Wow, can you really be a newcomer, with that deft use of <ref>? If you are, serious respect for mastering horrid Wiki code! JackyR | Talk 22:40, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello JackyR, thanks for the kind comments. I am familiar with HTML basics so this is not too difficult to follow, especially with the extensive help files. The next step is a photo or two of mine. If you have any suggestions for improvement, please let me know.

License tagging for Image:W Withering at Caldas da Rainha.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:W Withering at Caldas da Rainha.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 04:09, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Great image. I see a bot has come to nag you about description and copyright. The links it offers are good, but a better course would be to go straight to Wikimedia Commons. This is the central library for all the Wikimedia projects (diff language Wikipedias, Wiktionary, etc), and images uploaded there are available for immediate use on all projects. Alas there's no easy transfer method from English-language Wikipedia, so you'll have to upload your pic again from scratch. And sign-up there to do so.
The slight wrinkle is that Commons pics have to be copyright-free in all domains, whereas Eng-lang WP seems happy to follow US law (bizarre, but there you are). However, your particular pic looks to be good all round. Generally there is excellent guidance for images at Commons, so if you can bear more learning I'd recommend starting there rather than Eng-lang WP's guidance. If there's anything I can help with, feel free to ask (I'm JackyR at Commons, too), and they're a friendly bunch at the Village Pump/Help Desk.
Phew. Sometimes it feels like one spends more time learning the ropes than pulling on 'em! Hang on in there! JackyR | Talk 10:58, 18 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Teaching Wikipedia editing for healthcare audiences edit

Following a discussion with Doug Taylor, we thought it would be helpful to draw up a list of transferable skills needed to edit a Wikipedia page successfully, and be a part of the Wikipedia community. This could form a useful template to allow comparison with teaching curricula. This in turn would improve the ease of incorporating teaching Wikipedia editing into such curricula.

I thought it might be useful to start a draft template below. This could be amended iteratively by the Wikipedia community, in order to build up a comprehensive document.

I have set out below the eight headings that WikiEdu use in their teaching template for the main stages in becoming proficient with Wikipedia.[1] Beneath that, I have started a basic matrix with the eight columns for the stages (1 - 8 across the top) and an expandable number of component knowledge or skills Below these eight headings, I have started setting out a list of actual discrete, assessible, actions comprising the various stages of the learning and doing processes for editing Wikipedia pages and engaging with the community. I have suggested some main headings (in bold) with subheadings (in italics) for the component skills needed for each heading. Against each item, I have inserted asterisks in each column (stage) which that item supports.

[NB this is not a list of the order in which to teach knowledge & skills, just a list of what they are, from basic to more advanced!]

Proposed deletion of File:WW portrait by Breda (copy).jpg edit

The file File:WW portrait by Breda (copy).jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unused, low-res, no obvious use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:01, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia edit

Dear fellow editor,

I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.

All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.

Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.

I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).

The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

Deceptive edit summary edit

Hi, Kitb. Please use explanatory edit summaries that correspond to your edit. This edit summary is downright deceptive. Bishonen | tålk 17:33, 13 May 2023 (UTC).Reply

Hello, Bishonen. Thank you for the feedback. however, there seems to be a misunderstanding here. I received an email alert saying that the page had been edited. I had a quick look at the change (as cited by the email: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MMR_vaccine_and_autism&diff=next&oldid=1153050584). I was simply looking at the highlighted text and spotted a purely grammatical typo in the previous edit ('...leading to a...' had been changed to '...triggered to a...') and removed the offending 'to'.
I always try to make my edit summaries accurate, and this one was—there was no deception, intended or actual. I think your (understandable, on reflection) wider concern is perhaps more appropriately directed at the earlier (now apparently no longer active) editor, Justito, who had changed the sense of the article, not just the grammar. Kitb (talk) 10:53, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Justito, who is still active, was making disruptive edits, and they had been reverted, and yes, you did remove a redundant preposition. If you had only done that, all would be well, but you actually also reinstalled all of Justito's disputed edits. Be more careful next time. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 14:59, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Valjean, I appreciate the explanation and apologize unreservedly for the unintended error.
Having looked at the history, I can now see that Jeppiz undid Justito's revision. I'm puzzled, as I did not receive a notification about Jeppiz's amendment (hence not thinking that there would be an interim reversion), only about Justitio's [13th at 16:14], yours 13th at 17:24]; Bishonen's [today at 18:33]; Sledgehamming's [today at 10:22]; and your last, just now.
Might there be an explanation as to why no notification was triggered for that edit, only? Kitb (talk) 15:30, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
(PS I described Justitio as 'inactive' as there was no User page in that name, when I looked. That's a second thing I have learned!)Kitb (talk)
It could have been an edit conflict thing. Shit happens. All's well now, so carry on. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 15:54, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, again—will carry on, and try to be more watchful! 😊 Kitb (talk) 16:00, 14 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
