St.Thomas Tommies "draft"

Adding new categories
Hi, I have seen your edit in my new page College Square Swimming Pool. I have seen that you have deleted a category which I tried to introduce. I think there must be reason you have deleted it. But I want to add this category because I have pages in pipeline which will fall in this category and no appropriate category is there till now. Can you please guide me regarding this? - @Harryishere: The rules on categories are different to articles - you are encouraged to leave red links to articles that haven't been created yet, but you should never add categories that don't exist, per WP:REDNOT. You should have a read of WP:CATEGORIES, but one of the most common mistakes to make is WP:OVERCATEGORISATION, a good category should have 30-200 members, not just 5 or 6. People tend not to understand that categories are there to help navigation rather than to be metatags, there's a lot that can be done with intersection tools if you're really worried about it. So I think that right now it's looking pretty appropriately categorised given that Category:Swimming venues in India only has 12 members, although there probably ought to be a Category:Swimming clubs in India and in time a Category:Swimming venues in West Bengal. But that's the kind of level you should be aiming for. PS we don't have maps in articles, mapping is taken care of by the coordinates system in the top right. Happy Wiki-swimming! Red cat at FROLINAT
Hm, thanks for catching the red category at FROLINAT; I wasn't aware of that. That's a failure in the template code for {{cleanup translation}}. The template already has the capability to use a parent cat; it just doesn't do so in that case, because the code doesn't validate the parameter at all; you could put 'Klingon' in there, and it would accept it and generate that category. I've added a discussion to the Template talk page as a hook to remember and/or discuss this issue, which you're welcome to comment at.
It's possible the issue is bigger than this one template and that the discussion should be moved to WikiProject Template, as there are other Templates which deal with language names or codes, and some of them might be affected by this. If you happen to notice other red cats being generated at any language-related template, can you please either add the template name to that discussion and/or move the discussion as needed, and ping me? Making categories 101
Hi Deluge, since you're obviously knowledgeable about categories and I'm not, can I come here with questions from time to time? My first one is, how do I go about using a new category that doesn't exist yet? Do I just assign articles to it, and then it eventually gets created, or I can create it?
I work a lot in French history articles, and currently have a situation with a new one I'm creating about the Sigmaringen enclave, which was the government-in-exile in Germany where a group of ex-government ministers of the Vichy regime on the run from the Allies of World War II ran off to, to avoid capture. Anyway, an obvious category is Category:French collaboration (possibly Category:French collaboration in World War II, as the French have it—see the four French categories at fr:Commission gouvernementale de Sigmaringen). I was pretty shocked we don't already have a "French collaboration" category, and two searches didn't turn up anything close. There are many articles in en-wiki that could be categorized with this, and it would be helpful for those interested in the topic to have it. What's my next step here? - @Mathglot: You're welcome to ask for help, but my Wikitime tends to come in patches so there are times when I'm away for months. It's a good general rule that you should always try to let category names follow article names, so the first question would be is the Category:Vichy France hierarchy sufficient for your needs? If there's just this one article which describes life outside the borders of France, then I'd just lump it in with Vichy France (using the political sense rather than the narrow geographical sense) - navigation over-rides precise accuracy in the category world, so one often finds oneself holding one's nose a little bit if one's a purist for accuracy. Also searches may be less useful than just navigating the categories from a sensible starting point - for instance Category:Vichy France is a granddaughter of Category:Collaboration during World War II which should give you all the options you need. The thing about working in this kind of high-profile area is that in general the categorisation is pretty good, and although there is a Category:Belgian collaboration during World War II it looks like the Vichy category is considered to be the French equivalent. - @Mathglot: The most obvious thing to say is that category pages are specialist navigation pages in their own right, so it tends not to feel quite right when people put "article" navboxes on them that link directly to the subject in hand whereas it is appropriate to aid navigation to related categories. I guess the most famous example of the latter is {{navseasoncats}} which allows Category:YYYY in Foo type categories to easily link to YYYY+1 and YYYY-1 etc - I never expected when I wrote it that it would end up on >340k pages! Or see eg {{albums category}} which provides links to an artist's singles, album covers etc. Le Deluge (talk) 20:39, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

- @Mathglot: Oh, no worries in that case. There's a loose convention that templates are sorted with a tau (τ, about 40-something-th on the Greek menu in the drop-down below the edit box), but it's not strictly upheld - and people tend to be a bit keen to create template-specific WP:SMALLCATs which I'm not a huge fan of. - @Wira rhea: It's a pretty iron rule that subsidiary articles like this one should always "match parent league article". The reason for that is that if the parent article needs to be disambiguated for some reason (like there's another country with a league of the same name), then the same problem applies to the season articles as well. And just generally, it's a lot easier for both humans and automated processes if the names are consistent. In this case, how would you feel if 2021 Liga 3 pointed to the next season of Liga 3 (Georgia)? This is a global encyclopedia, not an Indonesian one, consistent disambiguation helps everyone.Le Deluge (talk) 10:26, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
