Patrol CSD question

Thanks for the earlier tip, John. I've been around WP for a long time, but I'm new at patrolling, which brings up another question.

I sometimes find the categories for speedy deletion or PROD limiting. For example, I came across a couple of articles in Indonesian and Malay that don't seem to fit any one category, such as speedy deletion A2 (foreign article on another wiki) or PNT (needing translation). (One was an advert and another was an inspirational greeting.)

Without authority to delete them (although deletion is inevitable), advice how to handle something like this would be useful if you could spare a suggestion or two. Thank you.

I can't expand any of my "hidden" sections - to get to your reply I had to edit the page.
My "hidden"s at the top of my talk page appear as a blueish rectangle with the "title" in the middle - no buttons, hyperlinks or anything else. Your "Hidden reply" appears alone centred on the page below my signature - nothing else you have written on my page is visible.
User:AustralianRupert is having the same problem.

Si. It is concerning how often that happens. For grins, I just tried to create a new account, and the very first thing it pops up is a diatribe about "Username policy prohibits usernames which are promotional, misleading, or offensive. promotional usernames: containing existing company, organization, group, or website names (including non-profit organizations) containing domain names or email addresses". It's called a precedent; it's the foundation of the common law. There is no way to deny the fact that precedence is "accepted as an argument." Why aren't you removing these existing articles? Who are you to decide what is "truly notable?" Notable relative to what or to whom? What are your credentials to decide this? Do you have expertise in this specific subject area? Also, what is your COI claim based upon? A username? How can you assert such a claim based on an arbitrarily chosen name? For the record, I have no affiliation with this organization and don't intend to imply otherwise. Using your argument, I can only assume that you have a COI for every article that references the name "John." This is absolutely absurd. Please reinstate this article immediately. Wikipedia does not run by the common law but by policies and rules which are established by discussion and consensus among the Wikipedia community - all of the volunteers who are here to help with the project of building an encyclopedia. What is notable for our purposes is decided by the criteria explained at WP:Notability, and other guidelines I have pointed you to. "Who I am" to judge this, is an administrator, one of several hundred who have been entrusted by the community with some extra tools to help maintain the encyclopedia. As far as COI goes, if your username is Uvicwiki and you edit exclusively articles connected with a department of the University of Victoria, you should not be surprised if people deduce a connection. I have deleted all the album articles per WP:CSD#A9 and am planning an AfD for the films. As someone pointed out at the AfD, it's a real walled garden: the people who act in his films don't act in anything else, his IMDb reviews are by the same few people and they barely review anything else, all these articles are by SPAs. If you mean, why did I delete your article Complex Mathematics, it was because all it contained was the formula for a straight line, and the subject is already covered in Complex number and other articles linked from there like Complex analysis. I have never heard of the "Perplex Operator" in the header of this message, and nor has Google Scholar; if you want to write about it you will have to find a reliable source for what you say. I have made the page into a redirect to United States Senate election in New Mexico, 2012, as I see no indication in the deleted article that he is notable in Wikipedia's sense apart from his candidacy, and (in order to prevent Wikipedia being used as a notice-board for election posters) the rule, explained at WP:POLITICIAN is that being an unelected candidate does not count towards the notability requirement, and candidate articles are redirected as I have done.
If you think you can establish notability independent of his candidacy, which would requires showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject", see also WP:BIO, reply below here and I will explain how you can make a draft in your user space. It seems the nomination was never completed, so this was never transcluded in the daily log and has not been seen by those who scan those logs. I guess those who have commented got there via the film deletion sorting list. I agree it looks like a keep, but I don't think it should be closed without spending some time in the daily log, so I have put it in today, marking it as a relist with a note of what happened. wrt deleted Template:Wp/gom/IPA

Hello, I seek to know why the Template:Wp/gom/IPA template was deleted. I am a new user to Wikipedia and was made party to an edit war upon arrival by another user. The reason mentioned for deletion is One author who has requested deletion or blanked the page. That template was supposed to show the letters of a numerical linguistic minority language that has recently received recognition in India.

You created that template, containing only the three characters "/k/", and then one minute later you blanked it, so that it was empty. A week later, someone noticed that it was empty and tagged it for deletion. Where the only author of a page blanks it, that is taken as a request to delete - see WP:CSD#G7 - because often new users change their minds, don't know how to request deletion, and just blank their page and leave it. I put links on the bottom of your talk page which explain why, if you read them. An encyclopedia is not a place to write about new things and ideas: two of Wikipedia's key policies are:
  • WP:Verifiability: The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth; that is, whether readers can check that material in Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether editors think it is true.
  • WP:No original research: Wikipedia does not publish original research. The term "original research" refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and stories—not already published by reliable sources.
So until serious medical or scientific journals have written about your newly-described disease, Wikipedia will not have an article about it.

On February 16, 2011 the article Michael Gleissner was deleted due to an expired prod for notability. As I had just improved the article on his company Bigfoot Entertainment, I was a bit chagrined to discover a new redlink in the article. So I asked the deleting admin to userfy to a workspace. HERE is how it looked when tagged and deleted. It was clumsily written, had many poor ELS, and no citations... and as it had not received attention as an unsourced BLP, it was properly disposed. HOWEVER... I have been working on the userfied article[1] and think it is now okay for a return to mainspace.

From the comment I saw in the 'red box' when you deleted my article, the error code was G8: Page dependent on a deleted or nonexistent page.

The article is has not been deleted: another user "moved" it - changed its title - to Income inequality in the Philippines to conform to our normal format for article titles, and he left you a note on your talk page to tell you where it was. If you mean the article "Michael Havill", it was moved to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Michael Havill, which is the proper place for a submission to Articles for Creation, and a note was left at User talk:msh111963 yesterday to tell you where it was. You will find it easier to keep track of what is going on if you always log in before editing, so that you will know when you have a message - there will be an orange bar at the top of the screen to tell you so. Sex Drive Energy Drink

I am not sure what the issue is. A "fictitious name" is a legal term in the United States that allows corporations to "Do Business As" (d/b/a) a seperate name instead of in the name of the parent company. Example: Cabobida, Inc owns Sex Drive Energy Drink. This fictitious name allows us to sign papers, checks, etc... as Sex Drive Energy Drink. There is actually an entire DIVISION in our government that handles these official documents and procedures. https://efile.sunbiz.org/ficregintro.html This is done by the Florida Department of State (as we are located in the state of Florida).

You could scan CAT:CSD and remove speedy tags from any that were not speediable, PRODding or AfDing if you thought fit or just counselling the speedy taggers. I'm afraid it would be a fairly thankless task because not many come in that category, but it would help, and educating New Page Patrollers is always useful. I am very disappointed to see that you have deleted this article that I recently created. I believe that the links included gave sound evidence that this was a sufficiently notable individual for an article. Deletion of various football pages (Saint Croix, Saint Thomas, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Nevis official football teams)

Hi John,

I'd just like to give my opinion on what I believe was an unfair deletion of these pages. As far as I am aware, they were deemed not notable and unverifiable.

The tournaments were reported in the local newspapers of the time, some of which are available with a careful search on the internet, but also some where the results have been unfortunately lost to history. I can give links to reports on the Virgin Islands Championship as well. There is no question that they took place. The Leeward Islands Tournament was certainly notable, and has a history spanning over 50 years. It was one of the main international competitive outlets for the islands of the Leewards group until around 10 years ago. To that end, why, for example, are any small island teams notable? They are notable because they represent that island in international competition. Deleting any record of their existence appears a bit unusual. For example, the Leeward Islands tournament has provided the British Virgin Islands national team (FIFA member) with their only ever international honour. To them it is certainly notable.

As far as Tortola and Virgin Gorda are concerned, they each maintained separate leagues within the British Virgin Islands until 2009.

As far as Saint Croix and Saint Thomas are concerned, they still maintain separate leagues, both of which act as qualifiers for the overall US Virgin Islands championship. For the majority of the season, therefore, Saint Croix and Saint Thomas have separate footballing identities.

Nevis was deleted - they do have their own FA, and have participated separately (from St.Kitts) in the Leeward Islands Championship. Certainly, both islands competed separately before St.Kitts/Nevis was accepted into the fold at FIFA in 1986. On their official site, it mentioned with pride a victory over St.Kitts in one of the tournaments in the 1970s (*note - this page now seems to have been deleted). Unfortunately, record-keeping in various Caribbean associations has not been up to scratch, but there are little snippets like this dotted all over the internet that show how important these tournaments were for the players at the time. The fact that the Leeward Islands tournament has its own Wikipedia page (thus must be deemed notable) [3] makes it slightly odd that the teams involved in it are not deemed notable. Without the teams, the tournament would not exist. 4 of the 5 teams deleted have competed in this competition, and only Virgin Gorda has not (though they DID attempt to qualify). Wikipedia uses the term notability in a particular way, which is defined at WP:Notability and WP:Notability (organizations and companies). What is needed is to show "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Saint Croix official football team was about whether these team articles met that requirement, the unanimous view of the four other users who contributed was that they did not, and there was no other way I could have closed that debate. The fact that the Leeward Islands Tournament and Virgin Islands Championship have articles does not mean that they have been agreed to be notable - those articles have no references, and I do not know whether they would be kept if challenged - and certainly does not mean that the teams that play in them are individually notable. They clearly have access to all the hoax material, and they seem to be fine at editing and not really in need of any practice. A few days at most. All the redirects to it are odd. I have tagged it {{Userspace draft}}, which also noindexes it, and will watch for that being taken off. At least the user knows our eyes are on it and there is no chance of it being allowed back in the mainspace. I have re-salted the title (its protection seemed to have lapsed) just to be sure. I'm afraid that is some way short of Wikipedia's requirements - see WP:MUSICBIO for what musical performers need to have achieved before they can have an article. There was another problem - the article was a copyright violation, copied from dirtywaternews.com - please read Wikipedia:Copy-paste for why that is not allowed. The article from Boston Dirty Water News magazine was written by me and e-mailed over to its publisher, who found that an amazing story. I am one of the fan, being following the brother and sister for over two years now. If you visit the magazine website, and go under Entertainment, you will see that at the very top it says: "Written by 'super user'". The band was also on Boston Brazilian Times newspaper, and they will be on another magazine and newspaper in Florida on the 15th of this month. What else do I need to get their Wikipedia page started? Am I gonna loose this opportunity to be the first one to start it?

Sorry, their career has not advanced enough to have an encyclopedia article. We don't do up and coming. Wait till they have records out and there are independent reviews of their records and performances. WP:MUSICBIO will give you an idea of the sort of standard we are looking for - a song in the national charts, or two albums released on a major label. Yes, it's User:Ale_jrb/Scripts/csdhelper.js. You need to check afterwards that it has given the notice to the right tagger, as it can get fooled by complicated situations where tags have been removed and replaced, but it's still useful. You can see at User:JohnCD/vector.js what other scripts I have found useful, though I haven't done a lot of exploring the possibilities. "closeAFD" is brilliant - finds and deletes redirects, updates talk pages, the lot. There's a list of scripts at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts. JohnCD (talk) 17:56, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

This is more of a problem than Delmark since, as the deletion log shows, it was deleted five times in two days by various admins (including me), and then a sixth time which was the last straw so that the title was "salted" to prevent re-creation. The version that I deleted read, in total, "Earwig is a US based indie label based out of chicago. They offer records, tapes, and CDs of contemporary blues music." All those versions were by different users. That sort of pattern arouses suspicions that there is an off-wiki campaign going on, and tends to put up the barricades here and mean that a new submission will be viewed askance.
At a glance, I would say that your version has enough references, but the man you have to convince is user RHaworth (talk), the admin who salted the title. Give him a link to your version - what you have to write is [[User:StefanWirz/Earwig]] with two square brackets each side - and ask him to unprotect the title. I could not close the deletion discussion in any other way. If you want it restored, you will have to go to WP:Deletion review, but I suggest you wait; within a few days I will try to find some advice for you on how to improve it so that it will have a better chance there. Interesting situation

... and one that I do not think has ever come up before. As you know, I expanded and improved the article on Michael Gleissner. In looking at the films linked through his article, I began to source the 2010 film Irreversi to show it meeting WP:NF. Then I decided to tackled the redlink for what I thought was a different film... Hui lu. What I discovered is that the two were the same film storyline, produced at the same time and both directed by Gleissner, filmed at the same locations but with different casts and crews. Check User:MichaelQSchmidt/Hui lu One is not a remake of the other, as they were made simultaneously, the only diference being that the Mandarin was made with a cast and crew to appeal to a Chinese release. Interesting conundrum. The same film, but different... different cast, different crew, different release dates... but same director and production company. Maybe I should expand Irreversi to include more information on Hui lu, and then set a redirect for Hui lu to Ireversi? I had considered doing this the other way 'round because Hui lu was released first... but it is Irreversi that has the greater sourcability for en.Wikipedia. Opinion? Complaint

Dear Sir, I think the way that you scan across Wikipedia in an attempt to tarnish people's efforts of making a page that may only apply to a minority, but is still relevant, is appauling and a true representation of how sad you must be as an individual. The reason I have taken the time out to make a comment is because of the way that you deleted a page for the University of Victoria. Your argument is flawed and as this is an online encyclopedia created for the purpose of allowing people to write articles, with a factual content, for the benefit of others, so what makes you think that you have the right to wipe these pages off of the website with not so much as a second thought? Perhaps if you spent a substantial period of time drawing a beautiul, deep, accurate chalk portrait on the floor, of yourself (as I think it would affect you more) and somebody came along and pissed on it, you'd be less ruthless when it came to taking time out of looking at porn and spending time deleting other people's stuff on Wikipedia. Deletion of Page Bhaskar Mukherjee

I found the page have been deleted number of times by mentioning that criteria of notability or so..... Let me confirm some points. 1st of all the page in Capital letter was made first by the author whereas in title face it was made by some other user who as mistake use nomination as criteria of notability. Before making through constructive suggestion whether you please suggest why different rules is applied for different persons. If you check the thing it will clear that there are so name there whose name can not be categorized as Notable. Better not to discuss such issue, suggest what the biographer should do. Shall he/she simply add the source name where the article published or shall he provide open source full text only where it published or shall he give citation (in terms of who cite). The last data is the best way to judge notability as you suggest but this criteria not fulfill various biographer who name is in wiki. How the author has provide links for an article un accessible. Just now I checked the criteria of notability and found Dr. Mukherjee certainly fulfill the criteria no. 1,2,3,4,6,7,8. After that how you suggest to delete a page. Please look again the profile, check it onceagain on other web sources, confirm your assumption, and the make deletion in so speedy way. The form of citation is not important, and listing every paper that he has written is not necessary. The notability standard of WP:PROF is very high, some full professors may not meet it. This article was carefully considered at WP:Articles for deletion/Bhaskar Mukherjee by people familiar with the field, who were agreed that he does not meet the standard. Because the article has been re-created so many times, the title has been locked against re-creation. My advice is that you should accept the result of the deletion discussion, but if you want to challenge it you will have to convince user BigDom (talk), the administrator who closed the discussion, and if you cannot convince him, go to WP:Deletion review. I have tried uploading an article on Wikipedia and for some reason it has now been deleated? i dont know why this is because i read the terms and conditions before and it said that if you have been broadcast for at least 30 minutes you are allowed on Wikipedia, now we have been broadcast on Radio both Local and National, we have been publicised on local Television and are building a massive fan base in the south west as well as starting to get recognition nationally. is says that if there is enough demand for people to know about us. i believe this a viable reason to have a small wikipedia page about us, i hope you can see my reasoning for this and look forward to your reply.

Your article didn't say any of that, it didn't show significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources, and moreover it was written in such promotional terms: "aim is to get you up on your feet and dancing... powerful vocals and Saxophone... guaranteed to be something you like... " that it might well have been speedy-deleted as an advertisement. Writing about your own band gives you, from our point of view, a WP:Conflict of interest, which is a problem precisely because your interest is in a puff piece and ours is in a neutral point of view and a factual article. I'm confused by the deletion of this article. I hadn't looked at it for several months but found it a useful resource and recall that it was pretty well sourced. A simple Google search turns up lots of reliable sources (including a mention in The Guardian from just a week ago). Since the 1950s, when she began her Oakland-based physical therapy practice, Marion Rosen has become, alongside Moshe Feldenkrais, Milton Trager, Ida Rolf, and Alfred Lowen, one of the major progenitors of a system of bodywork that connects breathing, emotional responses, and the functions of the body.

It is important to include her in Wikipedia as part of the lineage that links Elsa Gindler (see her Wikipedia page), Lucy Heyer (wife of Gustav Heyer, colleague of Carl Jung, teacher of Marion Rosen), Charlotte Selver, Carola Speads to the work of Rolf, Feldenkreis, F. M. Alexander, and Trager. The fact that Rosen is still alive at age ninety-seven, still actively teaching and practicing, should have no bearing on her inclusion.

If you mean, why did I delete DeQuan Thompson it was because it didn't show why he was notable enough to have an article - the band article was deleted for the same reason (see WP:BAND for what a band need to have achieved before they can have an article) and I didn't find any confirmation of what you said about FOW. Thanks. I was just starting a harangue here about it, then found you'd chopped it. While I'm here, a couple of queries on protocol etc. If an admin tags for CSD and no-one seems to be deleting the article, are they allowed to delete it later? And with regard to blocking, which I haven't done yet (was going to but someone beat me to it...), an indefinite block I can understand. It either stays on or is appealed. If a timed block is imposed, does it get lifted by a bot at the appropriate moment, or does the blocking admin have to remember to lift it, or does it have to be requested to be lifted? The system lifts a timed block automatically, you don't have to do any more. For deleting something that has not been tagged by someone else, the only relevant policy I know of is WP:DEL#Speedy deletion: "Administrators can delete such pages on sight," so provided it meets the criterion you're covered. I hadn't thought about this until I became an admin and noticed pages in the CSD list which had been tagged by experienced admins like RHaworth. I realised they must be looking for a second pair of eyes, and thinking about it I decided that was a good idea except in really obvious cases with no shadow of doubt. I couldn't easily define that category, but examples would be attack pages, clear copyvios, or immediate re-creation without improvement of something just deleted. It's probably the sort of issue where an attempt to define it exactly would not be productive - just ask yourself, am I 100% certain about this or would another view be a useful check? In the latter case tag it, but if you then decide you are 100% sure after all, you wouldn't be criticised for zapping it. JohnCD (talk) 13:57, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

The trouble with deleting is that it loses all the contribution history, which we have to maintain if any of the material is merged. See Help:Merging for how to maintain attribution during a merge. We do not block users because of a content dispute. Wikipedia works by collaboration. You must discuss your disagreement with the others and try to reach a WP:Consensus, and if you cannot agree use the WP:Dispute resolution process. Thanks very much. I think that my presence/comments were doing more harm than good as I was already perceived to be some sort of attacker. Not had to use, or even heard of, 3O before but it is a useful tip. I'll see how things go over the next day or so. The only bit I have any doubt about is my commenting out of the image: I know that everything else has been done per policy/guidelines and the article looks better for it, but I've not yet found proof for the copyvio I have suggested might exist. To be honest, if he comes up with proper permission for the other image (which is definitely on a copyrighted website) then I'd be inclined to accept the dubious one as being ok - AGF and all that. I guess you mean Iain Benson? (Tip: when you refer to an article, it's helpful to provide a link). As it's a biography, look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Assessment, where there is a section "Requesting an assessment." Add it to the bottom of that list. RHaworth gave you the answer: you need to show significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. To spell it out more fully, Wikipedia's criterion is called notability, and is not a matter of opinion but must be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones and anything based on press releases. More detail at WP:Notability (people). The test is, have people independent of the subject thought it important and significant enough to write about? Your article's only references were Chadha's own website and his publisher's. What you need to do is provide independent comment - articles about him, or independent reviews of his work. It gave information, some of it derogatory, about a real person. It did not give his name, but it gave a nickname by which he could certainly be identified by people at his college. Wikipedia has a strong policy on WP:Biographies of living persons, which includes "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion". New Pages and New Users

I've recently been doing some thinking (and a great deal of consultation with Philippe and James at the WMF's community department) on how to keep new users around and participating, particularly in light of Sue's March update. One of the things we'd like to test is whether the reception they get when they make their first article is key. In a lot of cases, people don't stay around; their article is deleted and that's that. By the time any contact is made, in other words, it's often too late.

What we're thinking of doing is running a project to gather data on if this occurs, how often it occurs, and so on, and in the mean time try to save as many pages (and new contributors) as possible. Basically, involved users would go through the deletion logs and through Special:NewPages looking for new articles which are at risk of being deleted, but could have something made of them - in other words, non-notable pages that are potentially notable, or spammy pages that could be rewritten in more neutral language. This would be entirely based on the judgment of the user reviewing pages - no finnicky CSD standards. These pages would be incubated instead of deleted, and the creator contacted and shepherded through how to turn the article into something useful. If they respond and it goes well, we have a decent article and maybe a new long-term editor. If they don't respond, the draft can be deleted after a certain period of time.

I know this isn't necessarily your standard fare, but with your admin work I thought it might be up your alley. No, don't blame Tbhotch; he did the constructive work, kindly moving it to the right place, but that automatically left a "redirect" behind, and as he is not an admin he could not delete the redirect. In due course a "bot", an automatic system, marked it for deletion, and all I did was check that the bot was right and do the actual deletion - two clicks. Just housekeeping. Thanks for the note on Yanick Crow, I was unaware of that criteria. I have a question as I am debating one article: Villa Reati. The entire article was copied/pasted from here but the website doesn't display a copyright. It certainly does, see also Wikipedia:Copy-paste: "Copyright does not need to be asserted – if the source says nothing about licensing or copyright, you must treat it as copyrighted." I have G12-ed the article. About professors, they wouldn't all pass the fairly demanding WP:PROF, but A7 is a lower standard and I think full professor at a major university is enough to pass it. There's good advice for speedy taggers at WP:A7M and WP:10CSD (looking at A7M, I don't think I would myself accept "is a teacher at a notable university" as enough to pass A7 - it's a matter of judgement). I did a little web-research before CSD-tagging that article and didn't see anything that would satisfy WP:GNG and it just stated he was a professor. New Paltz Student Project

Hello! Thanks very much for your message and interest on my students' projects. I have been using this project as part of my course content for the past three years now, but I'm continually looking for ways to improve the content of my students' work. I also think that part of the learning experience for them is interacting with other editors and getting feedback on their work, thus extending the learning experience outside of the classroom. So I appreciate when admins and editors take an active role in one of their articles.

I appreciate your suggestions, particularly regarding multiple user accounts, and will be sure in the future that each individual making edits will get a user name. These are group projects, though, and there are times when a single person takes on the "tech" role within a group and is responsible for making all the edits and updates--even when others have written the content. I assume that this is still considered an acceptable practice within the Wikipedia community?

Yes, that's OK, as long as one person is responsible for the account, and it does not appear to us to be shared, we won't know or care how many are involved in preparing the text. There has been some discussion recently about how strictly this policy should be enforced for student groups, but the current policy at WP:NOSHARE is clear. Hi JohnCD, my page femous in the german wikipedia was deleted by you. I've already been involved in the discussion with other wikipedians why not deleting it - as the criterias mentioned by the critics were not true. I did'nt get any feed back… only a deleted page. femous is a new initiave for famous female culture, founded in occasion of the centenary of the international womens day (which was on march 19th - but who is working in culture, knows that any event or festivals cc… has a prep-time of at least 6 month). It is the work of a small NGO in Austria; I explained also that we are a small team and just started to work on our wikipedia - bringing in the missing links later - and that we fulfill the criterias to be in wikipedia. we are of public interest - links from the major Austrian Press proove this: from national Austrian Broadcasting ORF , national cultural radio or the daily quality newspapers like der standard. we already connected most of the Austrians festivals, are participating in the most popular as well as in the most specialised events featuring female culture - we have media partnership with specialized and general media… created a musiciasn pool with more then 60 artists including the best female instrumentalists and singers that Austria has… what do we need more? ps bring our page online again. thank you! No, there's no page quite like that. I can see a list of pages you contributed to which have been deleted, and that looks as if you are doing OK - for instance, on 26 Mar there are 17 against which you have noted (A7) or (G4) or something. Most admins will let you know if they decline a speedy deletion of yours. A good way to keep track is to click "My preferences" and then the "Watchlist" tab, and check the box marked "Add pages I edit to my watchlist". Then if you click "My watchlist" it will show you subsequent edits, including deletions, to those pages. JohnCD (talk) 22:15, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

No misunderstanding, I'm afraid: as a new group who "have spent most of their time writing a body of material", it does not seem that your career has progressed far enough to achieve the notability required for a Wikipedia article, which is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." WP:MUSICBIO explains the sort of standard required for a musical act. Also, even if your group were already notable, you should not be writing about it, for reasons explained at WP:Autobiography and WP:Conflict of interest. The members of James-Honey used to be members of WinterKids and the reason for a James-Honey wiki page would be to update follows of WinterKids so that they are able to see what some of the members of the band are now up to. Deleted Chugai Travel

The article said only that the company is a travel agency specialising in international travel, particularly to North Korea. It did not give any indication why this particular travel agency is important or significant enough to have an article in an encyclopedia. The English Wikipedia requires evidence of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources to show notability, see also WP:Notability (organizations and companies). It is a relevant article because it's the only North Korean international traveling agency relevantly related to the Western viewers. If you explain why the company is unique, that will protect it from speedy deletion, but unless you can find some independent references it is still likely to be deleted at AfD - just having to do with North Korea does not exempt it from the normal notability requirements. I tried to do my best finding sources in Japanese. No luck. But I got really a handful of Korean sources through Naver, Daum, and Yahoo Korea that is worth to put down. SycAmour. Deleated because of a lack of notability.

Dear JohnCD,

Earlier today, I posted a page on Wikipedia. The page was about SycAmour, a band. This band is highly relevant in South-Eastern Michigan, and is expanding its scope of fans. I feel the page should not have been deleted, as I provided all of the references which were available.

On top of the SycAmour page which I created being deleted, my user page, User:TylerReedy, was deleted. I can understand a Wikipedia page's deletion on the grounds of low-credibility; however, a user page is meant to be a practice ground in which the users may perfect their pages, or, if they would like, tell about themselves. I used my page to perfect my other pages. Since my SycAmour page was deleted, I would have went to my user page (in which all of my information was bestowed) and revised the page on SycAmour. However, all of the information on there was deleted, so i can do no such thing. Please replace it.

Your band article wasn't deleted for credibility, but notability, which is a Wikipedia term for the kind of articles we admit. In general, that means showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources; for bands, what we mean by notability is explained at WP:BAND. I'm afraid SycAmour have not (yet) reached that stage of their career.
User pages are meant for the volunteer users who are here to help build an encyclopedia to say a little about themselves, if they wish, to help communication within the project. They are not intended for copies of articles which are not suitable for the encyclopedia. You're right that it's possible to work on an article in a "user sub-page" and if I thought that the Sycamour article could made acceptable by editing I would have moved it there for you, but the problem is not the article, which was well-presented, it's the subject. All it said was that he had a part in the TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, and a bit of plot summary. Short articles that don't show why their subject is important can get speedily deleted. I'm sorry, but Wikipedia is not a site to be used by people's friends or agents to write about them - we call that WP:Conflict of interest; and if she has just made her first short film, it does not seem that her career has (yet) reached the point where she is notable enough to have an article - see WP:ENTERTAINER for the sort of standard required. Murder Kroger

The page was not created as an attack on that entity which is a local supermarket. I am a bit shocked that one person (on the other side of the world, who does not know Atlanta) can misconstrue this as an attack and within a matter of hours the entire page and source code that I researched for hours, is gone. Murder Kroger is, quite seriously, an Atlanta landmark. ("Regular Atlantans rely on a coordinated system of landmarks to get around, like the Murder Kroger...") If you'll look at my contributions you'll see that I've made dozens upon dozens of contributions regarding Atlanta's neighborhoods and history. hile the name "Murder" may not be complementary to the Kroger company, there are other landmarks listed by their unofficial name, e.g. the Big Chicken. I at least want to document the information on Murder Kroger in an article titled with the store's official name. However all of the material is completely gone. Is there any way of getting it back? Sorry to be slow responding - been busy IRL. I'm not really happy about even bringing your text back into your user space - it may not have been intended as an attack, but that is what comes across: "very bad condition... chaotic atmosphere... lack of standards... feelings of a lack of safety while shopping... " The blog-type sources you cited are not good enough to support that sort of thing. I see you tried again with a more neutrally-worded one - I think your best course would be to ask the admin who deleted that to userfy it for you so that you can develop it, by trying to find more sources to establish notability. You might find someone here willing to help. Note that you mustn't include the song lyrics, which will be copyright.

I appreciate the way you took care of this issue. I realized that it would be best to have this information taken off the public domain, so I can prevent similar comments. I checked to make sure it couldn't be found through a search machine. Interestingly, the site http://my-bankruptcy-help.com/?b=Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2011_March_2 has a sort of index to the Adf-site and it shows excerpts of the comment in the short description on the search results. When clicking on the Tasca Family link on the site it directs back to the Wikipedia site with the privacy blanket. I don't quite know what's going on there, but I thought you should know. It seems like the site is abusing Wikipedia content.

In connection with this issue, would it be possible to xxx-out the names in the comment in the archive? Since they are not essential to the debate, and since Biruitorul has apologized and agrees with your measures, I don't think why that should be a problem. It would make Wikipedia an even better place.

I see that site has now caught up, so that it only shows the blanking notice; and if you click on the name you don't get taken to the deletion debate, only to an advertisement about bankruptcy services. It is a curious site, which I have not seen before, but it is not doing anything wrong: the "Creative Commons" license under which Wikipedia is published means that anyone is allowed to copy from it, provided only that they provide a credit to it.
Simply xxxx-ing out those comments would not achieve anything more than we have done with the blanking template, because every revision in the history is kept: we would just be making another version, with the original one further down in the pile. To delete the whole history is possible, but that is something done only rarely in the most serious cases, and I do not think it is necessary here - the comments are now quite thoroughly buried, and if someone should dig down to them and read them they will not think worse of your family, but rather of the person who wrote them.

MystiCon & User Realkyhick

I would like to address some of your concerns raised in your message to me. As one of the organizers of MystiCon, I asked our webmaster to create a WikiPedia page that is very similar in approach and content to the many other science fiction conventions that have listings on WikiPedia. She accomplished that task. It was brought to my attention that a user by the name of Realkyhick (a person who is not a WikiPedia editor, by the way) was advocating for deletion of our WikiPedia page. Since I, and many others, have put forth a great deal of time and effort into MystiCon I felt it was my duty to try and defend our inclusion on the WikiPedia site. Our page is no different from the many others referencing science fiction conventions in the United States and I cannot comprehend Realkyhick's concerns regarding our page. Contrary to what Realkyhick is claiming, I never threatened this person. I did send this person a message that stated I would appreciate it if this user would cease interfering with what I perceived to be, in all fairness, our right to have a WikiPedia presence for our convention. In accordance with how I interpreted WikiPedia's dispute resolution process, I sent Realkyhick a message about my concerns and I also posted a message on the deletion page. Yes, I am very new to WikiPedia. However, I do not claim ownership of the MystiCon WikiPedia page and my only intent was to have a small page for our convention similar to ones that all ready exist. If WikiPedia deletes our MystiCon page, then they must also delete every single page on this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_science_fiction_conventions. Also, Realkyhick has a WikiPedia page: is that not in violation of WikiPedia's self-promotion policies? If I am blocked from WikiPedia than I strongly suggest that Realkyhick be banned as well.

Realkyhick is just as much a "wikipedia editor" as you or I - there is no superior caste of "editors". He is one of the tens of thousands of volunteers who are here to build and maintain an encyclopedia. There are a smaller number of administrators, but they have no special say in content matters, only some extra powers to help maintain the encyclopedia.
The "anyone can edit" nature of Wikipedia, as well as bringing in vast amounts of useful expertise and effort, also attracts vandals, axe-grinders and self-promoters in huge numbers. New articles are created at a rate of about one a minute, a high proportion are unsuitable, and the encyclopedia only survives because users like Realkyhick are willing to spend time and effort on New Page Patrol filtering them. It was entirely reasonable for him to flag your article for deletion if he considered it did not meet Wikipedia's requirements, it was not a personal insult, and if you heard mainly from him thereafter it was because, having been the one who picked this up, he was following it through. Yes, he has a user page at User:Realkyhick, as does every user, but he is not using it to promote himself or his concerns - he is using it, as user pages are intended to be used, to help communication within the project by saying a little about himself and his Wikipedia activities.
You do not have a right to write about your convention in Wikipedia, any more than you have a right to write about it in the Encyclopedia Britannica or the editorial pages of the New York Times. The First Amendment protects your speech from U.S. Government censorship: it does not compel Wikipedia to publish it, any more than it compels the NYT to publish anything you send them. (They will sell you advertising space, but Wikipedia is not in that business).
Out of over three million articles, we know that there are many sub-standard, and for that reason What about article x? is not accepted as an argument: each article is considered on its own merits. Your article is now at Articles for deletion, where the community will decide whether or not it should be kept. After seven days, an uninvolved administrator will decide, based on the arguments presented, not on the number of voices.
I am sorry that you have had a bad experience in your first encounter here, but you started with a completely mistaken idea of what Wikipedia is, approaching it as a notice-board on which you had a "right" to publicise your event, and taking it as an insult when your efforts were rebuffed. It is not a notice-board, it is a project to build an encyclopedia, entirely run by volunteers according to rules and standards that they have agreed, including the notability inclusion criteria. Because it is vulnerable to being used for promotion, it is extremely resistant to any such attempts, and has strong rules against editing with a conflict of interest, see also WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest.

Question about watchlists

I had an article on my watchlist, which was subsequently deleted (thanks in part to my nomination). It was recently recreated; you moved it into the userspace of the recreator. I discovered it had been recrated because it was included on my watchlist. The moved article now appears on my watchlist: does the original also appear there? That is to say, if its a well-meaning editor recreates the article a third time, will I know? If not, what can I do to add a non-existent article to my watchlist? You can watch a non-existent article: click on a red-link to it, or try to create it. When you get to the screen headed "Editing <articlename>", look at the five-pointed star just left of the search box. If it is blue, the title is still watched; if it is white, click on it and it will turn blue, indicating that the title is now watched, so you will know if it is re-created. I wrote and published this book and while I have no quarrel with your having removed the Wikipedia page referring to "The Candlestickmaker," I take strong issue with your editorializing. To announce that the page was removed because the book is self-published without reviews from the usual sources is snotty, mean-spirited and completely unnecessary. By making this unilateral judgment call, you condemn the book without ever having read it. Please remove your specious rationale immediately. It is detrimental to the book and needlessly hurtful to me. I expect this to be corrected and the offending remarks removed within 48 hours.

The edit filter intercepts and prevents certain edits, and when that happens a bot called Mr.Z-bot (talk) makes a report like this to WP:AIV. I looked at that report to see if someone needed blocking, and saw it was a false positive. I've no idea why the edit filter thought it was an attack. JohnCD (talk) 11:30, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Well I was gonna see if a check user could be done on that user, to see if the IP matches up with the IPs BJ uses...is that even possible, being they haven't done any disruptive edits. I find it odd that on the first day of the user edits, they request me to adopt them...sounds like something BJ would do. What exactly does the EF do in regards to me? Checkuser "is not for fishing", they would need evidence. See the section "Do I need to request CheckUser?" at WP:SPI. I haven't had much to do with the edit filter, but it looks to me as though that one is set to block edits which are (a) from an account with less than 30 edits, (b) to certain users' user or talk pages, and (c) contain certain trigger words. CSD Warning templates

A while back you suggested that I include a message to users whose pages I tagged for speedy deletion, which I have been trying to remember to do. I had a question, though. I'm aware of [Category:CSD_warning_templates] and do use them, but is there another source for warning templates I'm not finding? I recently needed to add a message to a user who had a history of speedily deleted pages, and the page I had tagged was not strictly nonsense, but rather a fairly well-constructed, but obvious, hoax. I used the {db-hoax] tag on the article, but couldn't find a corresponding warning. I suppose I could have written something myself, but I was afraid of coming off too accusatory. You do realise that when a db template expands on the article page, it includes an appropriate warning for you to copy to the author's talk page - towards the bottom, where it says "Please consider placing the template: ... on the talk page of the author" ? The one provided with db-hoax is the same as for general vandalism - {{subst:Db-vandalism-notice}} - rather than hoax-specific. There is {{subst:uw-hoax}} which you can add if you think appropriate, or {{subst:uw-joke}} for the sillier ones. For a wide selection, see WP:WARN. JohnCD (talk) 21:28, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, you recently made a pointed comment at User_talk:M.Hugo_Windisch-Graetz. That user is still engaging in what myself and at least one other consider to be unhelpful behaviour on family articles regarding which xe may have a COI. I tried reporting for vandalism and was told that it was not, but the person will not engage in any form of discussion and so to my mind it is certainly disruptive. Can you advise me of any suitable routes that could be taken to resolve this issue - I'm not fussed what the resolution is, as long as the "silliness" is fixed one way or another. If that way permits the user's edits then so be it. Issues includes:

  • repeated recreation of deleted articles
  • repeated insertion of uncited, POV and trivial information
  • failure to discuss
  • possible COI
  • removal of maintenance templates
  • failure to use edit summaries

... and on, and on.

I'm an intern over here at Purehmv Canada, it was my mistake in advertising on other pages, I was attempting to get rid of the "Orphan" status on the page and admittedly am pretty new at this whole Wikipedia thing. Would you be able to restore the Purehmv page, without its advertised links on other pages?

Sajia Alaha Ahrar

Hi, the User:Kabul Afghanistan is using multiple accounts (i.e. User:Virginia Sco1) and IPs (one IP is assigned to University of Mary Washington where Alaha Ahrar suppose to be studying) to add self-praising information in Poetry of Afghanistan and everytime I fix her unencyclopedic edits she reverts me.[7] She attempted to create her own article (Alaha Ahrar) but was deleted 3 times.--Afghan American (talk) 15:53, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't think they're the same person, though they obviously have a common interest: the original chatty article copied from the student newspaper was signed "Virginia Scott" - that's probably Virginia Sco1, who hasn't edited since 7 April. Kabul Afghanistan is likely Ahrar herself: I have reverted the article, again, and pointed her to WP:EDITWAR, WP:COI and WP:AUTO. JohnCD (talk) 16:28, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of Falling In Reverse (From Behind These Walls)

i was just messaging you in regards to my page you deleted which seems unfair, as i stated that i have new information and i need to link some of the band members to well known bands

such as

Derek Jones, who was guitarist for A Smile From The Trenches Scotty Gee, who was drummer for Lovehatehero. and, Ronnie Radke, who was lead vocals from Escape The Fate.

you can search all these bands on wikipedia and they will have full pages on the bands. And i also have more information on the band which would come under section A7, on the grounds you deleted it.

Sorry, just having members who have been in other bands is not enough, until this band achieves enough to meet WP:BAND, and at the moment it's clear from your article that their career is at much too early a stage - it's all speculation: "the band has released no information on the albums names and track listing... it is believed that they will release a single or teaser... It is a speculating question if Falling in Reverse will tour this year". This has been deleted several times before as Falling In Reverse (band), and you can't get around that by changing the title. The first one is actually a better title.
After Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Falling In Reverse (band) a copy was put into the Article Incubator, a place where articles can be worked on which are not ready for the main encyclopedia. That is at Wikipedia:Article Incubator/Falling In Reverse (band), and you can work on that if you like. If you think you have got it good enough - but that will mean showing that they meet WP:BAND by means of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources, and Twitter and Youtube don't count - you can go to WP:Deletion review (sorry for all the bureaucracy, but it's the way we keep Wikipedia from being just another Myspace).
As you are involved with the band, you have a WP:Conflict of interest, and should read WP:BESTCOI. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:57, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of David Green (political candidate and solicitor)

The reason why David Green needs a page is because he was a political candidate standing for parliament for a major UK party, including in an election in which as a traditional third party he was knocked into fourth place by a rival who had once been in the same party.

Also, although I haven't found too much information about either what he's up to at the moment, or his background, I have found that he has written an article in a learned journal. (This was one of the references in the deleted article.) So with those two strings to his bow - academic and political activity - he is notable. I will be quite happy to continue to track down information about this person, but the reason I had put it up in this early form onto Wikipedia is so that anyone else with info about him will be able to add it. If there's no article then no one will be encouraged to add more information.

Please can you undelete.

No, sorry, being an unelected political candidate is explicitly excluded as a reason for notability - see WP:POLITICIAN - in order to prevent Wikipedia being used as an election-poster noticeboard; and having written a published article is not enough either, see WP:PROF and, in general WP:Notability (people).
