is great, but my argument against it is three-fold: it is not a "matter of fact" that the staffage in the painting are the people linked to; two of three of those two people will not need wikipedia articles; and the template ruins the infobox display. It's fine with me. Really, such an image-map template would be better used for paintings like this (I can't believe that Charles IV of Spain and His Family is such a weak stub, and that Goya is so poorly covered for his great popularity... imagine how effective DYK hooks on his Black paintings would be!) To be honest, I just wanted to test-use the image map tool so that I know how to use it when I do write articles on such paintings as Goya's group portrait. I was very impressed by how it showed up in Las Meninas... But since in all honesty it was for my benefit only, I would not be offended if it was removed and even deleted.

I'll be dialing back my activity in the next few days- final reviews are coming up, and I need to complete all my work that I should have been working on while I was wiki-ing ;). But by next Wednesday I'll be on Thanksgiving break, and then I would love to translate the 3 remaining articles from the German wikipedia on Friedrich paintings (The tetschen altar, Ships in the Harbor, and Kersting's portrait).

Hey. We need to provide a citatiion for each caption in the gallery before we go back to Awadewit at the FAC. I think I can do some, but can you remember where you got the others from? It looks like he copied them from the main article and from "my" articles on the paintings. Unfortunately, some of the facts don't have citations in their original locations either: That he created some of the funerary art in Dresden's cemeteries, for instance. I don't have vaughn, so I can't ref the statement for Seashore by Moonlight. I've refed the Siegel statement for Moonrise, as it was copied from an earlier paragraph that was referenced.... it needs the refname template, however, which I've never used. The statement on Schinkel for Sea of fog is copied from the body, where it also needs a reference. The "wedding picture" statement was copied from Chalk Cliffs on Rugen, where it has since been replaced by "The painting appears as a celebration of the couple's union." In any event it is still unreferenced and could be replaced by The art historian Helmut Börsch-Supan sees in the picture a representation of Friedrich's relation to death, and the threat to life by death: "clearly [...] as almost never before, but at the same time also in an unusually serene mood"., which is referenced. The rest of them are general observations that are supported by countless other citations in the article itself. Lithoderm 19:58, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Anyway, 'Fun' is not a word I would use in connection with the Medusa, but I know what you mean. There are a tonne of sources out there, and it is proving very easy to write. BUT.... would you please create a new section heading when you leave messages? Please don't put it at the bottom of someone else's thread, as you did at User talk:Ceoil.
